Welcome to the September edition of Darlington Monthly! Where has this year gone? It’s astonishing to think that autumn will be here soon, with all of its lovely red and brown leaves on the trees. Another great thing about the milder weather at this time of year is that it gives you a decent opportunity to spend more time indoors reading your copy of Darlington Monthly! After all, we’ve got yet more great content for you this month, including a review of one of the late summer’s top films – The Hitman’s Bodyguard – and our Places To Go feature, which this month covers Haltwhistle. It’s been claimed to be the ‘centre of Britain’ and is well-located for a nice run out for Darlington residents. Then, there are all of our fabulous advertisers who we have to salute for being so supportive of us once again. If you fancy having Sunday lunch made for you, for instance, The Croft Hotel is offering a range of one, two or three courses – I can almost taste the Yorkshire puddings from here – while if you are in need of a new roof or repairs to your existing roof, look no further than Findley Roofing & Building, who are a great team of hugely professional and experienced guys. Oh, and don’t forget that we also have two great competitions for you this month – you could win a family ticket to a film of your choice at Vue Cinema, Darlington or a Sunday lunch for two people at The Croft Hotel. If you’re interested in advertising your business in our local magazine, please give us a call on 07500 828 396 or email sales@darlingtonmonthly. co.uk.We have a range of advertiser packages available, with big discounts for three and six-month plans. Happy reading, and see you again in October!

Employment Round Up Did you know that employees aged between 18 -29 are twice as likely to experience mental health problems than their more mature work colleagues? Younger workers in part time roles are also more likely to classify their mental health as poor or very poor. The rise of the gig economy may be seen as liberation for some, but the lack of certainty regarding hours and pay is most definitely a contributory factor for stress and anxiety. Employers need to be more attentive to the well-being of their staff and watch out for those tell signs that may suggest personal or finance issues are undermining performance. It’s a tricky one though given the sensitivity of subject matter, but what’s to stop a company offering ad hoc workshops for staff on debt and how to manage it for example? Probably of far more use than wasting thousands on a team build that many view with horror. It’s also free to enter, unless you factor in charges for car parking. Also, four gothic ruins – called the Gothic Ruin, the Temple of Minerva, the Bono Retiro and the Gothic Seat – have been rebuilt and restored. The Heritage Lottery Fund granted £4.1m for the whole project – and money has definitely been well-spent since 1999, when that project began. However, the history of the Grade II listed site can be traced much further back – to the 18th century, in fact, when John Burdon decided to convert Hardwick Estate into pleasure grounds. The Hitman’s Bodyguard Do you ever miss that ‘80s and ‘90s Hollywood staple, the buddy action comedy? You know what we mean. We’re talking about that for-so-long relentlessly entertaining, but perhaps eventually over-familiar trope of the ridiculously mismatched duo – one sometimes white, the other black, and one sometimes a cop, the other not, and one often a follower of the rules, the other a maverick – who are forced to come together to solve a crime. Along the way, their bond is tested, and perhaps forged, by all manner of travails. The results, we were so often told, were hilarious. Sometimes, they very much were. The genre has produced no shortage of classics, from Men in Black and Dumb and Dumber to 48 Hrs and Midnight Run, but if sufficient time has passed without buddy action comedies being ubiquitous on our screens for us to welcome their return, The Hitman’s Bodyguard may not be the best vehicle to ramp up the heart-warming nostalgia.

Heritage Open Days - try Haltwhistle
Heritage open days (7-10 sept 2017) is a national movement to open the doors to a wide variety of heritage buildings. At the time of writing, the regular booklets and websites that confirm which places are open to public view were not available, but the tyne valley community rail partnership have suggested to me that we should promote haltwhistle, which has at least one site participating in the scheme. The tyne valley community rail partnership is opening the old booking hall on haltwhistle railway station on friday and saturday of that weekend (8th and 9th). There may even be a small pop up craft fair in the old booking hall during those two days. This building was built in 1855 and retains its wooden ‘booking office wall’ complete with ticket racks which will be filled with reproduction edmondson tickets. Edmondson tickets were the standard ticket of the railways in britain almost from their inception until the advent of the early computerised ticket machines in the 1970s. The system was invented by thomas edmondson who was stationmaster at brampton station, west of haltwhistle, on the newcastle to carlisle line. Chester-le-track also has a connection with the haltwhistle old booking hall, since there were plans years ago for tynedale district council to open up the office for ticket sales. The unsigned draft contract was presented to me in 1999 as a basis for negotiation with the then railway operator, northern spirit. It’s the grounding for our trading today at both chester-le-street and eaglescliffe. This interesting northumberland town claims to be the centre of britain, as the signpost shows. I think this debate has now been settled but they like to be challenged
16
about their centrality because then they can roll out the maps which prove haltwhistle is in the middle of england, scotland and wales. There will be informal railway walks running during the two days, looking at alston arches and other remains of the alston branch line, which closed in 1976. Haltwhistle water tower is still in existence and it is hoped that this too will be open for visitors to see. Bringing the railway offer bang up to date, the virgin azuma roadshow will be pulling into town too! That’s a van, not the actual new trains which have been built at newton aycliffe, and can now be seen testing on the east coast main line. Being in the area of the border reivers, when attacks on the town were common before the union of crowns in 1603, and even thereafter, the greatest number of bastles (defensible houses) on the english side of the border are here. The trail to find them is detailed in the “turbulent past” leaflet. Take a walk too up the haltwhistle burn, once the industrial hub of the town. The parish church, holy cross, is 13th century, with roman stones and much more. It houses an old water stoup which may have been used as a font. Children of all ages will enjoy mr george’s time museum in the main street (free, donations welcome) I am informed that there are some great places to eat in the town, and if early september is still warm and sunny, the three outdoor pools of the haltwhistle open air swimming pool are particularly invigorating. Cheap day returns are available to haltwhistle, but there are no northern rail advance purchase tickets as yet. Remember you can break your journey as often as you like to visit other towns on the way.

What’s on TV This Month Hunted, Channel 4 The third season of Hunted is coming back to our screens this Autumn. While the exact release date is yet to be announced, the previous two seasons aired in September of 2015 and 2016, so if the pattern continues, we can expect to see it this month. Each season follows members of the public trying to evade capture by a team of retired police, intelligence service officers, analysts, cyber security experts and counterterrorism officers. POETRY CORNER WILD LIFE
We live a lot with wildlife, it is never very far; From a Spider in your bath tub, to a Bee that flies into your car. The former can be frightening, the latter, most unsafe; Or, feel something weird crawl up your leg is more uncomfortable than ‘a chafe’! Yet everything has got it’s place in the Evolution of Life; If we continue to endanger the Humble Bee, it’s absence would cause great strife. What other relentless worker is dedicated to Pollinating our World; It is time to stop using Chemicals on the Land, lest imminent disaster is unfurled. One tiny little Insect will feed a soaring Bird; Both winged; more agile than human, one with sweet song you have often heard. The Spring, The Summer, Autumn and Winter too; Most survive outside, so much better than You. Next time you see a Fly, a Spider, a millipede or a Mouse; Don’t Kill it for it has equal right to Life, just gently remove it From your House!!

Quakers Zone
Our monthly report on Darlington 1883 from Ray Simpson, Communications and Media Manager
Darlington FC have successfully relaunched their Football in the Community Initiative!
When the club was in the Football League, it ran a very successful scheme that involved coaches from the club going into local schools and coaching youngsters of various ages and skill levels. Not only did they help publicise the club, they also helped youngsters to improve their socials skills and their confidence.
For those fans who followed the club in the nineties, there was a real blood and thunder game at York City which prompted the older fans to recall some tasty games in the old Fourth Division. Quakers drew the game 0-0, and many fans thought that this was one of the best goalless draws for a long time -- usually goalless draws are boring, dull affairs!
The club now provides a matchday experience, which includes an hour’s coaching, a free meal, a chance to meet the players, take penalties at half time, and sit in the manager’s seat in the dugout. The cost is £30, and is great value for money. Details are available from lead coach, Deano Browne, on fitc@ darlingtonfc.org.
The club is also offering hospitality and sponsorship packages at Blackwell Meadows. You can sponsor a Darlington match, the matchball, or join your friends and clients in the hospitality lounge. Details are available from hospitality@darlingtonfc.org.
Quakers have made a promising start to the new season in the Vanarama National League North. They played some great football in two thrilling home matches against Gainsborough and Alfreton which they won by 4-3 and 4-1 respectively, and they firmly believe that they can figure in a promotion challenge.
The youngsters on DFC's Matchday Experience meet the Darlington team

Darlington Mechanics’ Institute was founded in 1825 to give recreation and education to mechanics (which used to mean anyone who worked with their hands). In 1851, £750 had been raised for a building fund and the foundation stone was laid by Elizabeth Pease who was influential in the Institute’s new building, which was opened in 1854 and is still in Skinnergate; now known as “The Keys”.
The mechanics institute in Bondgate Darlington is a small private members club. We have a games room (two-snooker tables) and a reading room. Light refreshments are available to its members. Limited new membership is available now.
To arrange a visit contact Bob on 07580 919567
It had the first library in the town and it used to have a theatre as well – that must have been one of the first in the town. In August 2013 the organization moved to its new premises in Bondgate where it now resides. It comprises a games room with two full size snooker tables and a reading room where members can socialize. The almost 200 year history of the Institute is preserved on the walls with photographs and memorabilia for members to peruse.
