Health Department Calls for New Wastewater System By Aaron Rubin Staff Writer

Preliminary results from a study conducted by the Guilford Health Department find elevated levels of nitrogen in septic systems located around the Town Green, which officials say amounts to a “significant public health and environmental concern” the department is determined to tackle.

The results were part of a study entitled “Hydraulic Impact on Conventional Septic Systems,” whose timeframe is the wet season between Feb. 1 and May 31. A document on the Health Department’s webpage says that the purpose of the study was to “evaluate how seasonal variations in precipitation rates and groundwater elevations are affecting Subsurface Disposal Systems on proper-

ties in the vicinity of a portion of the town’s center area.” According to Health Department Director Sonia Brinkwirth, testing indicated elevated nitrogen levels specifically within septic systems along Whitfield Street and are “at the point of property line at a higher nitrogen
