The Rillito River site is adorned with a multitude of varying environmental elements. The river gently flows within a vast dry river bed, beneath a lush ridge full of a wide range of native plants and trees. To the north, the imposing Catalina mountain range crowns the landscape. The shade structure consists of two dependent forms, reflected across a bifurcating dirt path. The structural orientation of the two forms promotes a natural circulation between them, and the paths of the site. The more open side of the structures face the lush greenery growing in their wet washes, while the walled side features an opening, leading curious wanderers into the meandering footpaths, south of the riverbed. The northern shade structure highlights the magnificent Catalina mountains while the southern shade structure features seating elements with a direct view of the immensely diverse verdure surrounding the site.

A strong connection to nature is paramount in any living environment, as integrating plants into a space can easily elevate the quality and standard of living of the space. This is one of the compositional elements that make up the spaces of this complex in the Armory Park neighborhood. Large openings extending from the ground to the sky uninterrupted, as well as great thresholds in the shared space and commercial garden space, create a natural fluidity all throughout the site from one end to the other. The massing volumes of each space are composed to form public and private courtyards for the community and for residents to enjoy. Alongside the fluid circulation between the spaces, all of the structures follow an analogous roof typology that promotes a clear centrality to the space. This design upholds the concept of a fluid circulation throughout the site, giving a great sense of unity to those who inhabit the space.
