Welcome to the September edition of Darlington Monthly! Some bad news first: in case you hadn’t noticed, it’s now the end of the summer. But on a more positive note, Darlington remains as busy as ever throughout September, and you can discover it all with a little help from our ‘What’s On’ section on page 46, as well as various features throughout this issue of your favourite monthly community magazine. Some of these events may be a surprise to you.You might not exactly associate Darlington with festivals, for instance, but we’ve taken a closer look at some great ones coming up this month, including the Rhythm & Blues Festival from 14th to 16th September (page 22) and the part-music, part-comedy Last Train Home Festival on Saturday 22nd (page 38). Alternatively, of course, you could simply head to the town’s Vue Cinema, catching a flick like Ant-Man and the Wasp, as reviewed by our copywriter Gavin Lenaghan on page 14. After such recent wellreceived Marvel epics as Avengers: Infinity War and Black Panther, is this lower-profile addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) also any less impressive than its better-known brethren? As always here at Darlington Monthly, we are immensely appreciative of our advertisers who do so much to make the magazine possible. Please do call upon their services, mentioning our publication, and don’t forget that you only need to call 07500 828 396 or email sales@darlingtonmonthly.co.uk to find out more about becoming one yourself, making the most of our discounted long-term plans. That’s it for now – we’ll see you again next month, and in the meantime, keep sharing your thoughts with us so that we can continue making our magazine the best it can be!

PART EXCHANGE OPPORTUNITIES AVAILABLE ON COUNTRYSIDE LIVING WITH MILLER HOMES Considering moving house and looking for your dream home in Middleton St George that ticks all of the boxes? Well look no further than Hunters Fold from Miller Homes. Located on the northern edge of the village, this charming development of brand new homes combines tranquility and vibrancy, as it is surrounded by farmland yet just four miles from the centre of Darlington. Buyers have the perfect opportunity to put down roots in a peaceful rural setting, as a varied choice of three, four and fivebedroom high quality homes are currently available, with prices starting from £182,950*. Part Exchange† is available on a selection of homes including The Ryton, a four-bedroom detached home which is ideally suited to family living. Priced at £289,950*, this popular housetype has a selection of enviable key features including a beautiful bay window in the lounge, double doors opening up the lounge to the kitchen and dining area, an en-suite to the master bedroom with fitted wardrobes, and a Jack and Jill en-suite to bedrooms three and four, plus a single garage. Part Exchange from Miller Homes allows buyers to swap their old home for a brand new Miller home, enabling them to upsize, downsize or swap like-for-like without the task of having to sell their current home. If a property qualifies for Part Exchange, Miller Homes will guarantee to buy at a price based on independent valuations. This eliminates advertising costs and estate agent’s fees and also allows buyers to continue living in their current property until their new home is ready for them to move into. Buyers who reserve The Ryton can also benefit from £1,000 towards their legal fees**, and be safe in the knowledge that their home will be built to the highest of standards, as Hunters Fold’s site manager Simon Robson was recently recognised by the National House Building Council’s Pride in the Job Quality Awards.

6

Andrew Somerville, associate sales director at Miller Homes North East, said: “The locations of our developments are carefully chosen, meaning buyers who settle into life at Hunters Fold are within the tranquility of a countryside setting, yet not too far from the buzz of the centre of Darlington. “We are building a community of desirable homes to appeal to a variety of buyers, from those stepping onto the property ladder for the first time, to families looking for their next home, or downsizers. To make it as easy as possible for those on the move, in addition to Part Exchange, we have a range of purchase incentives available on selected plots. “Anyone who is interested in finding out more is welcome to visit the development and speak to its dedicated sales adviser, as well as view the stunning showhomes.” To help house hunters get a taste of life at Hunters Fold, the three-bedroom Darwin and four-bedroom Stevenson showhomes are open for viewings from Thursday to Monday, 10:30am to 5:30pm. For more information on the development and offers currently available, contact the development’s sales centre on 03333 318 804 or visit https://www.millerhomes.co.uk/new-homes/northeast/hunters-fold.aspx Disclaimers: *Upgrades available at additional costs. †Part Exchange is subject to availability, status and eligibility. DMALAW ‘The Link’ is our very own ‘law shop’ walk-in centre (and still the only one we know of in the country we may add!). We are now well in to our 3rd year here at The Link and are very much a part of the local community in Darlington. We are a legal walk-in centre where, there is no hassle, no stress and all our initial consultations are free of charge. In the time we have been open we have proudly assisted over 2000 members of the local community. We offer free help and guidance and people can come and speak to us at any time during our opening hours and don’t need to make an appointment to do so. You can just come through our door and speak with our solicitors, lawyers and advisors. We have experience across a range of areas of law; family matters, crime, personal injury, wills and probate, employment, debt recovery, civil litigation, contract

disputes, housing, medical negligence, conveyancing and many others. We opened The Link in direct response to the cuts to legal aid funding to help people access justice. Our aim is to help, support, guide and encourage people who have legal issues but aren’t certain what they need to do to resolve them, or when they feel there is nowhere else to turn in their hour of need. This is exactly what The Link is about; what we do; who we are and we are very proud of that! What does the future hold for The Link? Well, we are going to be here for at least another 3 years and in that time we are sure that we will continue to get bigger and better and assist more and more of you. Why is that? Because we think The Link works! We are at 40 Skinnergate, Darlington and all our consultations are free of charge and in confidence.

FILM REVIEW: ANT-MAN AND THE WASP

After such a gut-punch conclusion to Marvel’s last monumental team-up event, Avengers: Infinity War earlier this year, it might seem an anti-climax to reacquaint ourselves next with the Cinematic Universe’s quite literally smallest superheroes, Scott Lang or AntMan and Hope van Dyne, appearing as Wasp. But it’s well worth persisting with a sequel to 2015’s Ant-Man that turns out to be a diminutive delight in more ways than one, serving up a rather lower-profile charm than the thematically muscular Black Panther or the decidedly hefty Infinity War. Let’s set out some vital background... The circumstances of Ant-Man’s formation may have seemed far from auspicious, with the movie having languished in development for some time and switched director from Edgar Wright to Peyton Reed, but the latter change proved a well-judged one. The first special-effects blockbuster that Reed had ever helmed saw him make good use of his prior experience in comedy, but it was also generally agreed that his inexperience showed in his attempts to marry such humour with the requisite Marvel action and originstory elements. But the Bring It On and Yes Man director’s craft has been suitably honed on this sequel in which he shows his skill in balancing the heavy machinery of the Marvel superhero universe with a light, fast and dizzying vibe that prevents even the combat scenes from ever feeling overwhelming. Both familiar and new faces – as well as ambiguous motives Speaking of “background”, in case you were wondering why Lang, played by Paul Rudd, didn’t even feature in Infinity War despite appearing in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, Ant-Man and the Wasp gives you your answer: he’s been spending the last two years in house arrest, this having been part of his deal to get out of prison after his assistance to Steve Rogers violated the Sokovia Accords. The story is picked up in real time in Ant-Man and the Wasp, with Lang only days away from the end of his house arrest when he

14

comes back into contact with onetime associates Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) and van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly). They’ve been on the run from the FBI for the last two years, during which time, they’ve assembled a lab – able to be reduced on demand to the size of carry-on luggage – featuring a Quantum Tunnel in which they hope to rescue Hank’s wife and van Dyne’s mother, Janet van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer), who went missing in the Quantum Realm about three decades earlier. Hank had believed the Quantum Realm was impossible to escape from, prior to Lang proving this hypothesis wrong in AntMan. But as the trio join forces once more, they need to somehow fend off antagonists such as Ava Starr / Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), a woman whose molecular instability means you can have a level of sympathy with her desperation to get hold of the lab. Much less could be said of the rather more stereotypically low-level criminal, Sonny Burch (Walton Goggins). A low-key and captivating caper With the likes of Laurence Fishburne, as Pym’s old friend Bill Foster, and the hilarious Michael Pena as Lang’s former cellmate and subsequent colleague Luis, also putting in compelling turns, Ant-Man and the Wasp provides a refreshing palate cleanser after some of the recent toweringly ambitious Marvel epics. It’s a relatively lighthearted and amusing, but well-constructed caper that showcases the studio’s ability to tell memorable and rewarding stories on a smaller scale.

Employment Round Up This summer has seen exceptionally high temperatures, and even here in the tundra regions of the NE we have enjoyed long, hot days! Great if you can choose to pass them in idleness but perhaps not so great when consigned to the office. Tempers, it seem rise with the thermometer gage and staying cool is a hotly debated topic. Not least because no one can agree what a reasonable work temperature is. Take a look at this… The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 (SI 1992/3004) state that, during working hours, the temperature in all workplaces inside buildings should be reasonable. However, the Regulations do not provide a maximum workplace temperature. The Health and Safety Executive previously defined an acceptable zone of thermal comfort for most people in the UK as lying “roughly between 13°C (56°F) and 30°C (86°F), with acceptable temperatures for more strenuous work activities concentrated towards the bottom end of the range, and for more sedentary activities towards the higher end”. What is reasonable will depend on the nature of the workplace and the activities undertaken. [Comment: 30 degrees – phew, I don’t think so!]

Darlington Culture Volunteers I’m Heather Carter and with Glenda Lynn we are Volunteer Co-ordinators for Darlington Culture Volunteers. Building on the Darlington for Culture service we became Darlington Culture Volunteers in 2017. This is a collaboration with Darlington Hippodrome which has brought us a significant amount of additional support. We support organisations who are members of Darlington for Culture. We still support events we have helped over several years but now do more within the Theatre. This includes Welcome Hosts, public tours and archiving. See us in the Foyer with the Volunteer Information Stand, where as well as Theatre news, we display information on activities across the town. What I like the most is meeting all the lovely people who give their time, abilities, skills, experience and enthusiasm freely, with the aim of benefiting others in their community, whether they have a lot of time to give or just a little. They are so enthusiastic and accommodating it’s just brilliant. We have sixty five volunteers ranging from 16 to over 80 years from all walks of life. This is an optimum number as we know them all personally and are able to offer appropriate support and information, as well as sourcing a range of volunteering opportunities for them. Our vision is to be a hub for cultural volunteering and our

20

mission is to build a community of people, who through volunteering, have a vested interest in the future of the arts. Most of what we do is public facing by supporting and engaging with people attending events, whether that is getting children to join in workshops, helping serve refreshments, taking tickets, giving directions or staffing the Darlington for Culture Information Stand, which no doubt you will have seen at the Carnival, Tea Dance or the Head of Steam? Volunteers have been known to appear in a show or two as well. Remember Brassed Off, the Tale of Two Cities and coming soon Rumpelstiltskin. Yes we were there! We have a ‘Volunteer Thank You and Celebration Event’ early in September at The Hullabaloo. Volunteers will get the chance to meet event organisers and to find out about different aspects of volunteering they might not have tried. Our very talented volunteers will be entertaining us by singing, dancing and reading and we finish the event with a picture show, so no doubt there will be lots of laughter. Check us out on darlingtonculturevolunteers.co.uk

Discover a world of R&B that far transcends Usher and R Kelly... There’s a certain genre of popular music that gets described on the charts these days as ‘R&B’, but which used to be known as rhythm and blues – and if you’re after a soulful slice of ‘proper’ R&B on the seemingly unlikely backdrop of Darlington town centre, there’s only one event to be at this September. That’s right: it’s time, once again, for the Darlington Rhythm & Blues Festival. Now, when we say ‘rhythm and blues’, we aren’t talking Beyonce and Drake. We’re talking, instead, about a slice of the ‘proper’ stuff, from musicians across the UK grassroots scene who are really appreciated by the ardent aficionados. We also mean more than a few slices, in fact, as the entire extravaganza – encompassing pre-festival fringe events as well as the festival itself on the final day – runs from 7pm on Friday 14th September, right through to (pretty much) last thing on Sunday the 16th. But wait – Darlington’s hardly a rhythm and blues epicentre, is it? Well, you might have thought so. What with Darlington being far from a Philadelphia or Detroit, you might’ve wondered where an entire festival’s worth of such soulful goodness comes from. Well, there are actually many more R&B enthusiasts in the town than you might think, the festival being organised by the now-legendary Darlington RnB Club. We say ‘now-legendary’, because back in 1995 when it was formed, there wasn’t much of a rhythm and blues scene worthy of the name in the town. The club was the product of a group of enthusiasts who, feeling starved by a lack of R&B music in Darlington, decided to take matters into their own hands. 22

Today, the club consists of a hardcore clientele of about 50 to 70 rhythm and blues followers who attend most gigs, together with various other ‘floating’ patrons who’re a little more choosy about the bands that they go and see. If there’s one event that can be depended on to consistently bring them all together every year, though, it’s the Rhythm & Blues Festival. So, what can we expect from this year’s festival? The 2018 running of the festival is being organised by the club in conjunction with Darlington Borough Council and Gasto Productions, and will take place across a number of venues in the town, including the Market Square, The Pennyweight and The Quakerhouse, to name just a few. Headlining the main stage on Sunday will be Frankie Miller’s Fullhouse, with other acts set to perform including Nine Below Zero, Connie Lush Band and Midnite Johnny Band. Meanwhile, such acts as the Emma Wilson Blues Band, Soul Addiction, Oil City Shakers, Kindred Spirit and Trevor Sewell will star across the fringe programme at the likes of the Dolphin Centre, the Hole in the Wall Market Tavern & Kitchen in the Market Square and Voodoo Cafe on Skinnergate. It’s all completely free to attend and experience, absolutely family-friendly and promises to be one of the festivals to be at in the North East this autumn. To find out more, simply head to the Darlington RnB Club’s website at www.darlington-r-n-b-club.co.uk, call 01325 363 135 or email gasto.promotions@gmail.com.

Easy to take your scooter for a ride BRITAIN is Europe’s mobility scooter capital, with more than 350,000 in daily use on our pavements. But these helpful, nifty vehicles do their limitations. A scooter battery will typically take you about 12 miles, so you can’t stray too far in one journey. And with mobility scooters weighing from 50kg to 200kg, moving a heavier model into a car boot might risk a back injury. However, a lift on the back of the car makes it easy to transport the scooter around without struggle or risk. It means that you can revisit favourite places, go shopping more often or see family whenever you feel like it , without strain.

and with good ground clearance. The lift is very simple to operate and means that there is no longer any need to dismantle the scooter to fit it into the boot. It’s alsovery stable, so you will hardly know it is there, even on rough roads. And it is slim, lightwight and easy to remove and store. Having a lift fitted opens up so many new opportunities to use your scooter without fear of injuring your back.

The lift is mounted on the back of the car by means of a tow bar hitch. It has a triangular ‘male’ fitting that interlocks with a ‘female’ docking bracket attached permanently to the scooter into position, press a button and the two will lock together, so that the scooter can be lifted up behind the car, effortlessly

Quakers Zone

Our monthly report on Darlington 1883 from Ray Simpson, Communications and Media Manager

Darlington Football Club have launched a new FlexiTicket to attract fans to matches. Quakers have introduced the brand new Quaker FlexiTicket which allows fans who can’t commit to a full season ticket, the opportunity to make a saving against the on-the-day price by booking a block of tickets for the forthcoming home league games this season. Tickets can be purchased in blocks of 5 for a 5% discount, or 10 with a 10% discount off the usual advance online ticket price and even more when compared to the on the gate price. For example, the gate price for standing tickets for five matches is £70, fans can buy a FlexiTicket for £61, a saving of £9! Multiple Tickets can be combined; for instance you could buy a 5 and a 10 game ticket in order to get 15 games. Bearing in mind as well that accompanied Under 11s are admitted free to Darlington matches, then a family of three can attend a

32

Darlington match for less than £13. Details are available from Quaker Retail in the Dolphin Centre, or online. The club is also on target for record sales of its replica shirts. Last season, nearly 1,500 shirts were sold to fans, and already this season over 600 have been sold. Meanwhile, the team has played some great football in the early part of the season, the best probably coming in a 1-1 draw with Blyth Spartans at Blackwell Meadows in front of nearly 1700 fans. Quakers created a multitude of chances, had two goals two disallowed, hit the woodwork twice and had several more saved by the visiting keeper!

Courgette gratin This simple gratin makes a great side dish as it’s creamy and flavoursome without being too rich. Serve with a salad for a light supper.

Ingredients. 2 tbsp olive oil 800g/1lb 12oz courgettes, sliced into 5mm/¼in rounds few sprigs thyme few basil leaves 100ml/3½fl oz crème fraîche 50ml/2fl oz milk 1 tsp plain flour 75g/2½oz gruyère or similar cheese, grated salt and freshly ground black pepper

Method. • Preheat the oven to 200C/Fan 180C/ Gas 6

in a bowl and season with salt. Pour this mixture over the courgettes – it will not be enough to completely cover the courgettes, but this is fine – it will bubble up when cooking.

• Put the olive oil in a large, lidded frying pan. Add the courgettes and herbs and season with salt and pepper. • Cover and cook gently for 10 minutes, stirring every so often, until the courgettes have softened slightly but are still al dente. The oil should have taken on a deep, rich green colour from the courgettes.

• Sprinkle over the cheese. Bake in the oven for around 25 minutes, or until brown and bubbling.

recipe by

• Transfer to an oven dish. Whisk the crème fraîche, milk and flour together

Don’t miss the Last Train Home Festival in Darlington this September! September is a month of transition between the warm sunshine of summer into the cool darker evenings of autumn. While there isn’t an official event or festival that marks the handover between the two, Darlington has the next best thing on Saturday 22nd September, with the Last Train Home Festival.

McKay, Jister, Endem, Ronald Raygun, The Salvadors, The Dead Seat, Eve Conway, Sticky Pearls, Sonder Minds, James Gray Robson, Shakk, Rex Regis, Peg Powler, Petals and Salsola.Yet more acts are set to be announced soon.

The multi-venue music and comedy festival pulls into town for nine hours of fun and frivolity, and advance discount tickets are on sale now from www.skiddle.com.

Comedy fans are also in for a treat, with a stage curated by the Hilarity Bites Comedy Club.

What can you expect at the event? The spaces and venues around Darlington Banktop railway station will be the focus of the festival, including The Hullabaloo, St. John’s Church & Legacy Skate Store. They will showcase the wide variety of local, regional and national touring talent, finishing just in time for you to ‘catch the Last Train Home’. The first names had already been announced for the music stages as Darlington Monthly went to press, and there is something for every taste, from acoustic and folk through to indie, rock and electro. Headlining are all-girl Manchester rockers PINS, fresh from supporting George Ezra and Jake Bugg at the Truck Festival earlier this year. They are joined by The Lovely Eggs and their psychedelic punk rock sound from Lancaster, and lots more including The Van Ts, Courtyards, The Howl & The Hum, The Mysterines, Tom Joshua, Samantha Durnan, Hayley 38

Or why not have a chuckle?

Headlining is mind-reading comedian Doug Segal, fresh from his award-winning performances at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. He’s ably supported by John Whale; Nicky Wilkinson; comedian and acclaimed author Eddy Brimson; Kiwi in exile Sully O’Sullivan; Cal Halbert, one half of the incredible Mimic Men who stole the show on Britain’s Got Talent earlier this year; Ruth E. Cockburn; Stephanie Laing and Steve Shanyaski. The minimum age for the event is 14, as some of the material is not entirely suitable for families and small children. “Really proud to be bringing artists of this calibre to Darlington” The Last Train Home Festival is organised by Tracks, the Darlington music collective, in association with Arts Council England and Creative Darlington. The festival could not go ahead without the sterling support work of the Hilarity Bites Comedy Club and NARC magazine.

Local group bring good food and good deeds to Darlington Do you ever wonder what happens to all of the food that supermarkets and businesses don’t sell? Or do you think how great it would be to put such food to good use, instead of just disposing of it? One Darlington community group thought exactly the same, and turned its thoughts into action to benefit hundreds of Darlington residents in need. Introducing Food for Thought Darlington The Food for Thought Darlington (FFTD) initiative was launched in December 2017 and to date has fed and supported more than 700 men, women and children in the town in just over eight months. A community group run entirely by volunteers, FFTD rescues surplus food from supermarkets and other local businesses that is destined for the dumpster, and instead cooks with it to provide delicious meals at pop-up cafes all across Darlington. It also provides clothing and other essentials to anyone who needs them, along with information and signposting services. The cafes are run on a not-for-profit, pay as you feel (PAYF) basis. PAYF removes any financial barrier to anybody attending an event. There is no fixed price and no expectation of payment for food or other services. The group values people first and encourages everyone to get involved in any way they can. FFTD held three pop-up cafes at the Darlington Community Fire Station during August, on the 3rd, 17th and 31st. Donations urged for vital initiative Louise Graham, FFTD Chair, said: “It’s a big problem when good food is removed from supermarket shelves when many people

42

struggle daily to put hot, nutritious meals on the table for their families.” “We intercept this food and aim to redistribute it to people instead and we also provide clothing, toiletries and other essentials. We do all of this on a not-for-profit, pay as you feel basis.” “Pay as you feel is a way of valuing people more than money, you can pay as much or as little as you want. Darlington supermarkets and other local firms donate over 90% of the food we cook but donations from the public are also welcomed.” “We welcome donations of tinned and dried food, household goods, quality clothing, shoes and offers for help as payment, you could even pledge to pass on a good deed to someone else in your community.” Ms Graham, who was recently interviewed by Neil and Amy on BBC Tees’ breakfast show, added: “Our aim is to build a strong sense of community, everyone is welcome. Our events are melting pots where we cook together, eat together, share our problems and find solutions together. “The cost of living is going up and austerity is really biting, everyone is feeling the pinch but there’s still plenty to go around and we need to pull together and not leave anyone behind.” Anyone who would like to donate food or other items is advised to email fftdarlo@gmail.com. You can also find out more about the great work that FFTD is doing in the town by joining its Facebook group at www.facebook.com/groups/ FFTDarlington.
