Welcome to the October edition of Darlington Monthly! October, eh? It’s one of those months that we sometimes see as drifting between the summer and Christmas, not offering much in terms of exciting events other than Halloween. But as you’ll see when you flick through the latest issue of your favourite free monthly community magazine, that certainly isn’t the case in Darlington!
8
The truth is that the town remains as lively as ever, hosting all manner of events as listed in our ‘What’s on’ section (page 46), while local artists are celebrating the decision to launch a new exhibition space in the Victorian Market Hall (page 42). But even if you aren’t likely to be ‘out and about’ much this month, don’t worry, as you can always just curl up on the sofa and enjoy the stimulating articles and features we have for you in this edition of Darlington Monthly. We’re especially proud this month to have an exclusive Q&A with the Darlington-born writer George Mann, so check it out on pages 24-25. Finally, we have to say a massive ‘thank you’ – once again – to all of our advertisers who continue to make Darlington Monthly such a great success every month. Remember that it’s not hard to join them and spread the word about your Darlington business among our readership! Just call us today on 07500 828 396 or email sales@darlingtonmonthly.co.uk, and we’ll tell you all about our great-value long-term plans. Alas, that’s it from us for another month. Have a flick through our latest issue and tell us what you like and dislike about it, and we’ll be back with yet more great content in November!

Three Darlington parks competing for the Green Flag People’s Choice Awards Darlington can take pride in having some of the UK’s best green spaces. That’s far from just our opinion! In July, three of the County Durham town’s green spaces – South Park, West Park and West Cemetery – received the prestigious accolade of a Green Flag Award. The Green Flag Award is nationally intended to recognise publicly accessible parks and green spaces on the basis of a range of criteria, including excellence in environmental standards, maintenance and visitor facilities. Now, all three of the Darlington winners are in the running for the Green Flag People’s Choice Awards, which will be awarded to what are deemed the country’s 10 best sites. It won’t be until Tuesday 16th October that the winners will be announced – but in the meantime, why not visit the three Darlington sites that have already been given Green Flag recognition this year? These spaces each have much to recommend them. South Park This park was first opened in 1853, when it was officially called Belassis Park. Today, South Park preserves much of its Victorian character and features a range of amenities, including a multi-use games area for use in playing sport and an aviary where parrots await a good chat! This Grade II-registered park also runs a year-long programme of events, of which especially notable highlights include Proms in the Park, Race for Life and the Macmillan Toddle. South Park first won a Green Flag Award in 2006, and we anticipate it winning many more over the coming years, whether or not it triumphs in the Green Flag People’s Choice Awards.
8
West Park Much more than just a park, West Park also happens to be a Local Nature Reserve that includes woodland, wetlands and wildflower meadows in its more than 30 hectares. In fact, the site has about 46,000 trees – nearly one for each of Darlington’s homes! In West Park, trees were planted as part of the creation of the park that eventually opened in 2005 as the town’s first new park in over a century. However, trees have been planted in such a way as to resemble natural woodland and accommodate winding paths and other features. West Park also flourishes with its wildlife. Many animals and insects, including birds, butterflies, frogs and bats, have adopted the site as their home. Watch out for the rare type of butterfly known as the Dingy Skipper and, on occasion at the pond, a kingfisher! West Cemetery Darlington has three cemeteries, of which West Cemetery is the largest. This cemetery dates from 1858 and is the resting place of many historical figures strongly associated with Darlington. Those figures include George Stephenson, the civil engineer and mechanical engineer whose efforts gave rise to the British railways in the early 19th century. Victorian novelist Charles Dickens’ brother, Frederick William Dickens, is also buried here. West Cemetery was first handed a Green Flag Award in 2013 and today includes monuments dating back to the Victorian period, making this cemetery a fascinating place for history buffs.

Reasons to “think local” and shop in Darlington In August, the department store group House of Fraser entered a company voluntary arrangement – putting the group’s Darlington store, which operates under the Binns name, under threat. This danger intensified after House of Fraser earmarked Binns as one of 31 stores it intended to close nationwide to trim costs. However, in August, the store was given a valuable reprieve... On Friday 10th August, House of Fraser entered administration before the Sports Direct chain, owned by billionaire businessman Mike Ashley, bought it for £90 million. This move saved about 6,000 jobs and led to confirmation that the Darlington store would remain open for at least another 12 to 18 months. A crucial achievement, but challenges still loom Stephen Harker, the leader of Darlington Borough Council, announced towards the end of August: “I am pleased to report that the council has been given confirmation from Sports Direct that the store will remain open for an initial period of 12-18 months.” He said that the council had secured this confirmation by working with the building’s owner. He called the news “a huge positive for Darlington town centre”, nonetheless adding that “high street retail is very challenging and we, the Darlington public, need to support all our retailers in order to maintain a vibrant retail offer in the town centre.” How we can act on the call to “think local” Harker also said: “I ask you all to ‘think local’ when making your purchases.” We could easily start by continuing to shop at the Binns store – which, with its elegant, art deco front, is easily recognisable in the shopping district. The
20
store’s handsome historic building was first built in the 1920s, while the Binns name dates from before House of Fraser bought the store in the 1950s. Indeed, after thanking Sports Direct and Mike Ashley for coming to the store’s rescue, Harker acknowledged that Binns “is not secured for ever yet.” He added: “Sports Direct will be working hard to ensure the Darlington store has a viable future, so I expect there will be changes to come, and the council will continue to work with Sports Direct to secure a long-term future for both the business and the building.” Darlington has valuable pockets of retail potential Nonetheless, we should probably stop short of deeming Binns a “silver bullet” that will singlehandedly save Darlington’s appeal as a retail hub. There is certainly evidence of green shoots elsewhere, such as just around the corner from Binns – or to be more specific, the area around Grange Road, where cafes, smart delis and upmarket hairdressers are in abundance. Furthermore, largely due to Darlington being close to the East Coast mainline of the national railway network, the town is affluent compared to many other parts of the Tees Valley. The town’s close proximity to the airport and A1 road have also helped to keep down unemployment – a sign that Darlington is capable of weathering its current storm in retail.

A Conversation with...
GEORGE MANN George Mann is a Sunday Times bestselling novelist and scriptwriter.
W
hat were your formative influences that led you to become an author?
I think it has to be the books and television shows I first encountered as a child. I was being read fantasy from an early age – The Magic Faraway Tree, The Chronicles of Narnia, The Hobbit. Then later I went on to read Susan Cooper, Alan Garner, HG Wells. I remember being particularly struck by the ending of The War of the Worlds. At 13 I read the complete Sherlock Holmes canon, and I think anyone who’s read my work will see the profound influence Doyle’s stories still assert on what I write. Doctor Who was a huge influence too, and things like The Borrowers, The Box of Delights and the Ray Harryhausen movies, along with later discoveries such as Hammer Horror,The Avengers, The Children of the Stones and films such as Night of the Demon. All of those have had a profound impact on my own work, too. How did your career as a novelist begin? I’ve always been a writer – ever since I was a child – but it was in my early 20s that I decided it was something I wanted to take seriously. I spent a few years trying to write an epic space opera, but I guess I was being too ambitious and still needed to learn my craft, and I kept losing enthusiasm for it. It was only when a friend encouraged me to write something for me – a story to remind myself why I loved writing – that I began work on The Affinity Bridge. That same friend – then a buyer in Waterstones – passed the working draft of the book onto an editor he knew – and that was it – the editor made an offer and the deal was done. How do you feel your northern roots, particularly in Darlington, have shaped your writing? I think growing up in the North taught me a great deal about work ethic. I was surrounded by people who’d get up every morning and go and slog their guts out in a factory, and come home tired on an evening, and yet, for the most part, remained cheerful and upbeat. That was always inspiring to me, and I like to think I’ve applied a similar work ethic to my writing, too – I’m grateful that I’m able to do something I love every day, and never want to forget that. Darlington, too, still felt like a Victorian town when I was growing up, at least in terms of the architecture and the design. As a young child we lived in a Victorian terraced house which forms the basis for Sir Maurice Newbury’s house in the Newbury & Hobbes books.
24
You have become identified with the ‘steampunk’ genre, through your Newbury & Hobbes novels and stories. How do you feel about that association? I feel very lucky! I mean, I’m not sure what I write is actually steampunk, in that there’s not much ‘punk’ in it. I tend to think of it as Victorian fantasy. But I feel honoured to have been adopted by the steampunk movement, and steampunk fans are always so supportive. I love attending steampunk events and meeting folk. How did your involvement with Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Who come about? As mentioned above, I’ve been a Sherlock Holmes fan for many years, and it seemed like a natural fit to write for Doyle’s characters. That was the motive, and the opportunity came when my publisher, Titan Books, launched a range of original Sherlock Holmes novels. I basically didn’t give them any choice. I launched in and ended up writing two novels for the series, along with editing a handful of short story anthologies, too. Doctor Who has been a longer association, and I think my first published Doctor Who fiction was a short story for an anthology published by Big Finish a good few years ago. It was on the back of my Newbury & Hobbes books, though, that I was offered the chance to write my first Doctor Who novel, when the editor got in touch, having read The Affinity Bridge, and saw Doctor Who was clearly one of my influences. Since then, I’ve gone on to write a good number of Doctor Who stories, as books, audio plays and comics. It’s always fun. What do you feel are the similarities or differences between writing for such franchises and how you have approached such other works of yours as the Newbury & Hobbes series? It all comes down to character and story, really. Whenever you set out to create a new story, whether it’s with original characters or existing ones, you’re always trying to do your best work. I’ve never believed that I could do a good job if I felt cynical about a franchise, so I’ve always tried to accept writing jobs on other franchises (such as Doctor Who, Blake’s 7, Warhammer etc) if I’m already a fan of the worlds and characters and feel I have something worthwhile to say. When you’re creating your own worlds, such as the alternate history of Newbury & Hobbes, you have a certain freedom, but writing a story with existing characters can be just as rewarding,

and often the necessary constraints (the need to remain true to the tone and character of the show, for example) can be catalysts for new invention. You are also a former editor of Outland magazine; how did this inform your writing? It was a review magazine for the book chain I worked for at the time, so it awarded me the opportunity to steep myself in the SF/Fantasy genre, and to read lots of wonderful books by some amazing authors. I think that was the key thing, really. I see reading as a key part of an author’s job – so having the opportunity at such a young age to be able to read so deeply and widely in the genre I ended up working in provided me with an excellent schooling – and one that still continues to this day. What are the best and worst things that you have ever read in reviews of your work? Oh, I try not to read the reviews, good or bad. I’ve had the whole spectrum in my time, from glowing reviews to outright hate mail. I think the truth is always somewhere in the middle, and I long ago came to terms with the fact that my writing isn’t for everybody, and nor should it be – if you write to please or appease, you’re not being true to yourself. So I try to focus on telling the next story to the best of my ability, and work with editors I trust and who won’t pull their punches!
What advice would you give to aspiring writers growing up in Darlington or the North East today? Write every day, even if it’s just a few words. Make it a habit. Always carry a notebook or have a saved file on your phone. Writing a novel can be an endurance test – a bit like climbing a mountain – but if you keep chipping away, day after day, you’ll be amazed how quickly it all adds up. You can go back and edit it all afterwards – the key is to keep on climbing towards the summit. The other thing I’d say to people in the North East is that although publishing sometimes appears to be terribly Londoncentric, it’s important to remember that your voice matters too. So keep at it! What projects are you working on right now? I’m currently working on a new Newbury & Hobbes story, and I have a new novel in my Wychwood series (modern day supernatural crime) coming out in just a couple of weeks. How do you expect your career to continue to evolve over the next five years or so? I’d like to think I’ll still be writing in five years! I think next year will provide me the opportunity to look at doing something new, although I’m never that far away from more Newbury & Hobbes. I have a hankering to write a new crime novel, but also to do something a bit more fantastical, too. We’ll have to see!

POETRY CORNER Talking!
Do you talk? As a Family? About your innermost thoughts? Do you discuss in Depth, your Reservations; know the ‘Foibles’ that create ‘Retorts’? A sharp attack in response to a Question can stop conversation in its track; Some remarks create a Barrier from which there appears: No Turning Back. I suspect We All Harbour critical issues, that could Halt Relationship; A common retort in an Argument is that ‘the other’ should ‘Get a Grip’! In truth we look to Defend Ourselves; Our Position; Our Point of View; To each it doesn’t matter Who is Right: It might be Them or You! Conversation is vital to Avoid a ‘Bloody’ War that Divides All Sides; For some reason a Pointless issue is: The Hurt to a Person’s ‘Prides’. How strange for instance that ‘Religions’ separate people, who then cause ‘Wars’; It becomes a matter of Great Importance that a Parcel of Land Is Yours!! Yet none have a Right to any part of this World for ‘They’ are not Here to Stay; Nature will Recover and Destroy ALL that Humans do; once We Have Gone Way. So: Getting Back to Family: Why Not Discuss Your Issues in Peace; We All have a Strong Opinion: Talk: Agree to Differ; letting Anger Quietly Release!! We fret about the Little Things in Comparison to Changes that Surround; Global Warming; Decline of Bees; Plastic Poisoning of Fish: They are the Problems that Abound! Graeme C. © gch 2018

AN INNOVATIVE glass retailer has opened a new showroom in Northallerton. Rishi Sunak MP performed the opening honours for Northallerton Glass at its refurbished premises in Anchorage Lane. The enterprise was established more than 30 years ago as L&B Safety Glass but since 2012 has traded under its current name with Liam Spencer at the helm. The new showroom has been created in a former motor spares/ repairs business and its centrepiece is an “infinity drop” walk-on glass void where clever use of safety glass, mirrors and lights creates the optical illusion of a bottomless pit. Mr Sunak said: “It is good to see a family enterprise grow and develop its business in such an exciting way. Liam and his team are bringing some of the latest glass products to the market and I am sure the
new showroom will help showcase these to their retail and commercial customers.” During his visit, Mr Sunak met members of Mr Spencer’s family and some of the seven employees. He also got the chance to try cutting glass in the company’s workshop. The company supplies glass and mirrors for traditional uses such as in windows but also for a wide variety of applications – from kitchen splashbacks to made-to-measure table tops and shelves. Mr Spencer sits on the management committee of the Chopsticks charity in Northallerton which provides work for people with a range of learning disabilities. The open day raised money for the charity’s development appeal.

Heritage Healthcare tee off for St Teresa’s Hospice
Charitable golfers were in full swing as they teed off for an annual hospice fundraiser. Twenty three teams from across the North of England took to the fairways and greens at Blackwell Golf Club, Darlington, for the 17th Heritage Healthcare golf day raising around £12,000 for St Teresa’s Hospice.
is our third charity golf day with Heritage Healthcare and the second time that we have taken the overall trophy.
The event, which has to date raised in excess of £220,000, assists the hospice in providing free care and support for residents of Darlington, South West Durham and NorthYorkshire who are affected by life-limiting illness.
“Last year we finished in third place so it’s nice to be back on top again. The whole day is so well organised and is in aid of such a great cause that we will definitely be back next year to defend our title.”
Director of Heritage Healthcare and honorary member of the Darlington and District Hospice Movement Sally Pickersgill said: “Once again we have had a fantastic day with teams travelling from as far as Leeds, Newcastle and Sunderland to take part.
Chief executive of St Teresa’s Hospice Jane Bradshaw added: “Heritage Healthcare have been incredible supporters of our hospice for over 16 years.
“The golf day brings together incredible support from individuals and local businesses who not only enter the competition but who also provide prizes for the winners, raffle and our charity auction. “St Teresa’s does incredible work and is such an important part of our community so it’s wonderful to see teams returning year on year to help us to continue our fundraising efforts.” Winners of the event were Middlesbrough-based Advanced Vehicle Leasing who accumulated 103 points across the 18hole course. Managing director Stuart Beagrie, who was joined by team members Eddie Hides, Kris York and David Gray, said: “This

“In that time we have gone from having no inpatient unit and no complementary therapy and counselling facilities to having a fantastic purpose-built in-patient unit which has seen over 200 patient admissions since it opened two years ago. It also offers a full service of complimentary, feel-good and counselling therapies, an innovative rapid response nursing team which responds to patients in their homes within one hour of a call and within the last week we have become the first hospice in the region, and one of the first in the whole country, to be added to the national 999/111 Directory of Services. “None of this would be possible without amazing people like Sally and her husband Glenn hosting events like this and the incredible people that come along to support them. It makes me so proud that we can do justice to all of their efforts in the work that we do at St Teresa’s.”

Why we need to relax more. As a Clinical Hypnotherapist I see many people suffering with stress related symptoms amongst many other issues. Often the stress has led to other conditions such as anxiety, insomnia and depression. It’s no secret that left out of control, stress can manifest itself through physical ailments. Commonly people who develop colds, viruses and skin conditions such as spots, cold sores or rashes are told by friends that they ‘must be run down’. This is absolutely right of course, but do you know why? Did you also know that stress, if prolonged and left unmanaged can also contribute to more serious conditions such as poor mental health, PTSD, eating disorders, addictions, circulatory problems, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, diabetes, heart conditions and even cancer? However, not all stress is bad for us. Stress is a physical response which alerts us to potential danger. In primitive man, this response would be useful for instance when coming across an animal which may like him for dinner! For us today it is more likely to warn us from walking into traffic or stepping off a cliff. When a potential life threatening situation occurs, the subconscious brain triggers a series of chemical reactions which stimulates a physical response in the body. Typically, hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline are produced. Heart rate is increased and blood flow to vital organs increases whilst blood flow to non essential systems slows down. This ‘flight, fight or freeze’ response prepares the body for action in order to survive. In doing so, bodily functions such as the digestive system shuts down. The body is in survival mode and conscious brain function is limited. This is why when you are very stressed you can’t think straight or ‘see the wood for the trees’. The immune system also shuts down, leaving you vulnerable to infection. Breathing is faster, your pulse rate increases and muscles tense. In the short term, the body is able to recover from the effects of stress on the physical body. However, prolonged periods of stress can be very problematic. There are three different types of stress. Acute Stress is short term and is in response to an event, either a positive event such as having a baby, getting married
or an unhappy event, maybe divorce or a frightening incident. This type of stress is normal and is not considered harmful unless continued episodes keep occurring. Episodic Acute Stress may develop when a person has too many commitments, balancing too many lates in the air or constantly worrying about things. This type of stress can develop into more serious issues if not checked. Chronic Stress occurs where the situation is ongoing and the person cannot see a way out. Examples of this could be dysfunctional relationships, financial worries, illness or a traumatic experience in early life, including neglect or abuse. There are many many triggers for stress in our modern day society and there are as many different reactions and behaviours. Stress is also not limited to adults. Our children and teens are faced with a wealth of pressure and stress in comparison to previous generations. Most of us understand the need to take care of our bodies, but do we really take the time to care for our emotional well-being? The mind and the body are one and part of the same system, intrinsically liked, therefore learning to calm the mind has a relaxing effect on the body physically. In turn, this can help us to manage symptoms of stress. In addition to working with clients on an individual basis addressing issues through Hypnotherapy, I have designed a six week relaxation program to promote a feeling of calmness and overall well-being. The program will teach general techniques to manage stress, ease anxiety and quieten the mind. Classes start on 1st October 2018 and will be held each Monday from 6.30-7.30pm for six weeks. Spaces are limited therefore early booking is recommended. Classes are £10.00 each, however payment for the six weeks is required in advance to secure the place. To book or to discuss booking a Hypnotherapy consultation, call or text Jacqueline on 07857727872 or alternatively email on Jacqueline.carson3@icloud.com. The House with the Clocks in its Walls This is a spine tingling tale that’s perfect for Halloween so we were a little surprised to see it earlier in the UK.
only rule is he is not to open the scary-looking cabinet on the main floor, so you’ll never guess what happens next…
It’s the magical tale of a 10 year old boy called Lewis (Owen Vaccaro) who goes to live with his mysterious uncle (Jack Black) in a creaky old house with a mysterious tick-tocking heart. Everything looks normal and welcoming in the sleepy town at first but this façade burst into pieces with a secret hidden world of witches and warlocks when Lewis accidentally awakens the dead.
The film is set in 1955 and the period detail is amazing. Eventually Lewis finds out what is happening and persuades his Uncle to teach him some spells and incantations. The sinister clock keeps ticking away and Lewis starts to see the ghost of his departed mother but these moments are more gentle scares than full on BOO! Jump scares.
Directed by Eli Roth who is better known for more adult horror movies such as Cabin Fever and Hostel, he expectedly tones down the gore but not the suspense in his first PG rated movie. Lewis’s Uncle Jonathan is revealed as a Warlock with good intentions but average powers. His next door neighbor Florence (Cate Blanchett) spends so much time at the house they are forced to deny they are more than good friends – although the more alarming revelation should be that she’s actually a witch.
There are enough unnerving moments in the movie to call it a comedy thriller and enough moments of actual drama and character development for adults to enjoy the movie and be invested in the characters. There are some scary moments when sensitive children should look away but ultimately bad guys get their comeuppance, good guys get their reward and if you are a fan of the early Harry Potter movies then you will absolutely love this. There aren’t many kid friendly movies to introduce them to the concept of horror and danger but The House With a Clock in its Walls is the perfect bridge between them too, balancing the peril with fun.
Uncle Jonathan let’s Lewis have the run of the house, can eat cookies for dinner and go to bed when he likes. The We are offering a family ticket for any film at Vue Darlington at Feethams

Darlington Market to be graced with new exhibition space The latest development in the ongoing improvement of Darlington’s indoor market will be the installation of a new exhibition space to enable artists, colleges, schools, local groups and art societies to show their works. A small arts grant from Darlington for Culture (DfC) has enabled 12 exhibition boards to be purchased for the Victorian Market Hall’s events space. How has the new space been made possible? A DfC spokesperson commented: “The DfC Small Grants Scheme has supported a variety of projects since it began in May 2017 and we’re pleased to help support this new exhibition space. “The display boards will provide an extra opportunity for artists to exhibit their work and will add an extra dimension to the town centre for visitors and shoppers to enjoy.” What kind of shows can we expect in the space? Darlington Market hopes that exhibitions in the space will embrace such themes as the heritage of the town centre, local artists and people, the railways and current and topical subjects. The market is welcoming ideas and submissions from artists and groups with an interest in exhibiting their projects in the space. The latest information can be found at the official Darlington Market Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ Darlingtonmarketofficial. High hopes of many successful exhibitions to come Manager of Creative Darlington, Stephen Wiper, stated: “There are so many talented individuals and groups creating original and exciting exhibitions in Darlington and a real appetite for chances to share and enjoy great art, craft and creative practice around the town.

“We’re delighted that a new exhibition facility is being developed within Darlington Market and to see a new space to enjoy work emerge within the town centre.” It’s easier than you think to get involved Those who would like to participate in any of the creative opportunities presented by Darlington Market are encouraged to attend the free monthly creative network meetings that enable artists to meet likeminded people and discuss inspiring ideas with each other. The next of these networking events takes place from 11am on Tuesday 9th October in the Indoor Market Hall, and artists are urged to bring an example of their work to share with others in attendance, to enable everyone to appreciate the diverse range of pieces produced by creative people in the locality. The networking events take place on a once-monthly basis, and upcoming dates are listed on the aforementioned Facebook page and on the indoor market notice boards. Just the latest chapter of a bright future for Darlington Covered Market Darlington Covered Market may date back to Victorian times, but it is embracing the future with confidence. The building will benefit from a multi-million-pound investment that will make it a truly 21st-century retail destination, while remaining sympathetic to its 19th-century heritage. The launch of the new exhibition space is simply the next step in the continuing rejuvenation of the market into an exciting and cosmopolitan meeting point for Darlo residents. Here at Darlington Monthly, we certainly can’t wait to see what great art is displayed there in the months and years ahead!

Employment Round Up I’m often asked by managers if they have to wait the stipulated period of probation if the new starter proves unsatisfactory, and the answer I give them is no, not necessarily. Circumstances alter cases of course and must be weighed up before any dismissal decision is made, but an employee can be dismissed during the probationary period. It is common for employers to stipulate a probationary period for new employees, particularly those at junior or mid level, and periods of three or six months’ probation are the most common. However, a probationary period has virtually no effect on the employer-employee relationship. The purpose of the probationary period is simply to enable the employer to monitor and appraise the probationer in the initial stages of his or her employment to ensure that the required standards of performance and conduct are being reached. It’s a two way thing remember – the employee may decide you’re not for them! The employer should ensure that it follows any applicable contractual disciplinary procedure, prior to the dismissal. They must also give the required period of contractual or statutory notice whichever is the greater.
