16 Wildlife clinical case interventions were undertaken during the month of September. Rift Valley Mobile Veterinary Unit visited the following areas; Kongoni Game Valley, Kedong ranch, Canopy Hotel – dispersal area of Kedong ranch, Sanctuary farm, Oserengoni wildlife conservancy. Loldia Wildlife conservancy, Hells Gate NP, Lower KALRO, Ruko Community Sanctuary – Baringo, Kamuta farm among other areas.

Case 1 – 9th September 2025

Giraffe Snared Kongoni Game Valley, Naivasha

The heavily pregnant giraffe was darted using 15mg Etorphine plus 80mg Azaperone

On examination the giraffe had snared by a wire and injured the right hind leg. We promptly removed the wire snare from the leg. Fortunately, the snare had caused minor skin lacerations. A fly repellent (Albamycin Aerosol) was applied.

Prognosis is good.

Case 2 – 9th September 2025

The male buffalo was darted using 9mg Etorphine plus 60mg Azaperone.

On examination the buffalo had been snared by a long wire on the neck and one horn. The buffalo had suffered minor skin laceration, which were promptly sprayed with a fly repellent (Albamycin® Aerosol).

Prognosis is good.

Case 3 – 10th September 2025

Zebra Snared

Kedong Ranch

The zebra was darted using 5mg Etorphine plus 80mg Azaperone. On examination the zebra had been snared and severely wounded by a long wire snare which had almost cut off the left front leg at the thoracic area. The wire snare had caused a deep and extensive wound cutting of tissues ligaments and blood vessels connecting the leg & chest. The case had a poor prognosis. The zebra was put to rest to alleviate pain and more suffering.

Case 4 – 10th September 2025

Zebra Snared

The zebra was darted using 5mg Etorphine plus 50mg Azaperone.

On examination the zebra was suffering severe lameness due to injury by a wire snare on the left front leg. The wire snare had self - released. The zebra had a wound which was bleeding & infected. We cleaned the wound using water and rinsed the same using tincture of iodine. A fly repellent (Albamycin® Aerosol) was applied. The zebra was also given 9,000mg Betamox, 300mg Flumeg, 40ml Butasal and 46ml Noromectin.

Prognosis of this case is good.

Kedong Ranch

Case 5 – 12th September 2025

Zebra Snared Kedong Ranch

The zebra was darted with 5mg Etorphine and 60mg Azaperone.

On examination the zebra had been snared and wounded by a winch wire on the left front leg. The wound was deep, exposing the leg bone, bleeding & infected. The wound was cleaned with water and rinsed the with tincture of Iodine then sprayed with a fly repellent (Albamycin® Aerosol) The zebra was also given 9,000mg Betamox, 300mg Flumeg, 40ml Butasal and 6ml Noromectin.

Prognosis of this case is guarded

Case 6 – 14th September 2025

Security Dog

Natural Causes

Aiko had suffered a hematoma of the right outer ear due to continuous shaking caused by inflammation and irritation of the internal ear. Aiko was given 3ml Penstrep injection, 600mg Dihydrostreptomycin (to be continued for 3 days), 4mg Colvasone, 20ml Butasal and 1ml Noromectin. A monitoring period of 5 days was advised before re-examination, however the dog was later transferred to Nairobi for specialist surgery consideration. Prognosis is guarded.

KWS Naivasha Canine Unit

Case 7 – 15th September 2025

Zebra

Human-Wildlife Conflict Sanctuary Farm, Naivasha

The zebra foal was darted with 3mg Etorphine and 30mg Azaperone. On examination the zebra was suffering severe lameness due to an injury by a sharp object cut (possibly a machete) on the Achilles tendon of the left hindleg. The zebra had a wound which was bleeding and infected. The wound was cleaned with water and rinsed with Iodine then sprayed with a fly repellent (Albamycin® Aerosol) Betamox 6,000mg, Flumeg 250mg, Butasal 40ml and Noromectin 5ml were also administered.

Prognosis of this case is good

Case 8 – 14th September 2025

The male giraffe was darted using 14mg Etorphine plus 80mg Azaperone

On examination the giraffe had snared by a copper wire which had injured the left front leg. We promptly removed the wire snare from the leg. Fortunately, the snare had only caused minor skin lacerations. A fly repellent (Albamycin® Aerosol) was applied.

Case 9 – 17th September 2025

Zebra Snared Loldia Wildlife Conservancy

The zebra foal was darted using 5mg Etorphine plus 60mg Azaperone.

On examination the zebra had been snared by a long wire on the neck. Fortunately, the zebra had no injuries and required no further treatment. The anaesthetic was reversed and the zebra released promptly.

Prognosis of this case is good.

Case 10 – 17th September 2025

Rescue

The male foal which was <2 months old, had been abandoned by the mare after falling down a cliff at Gorge area of Hells Gate NP. On examination the zebra foal had been wounded on the head and had suffered minor skin laceration on the legs. The foal was also dehydrated and weak. The wounds were cleaned with water and Iodine then sprayed with a fly repellent (Albamycin Aerosol). The zebra was given a Dextrose infusion via IV and Ringers lactate infusion subcutaneously. Betamox 1,500mg, Flumeg 100mg, Butasal 20ml and Noromectin 1ml were also administered

The foal was translocated to Nairobi Sheldrick Wildlife Trust Orphanage for specialised care.

Case

The Unit stumbled on this case while on patrol

Immobilisation, examination and treatment

The zebra was darted with 5mg Etorphine and 60mg Azaperone. On examination the female zebra had suffered a haemorrhagic growth/sarcoid on left hind leg. The sarcoid was surgically extirpated. We clamped the base of the pendulous growth with clamps and surgically extirpated the growth. We controlled haemorrhage by clamping and ligating bleeders using vicryl® sutures. A fly repellent (Alamycin® Aerosol) was applied. We also administered the following;

• Betamox ® (Amoxicillin Trihydrate 150mg/ml) injection 9,000mg by IM route

• Flumeg (Flunixin Meglumine 5%) 300 mg by IM route

• Noromectin® 1% w/v (Ivermectin) 8mL by SQ route

• Butasal® (Holland) 40mL by IM route

Prognosis

Prognosis of this case is good.

Zebra

Human-Wildlife Conflict

The Unit found this case during a routine patrol.

Immobilisation, examination and treatment

Lower Kalro, Naivasha

The zebra was darted using 5mg Etorphine plus 60mg Azaperone. On examination the female zebra had suffered a sharp object cut which peeled the skin from the rump. We clamped the base of the pendulous skin and surgically cut off the hanging skin. The hemorrhage was controlled by clamping and ligating bleeders The wound was cleaned with water and rinsed with tincture of Iodine. A fly repellant (Alamycin® Aerosol) plus Opticlox® was applied. We also administered the following;

• Betamox ® (Amoxicillin Trihydrate 150mg/ml) injection 9,000mg by IM route

• Flumeg (Flunixin Meglumine 5%) 300 mg by IM route

• Noromectin® 1% w/v (Ivermectin) 8mL by SQ route

• Butasal® 40mL by IM route

Prognosis

Prognosis of this case is favourable to guarded.

Case 13 – 22nd September 2025

Zebra Natural Causes

Lake Naivasha Central Beach Area

The zebra foal was immobilised using 2mg Etorphine and 30mg Azaperone.

On examination the zebra had suffered a complete open fracture of the left hind leg at the tibial region. The case had a poor prognosis. The zebra foal was put to rest to alleviate pain and more suffering.

Case 14 –

22nd September 2025

Eland

The eland was darted with 14mg Etorphine and 60mg Azaperone.

On examination the female eland had been snared and wounded by a wire snare on the left hind leg. The leg was swollen, and the wound was infected. We cleaned the wound using water and rinsed it with tincture of Iodine. A fly repellent (Alamycin® Aerosol) plus Opticlox® was applied then the eland was administered with 12,000mg Betamox, 500mg Flumeg, 40ml Butasal and 10ml Noromectin.

Prognosis is good.

Case 15 – 23rd September 2025

Zebra Human-Wildlife Conflict

Lower Kalro, Naivasha

This case was reported by KWS Kabarnet Station via radio message. The issues were two giraffes which had been translocated from Krugger farm – Uasin gishu County had developed a strange skin disease, manifested by wounds on the skin.

Immobilisation, examination and treatment

A male giraffe was darted using 15mg Etorphine plus 80mg Azaperone.

On immobilization the giraffe had suffered a heavy tick infestation on the armpit area/thoracic area and between the hind legs and perineum. The other areas of the body were observed to be clean. The above areas are also the predilection sites of tick infestation. The resulting wounds due to tick bites, had initiated a sequalae of myasis in these regions. We cleaned the wounds with plenty of water, tincture of Iodine plus a fly repellant (Alamycin® Aerosol). The giraffe was also given 24,000mg Alamycin 300 LA ® (Oxytetracycline 300mg/ml) injection, 750mg Flumeg (Flunixin Meglumine 5%) 750mg, 12ml Noromectin® (Ivermectin), 60ml Butasal and Ectopor SA020 (Cypermethrin).

Prognosis

Prognosis of this case is good.

Case 16 – 25th September 2025

This case was reported by Sanctuary farm security staff

Immobilisation, examination and treatment

The male buffalo was darted with 7mg Etorphine plus 50mg Azaperone.

On examination the buffalo had been snared by a long winch wire on the left hind leg. The buffalo had been wounded by the wire snare. We cleaned the wound with plenty of water, tincture of Iodine then applied a fly repellant (Alamycin® Aerosol)

We also administered the following;

• Alamycin 300 LA ® (Oxytetracycline 300mg/ml) Norbrook Labs UK) injection 12,000mg by IM route

• Flumeg (Flunixin Meglumine 5%) Over® Argentina)300 mg by IM route

Prognosis

Prognosis of this case is good.
