FROM THE PRESIDENT... Greetings, Dance Enthusiasts! It’s that time of the year and here we go again: dancing snowflakes and companies from far and wide filling up the performance calendar. Check it out on pages 16 - 18. Coming up next on the Dance Council’s list of events is the eagerly anticipated Dallas Dance Film Festival Season 5. Entries have been received from all over the world, and the top ten will be showcased on November 16th at the Oak Cliff Society of Fine Arts-Turner House. Attendees will enjoy adult beverages and hors d’ouevres and select the winners. Tickets are available at the door, which opens at 7PM. New this year to Dance Council is the Open College Dance Audition, which gives area dance students the opportunity to be seen by institutions of higher learning from around the country. PACE University, TCU, University of North Carolina School of the Arts, Adelphi University, University of the Arts, Cornish College of the Arts, TWU, UTD, New Mexico State University, and Oklahoma City University will participate this year!

DCNT: What made you decide to start the South Dallas Dance Festival (SDDF)? LAB: I had heard about several companies and never seen them, so I decided to have them all together, putting their best foot forward and sharing! DCNT: How many years has it been active and has it changed over the years? LAB: The festival started in 2000, and has been stopped only by the pandemic in 2020. We used to do a Praise Dance showcase, but that is on hiatus at this time.
DCNT: When and why did SDDF change to the Sweatt Dallas Dance Festival? LAB: The name changed to honor Mary Lois Sweatt (19392016) who was on our board and made sure we got SDDF into our bylaws. And we were at Ann Richards Steam Academy in Pleasant Grove for a couple of years, so we were able to keep the SDDF initials. DCNT: There is a dance scholarship component attached to the festival. How does it fit in? LAB: We partner with the Dance Council Scholarship program to find the best Black/BIPOC dancer who applies. The recipient of the scholarship is required to dance at the SDDF. DCNT: Is there anything we need to know before attending the show? LAB: There are performances by several groups, including a Youth Dance Showcase, and our scholarship recipient will perform both evenings! There’s also a Master Class and a Roundtable!
