qualifications to start on a higher education course, however, you may be able to study an Access course in order to progress onto a degree. Access courses are open to everyone over the age of 19, regardless of any previous qualifications. An Access course can be completed within one year and can be studied either during the day or evening. You may be eligible to apply for an Advanced Learner Loan to fund your Access course. Plus, if you go on to study at higher education level and you complete your degree then your Advanced Learner Loan will be written off.

Student loans for Teesside University courses
Those courses delivered in partnership with Teesside University are eligible for a student loan and display the Teesside University logo next to them. Loan repayments only start after you earn over the minimum income threshold. Repayments are based on what you earn, not on the amount borrowed. After 40 years, any outstanding balance is written off.

Asking your employer for support
Employers may be able to pay part or all of your fees upfront.
Your qualification will improve your ability to do your job, advance your career prospects, and your employer benefits from a better qualified and motivated employee.
If your company doesn’t offer sponsored programmes, but you think further study would be beneficial to both parties, make a proposal to them.
Initially talk to your line manager and be prepared to make a case to other senior staff or a personnel manager, who may make decisions on training expenditure.
Alternatively use your appraisal as an opportunity to discuss doing a higher education course.

LEVEL 7
Post Graduate qualifications
Level 7 qualifications recognise highly developed, advanced and complex levels of knowledge which enable the development of in-depth and original responses to complicated and unpredictable problems and situations. Learning at this level involves the demonstration of high level specialist professional knowledge and is appropriate for senior professionals and senior managers.
Level 7 qualifications are at a level equivalent to Master’s degrees, postgraduate certificates and postgraduate diplomas.
LEVEL 6
Honours qualifications
Studying an honours qualification will allow you to develop a specialist, high level knowledge of an area of work, enabling you to use your own ideas and research in response to complex problems and situations. Level 6 qualifications are appropriate if you are working as a knowledge-based professional or in a management position, e.g. Education and Training ProfGradCertEd, and Procurement and Supply Professional Diploma.
LEVEL 5
Higher qualifications
This level increases your depth of knowledge and understanding of an area of work or study, so you can respond to complex problems and situations. You will need a high level of work expertise and competence in managing and training others. These qualifications are appropriate if you are working as a higher grade technician, professional or manager, e.g. Business Management Foundation Degree, Mechanical Engineering HND and Counselling Foundation Degree.
LEVEL 4
Higher qualifications
This level of study involves specialist learning, including detailed analysis of a high level of information and knowledge in an area of work or study. They are appropriate if you are working in a technical or professional job, and/or managing and developing others, e.g. Accounting Diploma, Manufacturing Engineering HNC, Procurement and Supply Diploma.

You will need to apply through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) for all full time foundation degrees or degree courses. Applications should be made as soon as possible. Interview and offer Once your application has been received by the Admissions Department it will be sent to the appropriate
tutor for consideration. You will either then be invited in for an interview, or the tutor will call you to discuss your application and you will have the opportunity to ask any questions. Following this stage, you will be given a conditional offer based on you meeting the relevant entry criteria, including any references, or DBS checks (if required) and work placements.
Enrolment
During enrolment you must complete a Darlington College paper enrolment form. For Teesside University accredited programmes only, you must also complete Teesside University online enrolment on e-vision (a direct link will be emailed to you approximately 5 to 6 weeks before your course start date). If your employer is paying your course fees, you will need to provide a letter from them that states this when you enrol.

This course is designed for those beginning a career in accounting or finance, providing a strong foundation in essential accounting principles and workplace skills. It is suitable for learners looking to progress into junior finance roles or further professional study.

AAT Accounting Certificate L2 or relevant L2 qualification in Business / Finance / Accounting or relevant work experience.
You will develop core knowledge in bookkeeping transactions and controls, costing, accounting software, and effective working practices within a finance environment. All units are mandatory and assessment includes end-of-unit assessments alongside a synoptic assessment that draws together learning from across the course.
This qualification can also be studied as an Accounts or Finance Assistant Apprenticeship.
This course is aimed at learners progressing into more advanced accounting roles and responsibilities. It builds on existing knowledge to develop technical competence and professional confidence within accounting and finance environments.
You will study advanced bookkeeping, final accounts preparation, management accounting, indirect tax, ethics for accountants, and the use of spreadsheets for accounting. Assessment includes individual unit assessments and a synoptic assessment covering the full qualification.
This qualification can also be studied as an Assistant Accountant Apprenticeship.
Diploma in Accounting L3 or PE1 or equivalent of the senior accountancy qualifications or UK Accounting degree.
This programme is designed for those working in, or aspiring to, senior accounting or taxation roles. It develops high-level technical knowledge and decision-making skills required within professional accounting practice.
Core units include management accounting for budgeting, decision and control, financial statements for limited companies, and accounting systems and controls. You will also choose optional units such as business tax, personal tax, auditing, or cash and treasury management.
This qualification can also be studied as a Professional Accounting or Taxation Apprenticeship.

Foundation Certificate in People Practice / HR Support Apprenticeship
CIPD | PT | 32 weeks | 1 year | Level 3
An interview with the course tutor will take place, to ensure that this course is the right course for you.
Whilst there are no formal entry requirements for this course, it is helpful to have a C/4 grade, or equivalent in English to support your written assignment.
This course is designed for those starting a career in human resources or people practice. It provides a recognised foundation aligned with professional HR standards.
You will study business culture andchange, people analytics, core professional behaviours, and essential people practice skills. Learners must hold CIPD Student Membership throughout the course to support professional recognition and progression.
This qualification can also be studied as an HR Support Apprenticeship.
There are 4 assignments to be completed during the course of the year, and a range of assessment methods will be used to validate the content and presentation of information in line with the CIPD assessment criteria.
Progression onto L5 Intermediate Diploma in Human Resource Management, and ultimately, the Advanced L7 Certificate, Diploma or MA in Human Resource Management.

HR Apprenticeship Standard - HR Support

To be in an HR role and have English and maths GCSE grade C/4 or above.
An interview with the course tutor will take place, to ensure that this course is the right course for you.
Experience in an HR role, or People Manager role at a middle manager level and ideally L3 Foundation qualification in Human Resource Practice are beneficial as a background for this programme.
Academic writing is also required for the written content of this programme.
This apprenticeship is designed for individuals working in an HR role who want to develop the knowledge, skills, and behaviours required to succeed in a professional people practice environment. It is suitable for those supporting HR activity within medium to large organisations.
You will support day-to-day HR operations, including handling employee queries, maintaining HR records, and providing accurate HR information to the business. The role covers a wide range of HR processes, from recruitment through to retirement, and supports organisational change initiatives. You will use HR systems and develop professional communication and problem-solving skills aligned with CIPD standards.
Successful completion supports progression within HR and people practice roles.
This course is designed for experienced HR practitioners and aspiring HR professionals who are looking to develop strategic people management skills. It supports progression into advisory, consultant, or management roles within the people profession.
You will develop advanced knowledge of organisational performance and culture, evidence-based practice, and professional behaviours in people management. The course also explores employment relationship management, talent management and workforce planning, and reward for performance. An optional specialist unit in employment law allows you to tailor learning to your professional interests.
Learners must hold CIPD Student Membership throughout the course to support professional recognition. This qualification can also be studied as an HR Consultant Apprenticeship.
L3 HR Support Apprenticeship or relevant experience. English and maths at Grade C/4 or above.
This apprenticeship is designed for individuals working in senior HR roles such as HR consultant, HR business partner, or similar people professional positions. It supports learners to develop the advanced knowledge, skills, and behaviours required to operate effectively at a strategic level within organisations.
You will gain a broad grounding across all key HR disciplines, enabling you to make informed decisions and recommendations in complex workplace situations. The role involves influencing managers, applying best practice, and supporting organisational change. Learning focuses on strategic thinking, professional judgement, and delivering people solutions that align with business objectives.
Successful completion supports progression into senior people management and strategic HR roles.
The L3 CIPD qualification will be a large portion of the assessment.

This course is designed for individuals working in procurement or supply chain roles who want to develop professional knowledge and practical skills aligned with industry standards. It is suitable for those supporting procurement activity within a range of organisational settings.
You will develop an understanding of ethical and socially responsible procurement, contract administration, and the role of procurement within different organisational environments. The course also explores team dynamics, change management, and sustainable or ethical supply and warehousing practices. Learning is focused on applying professional procurement principles to real workplace scenarios.
This qualification can also be studied as a Procurement and Supply Assistant Apprenticeship.
Procurement and Supply Diploma

An interview with the course tutor will take place, to ensure that this course is the right course for you.
A minimum of at least two A-levels (or international equivalent) or a CIPS Level 3 Advanced Certificate qualification is required. Alternatively, you will need a minimum of two years relevant experience in a business environment.
This course is designed for individuals working in procurement or commercial roles who want to develop advanced professional knowledge and skills. It is ideal for those seeking to progress into senior operational or management-level positions within procurement and supply.
The programme is structured around the procurement cycle and develops understanding of core procurement principles and professional practice. You will gain knowledge and practical skills in areas including contracting, negotiation, supplier relationship management, ethical procurement, and asset management. The course also explores how procurement supports wider organisational objectives and informs strategic business decision-making.
Set at a level comparable to the first year of an undergraduate degree, this qualification equips learners with knowledge and skills that can be applied immediately in the workplace. It represents the highest entry point into CIPS diploma-level study.
They are externally set and marked examinations for each of the five subjects.

This advanced-level qualification is designed for experienced procurement and supply professionals who want to develop strategic knowledge and leadership capability. It builds on the CIPS Level 4 Diploma and supports progression into senior procurement, commercial, or supply chain management roles.
The course develops advanced understanding of risk management within supply chains, contract evaluation and administration, and the legal implications of contract breaches. You will also explore approaches to managing teams and individuals, alongside sustainability and ethical practices within procurement and supply environments. Learning focuses on applying strategic procurement principles to complex organisational challenges.
Successful completion supports progression to senior professional practice and higher-level CIPS study.

This qualification is designed for senior procurement and supply professionals who want to operate at a strategic and leadership level. It is recognised internationally and supports progression into high-level commercial and supply chain management roles.
The programme focuses on developing and delivering effective procurement and supply strategies that support long-term organisational success. You will explore the development and implementation of global commercial strategies, alongside strategic supply chain management and performance optimisation. Learning emphasises leadership, strategic decision-making, and delivering sustainable competitive advantage across complex procurement environments.
Successful completion demonstrates advanced professional competence and supports progression into senior leadership roles within procurement and supply.

Each of the modules will be assessed by an exam. Exams are a mixture of objective response and constructive response. There are 6 opportunities throughout the year to take an exam.

Management and Leadership Diploma or Operations/ Department Manager Apprenticeship
CMI | PT | 34 weeks | 1 year
This qualification is suitable for learners who are in or aspiring to a team leader / supervisor role. Learners will have English and maths at Grade C/4 or above or Level 2. As a learner you will ideally be working within an organisation or role where you can demonstrate skills and apply knowledge. Alternatively, you could draw on previous experience within an organisation or use an organisation you are familiar with.
This qualification is suitable for learners who are in or aspiring to a middle manager role. Learners will have English and Maths at Grade C/4 or above or Level 2, and you will ideally be working within an organisation or role where you can demonstrate skills and apply the knowledge in the programme. Alternatively, you could draw on previous experience within an organisation or use an organisation you are familiar with.
This qualification is designed for practising or aspiring team leaders and supervisors who are responsible for managing people, projects, and day-to-day operations.
The course develops skills in leadership, communication, project delivery, resource and budget management, and personal professional development. Assessment is coursework-based and focused on applying learning to the workplace.
This qualification can also be studied as a Team Leader Apprenticeship.
Assignments and module assessments are completed throughout the year. Continuous assessment means that you know how you are progressing and can talk about this to your tutor.
The whole programme is externally assessed by the Institute to ensure national standards are maintained.
Progression onto the CMI Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management, or the Operations/ Department Manager Apprenticeship.
This course is designed to support managers and aspiring managers in developing the skills and knowledge required to lead teams and manage operations effectively.
You will study operational leadership, managing people and teams, stakeholder relationships, project management, finance, change management, and reflective professional practice. The programme supports career development across a wide range of management contexts.

Applicants should hold a Level 5 Foundation Degree in Counselling or an equivalent qualification. Candidates with a Level 4 Diploma in Counselling and prior research study at Level 5 or above may also be considered.
Due to the professional nature of the programme, applicants must provide two written references, including one academic reference and one from a clinical supervisor or practice advisor. Suitability for the course will be assessed through references and interview.
