aving moved to the west side of Danville this past summer, Keri Hawkins has finally landed in the place where she has been sharing her professional passion, creative vision and community impact for the past several years. As owner of The Pilates Theory and Danville’s newest collective space, The Social House, Keri has fallen in love with her neighborhood and is working hard to create “tangible spaces where people connect, move and thrive.”

With Pilates as the foundation, Keri explains that “through breathwork we build a calm mind, through resistance we build a strong body, and through community we support mental health and longevity.” Keri is also dedicated to bringing people together and this year has expanded her business ventures as Co-Owner of The Social House, a collaboration of women-owned businesses that host creative workshops, retail space, and social events…providing a space for women to “foster genuine connection.” It is also where Keri hosts her monthly “Female Founders Circle” for women in the community to gather and support one another in their pursuit to launch and scale their own businesses locally. Coaching business entrepreneurs has always been a passion of Keri’s and is an extension of her commitment to helping others fulfill their own dreams. In addition to that, she has also spent the last 6 years training in Brazilian Jiujitsu and teaches women’s self defense seminars across the East Bay. While her business accomplishments have provided Keri with many opportunities to showcase her dedication, resilience and passion for health and longevity, her most important personal fulfillment comes from being a mother to her two children, Abbey and Hudson. Abbey is a freshman at SRVHS and can be found dancing at Next Step and Bella Dance Academies. Her younger brother, Hudson,

Keri was born and raised in Fremont’s Mission San Jose area and landed at UC Santa Barbara, receiving a BS in Business and Statistics. She had a successful 18 year career as a Sales and Marketing Executive within top Fortune 100 Companies in the Medical Device Market. While balancing a demanding professional career, her “personal passion was quietly taking root.” During her time living and working in New York City in the early 2000s, Keri stepped into her first Pilates class and instantly “fell in love with the movement.” Throughout multiple career related moves, she always found her “home” in a local Pilates studio. During that time, she began dreaming about one day leaving the corporate world to fulfill her passion of “creating a warm and welcoming space where people could experience the transformative power of Pilates,” just like she had. After having her children, she made the decision to move her family back to her roots in the East Bay and opened her first boutique concept Pilates studio in 2015. For many years, she continued to juggle the demands of a full time career while also running a small business. Keri notes that “the Pandemic forced a moment of clarity,” and she finally decided to go all 8

is heartfelt and one many of us share…. “I am truly grateful to be living and working in the Danville community. I have met some amazing people since moving to the area over 10 years ago. As they say, ‘It takes a village to raise kids’ and I couldn’t be more thankful to have found mine here.”

A cherished family tradition for the last 10 years has been take the kids to Poipu Beach on Kauai at the beginning of summer. Finding time as a family to travel to beach destinations, as well as taking advantage of international travel (Italy and France are their favorites) and exposing the children to as many cultures and environments as possible is very important to Keri. She makes a point that Abbey and Hudson understand that “we are incredibly blessed to live in such a safe and tight knit community; I don’t want them to take that for granted.” Having lived in East Danville and Alamo for the past ten years, recently moving to the west side has brought the family even closer to our community. Keri loves being able to walk downtown and have direct access to all the wonderful businesses that make up our charming downtown. One of Keri’s favorite things about living on the west side is “we all have a common goal of keeping our neighborhoods safe and fun for our kids”. She thinks that giving her kids the opportunity to grow up in a small community with deep traditions and where families support one another, provides a solid foundation that they will carry into adulthood. Forget the Rankings. Find the Right Fit. By Christina Dalton, MS, PPS, MCC, EYH Life/College Coach This is the third article of a four part series.

E

very fall, thousands of families begin what I call “The Great College Search.”

The process often starts with good intentions. Students explore majors, research campuses, and attend information sessions. Then, somewhere along the way, a funny thing happens. The rankings show up. Suddenly, a college that seemed perfect on Tuesday becomes “not good enough” by Friday because it moved three spots in a magazine list. Parents compare notes. Students compare statistics. Everyone starts speaking a new language filled with acceptance rates, rankings, and acronyms. And before long, many families lose sight of the question that matters most: Will this college be a good fit for my student? For years, we’ve been conditioned to believe that college admissions is a treasure hunt where the prize is the most prestigious institution possible. But after working with hundreds of families, I’ve observed something surprising. The happiest college students are not necessarily the ones attending the most selective schools. They’re the ones who found environments where they belong.

Fit looks different for every student.

Some thrive on large campuses with football stadiums, research labs, and tens of thousands of students. Others flourish in smaller communities where professors know their names and classes feel more personal. Some students want a bustling city. Others prefer a traditional college town. Some are eager to travel across the country. Others want to stay closer to home.

None of these preferences are right or wrong. They’re simply different.

Yet many students spend more time researching rankings than researching themselves. When families visit colleges, I encourage them to pay attention to things that never appear on a ranking list. Can you imagine yourself here? Do students seem engaged? Does the campus culture feel welcoming?

diploma. The pressure to chase prestige is understandable, especially in communities where education is highly valued. Parents want opportunities for their children. Students want to keep doors open. But sometimes the pursuit of prestige causes families to overlook schools that might actually be better matches.

The goal isn’t simply to get into college.

The goal is to find a place where a student can thrive. Years from now, your teenager probably won’t remember where a college ranked on a list. They’ll remember the friendships they built, the professors who inspired them, the challenges they overcame, and the experiences that shaped who they became. That’s what makes a college truly great.

And no ranking can measure that.

Can you picture spending four years learning, growing, and building relationships in this environment? Those questions often reveal more than any ranking ever could. Another reality that deserves more attention is that success is not reserved for graduates of a handful of highly selective universities. Employers consistently value skills such as communication, problem-solving, leadership, adaptability, and initiative. Those qualities can be developed at hundreds of excellent colleges. A student’s experience often matters more than the name on the

Higher Interest Rates Offer Opportunities for Home Buyers By Lisa Hopkins-Cochran, REALTOR® at Compass

Y

es, you read the tile correctly. It’s not a typo. Most often, buyers consider higher interest rates a big negative in the home buying process. Many simply walk away from the market, waiting for interest rates to drop. Have you ever stopped to think that this is actually a really good thing for the buyers who remain in the market? Cash buyers are usually well aware of the advantage that higher mortgage interest rates bring. It’s a time when homes may sit on the market a little longer and prices may adjust. It’s a time when multiple offers and bidding wars still exist, but they are rare. It’s a market where a buyer who wants to keep some common sense contingencies in place for inspections and investigation, can usually do so. In some rare cases, a buyer may even get their offer accepted with a contingency for selling another home first. Best of all, there may be times when inventory of homes for sale is up, providing a better selection of homes to choose from. While it’s obvious that the cash buyer has an advantage, without the negative of a larger monthly home payment, all of the other advantages should be considered by the buyer who will be getting a loan, as well. Yes, the monthly payment will be higher with the higher interest rate. But let’s look at the advantages highlighted above, from the perspective of when interest rates drop. Homes often sell quickly, for higher prices and with multiple bidders. It may be challenging to be the successful bidder on the home that you want…and you may have to pay significantly more, to get it. If you end up needing to pay more for a home, your property taxes will also be higher, for the duration of the time that you own the home. If you’re bidding in a strong seller’s market, it may be challenging to get your offer accepted with contingencies that protect you and make the process easier and less stressful. If values go up and inventory of homes for sale goes down, you may not be able to find the type of home you really want, in your preferred location. Please don’t misunderstand. There are times when financing a home results in a payment that is simply too high for the borrower, even if a lender is willing to make the loan. That’s not what this is about. For the buyer who can safely afford the payment, but who wishes that rates were lower, it’s important to look at the flip side of opportunity. Waiting to buy also comes at a cost. It includes high rent payments that are forever gone, not having the tax benefits that come with homeownership, and in some cases it turns into a missed opportunity to buy now and build

equity. Be sure to do the math to compare the cost difference between the higher interest rate and a possibly higher purchase price in a year or two. If you’re not sure where to start, reach out to your preferred lender or REALTOR® to run the numbers for you. You may be surprised by the cost of waiting. If you buy and interest rates drop significantly in the future, you might choose to refinance and take advantage of lower rates, while enjoying the benefits of having bought when the rates were higher. Every home sale or purchase is unique. Please feel free to reach out to me at 925-964-5010 or via email at Lisa.Hopkins@Compass.com with questions or for a custom analysis and consultation. Even if you’re not planning to move, I’m happy to help by providing you with relevant data, enabling you to make a well informed decision. It’s never too early to start planning for success!

A look at the History of the Silicon Valley By Kallen Cooyar, SRVHS Student

S

ilicon Valley has become a constant in the history of California, it’s a place of legend, being the birthplace of Java, Apple, and more! But despite the trillions of dollars that have flowed in and out of the region over the years, one question remains, how did it come to be? The advent of Silicon Valley was due to a mix of multiple factors. For starters, much like the ancient cities of Alexandria and Persepolis, it sits at a crossroads of trade, and is near major educational institutions like Stanford that provide a high quality workforce. However the Military also played a major role in the emergence of Silicon Valley, as early investments by the Department of Defense also flowed cash into the local economy. This was initially due to bases like Moffett Airfield, which further contributed to the development of tech within the region through defense research. Moreover, the large supply of venture capitalists, funding, and lower business taxes made the US and specifically California extremely attractive for entrepreneurs. More specifically, the area had fewer non-compete clauses, meaning programmers and engineers were more likely to spread strategies, ideas, and techniques they learned as they moved around between companies. However a major event in Silicon Valley’s history was that of William Shockley moving from New Jersey to Mountain View in 1956. Shockley was the co-inventor of the first working transistor, meaning his work soon culminated in the Shockley Semiconductor Laboratory. Shockley was unique from other semiconductor researchers as he theorized silicon was more efficient than the germanium used by many others. As such, Shockley made the Shockley Diode, which used 3 elements and despite being more difficult to fabricate than a simple transistor, was far more technically capable. Yet his abusive management and negative behavior caused 8 engineers to leave and form Fairchild Semiconductor, while he ended his research on silicon transistors in 1957. Two of those initial employees from Fairchild (which is significant in its own right) founded Intel, being Robert Noyce and Gordon Moore. Although not being the direct origin, this silicon

usage is the basis for the name of Silicon Valley. Some early and significant companies from Silicon Valley include Sun Microsystems. Sun created a team called the Green Team, led by James Gosling, which in turn created what was once known as Oak, but is now Java, one of the most widely used and classic programming languages. Others include HP, NVIDIA, Cisco Systems, Google, OpenAI, and Netflix. Briefly, things coming from or being heavily influenced by Silicon Valley include computer culture, the early internet, banking, venture capital, software, modern internet, smartphones, and more! Sometimes Silicon Valley seems to be the place of legend, somewhere untouchable and incomprehensible because of the history and the sheer volume of cultural significance it holds and grows by each year. But never forget, Palo Alto, Santa Clara, and Mountain View are all just about an hour away from Danville. So, some time you should visit the Tech Interactive, or the Intel Museum, or even Moffett Field! Kallen Cooyar is a senior at San Ramon Valley High School. He enjoys sports, and spending time reading. He is the president of the Persian heritage club and a member of the personal finance club. He plays football and is an avid stock investor . He is thrilled with the opportunity to share his views on contemporary events with his neighborhood through Danville Living CA.

Danville’s Chromatica turns 15 years old! By Chris Kenber, Westside Danville resident since 2011

F

ounded in Danville in 2011 by David Huff and Chris Kenber with 8 singers, Chromatica is an adult chorus of men and women performing a unique blend of classical, modern and contemporary music that distinguishes it from other community choruses. Now numbering 32 singers, it has performed three exclusive commissions – the most recent, Grammy-winning Christopher Tin’s Transfigurations, was performed in Santa Fe New Mexico in January this year. Chromatica in concert in Santa Fe New Mexico – January 2026 David Huff, Chromatica’s music director has programmed music from the 12th to the 21st century in many different languages and genres – Latin, French, Italian, Spanish, German, Russian and others (English too!) Where else would you hear everything from Twist and Shout to grand opera to 12th century Gregorian chant? Singers have been attracted to Chromatica by the quality and variety of the music and David Huff’s extraordinary direction. Early in its existence, Chromatica was also fortunate enough to attract Julie Rieth, an exceptional accompanist and solo pianist who has added incredible value to the chorus. Chromatica is now working on the commission of a major choral and instrumental piece by a nationally known composer. It also plans to travel to London and other UK locations in spring 2028. Offering two seasons of concerts every year (with a brief pause during

the pandemic) Chromatica will perform “Our Journey Home” the first of two 15th anniversary concert series at 3pm on November 7 at Holy Shepherd Lutheran Church, 433 Moraga Way in Orinda, and at 7pm April 25 at Peace Lutheran Church, 3201 Camino Tassajara in Danville. The Danville concert will include Chromatica’s popular postconcert wine reception, which began with its first public performance. Chromatica’s early rehearsals were held in a children’s classroom at Peace Lutheran Church in Danville, and it remains the chorus’ preferred performance venue. Chromatica’s final 15th anniversary concerts will be performed in April 2027 and will include pieces that have delighted audiences and singers over the past 15 years. “It is astonishing to look back over the past 15 years and remember our beginnings with 8 singers. We have come a long way, and I’m immensely proud of what Chromatica has achieved. But I do believe this is only the beginning as we look towards our next major commission, and planned travel overseas in 2028,” says David Huff, a former operatic tenor at New York’s metropolitan opera. Entering the most exciting period of its history, Chromatica is keen to attract new singers in all voices. To schedule an audition or to be added to the email list, please contact Chromatica at Chromatica4You@ comcast.net. For more information and concert tickets, visit chromaticachorale.org.

Cooking Corner

The “9 to 5” Cocktail By Stephanie Seaberg, Resident since 2010 Like so many people, I have been mourning the loss of a great woman. Last month, we lost the multi-talented Dolly Parton too soon. She represented so much of what we all aspire to be in life; successful, driven, giving and kind. I once read somewhere, “Don’t ever meet your heroes unless your hero is Dolly Parton.” Ain’t that the truth? Traditionally, I would publish a pumpkin recipe for the month of October. However, it seems apt that I would pay my respects to a woman who not only gave us great music and great movies, but also some life changing charities, like the Imagination Library. And fun fact! She wrote two cookbooks. I’ve been taking the time this month to watch some of her films and read her books to find inspiration for this month’s recipe. So, I decided on a hot blended cocktail. Coffee to highlight her greatest film (9 to 5) and a nod to her southern roots (coconut cake). It’s a warm, nutty and toasty drink to get you through the chilly autumn nights ahead. So, go ahead and pour yourself a cup of ambition. You deserve it. And, like the great Dolly said, she will always love you. Please consider checking out Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. https:// imaginationlibrary.com/ when you have time.

FOR THE COCKTAIL; •

8 ounces hot fresh coffee

•

1 ounce coconut rum

•

2 teaspoons Torrini coconut syrup

•

cream, milk, or half-and-half of your choosing for the whipped cream

•

Toasted coconut flake for garnish

•

2 teaspoons baking soda

•

2 cups oatmeal

•

3/4 cup chopped pecan

In a large coffee cup, combine the coffee, coconut rum, coconut syrup, and cream until well combined. Top with whipped cream and toasted coconut. Serve hot.

Day Trips and Getaways

Davis – Rising Star in Culture and Education By Ted Johnson, Resident since 1991, Photos by by Dan Schultz The glade and creek in the middle of the Davis campus

T

hanks to installing bike lanes in 1967, Davis is well known as the “Bicycle Capital of America,” Indeed, this is a flat city in the middle of the Sacramento Valley with a quite common grid layout. With the youthful population of about 28,000 undergrads at UC Davis, cycling has become the most popular means for successful experiences. Many in our community are familiar due to countless Danville residents being either alumni or students. But as a Berkeley grad, it’s easy to denigrate this campus that opened in 1908 as the “University Farm.” There is no denying UC Davis has played a critical role in developing California’s vast, rich agricultural offerings. In the late 1800s, UC soil scientists led the foundational research that showed farmers how to remove salts from the alkali soils in the Central Valley, transforming barren land into one of the world’s most productive farming regions. And there would be no California wine industry if

UC researchers had not helped resurrect vineyards after Prohibition nearly destroyed it. Naturally, its school of horticulture and agricultural sciences are the best in the country. There are decorative gardens throughout and the modern artist Robert Arneson dotted the campus with his “Egghead” sculptures. And like Berkeley, there is a redwood grove and a creek running through central campus. The central campus does indeed lack the classic 19th century architecture that dominates the Berkeley and Los Angeles campuses. But the UC Davis schools in management, medical, law and the sciences create a community laden with students, professors and researchers from around the world. And they don’t have to travel far to sample some world cultures. The impressive Robert Mondavi Performance Arts Center brings in major musical, theatrical and cultural events from around the world. The stunning Shrem Manetti Museum has been honored as one of the best museum buildings in the last 100 years. Want to “enhance your understanding of wine, brewing, and food sciences?” There’s the Mondavi Institute for Wine and Food Science. Off campus, you’ll find a community of wide pathways and greenbelts popular with cyclists, runners and walkers. Downtown is the quaint college-vibe of bookstores, coffee shops, and brew pubs. But when it comes to dining, you can try Burgers and Brew, but there’s also Mustard Seed, a traditional steakhouse resplendent in mid-20th century décor – a gentle throwback. And like all California college towns, there’s always good Mexican food, and Guadalajara Taqueria is first rate.

From Fire Season to Storm Season: Prepare Your Trees Now By Alisa Scribner, Operations Manager

A

s summer begins to wind down in the Danville area, it’s easy to start thinking ahead to cooler weather, rain and the holidays. But for your trees, this time of year is an important transition period. Fire season isn’t over yet, and winter storms are right around the corner. Early fall is a great time to walk your property, take a closer look at your trees and address potential problems before the weather changes.

Fire Safety Still Matters

Even as temperatures begin to cool, dry vegetation, dead branches and accumulated debris can continue to create a fire hazard around your home. Removing deadwood, clearing excessive debris and properly maintaining trees can help reduce available fuel around your property. Trees growing close to structures, roofs, driveways and other high-use areas should also be evaluated for dead, damaged or weak branches. Proper tree care doesn’t mean stripping or excessively thinning a tree. In fact, over-pruning can weaken trees and create additional problems. The goal is to maintain healthy, structurally sound trees while reducing unnecessary hazards. Get Ready for Winter Before the First Big Storm Our first major winter storm has a way of exposing tree problems that were easy to overlook during the summer. Heavy rain and strong winds can put tremendous stress on trees, especially those with: •

Dead or broken branches

•

Heavy or unbalanced canopies

•

Cracks or weak branch unions

•

Previous storm damage

•

Root or soil problems

•

Branches growing over roofs, vehicles or other structures

Taking care of these concerns before

winter weather arrives can help reduce the chance of unexpected tree or limb failures during a storm.

Some Tree Work Is Best Done in the Cooler Months

Fall and winter can also be an ideal time to plan certain types of pruning. Depending on the species, dormant-season pruning can improve structure, remove dead or damaged wood and prepare trees for healthy spring growth. Every tree is different, which is why having a knowledgeable tree professional evaluate your property can help determine what actually needs attention — and, just as importantly, what should be left alone.

A Little Prevention Goes a Long Way

Healthy, well-maintained trees add tremendous beauty and value to our Danville properties. They provide shade, privacy and character, and many have been growing in our neighborhoods for decades. Taking care of them before winter doesn’t just make your property look better. It can help protect your trees, your home and the people around them. Now is a great time to prepare for winter while continuing to stay fire-conscious. Don’t wait until the first big wind and rain event to discover that a tree needed attention. Terry’s Tree Service has been serving homeowners throughout Danville and the surrounding communities since 2007. Our experienced team and ISA Certified Arborists can evaluate your trees, identify potential concerns and recommend the appropriate care for your property.
