Oes Salaam lies the mighty Nyerere National Park, together with Selous, one of Africa’s least known yet wildest conservation areas. A World Heritage Site, Game Reserve and the largest expanse of National Park in Africa. The Nyerere National Park, together with Selous’ ecosystem as a whole is made up of a few conservation areas, namely Mikumi in the north and the Kilombero gamecontrolled area in the west, covering in total over 90,000 sq km of pristine wilderness devoid
A part of the Reserve’s modern-
day area was set aside as a game conservancy as far back as 1905, an area which was expanded and named (after Frederick Courtenay Selous, a 19th century hunter and soldier) in the 1920s. Repeated sleeping sickness epidemics during the 1930s and 1940s meant that the area’s human inhabitants moved out, leaving the Selous area to the animals. Today, sleeping sickness is a thing of the distant past, but the Selous is still an uninhabited, untamed slice of Africa. In 1982, the Reserve’s unique ecosystem was recognised internationally and the area designated a World Heritage Site by the United Nations.
The greater part of the northern sector of Selous is earmarked for photographic tourism, and it is one of the most beautiful and game-rich areas in the whole ecosystem. Three quarters of the Reserve is woodland of various types, short grassy plains,

Located in south-east Tanzania in a remote and little-visited part of the country, at an unbelievable 50,000 sq km, Nyerere National Park, together with Selous forms the combination of Park and Game Reserve. The Reserve covers more than 5% of Tanzania’s total land area, and is three times larger than the Serengeti. Although slightly off the beaten track of the more well-worn safari circuits, a visit to Nyerere National Park, together with Selous offers unforgettable game viewing in almost completely isolated surroundings.
THE WILDLIFE
Nyerere National Park, together with Selous contains about one third of all the wild dogs
(often called painted dogs) in the world. Their need to roam vast areas and their formidable hunting skills have caused many to be shot by farmers, but here in Nyerere National Park, together with Selous they have boundless woodlands and savannas in which to roam. Over 800,000 mammals, including lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, buffalos, zebras, impalas, gnus, hartebeests, waterbucks, giraffes, kudus, warthogs, grysbok, hyenas, jackals, wild dogs, bush babies, baboons, Vervet monkeys and mongooses are also present. And that’s without mentioning the reserve’s specialty – an abundance of hippopotamuses and crocodiles.

ACTIVITIES
You won’t be disappointed to have a few days safari in the Nyerere National Park, together with Selous. The conservation area allows walking and boating safaris, unlike other national parks, and guiding standards are high. Many camps will arrange

WHEN TO GO
Dry Season: The dry season sets in during June to November and is the best time for game viewing out of the bush at that time and predators are more commonly seen.

Exploring Zanzibar at its fullest with Maru Maru hospitality
On the historic island of Zanzibar, amidst the quaint, narrow alleys of Stone Town is Maru Maru Hotel, once a townhouse now boasts 51 well-laid rooms.
Maru Maru Hotel consists of two wings – the Classic Wing with 11 rooms, which have undergone restoration, and the New Wing with 33 modern rooms built around a small courtyard with a star-shaped fountain. The courtyard is ideal for spending time quietly reading, the noise of the water in the fountain a soothing backdrop. On the way to the courtyard, there is a coffee shop which also serves freshly baked pastries and cakes just in case you want to sit and enjoy a cup of coffee or tea whilst rewinding.
The rooms are well equipped with modern amenities, a comfortable bed in Zanzibari style, swathed in a mosquito net, which is not only essential but also creates a romantic atmosphere with the stained-

hotel’s personality, it’s evident why Maru Maru has been the
preferred property for eminent personalities like Bill Clinton and his daughter, Chelsea. And it wasn’t just the atmosphere that struck me, the scent of the place did too: the hotel smells wonderful as day-long diffusers burn perfumed essential oils.
Maru Maru serves a delightful variety of cuisines, especially Continental and Asian – quality is great and portions are generous. I especially loved the way an array of sauces was offered which you could blend with the main ingredient – poultry, meat, seafood or vegetables.
All the staff right - from the General Manager, receptionist, chefs –lead and supporting roles were super friendly and helpful. Services and requests were promptly addressed.
So, if you’re after an affordable Stone Town break – Maru Maru is a great option and delivers the perfect launch pad from where to explore this historic little place.

With only days to go until the opening of the 23rd edition of Sauti za Busara, excitement continues preparations intensify for Africa’s “Friendliest Festival on Planet Earth,” taking place Thursday 5th to Sunday 8th February 2026 with a soft opening on Wednesday 4th at its new home, the Mnazi Mmoja grounds in Stone Town.

Swahili Encounters brings musicians from different countries together to rehearse and perform collaborative sets, prioritising process over spectacle. Industry platforms such as Movers & Shakers create space for professional dialogue, an often-overlooked pillar of sustainable creative economies.
