What Does Unlocking Leadership Look Like?
#BESTSELF is a one-day intensive leadership development program for girls ages 11-16 that challenges stereotypes and helps girls be confident in the pursuit of their dreams. Through workshops by nationally known speaker-educators and interactive activities, girls learn skills in leadership, healthy conflict resolution and more, so they can embrace and be their “best selves.”
Young Women’s Initiative is a seven-year programmatic response and broad crosssector collaboration aimed to empower and affirm young women of color ages 17-24 from Dallas’ southern and western sectors. Through research, collaborative grantmaking and advocacy, YWI-Dallas will amplify the collective power of young women to identify and address core issues, and create solutions toward meaningful systemic change.

Programs Advancing Women’s and Girl’s Leadership Dallas Women’s Foundation develops and implements unique and effective programs for women and girls to acquire, refine and strengthen their leadership skills and potential. Young Women’s Initiative
#BESTSELF On Saturday, May 5, on the campus of Southern Methodist University, Dallas Women’s Foundation hosted the 4th annual #BESTSELF for 300 girls, ages 11-16, from schools and girl-serving organizations across North Texas. The girls were treated to a day-long program led by nationally known authors, educators and speakers – Rachel Simmons, Tiffany Dufu and Alicia Menendez. Through #BestSelf Speakers: Rachel girl-moderated panel discussions, Simmons, Tiffany Dufu, Alicia workshops and hands-on activities, girls Menendez gained skills and understanding of ways to build stronger relationships, mentor one another, and use their voices as they pursue gender equality in school, in life and in society. Young Women’s Initiative – Dallas is a first-of-its-kind, seven-year effort that centers young women of color, ages 17-24, providing training, resources and support to enable them to identify, address and change systems and structure that impact their health, safety and prosperity. From listening sessions with more than 200 young women in Fall 2017, the Foundation took self-nominations for the selection in January 2018 of the 18-member Young Women’s Advisory Committee (YWAC). YWAC members are prioritizing the issues they feel directly impact the lives of young women of color in their community, and identifying the changes they seek through a series of recommendations and a plan of action. The YWAC is supported by the Cross-Sector Committee, which is comprised of 15 adult allies who represent various sectors, including government, nonprofit, philanthropy, corporate, faith and education, to help advance the YWAC’s recommendations to result in systemic change.

Dallas Women’s Foundation is proud to be one of eight women’s foundations that have formed the National Philanthropic Collaborative of Young Women’s Initiatives. Together, we are committed to addressing the core, structural issues that have kept too many of our nation’s young women – particulary women of color – from reaching their full potential. As the first collaborative of its kind, the mission is to amplify the collective ability of young women to ensure that they are safe, healthy and economically prosperous in a world with gender and racial equity, by galvanizing and investing resources. Three members of the YWI-Dallas Young Women’s Advisory Council (YWAC) attended the United State of Women Summit on May 5 in Los Angeles, California, accompanied by Dallas Women’s Foundation leaders and our grantee partner who supports the YWAC. We were joined by leaders and members of the other seven women’s foundations’ Young Women’s Initiatives. Themed “Women Are Meant to Break Barriers,” the Summit featured movement-makers and inspiring speakers from across the country, including Dallas’ own YWAC member Amairani Gomez Hernandez. Amairani, and a representative from each of seven other Young Women’s Initiatives, spoke to the audience of more than 6,000 about her aspirations and the change her leadership will bring to women in the future.

Dallas Women’s Foundation Celebrates Women’s Leadership Dallas Women’s Foundation held our Leadership Forum & Awards Dinner, presented by AT&T, on April 19 at the Omni Dallas Hotel. The event featured keynote speaker Nina Tassler, former chairman of CBS Entertainment and author of What I Told My Daughter. The Leadership Forum & Awards Dinner, co-chaired by Effie Dennison and Jan Sharry, celebrates trailblazers who are paving the way for other women to advance in leadership, and it elevates the importance of gender equity across all sectors. XIX Society Bus Tour XIX Society members recently came on board our bus tour in East Dallas to visit Interfaith Family Services and The Ebby House – Juliette Fowler Communities. This tour brought to light the stark reality for women in our community who are faced with homelessness and financial instability, and for young girls who have aged out of foster care and are in need of housing and mentorship. Women and girls deserve a community where there are resources to help them break free of barriers that keep them in poverty. Even more, there are systemic problems that must be challenged and changed in order to create better opportunities for our daughters and granddaughters.

The Board Alumnae grant was presented to NTARuPT to support their work preventing unintended teen pregnancies by providing education and outreach to at-risk teens and their families. More than six years ago – through our 20152018 strategic plan – we set an important goal to move toward having 8-12 percent of our assets in gendered investments by 2018. We recognized that the burgeoning interest in impact investing revealed a simple truth that foundations and philanthropies, as well as individuals and institutions, had to countenance: new markets demand a closer alignment of investors’ values with Roslyn Dawson Thompson investment instruments. New investors want both to “do well and do good.” And the rise of the social enterprise means a blurring of definitions between investing for profit and social impact, and philanthropic grants for social impact.
Educating on Impact Investing As part of Dallas Women’s Foundation’s strategic goal and commitment to increasing impact investing with a gender lens, in 2017, we introduced our Women & Wealth series – events that highlight individuals and institutions that are leading in the social impact and gender lens investing space. Women & Wealth gathers together investors, donors, wealth advisors, accounting and legal professionals, and estate planners to learn about key trends in gender lens investing, impact investing overall, and the role that women and millennials are playing in demanding more ability and options to align their investments with their values. Expert panelists and speakers address these subjects and provide a forum for participants to explore this rapidly changing environment. Here we are six years later, and we have had an exciting journey of learning and experimenting, researching and examining opportunities to broaden our own definition of how we work to “increase investment in women and girls, and empower women’s philanthropy.” I’m happy to say that, over these years, we have become recognized as a leader among women’s foundations in supporting the adoption of gender lens investing, and aided in advancing this concept and dialog across the movement. We’ve spoken at conferences and convenings. We’ve provided expertise and encouragement to those just beginning the journey. And we’ve been voracious learners, who admittedly, still have much to learn! Currently, our direct gender lens investments include funds that are invested in women-owned and women-led businesses, as well as two loan funds managed by third party nonprofit lenders that support women entrepreneurs in North Texas. As of July 2017, following an RFP process, we also moved to a new financial institution for our assets under management. This institution has a well-developed gendered portfolio (originally built for another women’s foundation!), as well as other gendered offerings, and that enabled us to move 15 percent of our assets into gendered investments a year ahead of our 2018 goal. A year later, we have more than 20 percent of our assets under management in gendered investments. Now, as we undertake a new strategic planning process, we anticipate placing even greater emphasis on impact investing with a gender lens, and establishing more aggressive goals for the future. We are working to enlist others to join us on this journey – because we are convinced that impact investing with a gender lens can have as much or greater impact than philanthropy on driving social change. It’s the next phase of the journey, and we invite you to come with us! It’s going to be an exciting and rewarding adventure!

Groundbreaking Research on The Status of Women Dallas Women’s Foundation produces timely research on the issues that impact women and girls across our state, and demonstrates the fundamental benefits of women’s equality and leadership to our economy and future.
These stiudies, produced in collaboration with the Institute for Women’s Policy Research, offer comprehensive insights regarding trends in employment, earnings, health insurance, education, poverty and opportunity. Despite some positive trends, Texas still needs improvement.
On International Women’s Day, Dallas Women’s Foundation released two new studies: The Status of Women in Texas and The Status of Women in Collin, Dallas and Denton Counties.
Research Findings Employment, Wages and Labor Force: • Women in Texas ages 16 and older who work full-time, yearround have median annual earnings of $37,400, which is 79.6 cents on the dollar compared with similarly-employed men. • Women’s median earnings in Dallas County are similar to the state average, $37,511, while women in Denton and Collin counties have higher annual earnings ($46,362 and $50,691, respectively.) Asian/Pacific Islander women in Collin County have the highest earnings, at $64,907 annually, and Hispanic women in Dallas County have the lowest earnings, at $25,345. • The gender wage gap is smallest in Dallas County, where women earn 92 cents on the dollar compared with men. The gap is much wider in Denton County at 76.2 percent, and Collin County at 70.3 percent. • Hispanic women in Collin, Dallas and Denton counties who work full-time, year-round earn less than half of white men’s earnings; in Dallas County, Hispanic women earn just 38.4 cents for every dollar earned by white men in the county.
Women-Owned Businesses: • In Texas, 36.8 percent of businesses are owned by women, slightly above the national average of 35.8 percent, and up from 28.2 percent in 2007. Poverty Levels:
Health Insurance: • Seventy-eight percent of Texas women ages 18-64 have health insurance coverage, which is below the national average for women (89.4 percent). Fewer than three in four women in Dallas County have health insurance (74.0 percent), while 85.8 percent of women in Denton County and 87.7 percent of women in Collin County have coverage. In all three counties, Hispanic women are the least likely to have health insurance. Education: • Approximately 29 percent of women ages 25 and older in Texas have a bachelor’s degree or higher. Educational attainment among women varies widely by race and ethnicity.
• Texas ranks 34th nationally for women in poverty; 17 percent of Texas women ages 18 and older live in poverty, compared with 14.2 percent of Texas men.
• Smaller shares of women in Collin and Denton counties are poor (7.4 and 10.1 percent). Comparing women in the three counties, white women in Collin County have the lowest poverty rate at 5.3 percent, and Hispanic women in Dallas County have the highest poverty rate at 22.8 percent. On Shaky Ground: Stabilizing the Financial Security of Aging Single Women Dallas Women’s Foundation recently hosted presentations on women aging into poverty. This timely discussion was an opportunity for attendees to hear some solutions to the pressing challenges of women ages 45-65, also called “The Sandwich Generation”, who are lacking
the resources to be financially secure as they age. Keynote speaker, Dr. Amy Baker, identified areas where innovation and investment intersect to help women and their families move from surviving to thriving. Dallas Women’s Foundation is addressing challenges facing aging women by investing in programs that are tackling the lack of affordable housing, gender discrimination in credit and lending, and increasing the availability of gender-neutral retirement tools. We look forward to continuing to bring awareness to these issues so solutions can be reached.

Child Care Each year, thousands of Dallas families struggle with access to affordable child care, a growing problem that often leads to wage loss, career stagnation and deferred education. This is particularly true in households headed by single women. To combat this community-wide issue, Dallas Women’s Foundation committed $3.5 million over six years to the Foundation’s Child Care Access Fund, part of an innovative, comprehensive solution that addresses the lack of affordable, quality child care for lowerincome families.
