6 | DALLAS ATHLETIC CLUB

For the Reed family, golf is about much more than the game; it’s about making time to be together. Between busy work and school schedules, the course is one of the few places where the whole family can slow down and enjoy time together. From Friday afternoon nine holes with Elle to full rounds with Hudson when he’s home from the University of Oklahoma, golf has become a favorite family tradition and a meaningful part of their experience at the Club. With Elizabeth now beginning her own golf journey, the Reeds are finding even more ways to enjoy the game and create memories together. What do you love the most about time on the course together? Honestly, it’s just being together. Between my law practice, Elizabeth running the household, Hudson off at OU, and Elle’s school schedule, the course is one of the few places where we can all slow down at the same time. A Friday afternoon 9 holes with Elle — or a full round with Hudson when he’s home from Oklahoma — is the best part of my week. Who started first, and who caught the bug next? I picked up the game well before the kids came along. Hudson caught the bug as a teenager and is now a member at Jimmie Austin, the University of Oklahoma’s course, where he plays and practices regularly while he’s at school. Elle came next on our end — she started lessons with Shelly Davis a few years ago and has run with it. The latest convert is Elizabeth, who has just begun her own golf journey and joins us for 9 holes every now and then.

MEMBERSHIP

Favorite pre-round tradition at the Club? Elle and I are creatures of habit. We try to get to the Club at least an hour before tee time — stretching first, then pitching and chipping, then to the range for full swings, and finally onto the putting green. A quick bite at the 9.5 is a non-negotiable part of the routine.

What has golf taught your family? Honesty and patience. Golf doesn’t let you fake it — you call your own penalties, you play it as it lies, and you learn to handle a bad break without letting it wreck the next swing. This is still a work in progress, though. Good lessons for a 6th grader, a college kid, and a mediocre golfer that is way past his prime alike.

Family team name? We didn’t know we needed one — but now that you’ve asked, we’re suddenly accepting submissions. “Reeds on the Greens” is the early frontrunner. Though on a bad ball-striking day, “Reeds in the Rough” might be the more accurate option. We’re open to better ideas from the membership. Longest drives/putting champion? Hudson, hands down, hits the longest drives — between the gym and being 21 years old, he out-drives me by more than I’d like to admit. Elle is the short game champion. All those Tuesday afternoons on the chipping and putting greens — plus her work with Shelly — have made her the one you want hitting the delicate shot around the green. Favorite junior golf activity at the Club? For Elle, it’s tournament golf. Her first summer competing in North Texas PGA Junior events in 2025 was a huge step — she won several events and earned an invitation to the Summer Championship. That said, our Friday afternoon 9 holes together might still be the family favorite.

Advice for a new family wanting to get plugged into golf? If you have kids, get them into the junior programs at the Club. Use the practice facilities — the short game area is outstanding — and don’t be shy about jumping into Club events. The DAC community welcomes you in when you show up.

Go-to snack or treat after a great day? A Dr. Pepper float. Hands down. It’s earned a permanent spot in our post-round routine.

TURF TALK

BEFORE THE FIRST TEE TIME An inside look at what it takes to prepare the courses for fall play. As summer heat fades and temperatures moderate, our bentgrass greens and bermudagrass playing surfaces enter an important recovery period. Cooler nights and lower soil temperatures benefit the bentgrass, while bermudagrass remains actively growing long enough to recover from the stresses and traffic of summer. Together, these conditions typically produce some of our best playing conditions of the year. Fall is also one of our busiest golf seasons. Between daily member play, Club tournaments, outings and special events, the courses see tremendous activity throughout September and October. Our agronomy team works continuously to balance recovery and routine maintenance while preparing both courses for play each morning.

Before You Tee Off Long before the first golfers arrive, our team is already at work across both courses. In addition to daily course setup, staff members hand water, clear debris, service on-course amenities, put out ice towels, check playing conditions and address anything that may have developed overnight. This work is carefully coordinated so crews can stay ahead of play and complete as much maintenance as possible without interfering with golfers.

Tournament Preparation Starts Weeks Ahead While major events may require additional mowing, rolling, bunker preparation and detailed cleanup, much of the work begins weeks in advance—particularly on our greens. Aeration, venting, topdressing and adjustments to mowing heights, fertility and other maintenance practices all influence green speed, smoothness and firmness. Because the benefits of these practices can take days or even weeks to fully develop, each must be carefully timed ahead of major events. Ultimately, the goal for a tournament isn’t much different from any other day: provide consistent playing conditions and have the courses ready when the first groups tee off.

8 | DALLAS ATHLETIC CLUB

BY THE NUMBERS Before you tee off... On a typical morning, the Agronomy Team prepares:

47

greens mowed and/or rolled

36

hole locations changed

149 180 25

bunkers raked

pairs of tee markers set

acres of tees, collars, approaches and fairways mowed on at least one course*

*Depending on the day’s mowing schedule

And that’s just part of the morning. The team is also hand watering, clearing debris, servicing on-course amenities, putting out ice towels, checking course set up and addressing anything that may have developed overnight.

A MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR OF GOLF

A NEW SEASON FOR DAC GOLF

G O L F CALENDAR

SEPTEMBER

As we find ourselves in the heat of summer, there is plenty to be excited about around the golf operation at Dallas Athletic Club. We continue to make great progress on our Golf Shop Refresh, and we appreciate everyone’s patience and flexibility as we work through the phases of the project. We are excited about the improvements being made and look forward to welcoming everyone back into an updated space that better serves our membership.

Looking a little further ahead, we are also excited to welcome a new fleet of golf carts this fall, arriving just in time for one of the biggest weeks on our calendar, The “Tradition” Member/Guest. Our team is hard at work preparing for a memorable event and an exciting fall golf season.

September is time for one of our favorite competitions of the year with the Nicklaus Cup Matches. This year represents a new look and feel that we are excited about. Congratulations to all of our members who qualified to represent DAC this year! We look forward to a great few days of competition, camaraderie, and plenty of DAC pride.

Good Golfing,

There is a lot happening around DAC Golf, and we appreciate the continued support. Stay cool, enjoy the remainder of the summer, and we look forward to seeing you around the Club!

FLOWER BEDS Tim Brown, PGA Head Golf Professional

Recently, this ruling came up in our Men’s 4-Ball match play. This falls under our Local Rules. The flower beds on Blue #8, #18, and #13 Gold are played as obstructions. Think of obstructions as a cart path; we all know we get relief if our ball is on the path, or if we are standing on the cart path. The same relief applies to our flower beds.

FITNESS

FITNESS TIP

HEALTHY LOOKS DIFFERENT FOR EVERYONE Bernie Garces Fitness Director One of the things I enjoy most about the Fitness Center is seeing how differently our members define success. For some, it’s walking 18 holes without feeling worn out. For others, it’s adding strength, improving balance, recovering from an injury, or simply having more energy to enjoy time with family and friends. No matter where you are on your fitness journey, there isn’t just one definition of being healthy. As we move into the fall season and schedules begin to fill up again, it’s easy for exercise to slide down the priority list. Vacations end, school resumes, work becomes busier, and routines change. The key is remembering that staying healthy doesn’t require perfection—it requires consistency. Even a few workouts each week, a morning walk, or taking time to improve your mobility can have a lasting impact on how you feel.

activities, improves balance and mobility, supports heart health, and helps you keep doing the things you enjoy most. Whether that’s playing golf, competing on the tennis courts, swimming, chasing grandchildren, or simply feeling better throughout the day, movement makes a difference. This fall, challenge yourself to create a routine you can maintain. Set aside time on your calendar, invite a friend to work out with you, or try a new fitness class. Small habits, repeated consistently, often produce the greatest results. Our goal is to help you continue enjoying an active lifestyle for years to come. We look forward to seeing you in the Fitness Center this season and helping you reach whatever “healthy” looks like for you.

The Fitness Center isn’t just a place to exercise; it’s a place to invest in yourself. Every workout builds strength for everyday

BETTER SLEEP STARTS WITH BETTER MOVEMENT As summer gives way to the busy fall season, many of us find our schedules filling up with work, school, sports, and social commitments. One of the first things to suffer is often sleep—but regular exercise is one of the most effective ways to improve both the quantity and quality of your rest. Physical activity helps regulate your body’s internal clock, making it easier to fall asleep and wake up feeling refreshed. Exercise also reduces stress hormones while increasing endorphins, helping your mind unwind after a busy day. Perhaps most importantly, regular movement increases the amount of deep sleep your body gets each night. This is the stage of sleep where your muscles recover, your immune system is strengthened, and your body prepares for the next day. You don’t have to train for a marathon to see these benefits. Moderate activity such as strength training, brisk walking, cycling, swimming, or playing a round of golf while walking the course can all contribute to

better sleep when performed consistently. Even just 30 minutes of movement most days of the week can improve sleep quality and leave you feeling more energized throughout the day. If possible, try to finish higher-intensity workouts at least two to three hours before bedtime so your body has time to cool down. Evening mobility work, gentle stretching, yoga, or even a relaxing walk can also help signal to your body that it’s time to wind down. Sleep and exercise work together in a positive cycle. Better sleep gives you more energy to stay active, and staying active helps you sleep more soundly. As the days become shorter and schedules become busier, make movement part of your daily routine—it may be the simplest way to improve your nights and feel your best during the day.

MYTH VS. FACT Myth: You need an hour to get a good workout. Fact: A focused 20–30 minute workout can build strength, improve fitness, boost energy, and reduce stress. Consistency matters more than duration. Myth: Golf is enough exercise. Fact: Golf keeps you active, but strength, balance, flexibility, and mobility training can improve your game, build endurance, and help prevent injury. Myth: It’s too late to build strength. Fact: Strength training is beneficial at every age. It can improve muscle mass, bone density, balance, and everyday function—even when started later in life.
