Meet Bee

From tennis courts to nursing, global adventures, and championship pickleball, Bee Kilgore has built a life defined by courage and gratitude.

B

By Anne Angstenberger, Resident since 2006 Photos provided by Bee Kilgore

orn in New York City, Bee Kilgore only lived a short while on the East Coast, as her family moved to the Bay Area when she was just 3 months old. Bee spent her childhood in Marin County, where she played competitive tennis starting at 5 years old. From the age of 8, and up until her sophomore year at Arizona State University, Bee traveled every summer playing in national tournaments. Some of her accolades included being ranked number 2 in the USA Girls 18 Doubles and also contributing to her ASU team winning the National Collegiate Championship her freshman year. Bee also had the opportunity to play in a Pro-Celebrity tournament, partnering and playing with Clint Eastwood…it’s safe to say that was a memory of a lifetime! Although tennis would always remain close to her heart (she continued to teach lessons on and off over the years), Bee knew early on that she wanted to become a nurse, and ultimately returned back home to the Bay Area to receive her BSN at San Jose State. In 1979 she officially gave up professional tennis to become an ICU trauma nurse.

In 1997, Bee met her husband, Jack, through a mutual friend. Having been born in Hong Kong, then moving to the United States when he was 8 years old, he eventually settled down on the west side of Danville in the 1980’s. Jack bought the home because it was close to his work, yet felt like the country although was in walking distance to our quaint town with sweeping views of Mt. Diablo. Bee eventually moved into that same home and the two lived an adventurous life together for over 20 years. Their many shared interests included the love of the outdoors and traveling. Their most demanding hike was climbing to base camp of Mt. Everest in 2001. However, the biggest challenge the couple faced was revealed in 2013 right before leaving to hike the Dolomites. Jack was diagnosed with Stage IV cancer at the age of 67. Bee recounts that “he fought with incredible hope and courage for an entire year, and I took care of him 24 hours a day until he passed away. We got married at Stanford Hospital just a month before he died in 2014. That was a life changing day for me.” Before Jack passed away he told Bee “Sweetheart, do not stay at home and be sad, go live your life, do what you love, love what you do, and make a difference to others like you always do.” That is exactly what she has done to honor their love and life together. One of the highlights of Bee’s promise to Jack has been to ride horses again. Six months after he died, she participated in the All American Horse Drive in Colorado. Each year since, she has participated in cattle drives moving over 800 cattle over 100 miles from their summer to winter pastures. But perhaps most notably, Bee’s life forever changed in 2020 when one of her best friends invited her to play Pickleball at Blackhawk Country Club. Apprehensive at first, Bee only agreed

During the course of Bee’s nursing career, she worked for many years at San Francisco General and also participated in several Medical Missions to underdeveloped countries, which remain some of the most rewarding moments in her lifetime. Bee recalls “When I was 30 years old I traveled alone around the world for two years working and living with local families. I also made friends through tennis while I traveled. When I returned after my global adventure, I continued working as a nurse in different areas, including Sports Medicine and Plastic Surgery. She moved to Tahoe when her nephew was born there in 1995, and worked as a Concierge at the Resort at Squaw Creek where she met the President of a Sports Marketing company who 8

for one “open play” night. She quickly realized how much fun it was, how nice the people were, and it brought her right back to her tennis roots…she was pretty good! Another close friend told her the “better players” played at Rudgear Park, so Bee and her doubles partner, Pam Cooke from Alamo, decided to check it out…”the rest is history.” The pair quickly entered their first tournament in Arizona and remarkably, won every tournament, including the US Open, which is the largest tournament of the year attracting over 3500 players from around the world. They also won the National Pickleball Championships in Palm Desert that same inaugural year. Now in her 6th year of playing pickleball, she continues to grow by practicing with much younger local professional players, drilling for 2-3 hours and playing at least 4 times a week. Bee’s focus, consistency, natural hand-eye coordination, and her dedication to learning from everyone she has practiced with has led her to numerous National and US Open championships, winning the world Senior Games, English Open in Singles, and the Mallorca Open in women 55+ doubles. This past year Bee entered 5 events at the US Open, with no expectations, just a mindset of “practice hard, just do your best and give it your all.” Since there were no other women entries in the 70-74 category, she was merged with the 65’s age group. She knew she had her work cut out for her, especially with one of her opponents who had a huge fan club. Bee only had one friend to cheer her on, but her mantra was simply “one point at a time.” Making it to the finals she played the number 1 seed (who was 65 and Bee, 71), a match she won’t forget. Bee remembers “She had me 10-7 in the third set. She needed just one point to win…and again, I just said “one point at a time!” and somehow I won 12-10 in the third set. I threw my paddle up in the air and cried!” I looked up to the sky and said “I did it!” She knew Jack would be smiling! By the 5th event, and having beaten an ex-Wimbledon Champion, she had won her 5th Gold Medal and even received recognition for this historical moment from CBS Sports. After calling her brother and nephew to share the news, word spread quickly though several of her friends at Blackhawk and the Danville community who called and texted her to say how proud and happy they were for Bee. Although being a professional pickleball player brings Bee joy and accomplishment, helping people and making a difference in people’s lives is what is most important to Bee. She takes her paddle with her wherever she goes and loves introducing the sport to others. (She recently taught pickleball in Japan and made a lot of new friends; in fact one 15-year-old Japanese pickleball player came to stay with her for 3 weeks this summer.) She has a few more tournaments this year, but is also looking forward to hiking, bike trips, and another cattle drive in the fall. When she is back home in Danville she is reminded how much she loves being home as well. Whether it’s hiking Las Trampas, riding her bike on the Iron Horse Trail, walking

the neighborhoods, playing pickleball locally, or just admiring her view of Mt. Diablo and loving the wild life that frequents her property, Bee is grateful to have lived here for over 30 years. She loves her neighbors who always watch out and

Expert Contributor

The Fine Art of Helping Without Hovering By Christina Dalton, MS, PPS, MCC, EYH Life/College Coach

This is the second article of a four part series.

T

he college application process has a funny way of turning otherwise reasonable adults into project managers.

It usually starts innocently enough.

A parent asks about deadlines. Then they create a spreadsheet. Before long, they’re color-coding essay drafts, tracking recommendation letters, monitoring application portals, and wondering why their teenager seems irritated every time college comes up. Sound familiar? If so, you’re not alone. For many Danville families, the challenge isn’t whether to support their student. It’s figuring out how to support them without accidentally taking over. Parents naturally want to help. College is a significant investment of time, energy, and money. It’s understandable to want everything to go smoothly. But here’s the catch: colleges aren’t just evaluating academic performance. They’re evaluating readiness for independence. Students who learn to manage deadlines, communicate with adults, advocate for themselves, and navigate challenges are developing skills they’ll need long after application season ends. That’s why one of the most valuable roles a parent can play is that of coach rather than manager. Coaches provide encouragement, accountability, and perspective. They don’t run onto the field and take the ball.

As decisions begin arriving, emotions can run high. Some students will receive exciting news. Others will face disappointment.

During these moments, parents set the tone.

A rejection from one college doesn’t define a student’s future. An acceptance doesn’t guarantee happiness or success. What matters most is finding an environment where the student can learn, grow, and thrive.

One practical strategy is to establish designated college conversations rather than making admissions a daily topic. A weekly check-in often works better than constant reminders.

Years from now, most students won’t remember every application deadline or essay revision.

Teenagers generally know they have essays to write. They don’t need hourly notifications.

Did they feel supported? Trusted? Encouraged?

Parents can also pay attention to the questions they’re asking.

What they will remember is how they felt during the process. The college admissions journey is ultimately about more than gaining acceptance to a school.

There’s a difference between, “Did you finish your Common App?” and “How’s the application process feeling right now?”

It’s about helping a young person become capable of navigating life on their own.

One question focuses on tasks. The other opens the door to meaningful conversation.

And that transformation is worth far more than any acceptance letter.

Comparison is another challenge. In close-knit communities, families inevitably hear about other students’ accomplishments. Someone’s child attended a prestigious summer program. Someone else landed an internship. Another student earned a near-perfect test score. The problem is that comparison rarely provides useful information. It simply increases anxiety. Every student has different strengths, interests, goals, and opportunities. The admissions process is not a race where everyone starts from the same place.

If you are stuck, in this very difficult stage, we are here to help, EYHCollegeCoach.com. Let’s define success together.

Christina Dalton is the Principal of EYH Life Coach. She applies her own personal and career transitions along with several degrees and credentials to provide insight and knowledge into the coaching experience. Cooking Corner

Rita’s Oatmeal Cookies By Stephanie Seaberg, Resident since 2010 Not gonna lie… I don’t like oatmeal cookies. But I LOVE these oatmeal cookies. Oatmeal cookies are often the last cookie left on the platter at any party. They truly don’t get enough love. I was offered one of these delicious delights at a social function, and I must’ve spent nearly 10 minutes eating this one cookie. Just chewing it so slowly and enjoying every single morsel. Rita Nordquist of the Dublin Senior Center Melody Minstrels was kind enough to pass on the recipe for me to share. Does it have a lot of butter and sugar? Yes. Am I pretending it’s healthy because it has oatmeal in it? Yes. Did I eat three of these while I was writing this article?… Also, yes. Will you make this for your next Labor Day party? You betcha!

YOU WILL NEED; •

3 eggs, well beaten

•

1 cup raisins

•

1 teaspoon of vanilla extract

•

1 cup of butter, soft

•

1 cup brown sugar

•

1 cup white sugar

•

2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

•

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

•

1 teaspoon salt

•

2 teaspoons baking soda

•

2 cups oatmeal

•

3/4 cup chopped pecan

and baking soda. Gradually stir the dry mixture into the sugar mixture until well incorporated. Add the oatmeal, nuts and soaked raisins. The mixture will be a little stiff. Drop rounded teaspoons of cookie dough onto a baking sheet, but be careful not to go bigger, or it won’t bake evenly. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes.

PUTTING IT TOGETHER; In a small bowl, combine the raisins, eggs and vanilla. Cover and set aside for one hour. Preheat the oven to 350°. In a medium size bowl, cream the butter and sugars together. Then in a second bowl, blend the flour, salt, cinnamon,

Pope Valley – Some of Wine Country’s Best By Ted Johnson, Resident since 1991, Photos by by Dan Schultz

Pope Valley Vineyard

T

hough the Napa Valley is world-renowned, many locals know that some of the best varietals of “Napa type” wines are sourced on the “other side of the hill” – meaning, the ridge to the east. On the other side is Pope Valley where the soil and elevation changes are the same, though the heat seems more intense. The result are wineries that produce rich and classic “Napa style” varietals like cabernet sauvignon, syrah and petit syrah without the world-class prices. It’s worth the extra effort, and the spinal cord of this experience stretches from Butts Canyon Road near Middleton in the north to the south on Pope Valley Road and then onto Lower Chiles Valley Road. The payoff is the resplendent Northern California terrain of burnished brown hillsides dappled with heritage oaks. From Danville, a ride up to the Napa Valley and crossing over the Silverado

Trail to the junction with Highway 128 east will bring you around Lake Hennessy and onto Pope Valley Road. The two-lane roads in this region rise and buck with the slopy, oak-covered hillsides, so hold onto your coffee cup. At the Rustridge Winery located at the junction of Pope Valley and Lower Chiles Valley roads, you can find a “dark, intense, and rustic style of Petite Sirah best paired with rich, heavy, or savory foods (like grilled or seared meats).” This is an area rich in zinfandel, Syrah, cabernet and other “big red” varietals. Though the elevations of some vineyards approach 1,000 feet, meaning cooler nights, during the day you feel a more intense heat. When I was there in early August it was 102 in the sun. And yet the lush, full verdant vineyards below the Lower Chiles Valley Road seemed to revel in the strong sun. You could almost feel the tannins surging into grape skins. A couple years later, these wines will growl at the heaviest barbecue sauces on your ribs and laugh at the Bearnaise sauce atop your tomahawk rib-eye. The 2023 Langtry Farms cabernet is listed at $45 a bottle, about half of what would be found to the west for such a deep, luscious red for its (from the website) “concentrated dark fruit flavors, structural depth, and refined, mature tannins.” But should you want to explore, you can find the $145 cab at the Maxville Winery, as well as similarly priced vintages at the eponymous Pope Valley Winery. Also, for a change of pace, drop into the Hub Cap Farm almost across the road. The number of wineries per mile are far, far fewer than in the Napa Valley. Thus, many are not open during Mondays and Tuesdays, and most allow visitors by appointment only, though all have their wines available online. It’s best to plan ahead. On the other hand, traffic in

this region is much less compared to Napa Valley on a Saturday or Sunday. Also, there are stretches of deep remoteness. It’s ironic to know that with California’s population at about 40 million, which means about 1 in 8 people in this country live in this state, there are still regions very near cultural outposts like St. Helena that bring you into vast expanses of open land. And that’s a reminder of the natural threats therein: Butts Canyon Road was closed in 2014 due to a huge wildfire, and scorched tree stalks remain on many hillsides.

Wines & Barrels at Pope Valley

It’s a day-long getaway that reminds us again that Northern California has many attractions, and even more remote locations like the Pope Valley reveal its charms once you arrive.

Division II State School of Year: San Ramon Valley High School By Mark Tennis, Cal Hi Sports

O

ne year after the Wolves gained their first-ever state school of the year honor, they have repeated in the same division. The highlight for the 2025-26 year came on the same day in Sacramento and in the first-ever CIF state soccer championships. San Ramon Valley first won the CIF D2 state title for girls soccer with a 1-0 win over Westlake of Westlake Village. Freshman Morgan Van Puffelen scored the game-winning goal in overtime. The SRV boys then came out on to the pitch and didn’t need overtime in a 4-1 win to win their CIF state title over Mira Monte of Bakersfield. Aden DePaco led the way with three goals. Both of the Wolves’ teams had to go on the road for multiple days as lower seeds to even get into the state finals. The boys had a 2-1 win in their regional final over a Berkeley team that they had lost to 1-0 in the CIF North Coast Section playoffs. The girls won in their regional final over higher seeded Archbishop Mitty. The girls at SRV also scored a lot of school of the year points in flag football, girls basketball, softball and swimming. The flag football team went 18-6 and defeated Granada of Livermore, 14-7, to win the NCS D1 title. The girls hoopers finished 27-4, won the NCS Open Division title, won a NorCal Open playoff game over Pinewood of Los Altos Hills and then lost to Clovis West of Fresno in the NorCal Open semifinals. The softball team rolled to a memorable 12-1 win in the NCS D1 final against College Park after it got past league rival Livermore in the semifinals before the season ended in a NorCal D1 playoff loss to St. Francis of Mountain View. It also was a strong showing for the SRV girls at the CIF state swimming championships where the Wolves notched 128 points, good enough for fourth-place in the overall team standings.

The San Ramon Valley girls soccer team won the first-ever CIF D2 state title and were followed immediately by the SRV boys doing the same in their D2 state final.

Selling Your House As-Is vs. Remodeling By Lisa Hopkins-Cochran, REALTOR® at Compass

W

hether you’ve owned your house for 5 years or 50 years, when you’re thinking about selling you will likely pause to consider whether or not there are home improvement projects that need to be done first. If your home has a current look and oozes pride of ownership, you might not need to do much, if anything. But what if your home looks like a time capsule from 1960, or more likely, it’s a mix of many decades? There is no “one size fits all” answer to this question, and ultimately, as the home seller, you will need to make the decisions that make the most sense for you. Let’s start with a comparison of two different homes. First the similarities. Both homes are in Danville, and both were built in 1958. Both homes sit on a modest, flat lot, with a private yard with no significant improvements. One home is quite small, in an excellent location. The other home is much larger, in a good, but fairly average location for Danville. For the best return on investment, which homeowner may want to consider extensive remodeling? In this situation, the owner of the smaller home may do better off selling as-is. Why? Based on the excellent location, there may be a good number of buyers who are interested in the property for lot value, which is quite high. Upgrades put into the small house might not change the value at all, if potential buyers are planning to tear it down or do a major addition. The larger house in the average location will take a much bigger hit on the sales price, if the house needs a lot of cosmetic improvements and even more if it is a major fixer. The difference with the larger house is that the value is tied more to comparable sales in the neighborhood. It’s unlikely that buyers will look at it as a tear down. Instead, they will look at it and start doing the math. How much will a new kitchen cost? 3 New Bathrooms? New hardwood floors throughout the home? New windows & doors? Fresh new landscaping and hardscape? The list might be long. Another big consideration is time. The majority of buyers today prefer a home that is move-in perfect. Most often with busy careers, busy lives and no remodeling experience, these buyers have decided that they will wait to find a home that they love, just the way it is, so that they do not have to invest their time in working on the home. Not all home sellers have the time or desire to handle remodeling, either. In some situations, a home must be sold quickly, leaving very few resources or options for improvements. What’s a seller to do? Consult with your trusted Realtor® before you begin spending time and money on home improvements. Why? Your

Realtor® can look at your home objectively and help guide you, letting you know which improvements are likely to have a great return, and which ones might not. They will likely have suggestions that you might not have thought of. They can also help you evaluate the market and provide estimates of what your home will sell for with and without improvements. With in depth knowledge, you can then make an educated decision about the path that’s best for you. Every home sale is unique. Please feel free to reach out to me at 925964-5010 or via email at Lisa.Hopkins@Compass.com with questions or for a custom analysis and consultation. Even if you’re not planning to move, I’m happy to help by providing you with relevant data, enabling you to make a well informed decision. It’s never too early to start planning for success!

The History of Monte Vista’s and San Ramon Valley’s Football Rivalry By Kaitlyn Borris

A

s we all know, it is that time of year again: high school football season. A time where students and families dress up in their favorite school spirit to cheer for their family and friends, or for the fun of the game. Monte Vista and San Ramon Valley hold home or away football games every Friday night during the season. Kids and adults love to watch the football players and cheer for their team; the spirit is unmatched. One football game in particular, the Monte Vista versus San Ramon Valley game, is the biggest of the season, with the stadium packing in over 3000 people. Why is that? It is because of our tradition’s spirited rivalry with one another. But have we ever thought about where this rivalry rooted from, or how long it has been going on? For some background, San Ramon Valley High School was founded in 1910, with Monte Vista High School opening 55 years later in 1965. Monte Vista was built to help the suburban growth in Danville as the valley outgrew San Ramon Valley High’s capacity. The founding of Monte Vista was a major relief to Danville and Alamo residents. The first recorded football season at SRV was in 1913, and the first recorded football season at MV was in 1968. Which means the playful rivalry of the town is at most 58 years old. The first match the two had was in 1968 with Monte Vista winning 6-0. With Monte Vista’s debut victory, San Ramon Valley fans began to feel intimidated by the match, which further fueled the rivalry. However, the playful banter that has followed that first football game doesn’t root from jealousy or resentment, it stems from a desire for community. What people want in a town is community, and the high schools are just one of many that people can bond over. During the 1960s, Danville was considered a rural area with a slow-paced atmosphere, up until the construction of the I-680 freeway in 1964. Other community events during that area were SRVHS gatherings, music festivals, Danville Theater showings, and parades on Hartz Avenue.

Although Danville still held numerous community events throughout the 1960s, it is small compared to what the town has to offer now. People yearn for excitement and fury, and that is exactly what the Monte Vista and San Ramon Valley football teams have to offer. In the late 2000s, Monte Vista and San Ramon Valley had developed a student organization revolving around encouraging school spirit and setting up school events, called “12th Man.” These groups of students building their school’s passion and drive only exemplified the rivalry between the two schools. The question is now, “Who has more spirit?” 2011 marked the beginning of the 12th Man rap battle between Monte Vista and San Ramon Valley. Every year before the big rivalry game between MV and SRV, both schools would post a rap singing about the other school, in hopes to intimidate the other. Over the years, tons of people have found enjoyment listening to these raps, watching the music videos, and debating on which is better. Personally, I find them both impressive, and every year I am still taken by surprise how much work has been put into these videos. Danville’s football history has remained strong and engaging for decades, and there is nothing that’ll stop its momentum. I can’t wait to see what new traditions we will build in the coming years. As of now, there are only a couple months until the big rivalry game, and I hope to see you guys there! Kaitlyn Borris is a junior at San Ramon Valley High School. She works at two local restaurants as a hostess in The Danville Livery. She spends most of her time studying, and when she’s not, she’ll be writing. She is delighted with the opportunity of contributing to the community by doing what she loves.
