A Letter from the President Warren Sibley In the middle of a hectic summer, as life ramps back up to “normal”, activities resume, and schedules fill, I’ve felt the overwhelming need to say, “thank you” to so many people. Thank you to the moms and dads who persevered with us as we tried (then failed, tried and failed again, then kept trying) to implement some sort of reservation system - on the fly - to allow for pool usage, while abiding by ever-changing guidelines. Thank you to the golfers who played in the midst of some of our heaviest sustained usage in recent memory, while at the same time dealt with cups sticking out of the ground, having to walk, single rider carts, no fivesomes, no range balls, no practice facility, no guests, “don’t touch the flag”, “where’s the rake?”, and more. Thank you to the tennis players who had to deal with no leagues, no water, no pros, no doubles, and all the worry about how to space and find your tennis balls. Thank you to all our regular groups of card players, early morning coffee drinkers, 19th-hole revelers, Wednesday night family dinners, and fitness facility users who had their routines upended. A huge thank you to all our employees who continue to come to work in the middle of a pandemic and maintain the high level of service we’ve grown to appreciate. Lastly, thank you to our executive staff for their ingenuity, creative ideas, and stick-to-itiveness which allowed us to set the standard for other clubs in our area, keep our workers employed, and our Club open. I realize we are not “out of the woods”. Covid isn’t going anywhere. Undoubtedly, we will have new guidelines that will temporarily change how we do things and cause us to alter our plans. We will do our best to keep you informed and updated.

As a Board, we will continue to look to the future and strategize on ways to upgrade our facilities, improve our service, and enhance your Club experience. Plans and conceptual drawings for capital improvements are on-going and exciting. We hope to bring you scale drawings of significant improvements we are planning for the Club in the near future. Although it has been delayed, we had our annual Board retreat last week. We spent the entire day reviewing the last year and looking ahead to the years to come. We met with all the executive staff, our golf course consultant, clubhouse architect and chart a course for the coming months and years. In the middle of the craziest of times, Dallas Athletic Club is poised for some of its best years ever. Thanks again,

Warren Sibley President

CONGRATULATIONS! Mr. Scott Johnson and his son, Morgan took the title in the Golfweek Father-Son on the Honda Classic Course in West Palm. The duo shot 5 under for the two days in the version of alternate shot called Chapman. Mr. Scott Johnson states that he “hit the best shot I’ve hit in 30 years on 18 off Morgan’s drive.” They ended up beating a mini tour pro and his Dad in a playoff. Congratulations to Mr. Johnson and his son, Morgan!

FROM THE DESK OF CARI CUNNINGHAM Do we have the correct e-mail and contact information for you and your family members? Have you recently moved, changed your phone number or perhaps had a new addition to your family? We need to have a current and updated membership database to be able to keep you well informed, whether it be relevant membership information or important upcoming event details, we want to keep you in the loop! By having the correct information on file, we can better reach targeted interested groups to ensure that you are receiving what is meaningful to you! You can also now opt-in to interest groups that you wish to receive communications. First,

visit your profile on the website and scroll to the “Member Interests” section and select “Edit.” Check all that interests you and save; it’s that simple! You will be on your way to receiving information from the club that is interesting and relevant to you! If you were once receiving e-mails and are no longer, it could be that we do not have the correct information on file or you may have opted-out by mistake. Please feel free to call me if you need to add or delete information on your profile. Wishing you a safe and Happy Fourth of July and wonderful summer! Cheers,

Cari Cunningham

Membership Director ccunningham@dacstaff.org

Money Talks

Summer time is upon us and we wanted to let you know of one upcoming change on your Club statements. If you are a golf member, on your July 31 statement we will be combining your membership dues and range fees into a single line item. Since range fees are a required fee for golf members, the change will help streamline your recurring monthly club fees. My team and I are always available to answer any questions that you may have regarding your statement changes and payment options, please feel free to give us a call or send us an email. Enjoy the summer and Happy 4th of July. Cassie Thames

KEVIN NETTLES, SUPERINTENDENT COURSE CONDITIONS We continue to see excellent course conditions as we move into our summer months. You may wonder what contributes to these great course conditions. On our fairways, there are several factors that have added to the quality. These factors include the aggressive top dress program we began late last summer, and the replacement of our ten-year-old fairway mowers with new mowers that have technologically advanced precise cut features. We also experienced a few weeks earlier this spring where there were no carts on the courses due to the pandemic, and another factor to weigh in is that there have been no outside events. On the greens, we tested for fungus, nematodes,

and percolation which have resulted in modifications to our programs. Even though the number of rounds has not decreased, players are spending less time on the greens due to not having to tend the flags. The roughs have also been in much better conditions than previous years. The lack of cart use for a few weeks’ factors into these conditions. However, I believe that the new cart fleet received in May has made cart traffic less detrimental than we have seen in the past, due to the lighter weight lithium batteries. The tree removal program that we completed last winter also factors in, as well as the planting of sod in many of the areas that the sunlight was unable to reach due to the trees growing so closely together. This July you will see us out topdressing our fairways once again. During this process, we will be closing nine holes on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Keep an eye out for communications about this process, as well as what holes and when they will be closed.

Make Bunker Play Simpler... Lance Patterson, Director of Golf There are lots of different types of bunker shots you can learn to play and there are lots that I can teach you. The one that I found that is the most important bunker shot to teach is the one that ends up on the green. Bunker shots can be intimidating; big lips, deep bunkers, water on the other side of the green, oh sheesh! So let’s make this simple, it’s mostly about the setup. Holding your sand wedge in front of you, turn the face open about 20 degrees, then take your grip. Get into your stance with the ball way forward, opposite the heel of your front foot. Then, set a little more weight on your front side, keep your hands even with the clubhead. You

want the shaft to be straight up and down. Make a half backswing, then really spank the sand two to three inches behind the ball. Here’s the visual: You’re throwing the sand and ball out of the bunker together. It’s easy and it works. One of the big issues on bunker shots is, people think they’re supposed to cut across the ball when you do that, but you lose the sliding action of the club. Why? Because that action comes from the face being open, and it’s hard to hold the face open when it’s cutting to the left. Swing out to your target, like on a normal pitch shot. It’s that easy!
