Davenant Foundation School - A Brief History
It was in February 1680 that the Reverend Ralph Davenant left all of his household goods and plate to his wife, with instruction that it be sold and the moneys raised be used to build a school for 40 poor boys of Whitechapel.
Ralph Davenant was the son of the Rector of Gillingham in Dorset. He became the Rector of St. Mary’s in Whitechapel and was awarded the degree of MA by Cambridge University under the direct instructions of King Charles II.
In addition to the moneys left in the will, property and land was sold to raise funds to educate 34 poor girls as well as the 40 poor boys. A site was found, and the school built in 1686, on the Whitechapel Road: the buildings still exist today.
In 1813 Davenant earned itself the title of ‘Cradle of the National Schools of England’. At this point, 1000 children were being educated in a new building erected in what is now Davenant Street.
This building existed until the mid-Seventies, when, in a state of poor repair, it was demolished and the land sold to The Salvation Army.
Another strand of the school came into being in 1858 when a Commercial or Grammar School was built in Leman Street under the direction of Revd. Weldon Champneys, Rector of Whitechapel. In 1888 the two charities of Whitechapel and Davenant were brought together and the combined schools were renamed: ‘The Foundation School’.
In 1896 the new Renaissance Building was erected behind the 1818 building providing additional up to date classrooms and a magnificent assembly hall which remains to this day. Evacuations during the Second World War meant that the building was repurposed for some time and unfortunately, badly damaged.
In 1944 the school became Davenant Foundation Grammar School for Boys, a title which it retained until 1980. Then, in 1966, the school moved to new buildings in Loughton.
The new buildings, on a beautiful site in Loughton, were opened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother in 1966. We were lucky enough to receive another royal visit in April 1980 when the Queen Mother returned to mark the restoration of the co-educational nature of the school and ongoing development as a Christian Ecumenical School for 1000 girls and boys.
In May 2022, we opened our new computing building in memory of James Brokenshire MP. James was a Davenant boy through and through and his legacy will live on here.
We are proud of our school and we daily thank God for Ralph Davenant who ‘for the zeal and love he had for his parish’ set into motion the means by which our school was founded.
Our House names represent three areas that had a significant impact on Ralph Davenant’s life. The house names reflect his journey, and the school motto ‘Nurturing Mind (formative years) Body (working Life) and Spirit’ (family and clergy background).
All students at Davenant will be in one of three new houses, Gillingham, Salisbury and Whitechapel. Various competitions, including Sports, Music, Choir, Chess, Science, Maths, Debating and many more, will be organised each year between houses.
Gillingham: 1639.
The birthplace of Ralph Davenant and his siblings, where his father Dr Edward Davenant was the vicar of St. Mary the Virgin.
Salisbury: 1572 -1641.
John Davenant (Great Uncle) was Bishop (1621- 41) and was a big influence on Ralph’s father.
Whitechapel: 1668 -1680.
Ralph Davenant’s last job as Rector of Whitechapel St.Mary/Mary Matfelon. Ralph was buried in the Church Grounds on 16 February 1680.
Most of the research for this history was completed by Reverend R.E.Tilbrook, who taught at the school from 1971 until 2003.

The School Day - timings
The school day at Davenant is structured into 5 different lessons, each an hour long. Lunchtime is for one hour and morning break is 20 minutes. A buzzer sounds at each of the times below. This indicates the beginning and end of each registration, break and lesson. The school day is structured as follows:

The First Day
We are looking forward to welcoming your child on their first day. They should bring with them:
• School bag
• Pencil case with pens, pencils, colouring pencils, eraser, sharpener and ruler
Yondr phone pouches will be issued on the first day - please ensure that you have purchased one via ParentPay. If you purchased a Maths Set and/or an Art & Design Pack set via ParentPay, these will be given to students during the first lesson in this subject. Students who are entitled to Pupil Premium will also receive a maths and art pack at this time. Students should wear school uniform as outlined in our Dress and Appearance section. They do not need to bring a PE kit on their first day. They will be put into forms and given their timetable during the day.
School will start 30 mins later on the first day. Please ensure they arrive at school by 9.00am for a School Assembly. Students will be met by staff on their first day at the school gate and parents should note that they should not come onto the school site to drop students either via foot or car.
School finishes at 3.20pm.

Also includes books for across KS3 - these will be given to students at the start of each school year:
• A4 Art sketchbooks x 3 - Red (Year 7), Blue (Year 8) and Black (Year 9)

Food Tech: Air tight container (approx. 30cm x 20cm) and a food apron (plain black or red).
Students are required to bring ingredients for practical lessons
1. Arrival times: Students can start arriving on the school site from 8am but are only allowed in the Hall and Student Reception area. Students can access the main school area at 8.25am. Breakfast is served in the Hall from 8am and that area is supervised. Until 8.25am other areas of the school are out of bounds unless previous arrangements have been made or for meetings, tutoring etc.
2. Appointments during the school day: The school must be informed in advance, of students’ pre-arranged medical or dental/orthodontic appointments and evidence of the appointment given to the Attendance Officer. We ask that all non-urgent medical appointments be made out of school time. The student must report to Student Reception to sign out and sign in again on their return.
3. Absence from school: Parents will be required to contact the school office via email to attendance@davenant.org or via Talaxy before 9:00am on each day of their child’s absence – they will be expected to provide an explanation for the absence for each day of the absence. Where a student is absent, and their parent has not contacted the school by the close of the morning register to report the absence, administrative staff will contact the parent via a text message as soon as is practicable on each day that the student does not attend school.
4. Leave of Absence: The school will only grant a student a leave of absence in exceptional circumstances. In order to have requests for a leave of absence considered, the school will expect parents to contact the Headteacher in writing at least two weeks prior to the proposed start date of the leave of absence, providing the reason for the proposed absence and the dates during which the absence would be expected to occur.
5. If your child is regularly late to school or lessons this may result in a late detention. Full detailed guidelines are available on our website.
IT at Davenant
1. Students at Davenant Foundation School each have a Google Workspace account. Each student has their own secure login, which gives them access to a wide range of services including cloud storage, online Google classrooms, email and more.
2. The school uses Talaxy as its information portal and all parents will have access to the system. During the first full week of school, you will receive an email with log in details and a parent’s guide will be made available to you. Talaxy will provide you with information about homework, behaviour, parents evening and attendance.
3. Students have access to a secure extranet at https://students.davenant.org where lesson resources are shared. The online Google classrooms will typically contain lesson resources, quizzes or useful links; they are also used for handing work in and tracking progress.
Please rest assured that our new Year 7 students are not expected to do online homework until they have been given training during their first IT lesson.
Mobile phones
1. At Davenant we believe that every student deserves the chance to experience a phone-free education. To that end, we use Yondr phone pouches which provide a simple and secure way of supporting this approach across our school and all students from Year 7 to Year 11 are expected to purchase a Yondr pouch via Parentpay.

Trust Point and Credit System
1. Behaviour approach: We use a Trust Point system that begins with the premise that we trust all our students to be positive members of the Davenant Foundation School community and they can earn various rewards. If students make choices that negatively impact the community, they will have lost a level of trust and will, consequently, be supervised at key times of the day.
2. Positive behaviour: Aside from the Trust Point system we also operate a credit system whereby your child can gain credits for many different reasons during the school year. Credits are directly linked to reward opportunities.
3. You will be able to view loss of trust points and credits gained by logging into your Talaxy account.
School Meals Service
(Provided by Harrison Catering Ltd)
1. Food, drinks and snacks are available from the School Hall at 8am for breakfast, 11am to 11.20am and 12.20pm to 1pm.
2. Harrison Catering operates a cashless system. Credit should be added to student accounts on ParentPay.
3. Students who are entitled to Free School Meals will have their accounts credited automatically with £2.70 per day. This does not cover drinks, only food and this allowance is available during lunchtime only.
ParentPay
1. ParentPay is the online payment system that the school uses to collect money from parents/carers for items such as School Trips, Tuition Fees, Resources and Dinner Money. This is the only method of payment we accept; we do not accept cheques or cash (other than for minor items such as charity collections). ParentPay is convenient and easy to use; payments are immediate, visible and can be made by debit or credit card.
2. You will be sent an introductory email with log in details for your child before your child starts with us.
Medical Information
1. If you have indicated that your child has any medical conditions during the admissions process and if further information is required a Medical Office will contact you to discuss next steps.
2. If a student requires regular medication this can be kept in Student Reception. Parents/Carers must complete a detailed instruction form (found on our website: Parents → Medical room → Medical Forms → New Medication Register) and ensure the medication is provided in original packaging.
3. This does not, however, apply to auto-injectors and/or inhalers as we expect all students to carry two of each if they are prescribed. They must also carry these on any trip, visit or sports fixture.
4. If a student is unwell during lessons he/she must ask permission to report to Student Reception. The student will be assessed by one of the Medical Officers and a call made home for collection if felt necessary.
5. If a student is unwell enough to go home, they must be collected from the school reception by a parent/carer. Students will not be permitted to leave by themselves if unwell.
6. No medication will be given without written parental permission.
School Day Information cont.
Parent parking
1. Parents are not permitted to drive on to the school site to drop off or collect their child. This is for both safety and safeguarding reasons, as it is our duty to protect the children on site.
2. If your child has a specific physical need, you can apply to the school for a pass which will need to be displayed upon arrival. You can do this by contacting reception@davenant.org and they will send you the relevant form to complete.
Debden Lane entrance (only relevant if your child will use these gates)
1. To use the electronic gate system, students will need a programmed key fob. If you wish your child to be issued with a key fob, we require a deposit of £5.00, which will be returned when the fob is handed back. This payment should be made through ParentPay (we cannot accept cash or cheque).
2. The conditions for the key fob scheme are available on our website. By paying your deposit on Parentpay you and your child are consenting to these conditions.
Road Safety/Pick-up and drop-off
1. If you bring your child to school by car, please drop them off at a safe distance from the school and allow them to walk the remainder of the way. Do not drive onto the school site.
2. The Debden Lane (rear) access to the school is for pedestrians only. Please support us by not making the roads outside our school a safety hazard.
Early Closures
1. During the school year we are obliged to do some mandatory staff training. We limit this to a small number of Tuesdays and you will be advised of the dates during the first half term of the school year. On these days the school will close at 2.20pm.
2. The school will also shut early on the days when we have our open evenings (2 per year in October and November) with a slightly later start on the following day. Again, you will be advised of these in the first half term.
Parent/Carer Newsletter
1. At the end of every half term we send a Parent/Carer newsletter full of information from sports activities, to concerts, art and design work etc. Also included in this will be key dates for the next half term.
Music Tuition
1. Over 200 students at Davenant Foundation School have Instrumental, Vocal or Drama Tuition on a weekly basis. Students are tutored by 12 highly skilled musicians and teachers with a great deal of experience in working with young people. Students at Davenant take part in several sell-out concerts and musicals and even have the opportunity to perform abroad.
2. Mrs Tubb, Head of Music, will be in touch with all new parents with further information and it can also be found on the school website.
Lost Property
1. All school uniform and property brought into school MUST be named.
2. Lost Property may be recovered every Wednesday between 12.20pm and 1.10pm. Volunteer parents will be on duty between these times.
3. Pre-loved uniform sales take place during the school year and are an excellent opportunity for parents to obtain inexpensive items of school clothing. Dates of these sales will be communicated before they take place.

1. We expect all students to be wearing the correct uniform, which is easily obtainable. See the full list on page 13 of this booklet.
2. Jewellery: For safety purposes: only 1 stud allowed in each ear, no visible necklaces and no bracelets. False nails, gel nails and false eyelashes are also not permitted.
Fitness suite
1. Membership to the fitness suite is available from September for £20. (Please see google form link on our website - Year 7 joiners). The membership will expire at the end of July, each academic year.
2. Students will need to complete an induction with their PE teacher before they can use the equipment.
3. The Fitness suite will be open on allocated lunchtimes (check the extra curricular- club timetable).
Physical Education
1. Students need to ensure they have full and correct kit for every lesson. Please see kit list on page 14.
2. Even if your child is injured and unable to physically take part in the lesson, they are still expected to bring in their PE kit and change for the lesson.
3. Students will be expected to remove jewellery including earrings during their PE lessons.
The Curriculum
1. Students will study a range of subjects across the curriculum in line with national guidelines. If you need more information please contact subject teachers.
2. In addition, we also have an exciting opportunity for children in Year 7 for them to take part in the Research, Write, Present project (RWP)
The RWP project is based on the 6th form Extended Project Qualification (EPQ). It is an independent study where students can choose their own topic to research. During the year they will learn research skills, extended essay writing skills and presentation skills, which will lay a firm foundation for their studies over the coming years.
Safeguarding
1. Safeguarding concerns can take several different forms including Physical abuse, Verbal abuse, Sexual abuse, Emotional abuse and Neglect. Abuse can be between children, or between an adult and a child, or even between two adults.
2. If you have concerns about a child, however trivial they may appear, we encourage you to speak to us. You can contact the safeguarding team at safeguarding@davenant.org during school hours.
Dress and Appearance
The School expects high standards of dress and appearance and we expect parents/carers to enforce this.
Attention is drawn to this matter in the School Prospectus and the implied acceptance given by parents to the School Rules and Regulations when they are applying for their son or daughter to be admitted to Davenant. There are clear standards that students need to adhere to and they will be sent home by the Senior Leadership Team or Head of Year for inappropriate uniform.

School Shoes
School shoes should be flat and plain black. They should be either leather, faux or patent. Below are some examples of suitable school shoes.
All students will participate in a careers programme throughout their time at Davenant. This starts in Year 7 and builds significantly through Years 8-13.
The aims of our careers provision are to enable students to:
• to understand themselves and to develop their capabilities (self-development)
• to investigate careers and opportunities (career exploration)
• to implement their career plans (career management)
The programme is based on 8 key factors:

Throughout the programme students will have access to careers libraries, careers software, careers lessons, mock interviews, experiences of the working world, assemblies, careers fairs, access to an independent careers adviser and talks from employers and further and higher education providers. Parents will also be invited to attend careers guidance sessions, have an adviser on hand during parents’ evenings and will be helped through key school transitions to support life after Davenant.
This programme is supported by a dedicated careers team situated in the Sixth Form careers library. The career team work closely with the school’s pastoral system to allow all students to make fully informed choices about their future.

The School Library
When your child joins Davenant they will become a member of the Arter Library.
The library houses approximately 16,000 resources. Non-fiction and fiction books may be borrowed for two weeks Students will also be able to access the 30 computers/laptops and the printing facilities that are available. At Davenant the students have access to the online Library. An account can be setup to join the E-platform online Library (Google form permission to be completed).
Students are able to search for resources using the library’s digital catalogue Accessit. They will also be able to use it to find subject reading lists, recommended books and websites, and all of the library’s digital subscriptions. All of our fiction books are catalogued with an age restriction, so that they are appropriate for your child. If you would like your child to access books that are aimed at different age-bracket, please email your preference to library@davenant.org (Google form for permission will be sent to parents).
All resources must be returned promptly and in good condition. Damaged or mislaid resources must be paid for in full or replaced. Notifications of overdue resources are emailed out weekly; students are advised by their Form Tutor after one week, the following week you will be notified of the overdue resource. The library department does not charge for late returns, but please encourage your son/daughter to return the books on time.
In Year 7 and 8, classes will come to the library to learn how to use the resources, develop skills needed for independent research, and take part in the Accelerated Reader Programme.
The Arter Library is open to the whole school from 8.00am; students can also use the library at break, lunch, and after-school until 4.15pm, Monday to Thursday and until 3.45pm on Friday.

Who are we?
The Parents Association is a body of parents who help raise funds for the benefit of the school and our children. All parents and carers of pupils of the school are automatically members of the Parents Association.
What do we do?
We aim to hold events throughout the year to enable parents to meet socially Previous events include Quiz nights, our annual Fireworks, Christmas Fair and school discos.
How do we help and why?
We exist to enhance the quality of materials and resources for our children as they enter their secondary school life. In recent years we have funded a huge range of items for our children from art materials to online resource subscriptions and school garden tools, from sewing machines to keyboards and robots! We also contribute to the Year 11 & 13 Proms each year.

During your child’s time here at Davenant there will be many occasions where they will have the opportunity to take part in extra-curricular activities and events. Many of these opportunities are funded through the Reynolds Fund which is a registered charity that relies on parental contributions, however, unfortunately the fund has been decreasing over the past few years.
We are determined to maintain and improve even further, the excellent provision that we offer at Davenant despite the significant underfunding of schools and we can only do this with help from our community.
As part of your commitment to the Davenant community, we would like to strongly encourage you to contribute to this fund, either with a one-off donation or a regular donation, which will benefit your child as well as many others.

Something to think about….
If every Davenant family were to donate just £5 per month* to the Reynolds Fund, it would have an annual income of c£70,000.
