June saw the teams lift over 1700 snares from the greater Tsavo Conservation Area, which is significantly more than previous months. The Ithumba team found over 600 snares during June alone and the Mobile North team found 355. During the month the teams also arrested 66 offenders caught inside the parks and protected areas. These arrests included 7 bushmeat poachers, 56 livestock herders, 1 logger and 1 grass harvester. Over 100 carcasses were confiscated from camps and poachers, 86 of which were collected by the Dakadima team. These carcasses included a majority of dikdiks as well as fish, gazelle, gerenuk, and porcupine. Other illegal activities uncovered during the month included livestock intrusion, in which the teams destroyed 14 illegally constructed bomas inside the park. The teams also destroyed 9 charcoal kilns, 10 hideouts, 9 poachers’ hideouts with poaching paraphernalia and 1 shooting blind. In June, 3 elephant carcasses were found and 6 tusks with a combined weight of 18.5kgs were handed over to KWS for safekeeping. The teams also helped with 2 elephant veterinary treatments and pushed 23 elephants back into the safety of the park, which had strayed into community lands. This month the Kajiado and Mobile South teams took annual leave whilst the Chyulu Mobile, Ithumba, Mtito, Thabangunji and Ziwani teams worked part of the month. The rest of the teams were operating fulltime.
