Hello Neighbors! Although it’s a month of transition and new beginnings, August is one of my favorite time of the year. After the crazy summer schedules start to wind down, our family loves to take advantage vacationing to new destinations during the month of August. It’s the perfect family time right before everyone heads back to school and back to work. Even with the regimen of everyone returning to more regular schedules, the days continue to feel like summer, with evening swimming, BBQ’s with friends and grilling season still in full swing! The Selway family has long ties to the East Bay, and finding their perfect home on the westside has been a dream come true. You will love reading their story and all the joy and community they bring to our town. Our August issue also has a great collection of expert articles, community content, and a day trip to wine county for you to enjoy.

Resident Feature Automation, then eventually joining the family business, Selway Machine Tool Company. Since 2022, Andy has had the honor and responsibility of being the President of the Selway Machine Tool Company, now the largest machine tool distributor on the West Coast United States. In Andy’s free time, he has mastered the profession of driving children to and from their sports and activities. When he’s not coaching one of his kids’ teams (he’s up for any sport, and any team!), Andy can be found cooking on his smoker or putting together Catherine’s furniture/project deliveries that (sometimes) show up on the front porch. While they did not know each other as children, Catherine also lived in Walnut Creek until 4th grade when her family moved to Dubai for two exciting years for her father’s job. After that time, Catherine’s parents settled down in Alamo, where they still reside.

lthough neither Andy nor Catherine had met in person, their families knew one another growing up and it was not until a lucky Easter Break in Palm Desert when they would finally cross paths. After a stressful semester studying for her last final exam in nursing school, Catherine hopped on a plane to meet up with her family for the week at the JW Marriott Desert Springs. Andy was also staying at his family’s condo and as soon as Catherine walked by, his mom noticed his wandering eye, quietly telling him “don’t even think about it, she’s a nice girl.” After dinner at the famous Costas nightclub, “sparks flew on the dance floor” and they exchanged numbers before each of them traveled back home. It didn’t take long before seeing each other again, which happened to be the same night of Catherine’s nursing school pinning ceremony. They had their first official date at Va da Vi in Walnut Creek. Since that night, Catherine and Andy have been inseparable, getting engaged by Christmas in 2009, then married in November of 2010. Both Andy and Catherine are East Bay natives, born at John Muir Hospital, just ten years apart! Raised in Concord until he was 12, Andy then moved to Walnut Creek to the same home his parents live in to this day. After high school, Andy attended Arizona State University, receiving a degree in Business Administration (and not to be forgotten, was also the Vice President of his Fraternity, Sigma Nu). Andy’s first job after graduation was as a Sales Associate at Hass 8

After enrolling in the St. Mary’s “two plus two” nursing program, Catherine received her associates degree from St. Mary’s College, followed by her BS in Nursing from Samuel Merritt College in Oakland. Her first job was at an outpatient chemotherapy infusion center in Pleasant Hill, coincidentally the same facility her grandmother was receiving treatment. After a brief stint as a nurse with Hospice of the East Bay, Catherine became pregnant with their first child and quickly realized her “real dream” was being able to stay home and raise her family. Over the years she has had a variety of small endeavors - food delivery service, interior decorating, party planning, house flipping, and her latest, becoming a “pretend influencer” (as the kids would say)...”Curious Catherine.” Her Instagram page is a culmination of all her interests where she shares her tips and tricks for house hacks, food and drink recipes, fun projects, and anything that makes parenting and life easier. Even though it started out as a joke between friends, it has turned into quite the social media sensation, and she is excited to see where it goes! Catherine also loves volunteering her time and talents to St. Isidore School and Church by being the Co-Chair for their annual Sip-n-Shop event and helping connect local vendors to participate in the annual Old World Christmas Market. All three Selway children can be found riding their bikes to practice for the Del Amigo Swim Team each summer morning. It’s a great way to start their day, and the rest of the day “becomes an adventure for them” while the neighborhood kids often end up at their house in the afternoons. Lila will be starting 8th grade at St. Isidore School this year and plays softball for the Stompers. She also keeps busy cheering competitively for NorCal Elites. Cheering is her best talent and it all began when she taught herself how to tumble (flips, round-offs) in AUGUST 2025

the backyard. Colin will be entering 7th grade and keeps busy playing basketball with Sports Strong, Flag Football with Next Level, and his favorite sport, Lacrosse. Playing for Danville Scorpions and ADVNC, Colin is loving all the sport has to offer, even recently being able to play in a tournament in Maryland, known to be the Lacrosse capital of the USA. Rounding out the last middle schooler in the family, Sammy will be entering 6th grade this school year. He loves playing Mustang Soccer, Lakeshow Basketball, Next Level Flag Football, and his favorite sport, Rugby with Danville Oaks. Sammy can also be found playing with “Spike”, his pet Leopard Gecko. He is sure to keep a close eye on Spike, as he is “NOT allowed outside of Sam’s room.” Perhaps Melly the cat has her eye on Spike as well, since she serves as the house “pest control,” sometimes delivering gifts like a large bird she caught and displayed on the living room rug. She is a small but mighty feline princess that fits perfectly into the Selway household. While the family is quite busy these days with children’s activities and sports, one vacation they will never miss is spending Easter Break in Palm Springs…staying in the same place Andy and Catherine met. Now their own family has been making memories together for over 12 years and know they will continue to do so in the future.

Raising children that are both kind and driven is a goal Andy and Catherine strive for. Their family is one that is rooted in openness and being close with one another. They hope to provide an example in their nuclear family that will extend beyond to their larger family and friends in the community. The Selways believe that “at the end of the day, it comes down to the people and community” you surround yourself with. As longtime Danville/Alamo residents, Andy and Catherine always had their eye on moving into the Del Amigo neighborhood. Once their children started to become more independent, they knew the location would be a perfect fit for their family. They have lived in their Del Amigo home for about a year and a half now, and it has allowed their entire family access to walking to school, downtown, the Iron Horse Trail and the beauty of Las Trampas.

those owners had a very similar philosophy of an “open home” that all the kids in the neighborhood liked to gravitate to at the end of the day. A week does not go by that a neighbor does not stop by the house to share a fun memory they had over the years at their home. Creating a welcoming and warm home that is open to their kids’ friends is a priority for the Selway family. It is quite common for the house to be filled with 10-20 kids when Andy comes home from work. Catherine is known for having snacks on hand and all the friends enjoying the pool, spa, trampoline, basketball or watching a movie in the “secret room.” The Selway family is happy to keep the neighborhood tradition alive by being a “busy and fun house for many years to come.”

The Selway family believes their neighborhood is “truly a place that takes you a step back in time”…kids meeting up, exploring, fishing, biking…plus friendly neighbors walking their dogs and stopping by to say hello. In fact, once they moved into their home, they quickly learned their house had a long standing tradition within the neighborhood. Andy and Catherine bought the house from the original owners who raised their children there, and they have learned that

The Liminal Month:

Why August Is the Perfect Time to Embrace Life’s Subtle Transitions By Christina Dalton, MS, PPS, PCC, EYH Life Coach

A

ugust is weird.

It’s not the carefree joyride of June or July, when the world smells like sunscreen and grilled hot dogs. But it’s not quite September either, when calendars fill, emails multiply, and pumpkin spice invades every corner of American life. August is a liminal space—a holding zone between what was and what’s coming next. It’s also the month where time feels both expansive and slightly itchy. The kids are either leaving for college, returning home from internships, or inexplicably still in your house but consuming twice as many groceries. Work slows down just enough to feel guilty for not being more productive, and suddenly you’re reorganizing closets and questioning your life choices while holding a box labeled “Misc – 2007.” August, in all its in-between-ness, is an invitation. Not to hustle, not to finalize, not to start Whole30 (again), but to pause. That’s right. Pause. This is the month to reflect on the subtle transitions that often go unnoticed: the shift in who we’re becoming, what we’re leaving behind, and how we want to move forward. These aren’t dramatic, Hollywood-style turning points. They’re quieter: the realization that your values have changed. The moment you decide not to rush. The choice to let go of things that no longer fit (figuratively—and let’s be honest, maybe literally). For many of us, August feels like standing in the hallway with doors closing behind us and others about to open. It’s uncomfortable. But it’s also sacred. So instead of rushing to “get back on track,” maybe this is

the year to embrace the off-track-ness of August. Maybe this is the month to sit with your coffee a little longer, make peace with a little uncertainty, and gently ask yourself: •

What is quietly shifting in my life right now?

•

What am I ready to release?

•

What wants to begin?

There’s no need to have the answers. That’s the whole point of a liminal space—you’re not there yet. And that’s okay. Because sometimes, growth doesn’t come in the form of big leaps. It comes in the in-between moments, the soft ones, the ones where nothing looks like it’s changing—until it does. So here’s to August. The most transitional, most awkward, most gloriously overlooked month of the year. Honor who you are this month. Allow yourself to wander through it slowly, questionably organized, and open to what’s next—even if it’s just figuring out where that “Misc – 2007” box actually belongs.

Christina Dalton is the Principal of EYH Life Coach. She applies her own personal and career transitions along with several degrees and credentials to provide insight and knowledge into the coaching experience. RETRAIN YOUR BODY, REWIRE YOUR BRAIN By Jennifer Ringenberg, Owner at The Exercise Coach

Introducing the Exerbotics Balance Tracker

ENTER THE EXERBOTICS BALANCE TRACKER™

At the Exercise Coach – San Ramon, we’ve always said, Strength Changes Everything, but now, we know it can do even more. The latest science reveals something remarkable: by combining strength training with balance and brain challenges, we can help you retrain your body and rewire your brain. The result? More stability. Sharper thinking. Greater confidence.

This revolutionary tool lets us assess your balance and cognitive function, then deliver targeted exercises that improve both at the same time. Here is how it works:

At its foundation, The Exercise Coach – San Ramon is strengthbased and health span focused. As we age, we naturally lose some of the strength and coordination that keep us safe and independent. Falls have become more common. Memory recall and quick thinking slow down. But that doesn’t mean decline is inevitable. Science now confirms: “use it or lose it” applies just as much to your brain and balance as to your muscles.

Train your “engine” – Strengthen the muscles of your feet, ankles and core to stay upright. Train your “control center” – Engage brain systems for coordination, memory and reaction time. Train your “integration systems” – Improve how your inner ear, vision, and body awareness work together.

BACKED BY SCIENCE. BUILT FOR YOU. Strength + Balance + Brain tasks = Neuroplasticity; your brain’s ability to adapt and improve.

12

AUGUST 2025

Strength and interval training release BDNF, a brainboosting protein that amplifies neuroplasticity. Studies show this training can preserve memory, slow cognitive decline, and sharpen spatial awareness and reaction time.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOU The Exerbotics Balance Tracker isn’t just about preventing falls. It’s about preserving your freedom – to think clearly, move confidently, and stay connected to what you love. Let’s fix that. Let’s Transform the way you age. This is Strength-evolved, this is balance and cognition-reclaimed.

The Lock-in Effect Is Easing, But Oh So Slowly By Matthew Forrey, Senior Vice President, Financial Advisor, Portfolio Manager – Portfolio Focus, Resident since 2010

T

he lock-in effect is a term that economists use to explain why the existing-home market has suffered from a severe lack of inventory in recent years. Homeowners have been discouraged from selling because they would have to finance their next homes at much higher rates than they pay on their current mortgages. Nearly two-thirds of outstanding mortgages had rates below 4% in the first quarter of 2022, after many homeowners grabbed the chance to refinance at historically low rates during the pandemic. The share of mortgages with very low rates has locked down since then, because some households want or need to sell regardless of interest rates, but it’s still much higher than before the pandemic. Although it’s possible that the lockin effect may linger for years to come, it could loosen its grip on the housing market more quickly if mortgage rates drop.

Is The Grass Greener Over There? By Lisa Hopkins-Cochran, REALTOR® at Compass

E

very now and then I allow myself to dream, looking at online pictures of homes in places that I’ve never even visited. The draw is usually a combination of lifestyle & affordability…perhaps a home with small acreage, on the water somewhere, at a price that won’t even get you a tear-down in Danville. Every time, as I ponder the possibilities, reality sets in. The high cost of real estate in our community isn’t just about our homes, it’s about the magic combination of convenient, quality services, together with our beautiful surroundings. So many of us originally moved to Danville because it had exceptional public schools, parks & recreation for our children, while also being commutable to so many employment hubs…as well as being strategically close to the coast, wine country & Lake Tahoe. Add in our mild climate and low crime rate, and you’ll start to remember why people are willing to pay so much for a home here. Fast forward 20 years and perhaps your children have left the nest and you may have the option to retire or work remotely. Here comes the temptation again! Perhaps it’s time to follow your dreams and move someplace beautiful, far, far away? If you’re thinking about a big change, be sure to also consider what your new dream home location may not have. The biggest thing that brings people back, after making a move to someplace more rural is quality, convenient medical care. While this is a bigger concern for our older population, it’s really a concern for everyone, at any age. Sometimes, fast, immediate care can make the difference between life and death. Even if it’s not life threatening, an unexpected medical concern can suddenly mean lots of follow up appointments. That’s a challenge in the best of circumstances imagine driving for hours to each appointment! Let’s admit it. We’re all pretty spoiled here when it comes to food. Whether you enjoy cooking and having access to a plethora of markets

for fresh ingredients, within minutes of home…or whether you like dining out and having an abundance of amazing options, not far from home, you’ll want to give this subject some thought. I’ll never forget visiting a relative who lives in a very (beautiful) remote area. I was informed that we needed to be sure to plan to go to the local grocery store on a specific day and time, because that is when the fresh produce for the week comes in — WOW! Needless to say, we went at the right time, and I was shocked by the very limited selection of options, in all departments. Access to great medical and food are not the only factors to consider. Unless you don’t plan to go anywhere, and you don’t plan to have anyone come to visit you in your new home, be sure to factor in the distance to an airport. As I’ve mentioned in previous articles, it’s really important to do your homework, before moving out of the area. Spend some time researching all aspects of your desired lifestyle that are important to you, as well as weather, insurability, property taxes & more. Pursuing your dream can be absolutely wonderful, as long as you make well thought out decisions to make sure that you will be happy in your new location. Every move and home sale is unique. Please feel free to reach out to me at 925-964-5010 or via email at Lisa.Hopkins@Compass.com with questions or for a custom analysis. Even if you’re not planning to move, I’m happy to help by providing you with relevant data, enabling you to make a well informed decision. It’s never too early to start planning for success.

SUPER STUFFED MUSHROOMS By Stephanie Seaberg, Resident since 2010 I’ve always been a fan of stuffed mushrooms. They’re elegant enough for a wedding and casual enough for a camping trip. I even have friends that don’t like mushrooms but love these stuffed mushrooms. What I love most about this dish is that they are hearty, herbaceous, and can be made the day before a party. People will think you spent hours on this beautiful hors d’oeuvre, but it really came together in 15 minutes.

YOU WILL NEED; • 10 large white button mushrooms (about the size of a golf ball) • 1/4 C. Italian Breadcrumbs • 2/3 C. Grated Parmesan cheese • 3-4 cloves of fresh garlic, minced • 1 Italian sausage (Hot or mild) • 1/4 C. Italian parsley, finely chopped • 2 tsp. Olive oil • Red pepper flake (optional) • Salt and pepper to taste • Balsamic glaze (I get mine at Trader Joe’s)

PUTTING IT TOGETHER; Preheat the oven to 375°. Remove the casing on the sausage and place it in a small skillet, breaking it up into small pieces. Brown the sausage on medium heat until it’s no longer pink. Remove the sausage to a medium size bowl to cool and set aside. Using a wet paper towel, gently wipe your mushrooms to remove excess dirt. Gently remove the stems of each mushroom, leaving an open cavity on each mushroom and set aside. Using a chef’s knife, trim and discard any tough or woody ends from the mushroom stems and give them a fine chop. Add the mushroom stems to the sausage bowl, then add the breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, parsley, garlic, salt, pepper, red pepper flake and olive oil. Mix until everything is well combined and add more olive oil if needed. It should have the consistency of wet sand. Using a teaspoon, generously stuff each mushroom cap with the filling (really pack it in there) and give it a round shape, so it doesn’t fall apart in the oven. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until golden brown (30 minutes if your mushrooms are extra large) Transfer to a serving dish and drizzle with balsamic glaze.

REMEMBER THE NAME By Ericka Jones

Sports history is packed with stories and legacies. Players and coaches come and go, some more memorable than others. In this saturated market of talent and fame, what makes someone truly memorable? Some leagues commemorate truly spectacular people by naming a championship trophy after them.

THE VINCE LOMBARDI TROPHY One of the most revered awards is the Vince Lombardi Trophy. No matter how you feel about the Green Bay Packers, it’s nearly impossible to be a football fan without knowing the name Vince Lombardi. Lombardi was born in 1913 in Brooklyn, New York. As a teenager, he studied to become a priest. When he realized that wasn’t his calling, he switched schools and played football as a fullback. Following high school, he attended Fordham University to play football, becoming one of the “Seven Blocks of Granite.” After graduation, he worked for a finance company while studying law in the evenings. He made his coaching debut as an assistant coach at St. Cecilia High School in New Jersey. After eight successful years, he returned to his alma mater to coach for two years. From there, he joined the coaching staff at West Point. His first NFL coaching job was as assistant coach for the New York Giants. After helping the Giants to five consecutive winning seasons, Lombardi left for Green Bay. At that time, the Packers were one of the worst teams in the league. Lombardi turned that around, leading the team to five NFL championships (including the first two Super Bowls). He briefly retired as a coach and became the Packers general manager. A few years later, he returned to the field as the Washington Redskins head coach, leading them to their first winning season in 14 years. Sadly, Lombardi was diagnosed with an aggressive form of colon cancer in June of 1970. He died in September of that year. In 1971, Lombardi was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The same year, the Super Bowl trophy was named in his honor. His inspirational wisdom and dedication to the sport live on.

THE STANLEY CUP We now switch over from cleats to skates. As the oldest championship trophy in North America, the Stanley Cup actually predates the league that awards it each year. Sir Frederick Arthur Stanley, Lord of Preston, is credited with the origin of this trophy. He was born into a family of nobles and followed in his father’s footsteps to join the world of politics. He served in Canada’s House of Commons, was appointed the Governor General of Canada, and later became the 16th Earl of Derby.

His love for hockey began in 1889 after seeing his first game at the Montreal Winter Carnival. To show his support, he donated an ornate trophy to the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association for the league’s winner. The Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup (as it was first named) was given to the Montreal Amateur Association team in 1893 after they won the challenger tournament, a playoff of sorts created specifically at the request of Stanley. Since those origins, the Stanley Cup has been awarded to many hockey teams. It became the official trophy for the NHL in 1926. The original cup was sent to the Hockey Hall Fame (where it’s currently displayed in the Vault Room). Since then, the modern Stanley Cup has been in rotation. Rather than create a new Cup every year, the names of the players, coaches and staff are written on the rings of the base. As the rings are filled with names, they can be removed and replaced with new rings. The filled rings are then sent to the Hockey Hall of Fame. As the only professional trophy that isn’t remade each year, the Cup has made many trips across both the United States and Canada (and even Europe).

LARRY O’BRIEN CHAMPIONSHIP TROPHY In basketball, teams compete to win the Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy. Despite being the namesake of the NBA trophy, O’Brien spent most of his career in politics. After graduating college with a law degree, he worked with several politicians, including John F. Kennedy and Hubert Humphrey. His legal work advanced legislation for the Peace Corps and Civil Rights. Eventually, he left the world of politics to become the NBA commissioner in 1975. In this role, O’Brien worked to merge the American Basketball Association with the NBA, mediated several collective bargaining agreements and arranged a television contract with CBS, which boosted viewership and increased revenue across the league. He also modified the college draft and created the NBA scholarship program. Under his leadership, the league added five teams and integrated the three-point shot into the game. In 1976, he was named The Sporting News “Sportsman of the Year.” When he left the NBA in 1984, the trophy was renamed to commemorate his contributions to the league. From 1985 to 1987, he also served as the president of the Basketball Hall of Fame. ** In Major League Baseball, the championship trophy doesn’t commemorate a specific player, coach or influencer. The Commissioner’s Trophy, with its 30 flags and gold-stitched baseball, is awarded by the Commissioner of Baseball to the winner of the World Series. This may all change someday, but only time will tell. DANVILLE LIVING CA 21

THE CA GRIZZLY LEGACY By Kallen Cooyar, SRVHS Student

F

rom the state flag to the Academy of Sciences, grizzly bears can be seen everywhere in California media. And as such, they have become practically synonymous with California. But here’s the twist, grizzly Bears don’t live in California, at least not anymore. Here’s why their legacy still over-bears. For millennia, grizzly bears were the apex predators of California. Fossils of grizzlies in California have been found in the La Brea Tar Pits, dating to 7500 years ago. They were often close to or over 1000 pounds and when standing on their hind legs were 8 feet tall. More importantly, they were estimated to have numbers in the tens of thousands while living for 20-30 years each. Even their taxonomic name is menacing, Ursus Arctos Horribilis, or terrifying bear. None of this mattered once humans arrived. After European colonists ran into the issue of grizzlies eating their livestock, they began hunting them ruthlessly. This continued into later centuries, even escalating to such a point that some settlers in California would capture grizzlies and bulls, forcing them to fight for entertainment. Although disproven, there is a legend that these pseudo-gladiator battles were the origin of the stock exchange terminology of Bearish and Bullish markets.Their Taxonomic name of Ursus Arctos Horribilis is inspired by the 1800s accounts of Lewis and Clark, describing the bears of America as “ferocious tyrants of the American woods.” In 1846, 33 Americans attempted to rebel against the Mexican state in California, setting up the Californian Republic or Bear Republic. They rebelled in response to an inability to purchase, rent, or lease land as well as threats of expulsion. They were also the first Californians to adopt the Bear to a flag. This is attributed to William L. Todd who made the flag used in the Bear Flag Revolt. In 1849 the bear became part of the official state seal. Soon after, in 1866 a record grizzly was hunted, supposedly weighing 2200 pounds. This was confirmed by multiple eye

witnesses and is considered one of the largest bears ever recorded. In August of 1922, the last Californian grizzly bear was killed. It was caught in Tulare County and as such, within 75 years of the discovery of gold in California, every grizzly bear was hunted. As for how the grizzly became the mascot of UC Berkeley, its first appearance was in 1895 during a 12 man track meet, which was the first Cal track team to attend an out of state competition. They carried banners with California’s state emblem, the grizzly bear, but in gold. This is the origin of the name “The Golden Bears”. After winning multiple events the grizzly became their mascot. Starting in 1930, live bear cubs were used as the school mascot. With one being raised by a group of students in Bowles Hall in 1933, who named him Oski, for a school chant of “Oski wow wo! Whiskey wee wee!”. But the club’s growth proved slightly too much to handle, and soon thereafter in 1940, William C. Rockwell donned the first Oski costume. Not long after that the Oski Committee was created to oversee Oski’s endeavors and protect him from rival teams. And from there, Oski simply became one of the most loved college mascots. Other colleges like UCLA and UC Riverside also use a bear as a mascot. There is one last Californian grizzly preserved at the Academy of Sciences. It’s a taxidermy bear named Monarch. In his life, he weighed 1100 pounds and was captured in 1889 in Ventura. Only to live in captivity for 22 years in places like the San Francisco Zoo. If you ever go to a Cal game or visit the campus, just think about the fact that a hundred years ago, there would have been a bear cub roaming around instead of a person in a suit. And if you look at the stock market just imagine the battles of the raging bulls and fearsome grizzlies. But most importantly, remember the dominance of the grizzlies, and their sad disappearance from the state. Let it serve as a warning tale for other species in need of protection. Kallen Cooyar is a junior at San Ramon Valley High School. He enjoys sports, and spending time reading. He is the president of the Persian heritage club and a member of the personal finance club. He plays football and is an avid stock investor . He is thrilled with the opportunity to share his views on contemporary events with his neighborhood through Danville Living CA.

Day Trips and Getaways

Healdsburg:

The Epicenter of Wine Country Haute Cuisine By Ted Johnson, Resident since 1991; Photos provided by Ted Johnson and Garrett Rowland

O

ut of all the possibilities for one-day “getaways” that bring wine and food together, Healdsburg offers the best experience that matches world-class wine with restaurant fare that will appeal to the most strident “foodie.” Some long-standing “wine heads” think the Napa Valley has become “adult Disneyland,” with reservations needed at most wineries to go with heavy weekend traffic. Healdsburg sits north of Santa Rosa in the middle of diverse appellations, with the Russian River and Dry Creek growing regions being the closest. It has a quaint, modern and very stylish downtown anchored by a classic square right out of a 1950s movie set: large trees, benches, a music stand and historical plaques. Ringed by boutiques, a book store, wine tasting bars and two ice creameries, the square offers a venture into the epicenter of Wine Country haute cuisine. There’s Guiso, a Spanish “fusion” restaurant known for its unique paella, and there are tasting lounges like Furthermore Wines and Portalupi and even a quaint bistro, Lagniappe. On the south side of the square is Matheson, another innovative, stylish restaurant that you may forget because its best feature is the Roof 106: The openair bar three stories above the square. A Modern Margarita there with clarified lime will make you want to stay indefinitely. The restaurant of world-renown is Single Thread Farm, a threestar Michelin restaurant that draws foodies the world over. Single Thread releases its reservation opportunities on the first of each month for the following month. Those who log-on a few minutes late find themselves having to wait a month for another try. Across the street is Valette, which has been recognized by Michelin guide for its unique,

California-oriented seasonal offerings. Valette isn’t quite as rigid when it comes to getting a table, to be sure. Its interior is gracefully lined with large paintings and artifacts, and the trendy bar is laden with the best local wines. The staff reeks of friendliness, and is well-educated on the features of all menu items. “It’s the connection to the original owners and the people who start the business,” said Aaron Garzini, one of the principals of Valette, on the cozy charm many sense immediately in Healdsburg. His brother Dustin Valette – yes, different names – and Aaron started the restaurant more than 10 years ago. Dustin also serves as the chef at Matheson on the other side of the square. “I’ve been working in this business since I was 16. When you eat here, or when you get into the tasting rooms, there’s a good chance you’ll meet some of the people who created the product,” said Garzini. Adding to the collegial feel is that many of those working in other restaurants and tasting rooms visit the businesses during off hours. It’s common for outsiders to sense “that everyone knows everyone,” is how Vanessa Sosa put it. She works at Guiso but was dining at Valette on the charcuterie plate. Personal touch? Both Aaron and Dustin checked on her and others, and then came their father asking patrons about their dinner, which included; Scallop en Croute (caviar on smoked sturgeon), foi gras with pickled shallots, and a scallop steamed in puff pastry. Add splashes of sauvignon blanc and Valette’s

own pinot noir. Haute it is. What holds Healdsburg back in the mind of the locals who want to sample the best of this lifestyle is distance; it’s about 95 miles away. It’s worth the drive if only to sample wine and delectable cuisine around a square that surely will be in a movie soon. Danville resident Ted Johnson has been a journalist for more than 40 years.
