Professor Hastings joined Eckerd College in 2000 and progressed from Assistant Professor to Associate Professor and Professor of Marine Science and Chemistry by 2012. He served as department chair and participated in multiple academic committees focused on curriculum development, environmental affairs, and assessment. His work supported marine science education and interdisciplinary programs linking chemistry, oceanography, and environmental studies. He also contributed to institutional service and academic program growth over nearly two decades in higher education. Dr. Hastings conducts research in marine geochemistry, chemical oceanography, paleoceanography, and climate science, with additional focus on microplastics in marine environments. His work includes studies of ocean processes and environmental change, including research related to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. He has authored more than 40 peer-reviewed publications, combining fieldwork and laboratory analyses to understand ocean chemistry and climate interactions across modern and historical systems, thereby advancing global scientific understanding. David Hastings, an Eckerd College Professor, has secured more than $1.5 million in research funding through approximately 30 grants supporting scientific and educational initiatives. He has received multiple awards recognizing teaching excellence, scholarship, and climate science communication, including honors from academic and scientific organizations. His professional service includes participation on advisory boards such as the Florida Institute of Oceanography, as well as convening sessions at major scientific meetings. He has delivered more than 50 invited talks and engaged in policy discussions, including meetings with state leadership on climate issues. He also contributes to environmental organizations and mentoring programs, while maintaining an active outdoor lifestyle in Florida.
