Tubix - Sistema di etichettatura per tubi vuoti, utilizzati nel settore cosmetico (prodotti per il corpo e la cura dei capelli, creme ecc). La macchina ha un caricatore dove i prodotti da etichettare vengono posizionati, prelevati direttamente dalla confezione originale, ga-

rantendo così un’elevata autonomia di produzione. Il caricatore alimenta un nastro di trasporto che convoglia i prodotti nell’area di etichettatura, costituita da un rotore a 8 stazioni; a ogni stazione, la rotazione di un rullo provvede all’applicazione di un’etichetta avvolgente distribuita dall’etichettatrice che applica dall’alto. Un sistema di controllo verifica l’idoneità dell’etichettatura dei prodotti, scartando quelli non adatti e depositando i prodotti idonei sul nastro di trasporto. Feeder - Gli sfogliatori della serie Whizzy offrono un’ampia gamma di impieghi in linea, per la distribuzione di pieghevoli, promozionali, mini oggetti regalo, collarini sul collo di bottiglie e flaconi, fogli di grandi dimensioni, bustine termosaldate. Precisi, versatili e veloci si adattano con facilità a diverse tipologie di linee: il terminale di distribuzione può essere orizzontale o verticale; per trattare diversi formati sono disponibili la versione Whizzy 210 (fino a 210 mm di larghezza) e la Whizzy 350 (fino a 350 mm di larghezza); la variante con motore a corrente continua raggiunge la velocità di 40 m/minuto, mentre quella con motore brushless tocca i 200 m/minuto. ■

Tubix - Labeling system for empty tubes used in the cosmetics sector (body and haircare products, creams, etc.). The machine features a loader where products picked directly from the original pack are put for labeling, guaranteeing long production runs without reloading. The loader feeds a conveyor belt that takes the products to the labeling area comprising a rotor with 8 stations; at each station, a rotating roller applies a wraparound label that the labeler dispenses from above. A control system checks the products are properly labeled, discarding any unsuitable ones and depositing suitable ones on the conveyor belt. Feeder - The Whizzy automatic feeder offers a broad range of uses in line; it can distribute leaflets, promotional coupons, small gift items, collars for bottles and flacons, large sheets and heat-sealed bags. Accurate, versatile and fast, it adapts to the different kinds of packaging lines: the dispensing module can be horizontal or vertical; different sizes can be handled by the Whizzy 210 version (up to 210 mm width) and Whizzy 350 version (up to 350 mm width); and the direct current motor can attain speeds of up to 40 m/minute, while the ■ brushless motor reaches speeds up to 200 m/min.

3 Sigma Corporation (Troy, OH) - fornitore di etichette autoadesive, supporti e adesivi per l’etichettatura - nel 2008 ha registrato un forte incremento delle vendite e degli utili. «Il 2008 - ha commentato Larry Slaven, presidente di 3 Sigma - è stato un anno decisivo: abbiamo migliorato diversi processi di lavorazione e lanciato nuovi prodotti, accolti favorevolmente dai clienti. Le nostre attività si sono sviluppate non solo tramite i clienti già acquisiti ma anche grazie all’allacciamento di nuovi contatti». L’azienda, che dal 1980 ha dimostrato di avere un forte impulso all’innovazione, è in grado di proporre un’ampia gamma di prodotti speciali con coating autoadesivo. L’offerta spazia dalle tecnologie a base solvente a quelle hot melt e alle emulsioni. Tra i lanci più recenti ricordiamo le nuove etichette solubili in acqua, costituite da una carta ultra satinata e dall’adesivo WD-1: entrambi si dissolvono velocemente in acqua, a temperatura ambiente. Si tratta di un supporto ideale per la marcatura e l’identificazione di vassoi per alimenti, attrezzature sportive o contenitori a rendere.

AlpVision (Vevey, CH) propone Krypsos, una piattaforma di autenticazione in linea, che permette di gestire - senza costi aggiuntivi - le soluzioni a marchio Kryptoglyph e Fingerprint, rispettivamente approntate per la marcatura invisibile di imballaggi ed etichette e per la visualizzazione delle differenze “micro” fra originale e copia. In sostanza, Krypsos fornisce un punto di contatto unico all’insieme dei sistemi messi in campo per rilevare frodi e contraffazioni, permettendo così anche di scoprire eventuali pratiche di “mercato grigio” (termine che designa la distribuzione di prodotti su canali diversi da quelli autorizzati). Conforme alla normativa statunitense FDA 21 CFR (Parte 11), relativa alla gestione dei dati e dei contrassegni elettronici nell’industria alimentare e farmaceutica, Krypsos “gira” su IIS (Internet Information Service) di Microsoft e presenta un’interfaccia grafica adattabile ai sistemi usati da ciascun utilizzatore. La gestione dei dati è protetta da un controllo degli accessi sofisticato e ad alta sicurezza, conforme alle norme di controllo in vigore presso le grandi multinazionali del farma. La sua caratteristica più evidente? Per procedere all’autentificazione dei prodotti, l’utilizzatore di Krypsos non deve im-

piegare alcun tipo di codice: è sufficiente un semplice navigatore Internet, che rende l’operazione gratuita e particolarmente veloce. Inoltre, non richiede una formazione specifica e può dunque essere effettuata da qualsiasi persona autorizzata. Ricordiamo che Kryptoglyph è una tecnologia messa a punto in AlpVision per realizzare marcature invisibili con gli inchiostri e le macchine standard per la stampa offset, rotocalco, flexo, laser, inkjet, ecc. Grazie a questa sua caratteristica, può dunque essere facilmente integrata in qualsiasi linea già esistente per la produzione di confezioni o documenti. Quanto a Fingerprint, difende i prodotti di marca mettendo in gioco immagini digitali “iperfedeli”, in grado di registrare anche le minime differenze legate ai materiali e ai processi di fabbricazione impiegati per realizzare la confezione o il singolo prodotto.

ETICHETTATRICE ROLL-FED - Ocme (PR), specializzata nei settori packaging, riempimento, movimentazione e palettizzazione, ha introdotto Sagitta, un nuovo modello di etichettatrice roll-fed sviluppato da un gruppo di tecnici esperti del settore, per offrire una maggiore integrazione di linea nell’industria dell’imbottigliamento.

Pressure sensitive and water-dissolvable 3 Sigma Corporation (Troy, OH) - a supplier of pressure sensitive labels, supports and labeling adhesives - in 2008 reported increases in sales and profits. «2008 - commented Larry Slaven, president of 3 Sigma - represented a new level of achievement at 3 Sigma. During the year, the company made a number of process improvements and introduced new products which customers found very attractive. We grew in 2008 both by expanding business at existing customers and by developing new customer relationships». Since 1980, 3 Sigma has been a fast-growing, resourceful innovator of specialty pressure sensitive adhesive coated products. 3 Sigma offers expertise in solvent, emulsion, and hot melt technologies. Recently available is a new water-dissolvable label

stock. The product consists of a 40-pound supercalendered paper and WD-1 adhesive, both of which dissolve quickly and wash away in room temperature water. The new 3 Sigma label stock is ideally suited for marking and identifying food trays, sports equipment or returnable containers.

In line authentification AlpVision (Vevey, CH) proposes Krypsos, an in line authentification platform that enables running without extra costs - Kryptoglyph and Fingerprint brand solutions, respectively used for invisible marking of packaging and labels and for displaying “micro” differences between copies and originals. Essentially, Krypsos supplies a unique point of contact between all the available systems for detecting fraud and counterfeiting, thus also enabling the discovery of any “grey market” activities (term that designates the

distribution of products in channels other than those authorized). Compatible with US regulation FDA 21 CFR (Part 11), concerning electronic records and electronic signatures in the food and pharmaceutical industries, Krypsos “runs” on IIS (Internet Information Service) and has a graphic interface that can be adapted to the system used by each user. The electronic records are protected by a sophisticated high security access control that follows the control regulations used by the major pharmaceutical corporations. Its most outstanding feature? In order to initiate product authentification, the Krypsos user doesn’t need to use codes of any kind: all it takes is a simple Internet navigator that makes the operation free and particularly fast. Furthermore, it does not require special training and can therefore be done by any authorized person. Let’s not forget that Kryptoglyph is a

technology developed by AlpVision to execute invisible markings using offset, rotogravure, flexo, laser, inkjet and other standard machines and inks. This feature enables its easy integration into any pre-existing packaging or documents production line. As for Fingerprint, it defends brand name products with the use of “hyper fidelity” digital images capable of registering even minute differences connected to materials and manufacture processes employed to produce the packaging or individual product.

Labeling & Coding Complete lines, focused technologies Altech of Bareggio (MI) participates at Ipack-Ima with the proposal of its entire range of systems for pressure sensitive labeling and product decoration and identification: from the most affordable ALstep to the high performance ALritma, along with other ALcode print & apply units and the more complex ALline and ALpharma systems. An interesting development involves ALbelt, a labeling system which is particularly affordable and yet complete in its advanced configuration, suitable for labeling relatively simple cartons, boxes and jars with top and side as well as wraparound labels. Some technical developments have also been brought to ALsleeve (1), capable of automatically applying heatshrink sleeves, with both anti-tampering seal for food product closures and high rate decoration of the same products. Let’s have a look at the solutions developed for the pharmaceutical industry as well; the ALpharma line of systems will in fact be presented in its entirety, fully compliant with the sector’s strict regulations: - ALpharma A (2) for labeling of phials and small flacons that can be loaded and unloaded with trays, with performances up to 150 phials/min; - ALpharma B for labeling of cartons (3) on one side, or at an angle on the folds of the seal closure flap. Find the code and win Last summer, Sibirsky Bereg, a recognized leader in the Russian snack foods market, launched a lottery in connected to its Kirieshky brand, a dried rye bread snack that is available in nine different flavours: red caviar, smoked salmon, cheese, bacon and cheese, bacon, salami, jellied meat and horseradish, chicken and pizza. To participate to win an Apple iPod, consumers were invited to find a code inside the pack and send it via SMS text message to a specified number or register on the Internet site of Sibirsky Bereg. The lottery enjoyed considerable success, attracting significant numbers of buyers and, most importantly, gaining their loyalty. The unique serial code - called Amcor SerialCoding - was created using technology developed by Amcor Flexibles, which proposes it not only for product promotions but also for protecting the product from counterfeiting, since it can print any individual message made up of letters and/or numbers on each separate wrapper.

Un’interessante evoluzione riguarda ALbelt, sistema di etichettatura particolarmente economico e tuttavia completo nella sua configurazione evolutiva, adatto a etichettare astucci relativamente semplici, scatolette, barattoli, con etichette superiori o laterali, anche avvolgenti. Alcuni sviluppi tecnici sono stati apportati anche all’unità ALsleeve (1), in grado di applicare in automatico manicotti termoretraibili, con funzioni sia di sigillo antivìolo per chiusure di prodotti alimentari, sia di decorazione ad alte cadenze dei prodotti stessi. La fornitura integra una precedente installazione, a testimonianza della validità dei sistemi, che nel caso specifico vengono utilizzati per la codifica di bancali di bottiglie di PET, fasciati (Coca, Fanta, Sprite). ALcodeP utilizza un gruppo di stampa a trasferimento termico della giapponese Sato e un collaudato applicatore ad assi ortogonali, che si muove su robuste guide volventi, ed è in grado di applicare etichette su due (fronte + lato) o tre (fronte + lato + retro) lati del bancale. Tale applicatore

può etichettare in tempo reale anche pallet di dimensioni differenti.

PRINT AND APPLY FOR PALLETS: COCA COLA - Altech recently received a new order for supplying ALcode P systems (print & apply of pressure sensitive labels on pallets) at a facility in Romania that manufactures Coca Cola products. The supply integrates a previous installation, speaking to the validity of the systems, which in this case are used for coding wrapped pallets of PET bottles (Coca Cola, Fanta, Sprite). ALcodeP uses a heat transfer printing unit by the Japanese Sato and a tested orthogonal axes applicator, which moves on robust roller guides and is able to apply labels on two (front + side) or three (front + side + back) sides of the pallet. The applicator can also label pallets of different sizes in real time.

La lotteria ha riscosso grande successo, coinvolgendo un numero importante di acquirenti e, soprattutto, fidelizzandoli. Il numero di codice seriale univoco - denominato Amcor SerialCoding - è realizzato sulla base di una tecnologia messa a punto da Amcor Flexibles, che lo propone non solo per le lotterie ma anche in funzione anticontraffazione, dato che può contenere ogni tipo di messaggio individuale fatto di lettere e/o numeri su ogni singola confezione.

Labeling & Coding Sistemi di laminazione e di controllo Più di 60.000 etichette intelligenti, 120.000 tag o antenne, nonché 300.000 RF-LoopTags® all’ora testimoniano le elevate prestazioni del sistema di laminazione per RFId TTL 100/165 di Bielomatik. Questa macchina multifunzione può essere utilizzata per realizzare prodotti intelligenti (come ad esempio smart Label/tag), in varie versioni. • Altra proposta Bielomatik è rappresentata da Qualifier 100/165, un sistema di ispezione per etichette RFId in grado di controllare al 100% la qualità dei tag per etichette autoadesive e delle smart label. Dopo una verifica ottica ed elettromagnetica, le etichette difettose o i tag vengono rimossi dalla produzione e sostituiti con articoli testati. Sulla linea in continuo possono essere controllate fino a 30.000 smart label all’ora. La successiva codifica del chip viene gestita da un database, con digitazione manuale dei dati o tramite codici a barre prestampati.

P.E. LABELLERS ha rivisitato la propria ampia gamma di etichettatrici alla luce del progetto “3 P”: protezione, praticità e prezzo. Qualche esempio concreto: le nuove protezioni antinfortunistiche per isolare, a norma di sicurezza e con il minor ingombro possibile, il corpo centrale della macchina; il basamento circolare e le protezioni a ghigliottina con comando automatico, sul fronte e sul retro della macchina, per facilitare manutenzione e cambio formato. Le macchine così attrezzate vengono offerte con un supplemento di prezzo minimo, fino a fine 2009.

A concrete example: new accident prevention features to isolate, as safely and with as little bulk as possible, the central body of the machine; circular base and automatic guillotine safeguards, on the front and back of the machine, facilitating maintenance and changeover; this special offer of so equipped machines with marginally priced supplement, until late 2009.

Labeling & Coding Tecnologie combinate per la bellezza Eurolabel Srl (Milano) ha di recente realizzato una nuova gamma di etichette per prodotti di igiene e bellezza a marchio Medicea, dimostrando come la stampa digitale, se opportunamente nobilitata con il ricorso ad altre tecnologie - in questo caso la serigrafia - possa offrire soluzioni di notevole effetto anche nel caso di problematiche piuttosto complesse. La sfida raccolta dallo storico etichettificio milanese era di identificare la soluzione di packaging ideale per una linea di prodotti da bagno, caratterizzata da numerose referenze, tirature limitate e notevoli varianti tra un prodotto e l’altro, senza tuttavia trascurare la necessità di colpire l’immaginario del consumatore con una sensazione di opulenza. Così, i flaconi e i vasi della linea sono stati vestiti con etichette avvolgenti, adottando un’immagine che richiamasse in modo esplicito i più classici mosaici a piastrelline usati sulle pareti dei bagni. Eurolabel ha fatto ricorso quindi alla stampa digitale per rispondere con una soluzione non troppo onerosa per il committente (in relazione al numero elevato di impianti stampa che sarebbe stato necessario realizzare con una normale stampa offset). Inoltre, dato che anche la scelta del materiale da utilizzare era determinante, visto l’impiego nel settore cosmetico, ha optato per un film di polipropilene perlaceo, in grado di offrire risposte adeguate in termini di resistenza e di durata, ma capace al contempo di esaltare i colori della quadricromia. A fare la differenza però è stata la nobilitazione dell’etichetta con la tecnica serigrafica, che ha consentito di stampare a registro una vernice opaca negli intervalli delle tessere, che richiamasse le “fughe” dello stucco alle pareti; sulle piastrelle, poi, è stata utilizzata una speciale vernice glitter, per riprodurre la lucentezza del quarzo. Il tocco finale: una vernice che ha dato il rilievo necessario all’etichetta, contribuendo a creare così una piacevole sensazione tattile.

SEMPLICI E AFFIDABILI - Sisma Sas di Casalecchio di Reno (BO), che opera nel campo dei sistemi di marcatura, codifica, etichettatura e controllo, propone la stampante Inkjet Jet 3, dotata di un’interfaccia Windows che ne semplifica l’impiego. La chiusura ermetica dell’ugello evita che l’inchiostro si secchi nella testa di stampa e il ricorso a una pompa azionata solo al bisogno, limita gli interventi di manutenzione. Porta USB, connessione Ethernet e input/output digitali poi, ne agevolano l’integrazione in linea, mentre l’utilizzo di componenti di alta qualità, il comando automatico e il monitoraggio di tutti i parametri (pressione dell’inchiostro, punto di separazione delle gocce e viscosità) ne garantiscono l’affidabilità.

Combined technologies for beauty Eurolabel Srl (Milan) recently created a new range of labels for Medicea brand hygiene and beauty products, showing how digital printing, when suitably embellished with the help of other technologies - in this case silkscreen printing - can offer remarkably effective solutions even for rather complex problems. The challenge undertaken by the historic Milanese labeler was that of identifying the ideal packaging solution for a line of bath products, characterised by numerous references, limited releases and significant variance between one product and another, without neglecting the need to strike the consumer’s imagination with a sensation of opulence. Thus, the bottles and jars of the line were coated with wraparound labels, adopting an image explicitly reminiscent of the classic tile mosaics used on bath walls. Eurolabel then used digital printing

to respond with a relatively easy solution for the customer (in relation to the high number of printing stations that would be necessary with normal offset printing). Furthermore, since the choice of material was key, considering its use in the cosmetics sector, they opted for a pearlescent polypropylene film which meets the resistance and durability requirements, but also brings out the color of the quadrichromy. However, what really made the difference was the silkscreen printing technique used to embellish the label, which enabled register printing an opaque varnish on the spaces between the tesserae, recalling the receding stucco on the walls; then on the tiles a kind of glitter varnish was used to reproduce the sheen of quartz. The final touch: a varnish which bestowed the label with a relief effect, thus providing a pleasant tactile sensation.

Style, form and… content A symbol of the reinvention of style and form, the new labeling systems made by Labelpack (Cinisello Balsamo, MI) are based on the concept of a new modular stainless steel frame with the characteristic cantilevered structure, successful in the pharmaceutical, cosmetics and food sectors. Antimicrobic all along the line The UK concern M&H, producer of plastic containers in particular for the cosmetics and pharmaceutical sector (represented in Italy by Steba), gives proof of a live and constant interesting in hygiene and health standards, cladding flacons and jars of the “antimicrobic” line with labels these too antimicrobic, hence creating a “perfect” packaging to be used in areas that have to be particularly sterile. The work, fruit of the cooperation with the UK converter Royston Labels, has resulted in the production of transparent and white labels that, thanks to the use of ionized silver (a natural compound effective on over 99.99% of bacteria) are capable of offering a valid barrier to a broad spectrum of bacteria, including MRSA and E.Coli. Il lavoro, frutto della collaborazione con il converter inglese Royston Labels, è sfociato nella produzione di etichette trasparenti e bianche che, grazie all’impiego di argento ionizzato (un composto naturale efficace su oltre il 99,99% dei batteri) sono in grado di offrire una valida barriera a un ampio spettro di batteri, tra cui MRSA ed E.Coli. Bottiglie e vasi sono destinati anche al contatto alimentare e sono disponibili in SAN, PP, PET e HDPE.

Stampa su superfici assorbenti Z640 è il nuovo sistema di stampa ad altissima definizione della Zanasi (Sassuolo, MO), dotato di una consolle stand-alone, capace di pilotare contemporaneamente fino a due teste di stampa per una o più linee di produzione. Contaminated raw materials, installation and handling of the wrong appliances, poor maintenance… in food processing, despite the presence of detection devices, there can be many instances that lead to metal contamination. In fact as well as selecting the best suited

technologies one must be able to handle them with an approach that recognises potential weak points to be able to prevent any serious consequences. The advantages derived go well beyond the “simple” removal of metal contaminants and can be measured in terms of

The first standard procedure - based on common sense though not always practised - suggests the inspection of the raw material on arrival at the site, to locate and remove large

Lo stesso processo produttivo rappresenta una fonte rilevante di possibili contaminazioni causate dal cattivo funzionamento delle macchine, da lame rotte o allentate, da sfridi, fili di setacci, ecc. Una buona organizzazione dei flussi interni e la corretta manuten-

3) RELIABILITY AND SENSITIVITY The sensitivity of a metal detector depends on numerous variables, including the type and size of the product to be inspected and the packaging material used. It should be set up so as to reach its full potential without sacrificing stability and reliability. Here, guidelines that establish the minimum acceptable standards are a great help. La sensibilità di un’apparecchiatura si misura in termini di dimensioni minime delle sfere che questa è in grado di rilevare. Va definita al momento dell’acquisto, tenendo conto che la prestazione effettiva risulta dalla mediazione fra potenzialità massima e reali condizioni applicative (tabella 1). Inoltre, occorre accertare che le impostazioni si mantengano stabili all’avviamento di un processo e nel corso del tempo, per evitare espulsioni erronee.

5) LA CONVALIDA Quando l’apparecchio d’ispezione è installato e pienamente operativo, occorre eseguire una convalida formale del sistema, per garantirne la conformità alle normative vigenti oltre che agli obiettivi di rilevazione richiesti dall’utilizzatore. In concreto, quest’ultima convalida serve a escludere variazioni significative nella sensibilità o nei parametri del metal detector rispetto a test precedenti. La metodologia consigliata è di collaudare l’apparecchio usando tre tipi di possibili contaminanti: metallo ferroso, non ferroso e acciaio inossidabile. Se questo non è possibile occorre almeno verificare la presenza di acciaio inossidabile in prodotti umidi/conduttori e di metalli ferrosi (o non ferrosi a frequenze più elevate) in prodotti secchi. Durante questi test, i campioni di contaminante verranno posizionati laddove è meno probabile che vengano scovati;

6) SUSPECT AND REJECT The rejected products are to be considered “contaminated until proven otherwise”. They should be evaluated within a short time and at any rate before the product leaves

La loro valutazione andrà effettuata in breve tempo e sicuramente prima che il prodotto lasci lo stabilimento. Per verificare l’esistenza di contaminanti, il prodotto scartato va fatto passare nuovamente sotto il rilevatore con orientazioni diverse. Se, dopo questi ulteriori test, la contaminazione non viene rilevata, il prodotto sospetto può essere considerato accettabile; nel caso, invece, che il sistema d’ispezione dovesse scartarlo nuovamente, si consiglia di rimuoverne la confezione e di rifare la prova direttamente sul prodotto “nudo”. Nel caso in cui il sistema lo definisca ancora una volta contaminato ma l’ispezione visiva non riesca a individuarne la causa, il prodotto andrà suddiviso in pezzi più piccoli e riesaminato fino a quando non si trova il metallo che agisce sull’apparecchio di controllo. È essenziale dunque che le aziende

information the effectiveness of a machine can be rated, along with any improvements in terms of saving or productivity increases that result. Naturally, in this case too, one has to reason with logic, considering all the cases of contamination, rejected products and feedback received from customers. In particular, the number of rejects and complaints should be monitored over time, ensuring that the necessary improvements are made and that any recurrent causes are identified and eliminated. ■ Neil Giles

In that for the analysis all that is needed is a small volume of gas and it functions extremely rapidly the model is ideal for systems with high production volumes.
