Dear Dartford Living Reader, Hopefully, you are reading this with the sun still shining, as we enjoy warmer summer weather! August was another busy month for the DL team. I’ve been busy supporting my marketing/social media clients and reviewing TV programmes for the BBC. You can catch me on BBC Radio Kent every Thursday at 4.35pm.

David has also been very busy with his racing driver clients, building and upgrading websites for them, and much more. We have also arranged our next Networking Event for the 23rd September. Again, all advertising space in the September edition of DL sold out before the deadline, so if you are considering advertising, please get in touch ASAP to avoid disappointment! In case you weren’t aware, David and I run Dartford Living alongside over 50 volunteer (thank you!) members of the local community. DL is the only independently run magazine, serving the local area with information and positive local stories!

Local Brothers Racing Towards Le Mans While Giving Back to the Community

For most 13-year-olds, racing at Le Mans would be the achievement of a lifetime. But for Dartford Grammar student Ayrton Lima Evans, the journey to one of the world’s most iconic racing circuits is about much more than motorsport. This October, Ayrton will represent Brazil at the prestigious IAME EuroCup in Le Mans, France. Alongside the excitement of competing against some of the best young karting drivers in Europe, he and his family have launched On the Road to Le Mans—a campaign that aims to inspire others while raising funds for two important charities. Joining him every step of the way is his younger brother, Arthur, who has taken on his own challenge through Run with Purpose. Over the coming months, Arthur will train before completing a special 5K run at the Le Mans circuit during race week, helping to raise awareness and support for The Brain Tumour Charity helping fund vital research and support for families affected by brain tumours and Pre-Loved for Purpose, which supports people experiencing homelessness. For the Evans family, the campaign is deeply personal. Having experienced the impact of brain tumours within their own family, they wanted to use Ayrton’s biggest racing opportunity to help others facing similar challenges while also supporting those in need in their local communities. “I’ve dreamed of racing at Le Mans for a long time,” said Ayrton. “Getting there is already a huge achievement, but knowing that our journey can also help other people makes it even more special. If what we’re doing inspires even one person to chase their dream or support a charity, then we’ve achieved something bigger than racing.” Arthur is equally determined to make a difference. “I know my 5K won’t be easy, but lots of people face much bigger challenges every day,” he said. “If I can help raise money and make people smile while supporting my brother, then every step will be worth it.” The campaign will feature race updates, Arthur’s training journey, fundraising events, raffles, school and community activities, and opportunities for local businesses to become involved through sponsorship. 10

September 2026

The family hopes their story will encourage others to believe that age should never be a barrier to making a positive impact. “We want people to see that you don’t have to be famous or have lots of money to make a difference,” Ayrton added. “If everyone does something small, together it can become something really big.” After the campaign costs have been covered, all remaining profits will be donated to the two charities. The Evans family is inviting the local community to follow their journey, share their story and support the campaign in any way they can. As Ayrton prepares to take on one of the biggest races of his young career, and Arthur laces up his running shoes for his own challenge, the brothers hope to prove that success isn’t only measured by podium finishes—but by the lives you can touch along the way. To follow the brothers’ journey or support the campaign, visit their social media pages by searching Ayrton Lima Evans Racing and follow the On the Road to Le Mans campaign. More Than Words: What Happens When We Really Listen to Children? When we talk about giving children a ‘voice’, it is easy to imagine a child confidently telling us what they think, want or need. But children begin communicating long before they can put their thoughts into sentences. A baby turning their head away; a toddler holding out their hand for help; a three-year-old insisting a cardboard box is definitely a rocket. These are all examples of child voice. Noticing and responding can influence how children see themselves and their place in the world. At the heart of our Let’s Nurture Futures™ approach is the belief that children are capable, curious individuals whose ideas and feelings matter. Listening doesn’t mean allowing children to make every decision. It means showing them that their contribution matters. Thinking Together One valuable way this happens is through something Early Years educators call sustained shared thinking. You may already do it every day. For example, imagine your child discovers a worm in the garden. Instead of telling them what it is doing, you might ask, “Where do you think it’s going?” Perhaps they think it is looking for its family. You wonder where they might live. Together, you investigate. Nobody is searching for the ‘correct’ answer. Adult and child are thinking together, both contributing to where the conversation goes. These interactions encourage curiosity, problem-solving and confidence in sharing ideas. Sometimes the most powerful thing an adult can do is become curious alongside the child. Listening Means Looking, Too Child voice extends beyond spoken language. Young children communicate through facial expressions, gestures, movement, behaviour and simply moving towards or away from something. When adults notice these signals, children learn something important: my communication has meaning. This is where child voice connects naturally with consent. The foundations of consent are built through everyday interactions: “Would you like a cuddle?”, “Can I help you wipe your nose?” or “Would you like me to help, or would you like to try?” Where there is genuinely a choice, we can give children one and, importantly, respect their answer. Children learn that

they can communicate boundaries, and that other people have them too. Adults remain responsible for children’s safety. A toddler cannot opt out of holding hands beside a busy road simply because they say “no”. But when something has to happen, we can explain why, acknowledge their feelings and involve them. The Message Beneath It All Child voice, sustained shared thinking and consent share the same foundation: respect. When we pause to hear children’s ideas, wonder alongside them and notice what their words and bodies communicate, we send a powerful message: you are worth listening to. Children who experience that respect aren’t being taught that the world will always do what they want. They’re learning that they can have ideas, express preferences, ask questions and have boundaries, while learning to respect those of others. Perhaps important learning begins not with adults having all the answers, but with adults being willing to listen. I’ve called these bites but the reality is once you try one, it won’t be easy to stop eating these wonderful little treats. Keep in the fridge for maximum deliciousness!

Recipe

What you

will need

For the b ase: 150g Uns alted Butt er 250g Dig estive Bis cuits For the C aramel: 200g Wh ite Sugar 60ml Wa ter 160ml Do uble Crea m 50g Unsa Tempera lted Butter (Room ture or a lit tle melted 2-3 Bana ) nas 300ml D ouble Cre am

What to do: Grease a 12”x9” brownie tray with a little butter and line with greaseproof paper. Place the Digestive Biscuits into a large food/sandwich bag and break them into a crumb mix using a rolling pin or another hard object. In a large bowl carefully melt the Butter for the base in the microwave. Pour the Biscuits into the Butter and mix until combined. Tip into the prepared tin and place in the fridge until ready to fill. For the Caramel: In a large saucepan, stir together the Sugar and Water and begin to heat gently on a medium heat (stirring continuously). Once the Sugar has dissolved fully and the mixture starts to bubble stop stirring and turn the heat up. Boil the mix slowly without touching/stirring for about 5-10 minutes until the mix is a beautiful amber colour. Do not leave the mix as this may happen quickly! Once you have the amber colour, take the pan off the heat and add the Double Cream – whisking together, followed by the Butter – again whisk everything together. Pour the Caramel onto your Biscuit Base. Slice your bananas and place a layer onto the Caramel. Pop into the fridge. In a large bowl, whisk the Double Cream until soft peaks then spread evenly over the bananas. Chill for a couple of hours, then cut into small bite sized squares. Enjoy xx 22

Does your conveyancer really need to be local? By Ayla Clissold, Senior Associate, Residential Property, CooperBurnett LLP One question I am asked surprisingly often is: “Do I need to use a conveyancer who is local to the property?” The short answer is: No Many people assume that a local conveyancer will automatically provide a better service. Years ago, that may have been true, but modern conveyancing works very differently. I live in North Kent, my office is in Tunbridge Wells, and I regularly deal with property transactions across England and Wales. Today, most conveyancing is carried out electronically. Searches are ordered online, documents are shared by email, funds are transferred electronically and applications are submitted digitally to HM Land Registry. As a result, physical distance rarely affects the progress of a transaction. What actually matters? • Communication Do they answer the phone and reply to your emails? Do you know what is happening with your transaction? Buying a house can be stressful enough, without having to chase your own solicitor. • Experience Do they know how to handle the file when something unusual comes up, or are they simply ‘ticking boxes’? A ‘straightforward’ freehold house purchase can suddenly become considerably less so when a title issue; restrictive covenant; or planning problem crops up. • Attention to detail A property transaction can turn on one small detail in a title, lease or search result. You need someone who actually reviews the documents, rather than simply processing them. • Problem solving Things don’t always go smoothly. A great conveyancer should be able to identify a problem, explain it to you in plain English and, importantly, find a resolution. • The human side of conveyancing For me, conveyancing is about people, not paperwork. I believe a great conveyancer needs patience, empathy and the ability to listen properly, so clients feel supported and reassured throughout. Be careful who recommends your conveyancer You may be offered a conveyancer through your estate 26

September 2026

agent or mortgage broker and they may genuinely be excellent. However, it is perfectly reasonable to ask: “Are you receiving a referral fee for recommending this firm?” Referral arrangements are common in the property industry, and consumers should understand when a recommendation may have a financial incentive attached to it. At CooperBurnett, we do not pay or receive referral fees. That means if we are acting for you we are truly independent. I think that transparency matters, and you should feel confident that the person you choose is the right person for the job. But what about local knowledge? There are certainly circumstances where local knowledge can be useful but, your conveyancer doesn’t need to physically live around the corner to have that knowledge. What matters is whether they know how to find the information they need and, more importantly, how to interpret it. And there’s another thing worth remembering: your conveyancer isn’t just dealing with the property. They’re dealing with you; your mortgage lender; the estate agent; the other side’s solicitor; the Land Registry; and potentially managing agents, developers and local authorities. Being great at coordinating all of those people is far more valuable than having a local office. So, should you choose a local conveyancer? If you want to use someone because they’re local and you connect with them — absolutely. But don’t assume that local means better. I would much rather have a conveyancer who is responsive, experienced and proactive whose office is 50 miles away rather than someone who works five minutes away but is impossible to get hold of. Great conveyancing isn’t about being local—it’s about being available when your client needs you. CooperBurnett’s main office is in Tunbridge Wells, however Ayla Clissold can arrange a meeting with you in Dartford or the surrounding area. If you wish to discuss this or any other family law issues, please do not hesitate to contact Ayla Clissold by email: akc@cooperburnett.com or tel: 01892 515022. Save the planet Getting to know our friends!

DL Nature

by Kate Southworth

Every living thing depends on other living creatures, plants, trees, water and the land around them for survival. Insects are a factor we may overlook so easily, but they are essential to our survival, and greatly under threat due to increasing development, pesticide use and habitat loss. The health of our ecosystem depends on understanding who our friends are on this planet. Too many creatures essential to our healthy existence are needlessly destroyed, because we don’t understand them, or their role in the life of this planet. Let’s meet one of these, regarded with horror by some as they view their rear pincers, raised as a defence if we come across them. We to them must look similarly threatening, indeed we are considerably more dangerous! Meet the earwig! A nocturnal creature which hides in damp spots. The most common one in the UK is about 14mm long , with lengthy pincers on their rear ends. Earwigs are totally harmless, to us, our children and our pets. They do not sting or jump, rarely fly, are not poisonous, do not carry diseases or suck blood. Yes, they may enjoy a nibble of some plants, BUT they are top ranking natural pest control agents, emerging at night to voraciously eat our many aphids, up to 50 per night, (that’s your green/white/blackflies reduced!) They also eat slug and snail eggs, and by eating dead vegetation speed up recycling of nutrients in our soil. The pincers, yes, they will wave them threateningly at you if you scare them, but they much prefer to scuttle away and hide. Their pincers are very weak, and at worst, a small nip given to protect themselves will rarely even break the skin. Do you have apple or pear trees? Then earwigs are your best friends. They gobble up woolly aphids, pear suckers, codling moths, scale insects, and are seen as highly effective natural predators. Don’t spray, earwigs are very susceptible and will die, and do not regenerate quickly, just leave them to do the work for you! Encourage more earwigs onto your trees by hanging plant pots filled with straw from branches. A mother earwig is possibly the most devoted parent in the insect world. She will prepare an underground space to lay her eggs, which she then guards 24/7 for months. She regularly turns the eggs to ensure temperature stability, and repeatedly licks the eggs clean, which also transfers anti fungal and antibiotic substances onto the eggs. Should a threat to the nest occur, she will carefully carry each egg in her mouth to a safer new site. When the eggs hatch into nymphs, (a smaller, paler version of their mother), the mother will for a time gather and regurgitate food to help feed the nymphs. The old wives’ tale about them crawling into ears is generally untrue, occasional ones may have mistaken a camper’s ear for a safe space but so have many other insects. Harmless, caring little benefactors for our struggling ecosystem….

DL Nature

Dartford Living in the Garden Pick, plant and prepare - with it’s shortening days September is a busy month for gardeners as it marks the transition into autumn. September is the last month of summer and gardeners should expect hot sunny weather to ripen fruits, but there are often good amounts of rain that will rejuvenate lawns. Looking to the future bulbs need planting and preparations need to be made for Autumn. Lawns August can take its toll on lawns, and many gardeners reduce cutting frequency and blade height to help grass survive. But September will offer a welcome reprieve and after a couple of downpours lawns should look lush. Apply low nitrogen, high potassium fertiliser to help it get through winter, consider aerating and scarifying, before scattering seed on any bare patches. Keep grass around 3 to 5cm high to allow it to absorb the maximum amount of sunshine. Harvest September is the month when there is something of a harvest crossover as late summer fruit and veg meet the early autumn crops. Potatoes should be still good to pick, as should runner beans, beetroot and sweetcorn, whilst there should still be some succulent plums and the last of the summer raspberries to pick. The early apples and pears, and blackberries are ripening in the warm sunshine, and some should be good enough to pick. Plant In the vegetable plot consider sowing winter hardy broad beans and peas for early spring harvest. Remember, for the last of your summer legumes you should not pull up the whole plant when it has finished producing, instead leave the roots in the ground as this improves soil structure and helps fix nitrogen into the soil. You can also continue sowing autumn planting onion and garlic sets and winter salad greens like mustard leaf and spinach for plentiful salad crops. In the flower garden now is the time to plant spring bulbs like hyacinths, crocuses and daffodils to establish before winter but always make a note of what is planted where! Hardy annuals like nigella, English marigolds and cornflowers can be sown directly into the soil for early spring blooming. Prepare If you have one, netting the pond is a good thing to do this month as it will stop too many autumn leaves falling in and decomposing. In the greenhouse you can still take cuttings of fuchsias and geraniums to propagate for next year but do not forget to prepare your greenhouse for the colder weather. It should be cleaned and tidied and the glass washed and dried then line the inside walls and roof with horticultural bubble wrap. Water butts also need a good clean out this month and given a thorough flushing, cold frames need cleaning, tidying and washing like greenhouse and then lining with bubble wrap. September is the perfect month to deep clean your patio and any flagged paths, or any decking removing any moss and algae which could make them slippery and allowing everywhere to dry in the sunshine.

The Winter Vaccination Campaign

DL Health

The winter vaccination campaign plays an important role in protecting individuals and communities from serious illness during the colder months. Winter can place additional pressure on health and social care services, as respiratory infections such as influenza (flu), COVID-19 and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) can circulate more widely. Vaccination helps reduce the risk of severe disease. The programme is designed to protect people who are most likely to become seriously unwell. Groups commonly prioritised for vaccination include older adults, people with certain long-term health conditions, pregnant women and eligible care-home residents. Some frontline health and care workers may also be offered vaccination. Eligibility varies by vaccine and can change between seasons, so check the latest guidance from the NHS. Protecting you against flu The flu vaccine is a key part of the winter campaign. Flu can cause significant complications, particularly among older people and those with underlying health conditions. Vaccination reduces the likelihood of serious illness and helps protect vulnerable people who may be exposed to the virus. Because influenza viruses change over time, the vaccine is reviewed and updated each year to provide protection against strains expected to circulate during the coming season. From 1 October, the following are eligible for a free NHS flu vaccine – aged 65 or older, younger adults with some long term conditions, care home residents, carers, living with people who have a weakened immune system. From 1 September, pregnant women and children will be able to access the flu vaccination. Is COVID vaccine still needed? Although people think COVID has gone away, it can still cause serious illness, hospital admission and death in people at increased risk. The protection provided by previous vaccination or infection can decrease over time, which is one reason seasonal doses may be recommended for certain groups. Vaccination can reduce the risk of serious illness and hospitalisation. The COVID vaccine will be available from 1 October to those aged over 75, adults living in a care home for older adults or those with a weakened immune system. What is RSV? RSV is a common respiratory virus, which cause significant respiratory illness, particularly in infants and older adults. For many years, we have vaccinated premature babies in their first few years of life. The UK has now introduced vaccination programmes aimed at protecting vulnerable groups. This currently includes pregnant women (to pass on immunity to their baby), those aged over 75 or who live in a care home for older adults. Pneumococcal vaccines Some people will also be offered a pneumococcal vaccination, which protects against a bacteria that can cause pneumonia, meningitis and blood infections. This is given as a one off vaccination at 65 years or older. Younger people at risk may also be offered this. There is a separate vaccination programme for babies. Isn’t this all a bit much? Flu and COVID vaccines are only offered at certain times of the year, but you can get the RSV and pneumococcal vaccine all year round. Some people are concerned about having too many vaccines all at once. It is safe to have them together, but it is also OK to spread them out if you feel more comfortable with this. If you are invited to have one or more of these vaccinations, please book an appointment. If you have any questions, please ask your GP practice or community pharmacist. They can help people understand why they have been offered a vaccine, what benefits it provides and what common side effects they might experience. They can listen to your concerns and provide balanced, evidence-based information.

DL Home

Dartford Living In The Home You don’t always need a major renovation to make your home feel fresher and more inviting. Sometimes the biggest difference comes from tackling a few simple jobs that can be completed in an afternoon. Still need convincing? Well, put it to the test: if your property is feeling a little tired, here are six tasks that we’re confident will provide an instant lift. 1. Window to the world The first and perhaps most effective job is cleaning your windows. Over time, dirt, dust and weather stains build up on glass, reducing the amount of natural light entering your home. Sparkling windows can make rooms feel noticeably brighter and more spacious, particularly in these glorious summer months. 2. Touch it up Refreshing paintwork is another quick win. You don’t need to redecorate an entire room. Touching up scuffed walls, repainting skirting boards or refreshing tired doors can make a surprising difference, in daylight and artificial lighting alike. 3. Don’t mutter, just declutter Decluttering is often overlooked but can transform how a space feels. Clearing surfaces, organising cupboards and removing items you no longer need can instantly create a calmer, more attractive environment. Not only that, you’ll find your mental health takes an upward slant, and you may just be able to tick off a few of those admin jobs at the same time. 4. Let there be light Lighting also deserves attention. Replacing old bulbs with brighter, energy-efficient alternatives can improve a room immediately, as well as helping the environment. Cleaning lampshades and light fittings can further enhance the effect. 5. Under pressure Outside, pressure-washing patios, paths and driveways will improve kerb appeal. Years of dirt and algae can disappear in a matter of hours, revealing surfaces that look almost new. Of all the tasks, this is one you’ll probably want to do yourself, as the satisfaction levels are high! 6. Plant a seed in your mind… and your garden Finally, don’t underestimate the power of plants. Houseplants, hanging baskets and colourful containers can bring life and character to both indoor and outdoor spaces. Even a few carefully chosen plants can make a room feel more welcoming. Ultimately, the beauty of these projects is that they require relatively little time or expense. Individually they may seem small, but together they can transform the look and feel of a home, proving that sometimes the simplest improvements have the greatest impact. 38

Senior Snippets: Tips for Reducing Stress By Christina Uppenkamp Home Instead Welcome to the latest edition of Senior Snippets: the monthly advisory column with the older members of our community in mind, brought to you by Christina Uppenkamp, Director of Home Instead Dartford. Ageing brings about new challenges such as health and finances and dealing with change that can cause stress to build in older adults. News, personal circumstances, and changes in daily life can all contribute to feelings of stress and anxiety – no matter what age. Stress is a normal part of everyday life and there’s no escaping it, but there are some ways to deal with it that are healthier and more beneficial than others. Participate in social and community activities. Social interaction and a sense of giving to your community enhance self-esteem and reduce stress. Regular contact with family, friends, and community groups can have significant benefits for emotional wellbeing. Joining a lunch club or community group is a great way to stay connected. It also helps to prevent loneliness and isolation. Take care of yourself. Take care of your physical health through regular movement, nutritious food, adequate sleep, and routine health checks. Stay focused on positive things. Avoid negative self-talk such as “I can’t do that” or “I’m too old.” When your self-talk is negative, you will feel more stress. Instead of thinking what you can’t do, remember what you can do. Limit How Much News You Consume Staying informed is important, but constantly watching the news or scrolling through social media can increase feelings of stress and anxiety. Consider checking the news once or twice a day from trusted sources and then focusing on activities that bring you enjoyment and peace of mind. Stay Connected Through Technology Technology can be a wonderful way to stay in touch with loved ones. Video calls, messaging apps, and online community groups can help you maintain meaningful connections, especially if mobility or distance makes face-

to-face visits more difficult. Spend Time Outdoors Getting outside, even for a short walk or to sit in a garden or local park, can have a positive impact on mood and wellbeing. Fresh air, natural light, and contact with nature can all help reduce stress and boost emotional wellbeing. Participate in activities you enjoy Have you always wanted to learn a new language? Take up ballroom dancing? Mentor a child? Volunteer for a local charity? Now is the time! (And activities like these will also help your brain.) Read Reading is a tried-and-true way for seniors to relieve the stress in their lives. It is a technique used to escape from the stress of life without ever leaving home. Studies show that reading reduces the heart rate and releases tension in the muscles. Reading at least 30 minutes a day, or even listening to audio books, can have a significant impact on the reduction of stress. Make a list of the important things you need to handle each day. Try to follow the list so you feel organized and on top of things. You will get a feeling of accomplishment as you make your way through the list. It is important to remember that while we cannot always control the events happening around us, we can take positive steps to protect our wellbeing. Small changes such as staying connected, keeping active, getting enough rest, and seeking support when needed can make a real difference. If stress or worry is affecting your daily life, help is available and you do not have to face it alone. If you would like to speak to someone at Home Instead, please do not hesitate to get in touch. We also welcome any suggestions for future topics from you all. All you have to do is write to me at c.uppenkamp@dartford.homeinstead. co.uk or by post to Home Instead Dartford, St Fidelis House, St Fidelis Road, Erith, DA8 1AT.

Silversea: Luxury at Sea, Experienced First-Hand

Travel

By Harden Holidays

There are some travel experiences that are difficult to truly appreciate until you experience them for yourself — and my recent time aboard Silversea’s magnificent Silver Nova was certainly one of them. I was fortunate enough to join Silver Nova for a beautiful Mediterranean sailing from Monte Carlo to Rome, taking in the glamour of the French and Italian Rivieras along the way. As a travel agent, I have always known Silversea’s reputation for exceptional luxury, but experiencing it first-hand gave me an entirely new appreciation for what makes this cruise line so special. From the moment I stepped onboard, there was an immediate sense of understated elegance. Silver Nova is contemporary and incredibly stylish, but never feels showy. Instead, the focus is on space, comfort and impeccable attention to detail. The suites are beautifully designed, all with ocean views and the vast majority featuring private verandas. Every suite also comes with personalised butler service — something that may sound extravagant until you experience just how naturally it becomes part of your holiday! Dining was another real highlight. Silversea offers an impressive choice of restaurants and cuisines, from relaxed al fresco dining to wonderful fine-dining experiences. The quality throughout was exceptional, and I particularly loved the flexibility of being able to choose somewhere completely different each evening. Then, of course, there are the destinations. Sailing into places such as Portofino and exploring Florence and the Tuscan countryside reminded me why small-ship cruising can be so special. Silver Nova carries just over 700 guests, allowing her to offer a much more intimate experience and visit ports that larger ships simply cannot. But Silversea goes far beyond traditional cruising. For those with a real sense of adventure, Silversea Expeditions takes this same level of luxury to some of the most extraordinary and remote corners of our planet. Think Antarctica, the Galápagos, the Arctic and other incredible wilderness destinations, explored with expert expedition teams and immersive experiences ashore. It is adventure without having to sacrifice comfort — returning from a day of exploration to beautiful surroundings, exceptional dining and Silversea service. For anyone with a true bucket list, their expedition programme is absolutely fascinating. What impressed me most onboard Silver Nova, however, was the service. It is polished and intuitive without ever becoming overly formal. The crew quickly learn your preferences and somehow seem to know what you might need before you have even thought to ask. Combined with Silversea’s wonderfully inclusive approach, it creates a holiday where you can genuinely switch off and simply enjoy being looked after. And now I’m delighted to be bringing a little taste of Silversea to Harden Holidays. Join us on 27th September 2026 As part of our series of exclusive in-store events, we will be welcoming Silversea to Harden Holidays on Sunday 27th September. This will be a fantastic opportunity to discover the complete world of Silversea — from ultra-luxury ocean voyages through the Mediterranean, Caribbean and beyond, to once-in-a-lifetime expedition journeys to some of the world’s most remote destinations. Whether you are already considering Silversea, intrigued by the idea of an expedition cruise, or simply want some inspiration for your next adventure, we would love you to join us. Call 0800 023 8974 or visit www.hardenholidays.co.uk/events to secure your place.

DL Book Corner

Under The Glow of a Harvest Moon Written by Colin Fantham (author of The Road to Fear & Other Tales of Intrigue)

It was late in the evening, and the moon was as bright as a silver button. Barely visible to the naked eye, a shooting star silently sped its way across the clear night sky. The countless stars beamed their enigmatic presence from the unending depths of space, just as they had done for billions of years. It was a still cool night, like so many before, but there was something in the air this particular night, at this particular time, that defied rational explanation. An aura of the unexpected lingered in the atmosphere, like the last words from a dying man. It was as if time had momentarily regressed to revisit a memorable incident long held within its grasp, in this exact same setting, from its illustrious past. Within this setting, and running desperately through the unrelenting rural landscape of the Yorkshire moors, were the two escaped convicts: Eddie Dinglewood and Wilfred Harris. Both had been incarcerated in Bramgate Prison, for theft of property, and now they had taken their chance and were fleeing for their lives. Still dressed in their grubby sack cloth prison uniforms adorned with dark arrow shapes, they had been running for hours, frantically, for the freedom that they had once known. They both knew the outcome if they were caught – it would be severe. The much younger of the two, Eddie, supported Wilfred, whose left leg had been badly grazed by a bullet from a warder’s rifle – the older man was struggling to maintain the hurried pace. In the far distance they could hear the faint but unmistakeable sound of baited dogs hungrily seeking their prey with malicious intent. The two men, now exhausted, stopped by an old oak tree, and rested for a while, each leaning against its trunk, trying to catch their breath. Wilfred spoke first: ‘Maybe you should go on without me, Eddie? I’m holding you up.’ He was bleeding badly from his wound. ‘I’m not leaving you. We’ve come too far to give up now, Wilf,’ said Eddie. ‘We’re in this together. If we could just get to a river and cross it... It would take them off the scent.’ ‘And then what?’ ‘Get far away from here. Start afresh.’ ‘I’m not sure I’m able to go much further,’ declared Wilfred, desperately. He was beginning to feel faint. ‘We can’t go back now. Imagine the reception we’d get? They’d make our lives a living hell. We’d be walking on that treadmill til kingdom comes. Or worse… It’s not right… It’s not fair. They treat us like we are vermin.’ ‘We’re thieves in the night, Eddie. To them we are vermin.’ ‘We stole to feed our families,’ reasoned Eddie. ‘It’s no crime to be poor.’ ‘Tell that to the judge,’ countered Wilfred. ‘He gave me twelve years hard labour.’ ‘He gave me fifteen...’ Eddie was lost in thought, reliving his trial and incarceration. ‘Maybe there’ll be a time when they’ll treat poor people like us with some… pity?’ 46

‘I wouldn’t hold my breath. The likes of you and I will always be on a slippery slope.’ Eddie reminisced about his wife and child. A guilty tear fell from his eye. ‘When I think of my poor Mary… And my boy… forced into the workhouse because of me… I let them both down, and now they’re paying for it... I’ll get them out of there if it’s the last thing I do.’ Eddie rose to his feet. ‘Come on. Let’s go!’ Wilfred stood up upon his friend’s insistence. With his arm leaning on Eddie’s shoulder for support, they continued their escape together through the wilderness as fast as their weary legs would carry them. Eventually they reached a shallow stream of fast-running water. They ran along its length until an exhausted Wilfred could run no more. ‘It’s no good Eddie,’ gasped Wilfred. I can’t go any further. Leave me be. I’ll be alright. You go on without me.’ Wilfred was like the father that Eddie had never known. The thought of leaving him tore at his conscience and his heart. ‘I can’t leave you now, Wilf. We’ve come too far. I won’t!’ he cried. The desperate futility of their plight was now inescapable. As they contemplated their fate, their thoughts were interrupted by a sudden dazzling ray of light cast upon them that seemed to come from a flying contraption high above their heads. The flying machine hovered noisily in the same spot for what seemed like a lifetime. So fixated were the two men at this bizarre monster in the sky, that they failed to notice the approach of a pack of dogs followed by a group of men with rifles. They also failed to hear the gunshots that would take their lives… The army helicopter pilot later reported that he thought he had spotted two men far below, but he later dismissed it as a trick of the light, and returned to base. DL Health

Could your brain be asking for a different kind of rest? By Louise Garner, MBACP Integrative Counsellor We often think of rest as something physical, it’s putting our feet up, having an early night, taking a holiday or simply doing nothing for a while. However, sometimes, even after a good night’s sleep or a quiet weekend, we can still feel exhausted. Perhaps that’s because our body isn’t the only thing that needs rest. Our brain does too. Modern life gives our minds very little opportunity to switch off. Between emails, messages, social media, work, family responsibilities and being bombarded by endless information. Even when we are physically resting, our minds may still be processing, planning, remembering and worrying. Have you ever sat down at the end of the day, only to find that your thoughts suddenly become louder? Or gone to bed exhausted, but your brain starts replaying conversations, making lists or worrying about tomorrow? This is a sign that you may need a different kind of rest. Sometimes what we need isn’t more sleep, but mental space. If your brain has spent all day making decisions, solving problems and responding to other people’s needs, watching another hour of television or scrolling through your phone may not necessarily give it the recovery it needs. It can simply provide more information for your brain to process. Mental rest might instead mean sitting quietly with a cup of tea, going for a walk without listening to anything, spending time in nature, doing something creative, or allowing yourself a few minutes where you don’t have to achieve anything. There is also emotional rest. This can be particularly important if you spend much of your time being the person others rely upon. Being there for friends, family or colleagues can be rewarding but constantly managing your own emotions while supporting everyone else can become exhausting. Emotional rest might mean having a safe conversation with someone you trust, saying no when you don’t have the capacity, or simply giving yourself permission to acknowledge, “I’m finding things difficult at the moment.” What is your brain asking for? It can be useful to pause and ask yourself: Am I physically tired, mentally overloaded, emotionally drained, or a combination of all three? The answer might change what you need. If you’re mentally overloaded, you may benefit from fewer notifications, less multitasking and some uninterrupted quiet. If you’re emotionally drained, you may need connection, support or an opportunity to express what you’ve been carrying. This is the time to connect with the people who give you energy. And if you’re physically exhausted, perhaps the answer really is sleep. Rest isn’t one-size-fits-all. The goal isn’t simply to stop doing things; it’s to give yourself the kind of recovery you actually need. So, the next time you feel tired, rather than automatically asking, “When did I last sleep properly?”, try asking a different question, “What has my brain been carrying, and what kind of rest would help me put some of it down?” Sometimes, listening to the answer can be the first step towards feeling more like yourself again. If things feel difficult or overwhelming, don’t be afraid to reach out and speak to a mental health professional or helpline. 52
