Hopefully, by the time you read this the sun is still shining, as we enter spring! March was another busy month for the DL team. I’ve been busy supporting my marketing/social media clients and reviewing TV programs for the BBC. You can catch me on BBC Radio Kent every Thursday at 4.35pm.
David has also been very busy with his racing driver clients, building and upgrading websites for them, and much more. Our most recent next networking event was extremely popular and our next event will take place on 9th June at Dartford Grammar School, with over 100 attendees expected. Visit www.dartfordlivinglive.co.uk to book your spot for this event. It’s totally free to attend!
Again, all advertising space in the April edition of DL sold out before the deadline, so if you are considering advertising, please get in touch ASAP to avoid disappointment!
In case you weren’t aware, David and I run Dartford Living alongside over 50 volunteer (thank you!) members of the local community. DL is the only independently run magazine, serving the local area with information and positive local stories!
Please get in touch if you would like to write an article for the magazine. If writing is not for you, then perhaps you could volunteer to deliver 100 or so magazines to your neighbours. You will guarantee your copy of the magazine and get a little exercise too!
If you email editor@dartfordliving.com we will add you to our e-newsletter mailing list and you will join over 75,000 local people who read the magazine and/or follow us on social media each month.
When you’ve finished reading the magazine please either keep it on your bookshelf, for when you need to use a local business, or pass it on to a friend or family member to read too.

Dartford’s key supporter of community arts announced as important partner for ellenor’s 2026 Art Trail
The Trafalgar Entertainment Trust, endorsers of The Orchard Theatre’s Creative Learning programme, is proud to announce its official partnership with local hospice charity ellenor for the upcoming “Dartford We’re Going on a Bear Hunt” art trail, set to take over the borough from July to September 2026.
As a cornerstone of Dartford’s cultural landscape, The Orchard Theatre will play a multi-faceted role in the trail, acting as a sculpture sponsor and providing vital venue space for the project. Inspired by the classic children’s book by Michael Rosen and Helen Oxenbury, the trail will feature 80 hand-painted bears—30 Big Bears and 50 Bear Cubs— forming a vibrant, free discovery trail across Dartford and Bluewater.
The partnership represents a merging of two of Dartford’s most vital sectors: the arts and community care. Beyond sponsoring a sculpture, the theatre will lend its “spades of creativity” to ensure the trail is an immersive experience for families and visitors.
Ethan Duffy, Creative Learning Business Manager at the Trafalgar Entertainment Trust, said: “We are delighted to support such an imaginative and community-centred project. As a charity dedicated to widening access to the arts, we believe strongly in creative initiatives that bring people together and spark curiosity. During this period of transition for The Orchard Theatre, it is vital that local communities continue to feel connected to creativity and to one another. Supporting this trail allows us to champion ellenor’s important work for families across North Kent and Bexley, while helping to bring a sense of joy and shared pride to the heart of Dartford.”
The art trail, delivered in partnership with Wild in Art and Walker Books, aims to raise significant funds for ellenor. The charity provides specialized hospice care for both adults and children facing life-limiting illnesses, offering support in their inpatient ward, within the community, and in patients’ own homes.
Georgie Packer, Project Manager for the Art Trail at ellenor, also added: “Next summer, the Dartford Bear Hunt will see more than eighty Bears and Bear Cubs take to the streets of Dartford and Bluewater, engaging the local community, from businesses to schools and local groups, all brought to you by ellenor, Dartford’s local hospice. This trail will be equal parts community, creativity, and compassion.
We’re thrilled to be working with The Trafalgar Entertainment Trust on this exciting project. We greatly appreciate their support through sculpture sponsorship, venue space and their spades of creativity! We know that having such a key Dartford landmark involved will help ensure the first ever trail lands with real impact.”
The “maiden voyage” of the first giant fibreglass bear has already turned heads at Bluewater and Dartford town centre when it was unveiled, offering just a glimpse of the whimsical transformation coming in 2026.
About the Trafalgar Entertainment Trust’s Work in Dartford
Trafalgar Entertainment Trust, together with their Creative Learning teams, is committed to ensuring that communities in Dartford continue to have access to meaningful, high quality creative experiences. While The Orchard Theatre undergoes essential renovation work, their focus remains on sustaining opportunities for participation, connection and creativity across the area.
The theatre’s refurbishment began after its temporary closure in September 2023. Significant roof replacement and modernisation works are now underway. As is common with major projects, additional essential updates have been identified, including improvements that will strengthen accessibility, modernise operations and ensure the venue can serve its community for many years to come.
Throughout this period, the Trust and Creative Learning teams remain active in supporting local engagement. They continue to provide pathways for young people, creative opportunities for schools and community groups, and programmes that promote wellbeing, belonging and inclusive participation.
They look forward to the reopening of The Orchard Theatre in 2026, when their activities will once again be able to take place within a fully renewed, accessible and future ready cultural home for Dartford
Dragon’s Retreat Respite Unit Achieves ‘Outstanding’ Rating from Ofsted for Second Consecutive Year
Dragon’s Retreat, a vital short breaks service run by local charity We Are Beams, has once again been awarded the highest possible Ofsted rating of ‘Outstanding’, following a rigorous inspection. This marks the second year in a row the service has achieved this exceptional recognition.
With six fully fitted bedrooms, Dragon’s Retreat is an independent short break unit providing overnight care for children and young people with disabilities up to the age of 18 years.
The charity provides a home-from-home enriching experience, promoting independent living skills and ensuring the children or young person has fun whilst staying there.
The report, which closely examined every element of service delivery, recognised the unwavering commitment of the team to providing exceptional care and enriching experiences for children and young people with disabilities and complex needs.
Robin Adams, Registered Manager of Dragon’s Retreat, is delighted of the achievement:
“We are incredibly proud to have received the Ofsted Outstanding rating for the second year in a row. This recognition is a testament to the continued dedication and hard work of the whole team. We remain committed to delivering the highest standard of care and support, ensuring that every young person at Dragon’s Retreat feels valued, empowered, and has the opportunity to thrive. We couldn’t be prouder of the positive impact we’re making on the lives of these children and their families.”
The Ofsted accolade reflects a year of intense dedication by the entire team, who have strived not only to enhance the quality of care but also to create an environment that enables children and young people to learn, grow, and prepare for adulthood, while having fun and building meaningful friendships.
In addition to this amazing achievement Beams is celebrating 30 incredible years of supporting disabled children and their families.
The charity has big plans to continue to lead the way in delivering support services, with this latest achievement marking a significant milestone in its mission to empower young lives.

Nurturing Nature: Growing Environmental Awareness from the Earliest Years
“If children don’t grow up knowing about nature and appreciating it, they will not understand it. And if they don’t understand it they won’t protect it. And if they don’t protect it, who will?” – Sir David Attenborough
Some of the most meaningful learning in early childhood happens outside. It might begin with something very simple. A child planting a seed, watching a worm in the soil, or noticing that the same tree looks different in spring than it did in winter.
These small moments help children build a relationship with the natural world. In early childhood education we know that when children spend time observing and caring for nature, they develop curiosity, patience and a growing sense of responsibility for the environment around them.
Early childhood is an important time for shaping attitudes towards sustainability. Children who have regular opportunities to explore nature are more likely to value it and want to protect it as they grow older. Experiences outdoors also support physical development, emotional wellbeing and problem solving, while encouraging children to ask questions and make discoveries for themselves.
One powerful way to support this learning is through seasonal planting. When children plant seeds and watch them grow, they begin to understand that food and flowers do not simply appear on supermarket shelves. They come from the earth and require time, care and the right conditions to grow.
Planting also teaches children patience and observation. They learn that growth happens gradually. They notice subtle changes in leaves, stems and colours. Even very young children can take pride in watering plants or checking how something has changed since yesterday.
The good news for families is that these experiences do not require a large garden or specialist equipment. There are many simple ways to nurture children’s connection with nature at home.
You might start by planting something small together. Herbs such as basil, mint or chives grow well on a windowsill and
give children the opportunity to smell, touch and taste what they have grown. Cress is another easy option that grows quickly and allows children to see results within days.
Another simple idea is to encourage children to notice seasonal changes when you are out and about. Local parks and green spaces provide wonderful opportunities for this. Whether you are walking through Central Park in Dartford, exploring a woodland path, or simply noticing the trees on your street, children can begin to recognise the rhythms of nature through what they see, hear and feel.
Families can also involve children in small sustainable habits at home. Sorting recycling together, reducing food waste or caring for plants all help children understand that their actions can make a difference.
What matters most is the sense of connection that grows through these everyday experiences. When children feel that they are part of the natural world, they are more likely to care about protecting it.
Sometimes the most powerful starting point is the simplest one of all. Planting a seed, watching it grow, and sharing the quiet wonder of nature together.

Melt the Chocolate and set aside to cool slightly. Chop the Cherries into halves. Ensure all stones are removed if using fresh! In a large bowl, beat together the Caster Sugar and Butter/Margarine until pale and fluffy. Add the Eggs.
Mix in the Flour and Cocoa Powder – just until combined. Try not to overmix! Stir in the melted Chocolate and all but 10 Cherries - make sure everything is combined. Spoon into cupcake cases (I usually weigh 50g of mix into each case to ensure an even bake).
Bake at 160° C (140° Fan) for 15-20 minutes until they are well risen and you can insert a skewer to a cake and it comes out clean - without any sign of the mix.
Take the cakes out of the oven and allow to cool completely.
Whisk the Double Cream until soft peaks form and pipe or swirl onto each cake. Top with the reserved Cherries.
Enjoy! xxx

As your local MP I am working hard to make sure your voice is heard in Government. Whether you are a resident or a business, what matters to you, matters to me.
My focus remains to get Dartford moving. Improving road congestion, supporting the Lower Thames Crossing and pushing for the repair of Galley Hill are my priorities. The NHS and policing are other key areas I am working on. Residents tell me the new Community Diagnostic Centre is a welcome addition to our community and I am in regular touch with Darent Valley Hospital to ensure they know the issues you face. I am working with the police to press the Government for action on catapult crime. And I am supporting many residents’ groups in their fight against property management companies. NO CALL-OUTFEE! NOVAT!
By Jane Stevenson
“Technology is anything that wasn’t around when you were born.” — Alan Kay, Computer Scientist
As many readers know, I’m desperately trying to get the most out of my shiny new tech appliances.
I’ve been helped in this endeavour by my lovely audiologist who has paired my hearing aids with my phone. Now I have voice notification advising me who’s calling and whether it is suspected spam; I receive clear and precise directions when driving and have a gadget that attaches the TV so I can hear programmes through the aids (although I haven’t actually set this up - too technical!).
However, the best thing by far is that I can now listen to music on the go, in the comfort of my own head. I decided to fully commit to entering this brave new world and so deleted my entire Spotify library, figuring it was time to review my tastes and try new stuff. I’m not certain it was the best idea I’ve had!
The problem is, I am firmly stuck in the classic rock era, with old stalwarts, The Who, Thin Lizzy, Bon Jovi and the like. I’m out of touch with current trends, and not too impressed with the little I have heard. Musically I’m narrow minded.
Turning to friends for advice about new musical talent wasn’t as easy as I’d hoped. Many of them still enjoy older music citing the quality of musicianship, lyrics and the lack of similar music in the 2020s. I’ve also learned not to denigrate a friend’s favourite, having gotten into too many differences of opinion about the talent of Jimi Hendrix and Mick Jagger.
It wasn’t all bad news though. Some suggested I check out YouTube or Amazon Music for ideas, while others gave me names of artists I’d never heard of, but am glad I found. Thanks to YouTube I’ve revisited the ‘old guys’ and rediscovered bands from my youth I’d forgotten. I’ve
downloaded some early 1970s psychedelic rock, some overblown and grand pieces (think Emerson Lake and Palmer). From the 1960s, I’ve got The Yardbirds and The Doors.
Still old stuff, I know, but there is a sea change in choice taking place. I’ve downloaded some of my old favourites, but also embraced some film music, jazz and popular classical music. Harry Styles has crept in; George Ezra and Birdie have arrived. Several of John Williams’s film scores are there and one or two folk songs.
Away from my comfort zone but fast becoming favourites are Estas Tonnes and Adam Ben Ezra. A complete surprise was finding out that the actor Hugh Laurie, plays the blues like he was born to it.
Slowly, I am building a musical library to keep me entertained at home, in the car or at the beach. Maybe technology isn’t such a bad thing after all.
Winter’s a Drag
Did anyone else think January and February went on a bit too long? Like the first Monday back at work after a wonderful holiday. That awful dragging of time, the continuous grey, overcast skies, rain and chill wind.
It gets you down, elevates your melatonin levels, making you sleepy and can bring about mild depression. Everything seems to take longer to do, with less satisfaction gained at the outcome.
Thankfully April is almost here, with a suggestion of better weather ahead. We could all benefit from warmer, sunnier days, lighter evenings and more time outdoors. Bring on the halcyon days of summer, barbeques, chilling in the evenings and glorious days on the beach. I’m ready for them!
Take care people
DAODS Brings the Music of Queen to Dartford with Explosive Production of ‘We Will Rock You’
This April, the spirit of rock ‘n’ roll arrives at Orchard West as the award-winning DAODS (Dartford Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society) presents the global phenomenon, We Will Rock You.
Running from Wednesday 15th April to Saturday 18th April 2026, this high-octane musical features over 20 of Queen’s most iconic hits, including Bohemian Rhapsody, Killer Queen, Somebody to Love, and the legendary title track, We Will Rock You.
Set hundreds of years in the future, the story follows a world where individuality is banned and all music is computer-generated (perhaps more poignant now with AI being used to create music today). A group of “Bohemians” look to a dreamer named Galileo to find the lost instruments and restore the power of rock. It is a fist-pumping, foot-stomping anthem to freedom and self-expression that promises to leave audiences cheering for more.
“We are thrilled to bring such an energetic and beloved show to our local stage. After the challenges of the last few years, there is no better way to celebrate the resilience of live theatre than with the timeless, empowering music of Queen. The cast and crew have poured their hearts into making this a spectacle that Dartford won’t forget”. – Tal Rosen, Theatre Director.
DAODS has a long-standing reputation for professional-quality community theatre in Dartford. This production marks a significant moment for the society as they perform at Orchard West, continuing to bring high-quality entertainment to the area while the main Orchard Theatre readies to reopen in December 2026.
DAODS – We Will Rock You
Wednesday 15 April – Saturday 18 April 2026
Orchard West, Dartford
Tickets from £19.50
Book online: orchardwest.co.uk or via the Box Office at 0343 310 0033.
DAODS Chairman – Paul Farlie
Moving from the traditional Orchard Theatre to the temporary Orchard West venue has been a big transition for the town. What has it meant for the society to keep the “theatre flame” burning in Dartford while the main venue is completing the final stage of its refurbished?
It has meant everything! DAODS unique selling point is producing large scale musicals in a professional theatre. With the closure of The Orchard Theatre we were left without ‘a home’.
The Orchard West is a great place to perform. The backstage area is huge, which makes it so easy to house large casts. It also generates a great feeling of togetherness, as the back stage area has lots of space to mix in communal areas, as well as having large dressing rooms for the ensemble.
The stage is fantastic and is so big. It means we can have full size sets on the stage, not having to compromise. We can utilise other spaces to put on our productions, including our own premises, Heathfields Hall, where we put on smaller, more intimate productions, and The Dartford Outdoor Theatre, where we are putting on an exciting version of Come From Away, in July this year.
However for our large scale productions, we need the scale of The Orchard Theatre and Orchard West. We were devastated that we had to cancel our production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang in 2023, however with the building of Orchard West, we have been able to continue to produce large scale shows, like Legally Blonde and Jesus Christ Superstar. With the confirmed opening of The Orchard Theatre at the end of 2026, we are extremely excited to be able to finally stage our production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, in April 2027, 3 1/2 years after its original performance date, with the fully operational UK Touring flying car!!
DAODS has been a part of Dartford since 1906. How does it feel to bring such a high-energy, modern rock anthem like We Will Rock You to the stage during this unique chapter of the society’s history?
As you say, DAODS have been producing shows in the Dartford area for almost 120 years! We produce all types of shows, from traditional classics like West Side Story and Singing In The Rain, to more up to date musicals like Shrek and Legally Blonde. The Juke Box musical, like We Will Rock You, is another amazing type of show to perform. The songs are well known classics, therefore the audience can recognise every one.
The final ingredient for this show has to be Orchard West! The venue is perfect as a live music venue, and therefore for a show that is based on the songs of one of the biggest, most well known bands of all time, the end result is spectacular! The audience can get up and dance, clap long, and feel like they are once again at a Queen gig!
Leading Cast
(To Galileo/Scaramouche) Your characters are looking for “The Vibe” and a sense of belonging. How does it feel to perform these songs about individuality in a world where everyone is forced to be the same?
A (Ethan Oswald, Galileo(LEFT) ): As a performer, it feels incredibly cathartic. These songs let me express everything Galileo been forced to suppress, confusion, hope, and the need to belong. Performing such incredible songs by Queen as this character about individuality is such a powerful message everyone seeing this can relate to and feel empowered.
(To Killer Queen (right)) You get to play the ultimate “boss.” How do you tap into that power, and what is your favourite Queen anthem to perform when you’re “taking over the world”?
A (Katy George, Killer Queen): Well, I’m quite a quiet person usually so being a loud powerful character is not the norm for me. However, I am channelling everything I’ve learned from watching Ru Paul’s Drag Race to get that full diva mode switched on!
My favourite Queen anthem is definitely It’s A Kind Of Magic, it’s such an amazing sing and the harmonies are just incredible!

Meningitis Awareness
Meningitis is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition that involves inflammation of the protective membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. It can be caused by viruses, bacteria, or, more rarely, fungi. Viral meningitis is often less severe. However, bacterial meningitis (meningococcal meningitis) can lead to both meningitis and septicaemia (blood poisoning). It can progress very quickly, particularly in young people, and requires urgent medical treatment.
Many of you will be aware of the recent outbreak in Canterbury, caused by the Meningococcal group B bacteria.
Symptoms of meningitis
Recognising the symptoms of meningitis early can save lives. Symptoms can develop quickly and may include:
• Sudden high fever
• Severe headache
• Stiff neck
• Vomiting
• Sensitivity to light
• Confusion or difficulty waking
• Cold hands and feet, limb pain
• A rash that does not fade when pressed (this can be a late sign)
In babies and young children, symptoms can differ slightly and may include a high-pitched cry, a bulging soft spot on the head, and poor feeding.
Because meningitis can worsen quickly, anyone experiencing these symptoms—especially in combination—should seek immediate medical attention.
How it spreads
Meningococcal bacteria spread through close contact, such as:
• Kissing
• Sharing drinks, utensils, or vapes
• Coughing and sneezing in close proximity
This explains why outbreaks often occur in universities or social settings, where people live and interact closely.
Vaccinations
In the UK, we have a comprehensive vaccination strategy to reduce the incidence of meningitis. One key component is the MenACWY vaccination programme, which protects against four major strains of meningococcal bacteria (A, C, W, and Y). This vaccine is routinely offered to 13 or 14 year olds at school. There is a catch-up programme for those aged up to 25 years who missed this vaccine. If you are at risk due to work, travel or medical conditions you may also be eligible for this vaccine.
In addition, infants receive vaccines that protect against other forms of meningitis, including those caused by meningitis B, pneumococcus and Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) bacteria. These vaccinations are delivered as part of the standard childhood immunisation schedule. Meningitis B was added to the childhood immunisations for babies born on or after 1 July 2015. Children under 2 years who have missed this vaccine can still have this vaccine. This may also be available to patients who have asplenia, splenic dysfunction or complement disorder.
Vaccines have significantly reduced cases over the past decades. Other childhood illnesses that are part of the
vaccination campaign, such as Measles and Chicken Pox, can also cause meningitis.
Public advice
To prevent the risk of developing meningitis:
• Ensure that you have vaccinations that you are offered
• Avoid sharing drinks, cigarettes, or vapes
• If you are a close contact and are offered a one-off preventative antibiotic to reduce the risk of developing or passing on the infection, please take this up
If you are concerned that you or someone you know may have meningitis:
• Seek immediate medical help if symptoms appear (call NHS 111 or 999 in emergencies)
• Check on friends who are unwell—symptoms can worsen rapidly
Key messages
While meningitis remains rare, this outbreak highlights how quickly it can spread in closecontact environments. Early treatment and rapid public health action are critical to saving lives and preventing further cases.
It is important that we continue to raise awareness. Initiatives led by organisations such as Meningitis Now (www.meningitisnow.org) aim to educate the public about symptoms, encourage vaccination uptake, and support those affected by the disease.

Stress has a reputation for being something to avoid entirely, but that is neither realistic nor should you. A certain level of stress is not only normal, but also necessary. In small, manageable amounts, stress sharpens focus, boosts motivation, and helps you respond to everyday challenges. It’s what gets you out of bed in the morning, helps you meet deadlines, and enables you to adapt to change. The problem is when stress becomes constant and overwhelming, tipping from something helpful into something that drains your energy and you start to feel the physical symptoms.
Reducing stress on a daily basis begins with recognising that it’s a balancing act. Rather than trying to remove stress completely, the goal is to regulate it. This starts with paying attention to your body and mind throughout the day. You may notice tension building in your shoulders, your thoughts becoming rushed, or your breathing becoming shallow. These small signals are early indicators that your stress levels are rising, so what can you do about it?
Simple, regular habits can make a meaningful difference. Taking a few moments to slow your breathing, getting some fresh air, or allowing yourself a brief mental break can interrupt the build-up of pressure. These are not indulgences; they are practical ways of helping your nervous system return to a steadier state. Over time, these small resets train your body to recover more quickly from stress, rather than staying stuck in it.
Routine is also very important. Moving between periods of focus and periods of rest allows your energy to be used more sustainably. When everything feels urgent and continuous, stress naturally accumulates. Creating even gentle boundaries—such as finishing work at a reasonable time or limiting how often you check your phone—can protect your attention and reduce the sense of being constantly “on edge.” Rest is not something to earn after exhaustion; it is something that prevents exhaustion in the first place.
Be kind to yourself, many of us take on too much. Want something done, ask a busy person, right? It is important to take your lunch break and get outside as and when you can, taking a walk in your lunch break, getting some vitamin d and fresh air can do you the world of good. Making sure you take your annual leave, regularly. Block out days off, when you don’t have to rush, where you can just sit and read a book or watch your favourite film. This is not lazy, this is self-care. You will be a more productive and a happier person for it.
If you find yourself at home, maybe you’re not working currently, or find yourself unable to work, or you’re retired., you still need to have a break in your day, whether that’s a hobby, sitting in the garden, escapism in books, tv or gaming or why not volunteer, create a routine, that includes rest.
Connection as ever plays a role. Sharing how you feel with someone you trust, a friend or loved one can really help and can remind you that you are not carrying everything alone.
If, despite these efforts, stress begins to feel persistent, overwhelming, or difficult to manage, it is important to take that seriously. Speaking with a mental health professional can provide guidance, support, and practical tools tailored to your situation. Managing stress is something we all at some time need to work on. It’s about taking care of yourself, your mind as well as your physical health.

The Dartford that i know
For me, a place that sparks conversations and flickers of life that so certainly can grow.
Bridges that oversee, time that keeps on ticking all clear to see if we pause long enough.
Misty alleys whisper, “I am here.”
Like unopened envelopes holding quiet worth waiting to be explored.
Paths that lead to open spaces, spaces that can light up so many faces.
Nature calling, intertwined with all that lives here and sometimes within ourselves is calling too.
Connection. Community. Curiosity shared in spoonfuls, passed from one to another.
Dartford a town often overlooked, overheard but not always listened to. More than a gateway to motorways.
It is a town rich with heart. So let us see beyond what our eyes first choose to notice.
A place far more than it has ever been given credit for.
