Welcome to the latest issue of Darlington Monthly! With new ownership comes new opportunities. While Angela is still very much a part of the Darlington Monthly team, we now have a dedicated team of designers, writers and social media experts to ensure the wonderful work Angela has put in over the past five years will not go to waste and with the extra hands, we hope to continue to grow the magazine to become an even bigger part of the local community – something we’re very passionate about. We’re working on some big changes for the magazine as we progress with our long-term vision of helping as many small business owners as possible in the local area. One change that I’m very proud of is our online presence; we’re revamping our website and social media strategy and, as our advertisers will already know, you see a lot of time and effort and hopefully benefit from what we’re doing on social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter. However, this will be taken even further and I expect this to become the industry norm for local magazines before long. In fact, what we’re doing for our advertisers, for no extra cost, is a social media service that is worth at least £250 per month (we’re in the same office as our sister company Jak HQ, a creative agency that offers this service). If you’re interested in advertising your business in our local magazine, please give us a call on 07500 828396 or email sales@ darlingtonmonthly.co.uk. We have a range of advertiser packages available, with big discounts for three and six-month plans. As always, a huge thanks to our loyal and new readers for all of your support. Enjoy your August and see you next month!

What’s on TV This Month Ray Donovan, Sky Atlantic This crime drama series first aired in 2013 to a record-breaking reception; the pilot episode attracted more viewers than any previous premiere on the US network Showtime. If you still haven’t watched the show for yourself to see what all the fuss is about, the upcoming fifth series will let you make amends when it hits Sky Atlantic. On the subject of making amends, that is exactly what the title character – played to sparkling effect by Liev Schreiber – does for clients of his law firm Goldman & Drexler. Well, sort of. In his role as a “fixer”, Donovan arranges such shady activities as bribes, threats, and payoffs in a bid to quell stories of his rich and famous clients’ dubious activities. But nothing would go awry in family man Donovan’s own personal life, right? Wrong! The show has seen his intimidating father Mickey, impressively portrayed by Jon Voight, surprisingly leave prison and the FBI endeavouring to stop Ray in his tracks. The fifth season arrives at 9pm on 16th August. The Defenders, Netflix In recent years, comics giant Marvel has been serving up an array of TV show treats exclusively for Netflix viewers – and this new series,The Defenders, brings together the stars of four of them. So, step forward Charlie Cox as Daredevil, Mike Colter as Luke Cage, Krysten Ritter as Jessica Jones, and Finn Jones as Iron Fist. It’s like The Avengers in microcosm… That is a pretty apt comparison – as, like the Avengers movies, The Defenders is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and so has continuity with its films. In the first series of The Defenders, 6
all four of our protagonists are facing personal challenges, but soon realise how well they might be able to work as a team. That should hopefully bode well for them as, in New York City, they battle the order of mystical ninjas known as The Hand. If you’ve loved other small screen Marvel/Netflix collaborations, be sure to stream the episodes of this one when they are released on 18th August. The Tick, Amazon Prime Thanks to Deadpool, audiences can easily get on board with the idea of a silly superhero - and they don’t come much dafter than the Tick. A creation of cartoonist Ben Edlund, he’s spoofed his way through comic books and a popular ‘90s animated series - and now he’s back... It’s Peter Serafinowicz who takes the role in Amazon’s liveaction adaptation - or, rather, returns to the role which we previously saw him fulfil to aplomb in the pilot that aired last year. If you saw that show and enjoyed his delivery of such fauxserious lines as “Evil wears every possible mitten”, you could have a lot more of this delightfully quirky material coming your way on 25th August. Edlund himself is executive producing this series - so, you can expect Serafinowicz’s portrayal to stay true to the central character. Will he outperform Seinfeld star Patrick Warburton, who played the Tick in our hero’s last major live-action outing in the 2000s?

Is it possible that Brexit won’t happen at all? There has been a ‘rustling’ in recent times, an indication that matters aren’t quite as certain as they seemed previously. Yes, we’re talking once more about Brexit. Since the general election, it seems that more and more people are beginning to ask whether the UK’s impending departure from the EU may now never come to pass. The doubts are starting to creep in
But has Brexit been chalking up “quiet successes” already?
The likelihood right now is that despite an unexpected general election result that saw the wipeout of Theresa May’s majority in parliament, the UK will, indeed, still leave the EU. At the time of this article being written, Paddy Power was offering still fairly long odds of 20/1 on the Prime Minister performing a U-turn this year by announcing that the UK would remain in the bloc.
There is, of course, a competing school of thought - that, in the words of current foreign secretary Boris Johnson in response to his predecessor, Britain will be “more outward-looking, more engaged, and more active on the world stage than ever before” once it ceases to be a member of the EU. Nor has he exactly been alone, as many have been eager to point out what they claim to be under-celebrated triumphs by Brexit even as formal negotiations have barely begun.
However, there have been some jitters in the aftermath of a much stronger-than-anticipated election showing for the Labour Party. In early July, Newsnight political editor Nicholas Watt said that he was “beginning to hear talk in some quarters that Brexit may not actually happen. I spoke to one Leave supporter who now fears that a combination of a stalling economy and investor fear over a possible [Labour leader Jeremy] Corbyn premiership could create a storm that could stall Brexit.”
As a lead article in the conservative magazine The Spectator points out,“some 85 percent of the public [in the recent election] voted for parties promising a clean exit from the European Union, the better to retrieve sovereignty and freedom to negotiate our own trade deals with the rest of the world. It was a call not to withdraw from the world, but to manage globalisation better; a reminder that the nation state still matters, especially to those who look to it for protection.”
Sure enough, June was a disappointing month for the UK economy, as both the construction and manufacturing industries saw a slowdown in growth, while inflation hit 2.9% - a four-year high far exceeding the Bank of England’s 2% target.
The magazine states that we should “ignore the doom-mongers, and the EU’s attempts to embarrass Britain - a good deal is looking likelier than ever”. Naturally, though, only time will tell whether that seemingly all-important “good deal” will actually come to pass...
These headlines arrive as there continue to be mutters from high-profile figures about Brexit’s perceived negative impact on
8
the UK. Former foreign secretary Lord Hague, for example, told a House of Lords committee last month that it was “logical” to expect the UK to lose foreign policy influence in both Brussels and Washington as a consequence of the country exiting the bloc.

DUNKIRK I
f you’re looking for a romanticised war film that skates over the harsh realities of war, this isn’t it. There are no shots of families waiting for their return at home, no context or background at all. In fact, it is an utterly immersive experience that redefines the meaning of a war film in just 100 minutes. From the director with a filmography like no other who brought us The Dark Knight, Interstellar and Inception, Christopher Nolan presents yet another groundbreaking film. We all know the story of the Dunkirk evacuation where small civilian boats rescued stranded troops from France in 1940, but that doesn’t stop Nolan’s brutally
honest film being unimaginably tense throughout. The film opens with Nazi leaflets falling on a few British soldiers, alone on the empty streets of Dunkirk, announcing that they are surrounded, and the realisation hits that the only way out is by sea. From this moment on, music by Hans Zimmer makes the film unbearably intense, underlying the action like a heartbeat. In fact, the music is the driving force of the film as large sections play with no dialogue at all and any dialogue spoken is almost entirely practical. The film explores the three perspectives of the land, the air
and the sea, all taking place over different time frames but woven together seamlessly. This 12A film does not dwell on the glory of war and the Germans are hardly seen at all, although their threat is ever present. Instead, it is a celebration of heroism in the face of unimaginable suffering. Their constant bravery is inspiring. With that said, however, Nolan does not disguise the helplessness of the protagonists or the unimaginable terror of the 400,000 soldiers on Dunkirk beach. The film depicts the cold reality of war, following everything from Tom Hardy’s Spitfire and the destroyers which fast become a target, to Mr Dawson’s civilian boat, which all
DARLINGTON MONTHLY
“
I hope the film takes people on an exciting, visceral journey into this experience, but that they’re ultimately moved by the human story that anchors it all. That’s what Chris does so well with all films, and very much so with Dunkirk.
Cillian Murphy
play their part in returning the British heroes home. The idea of home is what brings the troops hope, as Kenneth Branagh’s character reminds us: “you can practically see it from here.” The three main characters, who despite looking somewhat confusingly similar in the chaos, are all cast well – yes, even Harry Styles. There was a certain level of controversy over the casting of the former One Direction star, but while you perhaps experience a twinge of recognition when he first appears, you are so completely immersed in the action that you soon forget who he is. He certainly deserves the part, playing a character who portrays the extremes to which
war pushes us in the desperate fight for survival. While other directors have tackled the Second World War and even the Dunkirk evacuation, this is a war film like no other. Nolan explores heroism, desperation and the utter terror that war brings. This film will certainly be a classic and should be seen on the biggest screen possible.

Places to go...
YORK, North Yorkshire
York has more world class sights and attractions per square mile than any other city in the UK. You’re spoiled for choice. If you like going underground, for example, there’s York Minster crypt, the Roman bath house under a pub in St Sampson’s Square, the York Dungeons for a spooky experience, the cellars of the National Trust’s Treasurer’s House with its ghostly legends of Roman legions, and a cold war bunker in the care of English Heritage. Here the Royal Observer Corps would have plotted nuclear explosions and survived underground for up to 30 days after nuclear war began. The bunker is outside the city centre, 1 ¼ miles from the station, walkable along the Acomb Road or use local bus 1.
York offers plenty of opportunity for eating and drinking and staying over. Chocoholics will love the story of chocolate in King’s Square. I have used the Bar Convent at Bootham Bar, where the Catholic nuns are most hospitable, even to an Anglican. The chain hotels can be expensive: on a recent trip from London to Scarborough I tried to book a Premier Inn close to York station and the best price was £130, but I obtained the same standard of accommodation at a Premier Inn close to Doncaster station for only £31.
All of the other attractions are to the east of the station, except the free to enter National Railway Museum which is best reached by the footbridge and footpath from all platforms. Afterwards it offers a half-hourly dotto train (a train which is really a tractor pulling rubber-tyred carriages) to a stop on Duncombe Place close to the Minster. The Minster charges for admission, but if you wish to avoid this the best way is to attend a service. Evensong is sung most afternoons by the choir and you get a much better experience taking part in the worship than paying to walk round. Of course, the plate goes round at the end, and you’ll probably wish to make a voluntary donation.
Have a think about going to York on Bank Holiday Monday 28th August when the full Monday train service is operating, but the fares are at off peak rates all day. We can promise, for example, a day return trip to York from Chester-le-Street at £17.90 with railcard discounts too, for anyone going on the 0815 or 1013 trains direct to York on the bank holiday, returning any time on TransPennine trains. That compares with the published online fare day return of £37.80 you might buy on the internet, and good value fares are available from other stations too. Just ring us to book on 0191 387 1387 and we’ll post tickets out to you. Bear in mind that the Chesterle-Track team each spend nearly two thousand hours a year finding the best deals in booking tickets, so they are likely to do it quicker and more effectively than someone spending, say, four hours online a year doing the same thing. Take advantage of our experience.
The more energetic might try a free walk around the walls, which takes around two hours around the 45 towers, including Micklegate Bar where children will be entranced to hear the sad story of the little girl who lost the keys to the City. Wall walking is not wise in icy weather, but should be ok in August!.
14
For a relaxing trip on the River Ouse, try City Cruises York, which have recently taken over the York Boat company for £2.5m, sailing from the Lendal Bridge near the station.

Employment Round Up ‘The way things were.” Do bosses and their staff view the world of work differently? Well speaking only for myself I can definitely say yes. Time was when I started my first job way back in the mists of time, Friday mornings were reserved for ‘workers playtime.’ Loosely interpreted, this meant once we had safely dispatched the manager to his area meeting, orders were taken and a ‘runner’ sent off to the nearest greasy spoon, so we could munch on our bacon or sausage ‘butties’ as we pondered the Daily Telegraph cryptic crossword! The public didn’t ‘sign on’ on a Friday, so neither did we for an hour or so. If the manager was aware of our ‘shirking’ then it was never referenced and we got away with it. As a boss, I took a much dimmer view of down time, although I did turn a blind eye to the odd 10 minutes or so of idle chitchat, as I reminded myself of my own past errant behaviour. It worked wonders and end result more not less productivity. Give and take in any relationship is the foundation for building trust and confidence whether you’re the boss or the worker.

New hate crime service acts as the Voice of Victims A unique service has launched to support victims of hate crime in Darlington. The Hate Crime Advocacy Service (HCAS) works directly with victims and witnesses of hate crimes and incidents to help them through the process of prosecution. It can also help them to cope with the crime to which they have been subjected. Laws are in place to protect victims of targeted behaviours relating to race, faith, disability, sexual orientation and gender identity. HCAS draws on the expertise of three organisations which offer support for victims of all strands of Hate Crime. Darlington Association on Disability, QuerKey CIC, and Show Racism the Red Card have partnered with Ron Hogg, Police, Crime & Victims’ Commissioner for County Durham and Darlington to create this unique advocacy service. By being a buffer between the victims and the various agencies from the Police to the Crown Prosecution Service or the courts, the advocates can enable better experience and outcomes from the criminal justice process.
and expertise of the three organisations is now available to victims. My intention is that victims should remain at the centre of any prosecution and this project will go a long way to improve how victims of hate crime cope and recover from the experience of crimes targeted at people just because of who they are or what faith they have.” Emma Roebuck, Director QuerKey CIC said: “The voice of the victim is seldom heard in the prosecutions of crime. This leaves the victim adrift and without the opportunity to move beyond the crime and back into normal life. This project will give that voice from the point of reporting to beyond the court room.” Victims or witnesses of a hate crime can obtain free, confidential support by email at: hcasdurham2017@gmail. com or call 01325 267359.
Each agency has expertise in their sector and together they will provide a unique service for victims of crime motivated by prejudice. Victims of all types of hate crime can benefit from using the service. Ron Hogg said: “Not all victims need an advocate but hate crime victims are more likely to need one. The knowledge

Starting School? Things I wish I knew at the start. That time in your child’s life has finally arrived and you will be excited, nervous and quite teary at the idea of your baby becoming a big boy/girl in September. Here are some tips for you to focus on and get organised so the transition can be an enjoyable experience for both of you.
Bag checking It’s very easy after a busy day to miss an important letter and it can end up at the bottom of the bag amongst the banana peel and become unreadable. Every day empty and check your child’s bag together if possible.
Childs own Diary A child is never too young to take some responsibility and be aware of routine and their own needs. Having their own diary of what’s needed each day with you overseeing it will help them to grow their self confidence in themselves and independence. PE day, photo day, trips and special dress up days can all be written in their diary and this will help to make it easier for you to get them interested and prepared.
Treasured possessions It’s very common for young children to want to take personal items into school for security as well as to show the teacher and new friends. Start as you mean to go on and don’t encourage items being taken into the school. Let them have them till hand over and return home with them if it’s necessary. Encourage your child to take a photo in if they find it difficult. Most schools have a show and tell day and your child can take in their awards, trophy’s or talk about a special day out or experience be sure to pop this in the diary. It’s a great confidence builder and will prepare them for school plays and special assemblies if they first start by speaking up in front of their class friends.
Hand over It’s very easy to feed your child your own nervousness and anxiety at hand over. Be aware of this and remember if you have confidence your child will copy and be less likely to be clingy at this point. Stand back and don’t hover or drag out the goodbye. Don’t go on about how much you will miss them but be happy and bright and positive about both your days without each other. Don’t take up a teacher’s time with details of your child unless it’s absolutely necessary. Your school will have a system set up for you to get message to the teacher without it being shared at hand over time and with other children and parents. If your child finds it difficult at drop off get help from another family member and brake the habit. Children behave differently for different people in their family and it’s usually the main care giver that they act up for because they are more secure with them. 20
I am sure there are many more tips and I hope these will help you and your child enjoy the experience of the school journey. Over the next couple of months try not to talk about big school and the new experience too much and remember to always talk about it with positivity and happiness so your child will look forward to their next step and good luck. POETRY CORNER LOVE?
What is the definition of ‘True Love’? It is Not just the appearance of a pure white Dove. We utter the word, perhaps too often, without thought; For the hurt it will cause, if it comes to nought. Few remember ‘Love’ was stated, with firmest conviction; In moments of wrath, ignored, using anger as greater Diction. That word: Used too freely, in relationships around the World; Whilst intended to be unrequited; yet forgotten, as real life’s unfurled! However, no matter what happens, it’s said: ‘Love’ Conquers All; When a Child is protected from the most horrendous to befall. Most would lay down their lives in place of a child: That is True LOVE; No Responsible, caring Person would injure ‘That Dove’!!

Our monthly report on Darlington 1883 from Ray Simpson, Communications and Media Manager
Darlington Football Club launch Football in the Community scheme
Darlington Football Club has launched an exciting Football in the Community scheme to head teachers of primary schools in the town. The club sees a Football in the Community scheme as an ideal way of strengthening its links with the community, by encouraging local primary school pupils to enjoy a matchday experience at a Darlington FC game in the Vanarama National League North, and also introducing them to football as a great way of keeping fit and improving their social and football skills. And in turn, the club hopes that the youngsters will become regular supporters of the club – and bring their friends and parents to games as well! The club’s matchday experience has been a popular innovation over the last five years. Youngsters meet at the ground two hours before a Darlington FC home game, and are given a tour of the ground, a chat and photos with the players in the Darlington FC dressing room and compete in a penalty shootout on the field, as well as watching the game for nothing! The club can also deliver a series of football coaching sessions, which include the matchday experience, or one-off specialist football coaching sessions to schools. The lead coach of the initiative is Deano Browne, who has plenty of experience of Football in the Community schemes, and is a qualified UEFA B Coach. He will be liaising with all the local schools in the town. “Our aim is to persuade more youngsters who live in Darlington and the surrounding area to become interested in the club. There are lots of them wearing the shirts of Premiership clubs, we would like to see more wearing Darlington shirts instead,” he said.
“Through our football coaching sessions, we can offer enrichment in various ways for all the youngsters.” David Johnston, the chief executive officer of Darlington FC, points out that there are advantages for everybody involved. “We pride ourselves as being an integral part of the Darlington community, and with that we have a social responsibility by providing a matchday experience for children and visiting their schools to demonstrate the benefits of playing football and staying healthy. “Engaging with the community is one of our main aims, and hopefully some of these children will become regular fans of our family-friendly club.” More details are available from lead FITC coach Deano Browne on email fitc@darlingtonfc.org and media@darlingtonfc.org
