Hopefully, you are reading this with the sun still shining, as we enjoy warmer summer weather! July was another busy month for the DL team. I’ve been busy supporting my marketing/social media clients and reviewing TV programmes for the BBC. You can catch me on BBC Radio Kent every Thursday at 4.35pm.
David has also been very busy with his racing driver clients, building and upgrading websites for them, and much more. We have also arranged our next Networking Event for the 23rd September.
Again, all advertising space in the August edition of DL sold out before the deadline, so if you are considering advertising, please get in touch ASAP to avoid disappointment!
In case you weren’t aware, David and I run Dartford Living alongside over 50 volunteer (thank you!) members of the local community. DL is the only independently run magazine, serving the local area with information and positive local stories!
Please get in touch if you would like to write an article for the magazine. If writing is not for you, then perhaps you could volunteer to deliver 100 or so magazines to your neighbours. You will guarantee your copy of the magazine and get a little exercise too!
If you email editor@dartfordliving.com we will add you to our e-newsletter mailing list and you will join over 75,000 local people who read the magazine and/or follow us on social media each month.
When you’ve finished reading the magazine please either keep it on your bookshelf, for when you need to use a local business, or pass it on to a friend or family member to read too.

Dartford Dances In Tribute To Len Goodman
Dartford Borough Council has proudly unveiled the town’s tribute to Len Goodman, celebrating the life and legacy of one of its most cherished residents.
The unveiling event took place on Wednesday 1st July, bringing together Len’s family and friends, residents from across the borough and some familiar faces, including Strictly judge Craig Revel Horwood, to celebrate Len’s enduring legacy.
After a successful professional dancing career and decades of teaching in Dartford town centre, Len Goodman went on to achieve worldwide fame as a judge on Strictly Come Dancing and Dancing With the Stars in the United States. He passed away in 2023, aged 78.
The newly unveiled interactive artwork, installed outside the Goodman Dance Academy in Market Street, honours Len’s remarkable contribution to the town. The academy itself holds special significance, having first been opened by Len in 1973.
Designed to encourage visitors to get moving, the artwork features inscriptions and dance steps set into the pavement, inviting passers-by to follow in Len’s footsteps while enjoying some of his best-loved sayings. Familiar phrases such as ‘Pickle my walnuts,’ ‘it’s all sizzle and no sausage,’ and ‘Seven!’ bring his unique wit and personality to life.
Artist Adrian Riley, who has created permanent artworks for the National Trust, English Heritage, and the NHS, worked closely with Len Goodman’s family throughout the design process to ensure the finished piece reflected his much-loved character.
Leader of the Council Jeremy Kite said: “It’s wonderful to see this tribute to Len Goodman unveiled here in the heart of Dartford. Len often described himself as ‘a dance teacher from Dartford who got lucky’, but to us he was so much more than that. He brought joy to millions, inspired generations of dancers, and never forgot the town he called home.
Len is greatly missed, and it has been a privilege to work with Adrian and Len’s family to bring this project to life. We hope this tribute serves as a fitting celebration of his remarkable legacy – a lasting reminder of a much-loved local man whose warmth, talent and enthusiasm helped get the whole nation dancing.”
Adrian Riley said: “It’s been a real delight to see this artwork take its place in the town and to watch people interact with it today at the unveiling. From the beginning, I wanted to create something that would encourage people to stop, smile and perhaps even try a few dance steps of their own. That felt like a fitting way to honour Len, who was someone who brought such joy, energy and connection to so many people through dance. I hope it inspires visitors for years to come and keeps his spirit alive in the heart of Dartford.”
Len’s wife, Sue, and his son, James, said: “We are delighted to see this tribute to Len unveiled and to know that his connection with Dartford will be celebrated for years to come. Adrian has created something truly special that captures Len’s personality, humour and love of dance. For more than 50 years, our family’s dance school has welcomed people through its doors, helping generations discover the joy of dancing. To have this wonderful tribute just outside the studio makes it all the more meaningful. We know Len would have been deeply touched by the affection and thought that has gone into it, and immensely proud to be remembered in this way.”
More Than An Art Class – A Place To Belong
Sometimes, picking up a pencil or paintbrush can be the start of something much bigger. At Seasons Art Class Dartford, our 14-week course isn’t just about learning how to draw and paint – it’s about meeting new people, finding time for yourself and becoming part of a friendly community.
Many of our students join because they want to try something new, but they stay because of the friendships they make along the way. Whether you’ve never painted before or haven’t been creative since school, you’ll be welcomed into a relaxed and supportive environment where everyone learns at their own pace.Taking time out each week to focus on something creative is a great way to unwind and switch off from the pressures of everyday life.
Research also suggests that creative activities and regular social interaction can help reduce loneliness and isolation while keeping the brain active, supporting long-term cognitive health.
The smiles, conversations and shared sense of achievement in every class are just as important as the artwork hanging on the walls. By the end of the course, many students are amazed not only by what they’ve created but by the friendships they’ve built too.
If you would like to attend our 14 week autumn term which starts on the 11th September, why not give us a call on: 01322 11197 to book your place.

Supporting Children Through Transitions: Preparing for the Move to School
For many families, September marks the start of a big new chapter. Beginning school is an exciting milestone, but it can also bring uncertainty for children and parents alike. New classrooms, unfamiliar adults, changing routines and the pace of the school day can feel overwhelming.
At KatieB Kids, we often remind families that transitions are not a single event; they are a process. Starting school is about far more than the first day in a new uniform. It is the emotional preparation that helps a child feel safe enough to embrace change and approach new experiences with confidence.
When people talk about “school readiness”, it is easy to focus on academic skills such as writing a name, recognising letters or counting. Whilst these are helpful, they are only one part of the picture. A successful transition is often supported far more by a child’s confidence, independence and emotional resilience.
A child who can separate from their parent with growing confidence, ask an adult for help, cope when something does not go to plan, or manage simple self-care tasks such as using the toilet or putting on a coat is already developing some of the skills that matter most. School readiness is not simply about what a child knows, but how secure they feel and how well supported they are to navigate a new environment.
There are lots of gentle, practical ways families can support this over the summer:
• Visit the school building so it begins to feel familiar.
• Talk positively about what to expect, whilst making space for worries and questions.
• Read books about starting school together.
• Practise the journey to school so the routine feels less unfamiliar.
• Encourage independence, such as carrying a bag, dressing themselves, washing hands and tidying belongings.
• Gradually adjust bedtime and morning routines before September.
It is equally important to make space for the emotional side of transition. Some children will be excited, while others may become clingier, more emotional or unsettled as September
approaches. This is entirely normal. Big changes often show up in behaviour before children can put their feelings into words. Rather than trying to remove every worry, it is often more helpful to acknowledge those feelings calmly and confidently.
Parents can also feel pressure for everything to go perfectly, but transitions rarely do. There may be tears at drop-off or tiredness after school, and neither means something is wrong. What matters most is the presence of calm, responsive adults who help children feel secure as they adapt.
As Dartford families prepare for the new school intake this September, remember that readiness is not about perfection. It is about helping children feel capable, connected and emotionally safe enough to take their next step. We have a limited number of nursery places available from September for families looking for high-quality, relationshipled Early Years education. To find out more, enquire or book a visit, please visit www.katiebkids.co.uk. We’d be delighted to welcome you and show you around.

Lemon & Blueberry Loaf Cake
By The Little Lavinia Bakery
Perfect for summer picnics and garden parties, this Lemon & Blueberry Loaf is finished off with a deliciously sharp drizzle.
What you will need
200g Soft Margarine
200g Caster Sugar
3 Large Eggs
200g Self raising Flour Juice and zest of 1 Lemon
120g Blueberries
For the Lemon Drizzle Juice of 1 Lemon
100g Icing Sugar
What to do:
Cream the Margarine and the Sugar together until light and fluffy.
Add the Eggs and mix to combine. Add the Self Raising Flour gradually until all mixed in. Add the juice and zest of the Lemon and the Blueberries. Stir just enough to combine.
Grease & Line a 2 Pint loaf tin.
Preheat the oven to 160 degrees Fan (180 degrees).
Pour the mixture into the loaf tin. Level the top and make a bit of a dip in the middle of the mixture.
Bake in the oven for 45-50 minutes – until a skewer comes out clean when inserted in the middle of the cake.
Place the tin on a cooling rack.
To make the Lemon Drizzle, stir the Lemon Juice into the Icing Sugar until dissolved. Using a skewer, make holes across the top of the cake. Spoon the Drizzle mix over the top of the cake to let it seep into the holes.
Leave to cool.
Enjoy!
Dehydrate the lemon peel to make a zesty Lemon powder. Use a vegetable peeler to avoid the bitter white layer and place the peel in a single layer. If you don’t have a dehydrator, you can bake the peel in an oven at 70 degrees for a couple of hours or in an air fryer at its lowest setting for about an hour.
Grind into a fine powder and use to add a citrus burst to homemade rubs or desserts.
Cohabiting couples and proposed landmark reform
By Melissa Gire, Associate Solicitor, Family & Matrimonial, CooperBurnett LLP
Modern relationships continue to evolve with a growing number of couples, now nearly a quarter, choosing to live together without getting married. However, a persistent myth endures - the idea that if you live with your partner for a long time, you automatically become ‘common law’ husband and wife. Common law marriage has, in fact, no legal standing and cohabiting couples do not automatically gain the rights and protections afforded to married couples or civil partners.
This misconception can have serious consequences. Cohabiting couples, even those with children or in long-term relationships, have limited legal protection. Property owned by one partner remains theirs unless rights are formally established. Financial contributions alone may not create ownership, leaving non-owning partners without a claim.
Cohabiting couples also may not be aware that they do not have the same inheritance rights as married couples. If one partner dies without a Will, the surviving partner does not automatically inherit their estate. Similarly, there are no automatic rights to pension benefits or use of bank accounts in the deceased’s sole name.
The lack of statutory protection often leaves cohabitants vulnerable and reliant on complex trusts and property laws to assert their interests, which is a legal process that can be costly, stressful and uncertain.
Recognising the challenges faced by cohabiting couples, the UK Government on 5 June 2026 launched a consultation on the legal protections for unmarried cohabiting couples. The consultation seeks views on whether reforms are needed to strengthen rights for cohabitants and address the gap between marriage and cohabitation. Further protections may include:
• Automatic inheritance: Currently, if your partner passes away and there is not a valid Will in place, you are not treated as next of kin. The Government plans to introduce Automatic Inheritance Laws for greater protection.
• Enhanced legal rights: Cohabiting partners may gain new legal rights if they have lived together for three years or share a child together.
• Domestic Abuse protection: Under new laws, the courts could give greater power to those experiencing domestic abuse, whether you are married or unmarried.
This consultation marks an important step towards addressing long-standing inequities in the law and recognising the reality of modern family life.
Until any reforms are enacted, cohabiting couples must take proactive steps to protect themselves. This includes seeking legal advice before moving in together, creating Cohabitation Agreements and ensuring clarity over property ownership and financial arrangements.
If you are considering cohabitation, our Family lawyers at CooperBurnett LLP are here to advise you and discuss whether a Cohabitation Agreement would be an appropriate option for you.
CooperBurnett’s main office is in Tunbridge Wells, however Melissa Gire can arrange a meeting with you in the Dartford area.

Stanhill Farm Maize Maze 2026
Stanhill Farm is pleased to welcome visitors back this summer as our Maize Maze runs from 18 July to 6 September 2026, with a brand-new theme inspired by the hit TV series The Traitors. Our attraction is independently created and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the programme.
Set on our working farm in Kent, the Maize Maze offers a fun-filled outdoor adventure for all ages, whether you’re visiting with family, friends, as a couple, or on your own. Visitors can enjoy not one but two mazes, including our main maze and a smaller mini maze, which is ideal for younger children and those who may not wish to tackle the full maze. We are also adding an exciting interactive twist, where visitors become the “faithful flock” and work together to uncover a hidden “traitor” somewhere on the farm. Along the way, visitors follow trail maps, solve clues, and collect golden cobs as they explore the maze.
Behind the scenes, the maze is carefully planned using GPS-guided drills to create precise designs across the field. A crossdrilling technique is used, sowing maize in two directions to produce a dense, upright crop that forms the pathways visitors explore in mid-summer. Covering around 8 acres, it is planted in May and carefully maintained throughout the season, with weather playing a key role in its growth.
Once planted, the team design themed games and trail activities, including cluehunting challenges and interactive puzzles that guide visitors through the experience. Game cards, stickers, and signage help bring the adventure to life.
At the end of the season in September, the maize is harvested and typically used as animal feed by a local farmer.
Alongside the maze, visitors can enjoy the café, farm shop, and on-site parking, making it a relaxed full day out. No booking is required, so we look forward to welcoming you during the summer holidays. For further information please visit: www.stanhillfarm.co.uk

Dartford Mela showcases local Talent
The Dartford Mela which took place on Sunday 28 June at the Open-Air Theatre in Central Park brought together local communities to celebrate the vibrant cultures of the Indian Sub-Continent with a British twist and was supported by Arts Council England.
Produced by Cohesion Plus in partnership with the Mayor of Dartford, Councillor Avtar Sandhu MBE, and a dedicated team of local community volunteers, the event showcased the very best of food, music, dance and cultural traditions, with a particular focus on performers and businesses from the Dartford community.
The afternoon featured a colourful programme of entertainment celebrating the rich diversity of the Indian Sub-Continent. Audiences enjoyed outstanding performances from the Four by Four Kings of Bhangra, Dartford Nepalese Community Dance Group, Soptosur Music School, local singer Sadia Afrin Ripa and Pacha Pucha Drumming Group. They were followed by Bengali Pop Star Nurjahan Shilpi and Bollywood vocalists Shama and Shahid.
The celebrations culminated in headline performances from Bhangra superstars Angrej Ali and Shin DCS, who had the audience singing and dancing throughout an energetic finale.
Gurvinder Sandher MBE DL said:
“The Dartford Mela is about bringing people together through arts, culture and community. It was wonderful to see hundreds of people enjoying performances from across the Indian Sub-Continent while celebrating the incredible talent we have here in Dartford. Events like these strengthen community cohesion, create opportunities for local artists and demonstrate the richness of our diverse communities. I would like to thank everyone who attended, our volunteers, performers, partners and supporters who made the day such a success.”
Mayor of Dartford, Councillor Avtar Sandhu MBE, added:
“It was a pleasure to work alongside Cohesion Plus and our local volunteers to deliver a successful Dartford Mela. The event showcased the diversity that makes our borough so special and provided a fantastic opportunity for residents of all backgrounds to come together in celebration.”
National Wellness Month: Small Steps Towards a Healthier You
Keep moving
August is National Wellness Month. This is a great opportunity to pause, reflect and think about your health and wellbeing. While many of us are busy juggling work, family and everyday responsibilities, looking after ourselves often slips to the bottom of the list. National Wellness Month reminds us that even small, positive changes can make a big difference to our long-term health.
Wellness is more than simply avoiding illness. It includes looking after your physical, mental, emotional and social wellbeing. Good health is built through everyday habits rather than quick fixes or fad diets. The aim is to make realistic changes that you can continue throughout the year.
Start with small changes
A good place to start is by setting yourself one simple health goal. This could be drinking more water, going for a daily walk, getting seven to eight hours of sleep each night or eating an extra portion of fruit and vegetables each day. Small, achievable goals are far more likely to become lasting habits. This time of year, with the better weather, we tend to gravitate towards a healthier lifestyle and spend more time outdoors and eating healthy foods. The trick is sustaining this year round.
Regular physical activity is one of the best things you can do for your health. The NHS recommends adults aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise each week. This does not have to mean joining a gym or going for a run. Brisk walking, cycling, gardening or dancing all count and can improve your heart health, strengthen muscles and bones, boost your mood and increase energy levels. Kent County Council have just produced a free app to reward you when you walk, wheel or cycle. WeRoam can be down loaded from the App store on Apple and android devices.
Eat well and stay hydrated
Eating a balanced diet is another important part of wellness. Choosing more fresh, whole foods while reducing highly processed foods helps provide the nutrients your body needs. Staying well hydrated is equally important, particularly during warmer weather.
Look after your mind
Mental wellbeing is just as important as physical health. Many people experience stress or anxiety at some point in their lives. Taking a few minutes each day to practise mindfulness, deep breathing or simply enjoying a hobby can help reduce stress. Spending time outdoors, connecting with family and friends and limiting screen time before bed can also improve both mental health and sleep quality.
Prevention is better than cure
National Wellness Month also reminds us of the importance of prevention. Health checks and screening can identify potential problems before symptoms develop, allowing treatment or lifestyle changes to begin earlier. Knowing your blood pressure, cholesterol levels and other health measures can help you make informed decisions about your health.
Every step counts
Building healthier habits doesn’t happen overnight. There will be days when plans don’t go as expected. The key is not to give up after one setback. Every healthy choice you make is a step in the right direction. This August, why not choose one positive change and make it part of your daily routine? Whether it’s walking more, sleeping better, managing stress or reconnecting with loved ones, every small action contributes to better health. Remember, wellness is a journey rather than a destination. By making your health a priority today, you’re investing in a happier, healthier future for yourself and those around you.

Senior Snippets: Making the Most of Everything & Saving Money During the Cost of Living Crisis
By Christina Uppenkamp Home Instead
Welcome to the latest edition of Senior Snippets: the monthly advisory column with the older members of our community in mind, brought to you by Christina Uppenkamp of Home Instead Dartford.
With the rising cost of living, finding simple ways to save money and reduce waste has never been more important—especially for older people living on a fixed income. The good news is that small changes in everyday habits can make a big difference.
Some of the ideas below were kindly shared with us from a reader as suggestions for a future article, and we’re pleased to include them here alongside additional practical tips.
Here are some easy-to-follow ways to help you stretch your budget further while keeping things simple and manageable at home.
Shop Smart and Save More
Buying fruit and vegetables in season is a great way to cut costs while enjoying fresher, tastier food. Seasonal produce is often cheaper and more nutritious. You can also save money by choosing dried foods like pasta, rice, and lentils, which last longer and are often better value than fresh alternatives.
Make Your Food Last Longer
A few clever storage tricks can help reduce waste and make your groceries go further:
• Choose whole lettuces instead of bagged salad—they last longer. Simply tear off what you need and store the rest wrapped in damp kitchen paper in the fridge.
• Freeze fresh herbs before they spoil—they’re even easier to chop when frozen.
• Keep an eye on fridge items and create a small “use first” section for foods nearing their use-by date.
• If you won’t use something in time, freeze it for later—just remember to label it with the date. A helpful tip: storing potatoes in a cool, dark place helps them last longer. Adding an apple occasionally may help slow sprouting, but do check them regularly.
Get More from What You Buy
Making the most out of every ingredient can help cut down on costs:
• Warm lemons or limes in the microwave for 10 seconds before squeezing to get more juice.
• Keep butter or margarine wrappers in the fridge and reuse them to grease baking trays—simple and waste-free!
Cook Once, Eat Twice
Cooking can sometimes feel like a chore, but preparing meals in batches can save both time and energy:
• Make larger portions and freeze leftovers for another day.
• Keep a few healthy ready meals in the freezer for when you don’t feel like cooking.
• Try using a slow cooker or microwave instead of the oven—they’re often cheaper to run.
Cut Down on Energy Use
Saving energy at home can make a noticeable difference to your bills:
• Only boil the amount of water you need in the kettle.
• Use lids on pans to reduce cooking time.
• Turn off appliances at the plug when not in use.
A Little Planning Goes a Long Way
Keeping things simple and organised can help make daily life easier:
• Store commonly used items at waist height to avoid bending or stretching.
• Use easy-grip kitchen tools if you find handling items difficult.
• Keep cupboards stocked with nutritious staples like tinned fish, beans, and frozen vegetables—they’re affordable, long-lasting, and healthy.
Saving money doesn’t have to mean going without. With a few practical changes, you can make your food last longer, reduce waste, and keep costs under control—all while maintaining a healthy, balanced lifestyle.
If you’re unsure about financial support available to you, it’s worth checking whether you’re eligible for schemes such as Pension Credit or the Warm Home Discount, which can provide valuable extra help.
I’d love to hear from you! To make a suggestion for a future Senior Snippets topic, please write to me at c.uppenkamp@dartford.homeinstead.co.uk or by post to Home Instead Dartford, St Fidelis House, St Fidelis Road, Erith, DA8 1AT.

Supporting your child and you through the transition to secondary school
By Louise Garner, MBACP Integrative Counsellor
The move from primary school to secondary school is one of the biggest milestones in a child’s life. New routines, new teachers, new friendships and greater independence can bring excitement, but it’s also completely normal for children to experience worry, uncertainty or anxiety as September approaches.
As a counsellor who supports both young people and adults with anxiety, and as a parent of a child preparing to start Year 7 myself, I understand this transition from both perspectives. One thing I’ve learned is that while we can’t remove every worry our children have, we can help them build the emotional resilience they need to face this new chapter with confidence.
One of the most common misconceptions is that anxiety is something we simply need to “talk away.” Conversations are important, but when children are overwhelmed, their nervous system often needs support before they can process reassurance. Anxiety is experienced in the body as much as it is in the mind.
Simple activities that help regulate the nervous system can make a remarkable difference. Encourage your child to move their body by going for a walk, kicking a football around the garden, dancing in the kitchen or riding a bike. Movement helps release nervous energy rather than allowing it to build inside.
Breathing exercises can also be incredibly effective. Slow, controlled breathing signals to the brain that it is safe, helping to calm the body’s stress response. Gentle vagus nerve exercises, humming, singing, stretching or even splashing cool water on the face are all simple techniques that help regulate the nervous system naturally.
Music is another wonderful tool. Singing along to a favourite song, having a family dance session or simply listening to calming music together creates connection while helping children shift out of a heightened state of anxiety. These moments may seem playful, but they are also supporting emotional wellbeing.
As parents, however, it’s easy to become so focused on our children’s emotions that we forget about our own. Watching your child navigate change can stir up anxiety, sadness and uncertainty for you too. We often carry questions such as, Will they make friends? Will they cope? Have I prepared them enough?
Children are incredibly perceptive. They don’t need us to be perfect, but they do benefit from seeing calm, regulated adults. Looking after your own wellbeing isn’t selfish—it’s one of the greatest gifts you can give your child.
Take time to regulate your own nervous system. Prioritise sleep where possible, spend time outdoors, practise mindful breathing and stay connected with supportive friends or family. If you’re feeling anxious, acknowledge those feelings with compassion rather than criticism. The calmer you feel, the more secure your child is likely to feel.
Most importantly, remember that starting secondary school is a transition, not a test. There will be exciting days, challenging days and everything in between. Your child doesn’t need you to have all the answers—they need to know that whatever happens, you’ll be there beside them.
Sometimes the most powerful support isn’t finding the perfect words. It’s helping both yourself and your child feel safe, calm and connected. From that place, confidence has room to grow, and together you can navigate this important new beginning with resilience and hope.
Jim Dickson MP for Dartford
As your local MP I am working hard to make sure your voice is heard in Government. Whether you are a resident or a business, what matters to you, matters to me.
My focus remains to get Dartford moving. Improving road congestion, supporting the Lower Thames Crossing and pushing for the repair of Galley Hill are my priorities. The NHS and policing are other key areas I am working on. Residents tell me the new Community Diagnostic Centre is a welcome addition to our community and I am in regular touch with Darent Valley Hospital to ensure they know the issues you face. I am working with the police to press the Government for action on catapult crime. And I am supporting many residents’ groups in their fight against property management companies. I am here working for you. Please get in touch to let me know how I can help.
