graduating from Indiana University. He began his career at PricewaterhouseCoopers and later founded his own company in military defense technology, now of growing global significance. Gina spent her early childhood in San Ramon before moving to Danville in seventh grade, where she attended Charlotte Wood and San Ramon Valley High School. She began college at Arizona State University, but after surviving a life-threatening car accident, she returned home to the Bay Area and completed her degree at Saint Mary’s College—guided, as she believes, by God’s greater plan. While in college, Gina survived a catastrophic car accident that changed the course of her life. She was rear-ended at high speed by a rental car that failed to brake as traffic slowed on I-5, sending her 1997 convertible Cabriolet off a 90-foot embankment. The car flipped multiple times, and Gina was ejected, sustaining lifethreatening injuries—most critically severe trauma to her larynx. She would ultimately undergo more than 20 reconstructive surgeries to restore her airway and voice.

rett and Gina’s story began during their freshman year at San Ramon Valley High School, when one dance and a simple question—“Will you be my girlfriend?”—sparked a love that would shape a lifetime. What started as a teenage romance grew into a partnership neither could have imagined that night. Twenty-eight years later, Brett and Gina are still deeply in love—married, raising a beautiful family, and building a life together on the very same street where their journey continues, fittingly named Love Lane. Their life together has included both joyful milestones and profound challenges, all rooted in a love they believe was meant to be and made in the image of God. Brett grew up on the westside of Danville, attending Montair Elementary, Stone Valley Middle School, and San Ramon Valley High School before

One of the most extraordinary moments surrounding the accident occurred the night before. While visiting a friend in Los Angeles, Gina called Brett to catch up—something they regularly did during college breaks, long before texting or social media. During that call, they realized they would both be driving I-5 the next day and made plans to meet briefly at the Grapevine. Unknowingly, Brett would be the last person Gina saw before the accident. Because communication was far less immediate at the time, Brett would not learn the full extent of what had happened for months. Gina credits her survival, including two profound out-of-body experiences, to faith and divine protection—an event that ultimately brought her home to the Bay Area and reshaped her future. God’s hand was always guiding and protecting Gina. Despite initially losing her voice, she began her career at PricewaterhouseCoopers, then felt a calling to healthcare. She went on to earn a Master’s degree in Clinical Nurse Leadership and her RN license from the University of San Francisco. Gina worked for several years in a step-down trauma unit at San Francisco General/Zuckerberg Hospital and now continues her nursing practice at a local plastic surgery office while raising their children. After marrying, Brett and Gina’s life together unfolded across the Bay Area—renting a cottage in Diablo, purchasing a townhouse in Walnut Creek, and living in San Francisco for five years—before returning home to build their dream house on Love Lane in 2014. They are grateful to be seed investors and active supporters of One Hope Winery, where their involvement helps fund charitable initiatives providing essential school supplies to under-resourced K–12 classrooms across the country, among other causes. Through prayer and reflection, Brett and Gina became members of the Catholic Church in April 2025. They believe this step has brought deeper meaning and connection to their family and community, and they strive to live each day in acknowledging all the grace and mercy God has shown and provided them, even before they were baptized. The Cummings family is filled with life and energy, having three busy children, who all attend St. Isidore School. Brayden, in 7th grade, is a math wizard and spends a lot of time in the neighborhood with his closest friends. He is also quite the athlete! This past year he played quarterback for his T-Bird football team, is the Goal Keeper on his ECNL Soccer Team with consistent invitations to train with the PDP team and continues to play year-round baseball for his EJ Travel Baseball team. Addy, in 5th grade, also shares her love of math and art as her favorite subjects in school. She spends much of her free time practicing her passion for dance at Next Step Dance Studio and tumbling at Nor-Cal with coach Izzy. This year Addy was invited to Nationals at the Hollywood Connection National Dance Competition and won the FAME award and is now represented by The Movement

was in. When Gina ran down the cliff a large feminine presence was standing over Addy’s body on the ground. The woman spoke to Gina saying very directly, “She is mine, stop worrying about her.” She woke up and was in tears but had comfort that all would be well. Coincidently (or not), the next two weekends Addy would be invited to National Finals by two different Dance conventions, never having been recognized before, and go on to win the FAME award at Hollywood Connection. Mary’s protection and God’s grace are very real and tangible to their family. When Addy has a free moment, she loves choreographing dances on her own, tumbling, doodling, indoor trampoline parks and being at her Grandma’s house. Talent Agency and has entered the world of commercial dance representation. The whole family feels that their Catholic Faith and Mary has interceded for Addy to offer her this amazing opportunity. While Brett and Gina were in DC looking for homes and schools, Gina took a photo of a statue of Mary at one of the Catholic schools they had been touring. That evening Mary came to Gina in her dream, Gina had a dream that Addy had been in the same car accident she

Sweet Kindergartener, Bodhi, also plays baseball, flag football, soccer, and loves being at Grandma’s house too. But most importantly he looks up to his big brother, Brayden, and Addy and all of their great St Isidore friendships they’ve made. He too is finding his friendship roots in Kindergarten at SIS. To round out the Cummings family, you can find 9-month-old Golden Retriever litter-mates, Zoe and Poppy, tagging along on walks, sporting events, car rides and all the other family activities that are on the calendar.

Brett and Gina feel lucky to have been able to raise their own family just down the street from where they first met. Both of their families still live in Danville, and it’s exciting to be able to continue family traditions and pass them down to their own children. The Cummings enjoy their home tucked away on Love Lane, just secluded enough to be nestled on the mountainside of Las Trampas, but close enough to walk to downtown. Even though there have been opportunities to move elsewhere (even potentially DC last year), Brett and Gina “couldn’t fathom leaving Danville and its ‘quintessential hometown feel.’” Spending time together, traveling during school and holiday breaks, is always a priority. This winter they will be in the Caribbean, and try to sneak off to Los Angeles, Hawaii, The Hamptons and will travel to Europe this summer. Even though the family vacations are a treat, it’s a blessing to always come back home to Danville. The Cummings family motto they hope to pass onto their children, and by default, their community, is one we can all hope to practice…”Be yourself. Do good. Honor God—and everything else will follow.”

From Applications to Aspirations: How Parents Can Reset in the New Year By Christina Dalton, MS, PPS, PCC, EYH Life Coach

he final “Submit” button has been clicked. The essays are finished, the supplements uploaded, and your teen has finally exhaled after months of college applications. Around Danville, that collective sigh of relief is almost audible — from kitchen tables cleared of drafts and deadlines to coffee shops where parents can finally sit and just breathe. But as winter settles into the San Ramon Valley, another realization often follows: Now what? For many parents, the rush of helping a child reach this milestone is followed by a quiet sense of transition — a mix of pride, relief, and uncertainty about what comes next.

The Post-Application Pause

For years, your life has revolved around your child’s schedule — practices, test prep, campus visits, and late-night essay reviews. Suddenly, that focus shifts. Your child’s next chapter is beginning, and so, in many ways, yours is too. As I often remind parents in my coaching sessions: “Parents spend so much time revolving around their children, their children’s friends, and family that oftentimes they lose themselves in the shuffle. It is OK to say now: What about me?” January is the perfect time to ask that question honestly. The world is focused on resolutions, but for many parents, this season is about rediscovery — a chance to redefine who you are beyond being someone’s mom or dad.

The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Real Estate By Lisa Hopkins-Cochran, REALTOR® at Compass

rtificial intelligence has been used in Real Estate for the past two decades, primarily with the use of computer generated property valuations. Consumers have grown accustomed to looking at these valuations which in some cases are very accurate, but many times, they’re not. Now we’re seeing the use of AI increase by leaps and bounds, in ways that we never would have dreamed were possible. The use of property descriptions written by AI started becoming common a couple of years ago. While it’s been nice to see descriptions that do not include typos, grammar and spelling errors, I’m not sure that we should call this progress. Why? A few of my recent “buyer” clients have commented to me that they don’t read the property descriptions anymore! They’ve shared that with so many real estate agents using AI to write for them, the descriptions all sound amazing…and very similar. After falling for the first few irresistible home descriptions, with a disappointing reality, they no longer trust the descriptions. In addition, some agents are not taking the time to fact check the descriptions! All too often, the AI writer makes attempts to create a more exciting description, by adding home features that don’t exist. I’ve gone to look at houses that supposedly had a swimming pool, a great view or a brand new kitchen…only to discover that these were errors and the features did not exist.

Misinformation can go even deeper. I’ve recently encountered several companies that sell tools to Realtors® to use in marketing their business, which heavily use AI to create the content, yet that fact is not disclosed. The result can be beautiful, very impressive looking websites, blogs or mailing pieces that are filled with bad data. Please don’t misunderstand. There is a lot of value that can be obtained through the thoughtful and careful use of artificial intelligence. Using AI for note taking, statistical research (with verified sources) and formatting are just some of the ways that I’ve found to improve the services I offer to my clients. Proof reading and fact checking are essential to the responsible use of this technology. It’s a step that requires the time and attention of a human being who is experienced and knowledgeable on the subject matter. In summary, Home Buyers and Sellers should question the real estate data that they read and verify that it is coming from a trusted source. New Year’s Day Around the World By Kallen Cooyar, SRVHS Student

t’s the day that marks the beginning of a new year and the limitless possibilities that come with the 365-day cycle of our calendar, so naturally, we humans celebrate it to varying degrees and forms! Here are some of the most interesting ways New Year’s is celebrated around the world. Starting in Spain, when the clock strikes twelve on December 31st, many eat twelve grapes, or as the tradition is called, “Las Doce Uvas”. The goal is to bring good luck for the coming year. The tradition originated around 1895, but became extremely popular in 1909 as an overproduction of grapes caused vineyards to push this tradition to minimize losses. In Romania, people dress up as bears for New Year’s. No, that isn’t a typo! Additionally, these suits are often genuine bear skins and family heirlooms. The tradition is officially named Festivalul de Datini și Obiceiuri Strămoșești, which entails the participants dancing in the streets and a “Bear Tamer” using a knife to cut out any “demons” within the bear. It is thought the tradition dates back to Roman times, when real bears were brought to the town on leashes to scare away

evil spirits. Some variations of the tradition see the bear tamer and the bear walking through the streets and going up to each household as the bear dances (almost like Halloween). Brazilians celebrate a similar tradition to “Las Doce Uvas”, but instead it involves jumping over 7 waves at midnight, also for good luck. This tradition often takes place at beaches like the Copacabana. It’s also intended to honor Iemanjá, the goddess of the sea and protector of fishermen in Afro-Brazilian religions (more specifically, Candomblé), who is often depicted as a mermaid. The symbolism of this tradition runs deep throughout it, with a focus on the fact that waves are unavoidable and that life is about learning to go with the flow. In Colombia, there’s a tradition that symbolizes travel, adventure, and good fortune, and it’s about suitcases! It’s called “Darle la vuelta a la manzana”, in which people grab their suitcases, whether packed or empty, and at midnight, run around the block while toting the suitcase behind them. It’s believed to guarantee a year of new destinations, travels, and, as most New Year’s traditions do, good luck. Some add money, or even beans, to the pockets of the suitcase in the hopes of granting a boon to the luck of the tradition. With 2025 in the rearview mirror and the start of a new year, I can’t help but wonder what’s to come, and with all these traditions, you’re sure to have no shortage of luck, adventure, and travel-even if you have to eat a few grapes, jump over some waves, or even dress up as a bear!

New Year’s Lasagna By Stephanie Seaberg, Resident since 2010 It’s a new year! And that means a new way of making lasagna. I was cleaning out my refrigerator last week when I realized I had all the ingredients to make a nice lasagna. Or should I say a super lasagna! It was one part creamy, one part meaty, and finished with a beautiful vodka sauce. The flavor explosion had me going back for seconds, and grateful that we had leftovers for lunch the next day. But don’t let the ingredient list scare you. You have a lot of the material in your kitchen already. There’s also a fair amount of vegetables hidden in this lasagna in case you have picky eaters. So, if you’re looking for a Sunday meal that keeps you warm through this extra cold winter, get started on this delicious lasagna recipe. And Happy New Year!

YOU WILL NEED; MEAT FILLING

1/2 pound of ground beef

•

2 Italian sausage links, casing removed

•

1 TBS olive oil

•

1 1/2 cups of finally diced onions, celery carrot (use a cheese grater to get your vegetables really fine) 4 cloves, minced garlic

1 cup of cooked spinach, drained of excess water

1/3 cup finely chopped parsley

1 box of ready to bake lasagna sheets

2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

Salt and pepper to taste

PUTTING IT TOGETHER; I suggest if you have two medium size pots, you can make the vodka sauce and the meat sauce at the same time. For the meat sauce, brown the ground beef and sausage until it’s no longer pink. Set it aside on a plate Using the same pot, add olive oil and sauté the celery, onion and carrots on medium heat until soft. About five minutes. Add the garlic, Italian seasoning and rosemary and cook for one minute. Then add the tomato, tomato paste, water, paprika and red pepper flakes. Season with salt and pepper. Bring the sauce to a boil, then down to a simmer. Cover and cook for one hour. While that cooks, get started on the vodka sauce. In a medium size pan, sauté the onions until they’re soft. Then add the garlic and cook for one minute. Add the vodka and cook for one minute. Add the tomato sauce, and season with salt and pepper. Bring it to a boil, than down to a simmer, cover and cook for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, stir in the cream and Parmesan cheese. In a medium size bowl, mix the ricotta, spinach, egg, parsley and Parmesan until well combined. Preheat the oven to 350°. Using a greased 9 x 13 baking dish, spoon a thin layer of vodka sauce on the bottom of the dish. Next, lay down a layer of the oven ready lasagna noodles. Then spread a layer of ricotta cheese mixture over the lasagna. After that, spoon over a layer of meat sauce, followed by a drizzle of vodka sauce and a handful of mozzarella cheese. Start all over again with another layer of lasagna noodles and repeat the process until the dish is full. The very top of the lasagna should have a layer of lasagna noodles, covered in vodka sauce, and the rest of the mozzarella cheese. Cover with foil and bake in a preheated 350° oven for 45 minutes. Then uncover and bake for an additional 15 minutes. Let the lasagna rest for at least 20 minutes before cutting into it. If you have any leftover vodka sauce, I recommend drizzling it over each individual slice to make it extra special.

Gualala & Sea Ranch – The North Coast’s Trip Back in Time By Ted Johnson, Resident since 1991

s we travel we are in constant contact with our state’s Spanish heritage. However, there is another foreign influence in our past, often overlooked: Russian traders. More specifically, native Siberians known as the Sakha. Russians brought them to the North Coast where at least 16 Sakha lived at Fort Ross from 1812-1842. Russians depended on them for their excellent hunting, carpenter and even shipbuilding skills. This element of our complex history can be seen just south of the small coastal town of Gualala. Nestled on the bluffs where the Gualala River runs into the ocean, the Gualala Regional Park has the Sakha shrine. Getting to Gualala is about a three-hour drive through Marin and Sonoma counties. Depending on the routes, you can pass through some of the state’s most bucolic farm land and open space before getting to the coast in Bodega Bay. En route, you’ll sense small towns like Valley Forge, Jenner and Timber Cove almost screaming at you to check out a coffee shop, grocery store or roadside restaurant. North of Jenner sits Fort Ross, now a California and National Historical Landmark, which in the early 19th century was the hub of the southernmost Russian settlements. Many Sakha lived here, but it was a hub of ethnic groups that included Native Californians, Native Alaskans, Russians, Finns and Swedes. The drive on Highway 1 from Bodega Bay into Gualala – on a clear day – can give Big Sur a run for its rank as having the state’s most stunning coastal views. From Bodega to Gualala, however, the White Knuckle time on the steering wheel can get pretty intense.

Deep drop-offs on sheer hillsides are managed on roads that offer very little room for maneuvering. And the scenery almost demands you look. That’s why on a 30-mile stretch from Jenner north most cars average about 30 mph. What you get upon arrival in Gualala is an old lumber town of about 2,000 with a back-in-time feel. The only sign of a national chain is the Chevron gas station. There are hiking trails, regional parks near and off the ocean, plenty of hotel rooms, and at least two first-rate restaurants – St. Orres to the north and the Sea Ranch Lodge about nine miles south. A controversial development initiated in the 1960s, the Sea Ranch project led to the creation of the California Coastal Commission. Now it is a 10-mile long community noted for its private roads, homes clad in natural wood set back off the bluffs, winding trails, horse stables and even a landing strip for private planes. The Sea Ranch Lodge ranks as one of the most compelling visual spots in the country for “panoramic views of meadows, cliffs, and the endless Pacific.”

Walking the Coastal Access trails near the Lodge or just about anywhere near Gualala can bring on the feeling of another era. Traversing open spaces with great views and then winding through low-hanging cypress trees, especially in the fog as fogdogs come and go can bring on a feeling of being in a Jane Eyre novel. There are plenty of cutoffs and roads offering access to the bluffs and the Pacific. On one beach, one woman was picking through the thousands of rocks to find additions for her fish tank. Others scoured the banks for driftwood that could be turned into home decorations. It is a remote region, but one worth the time and the drive; a place where the congestion and stress of the Bay Area disappears, making it another reason why there’s no place like Northern California.
