6th Annual Event Opens On Nov. 29; Free Concerts By Whiskey Raccoons & James Carothers On Nov. 30

he Belleville Christkindlmarkt Committee, under the Belleville Cultural Enrichment Organization, is excited to announce the sixth annual Christkindlmarkt: An authentic German Christmas Market set around the southeast and northeast corners of scenic Public Square daily from Nov. 29 through Dec. 23. After the huge success of the first five Christkindlmarkts, Belleville's own "Christmas Carole," Director Carole Piontkowsky, said, “It's hard to believe we are in our sixth year. Each year grows with new and returning visitors," she said. "The Christkindlmarkt has become a fixture in Belleville and around the St. Louis area. This year we wanted to provide even more free events so those visiting family and friends will come downtown and see all that Belleville has to offer." In a nod to Belleville’s rich German heritage, the Christkindlmarkt features European craft vendors and German food from Mascoutah Steak House (new owners of Roemer Topf) Babushka's Polish Food, Oma Gisi, Sister Cities of Paderborn and Abe's Gourmet Popcorn. Be sure and try German beverages like the traditional Gluhwein, which is a warm spiced wine, as well as German beers and hot chocolate. Attendees this year will find the same number of vendors, yet, there will be many new vendors coming and going every week. Thus, visitors are encouraged to shop often to make sure they see everything. A new family event this year is the Winter Wonderland Snow Globe. This is a lifesize snow globe that individuals or groups can get a fun photo from 2 to 5 p.m. on Dec. 8 and 14. Other free events for all ages will include a cookie decorating class with Sugar Doodles 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Dec. 14 and 22. Pre-registration is required on or after Dec. 1 for this special project. Another delicious activity is Tastings and Pairings presented by Seven Restaurant and Bar at 6 p.m. on Dec. 3 and 10. Preregistration required on or before Dec. 1. Obviously there is a lot to do in the month of December so be sure and check these activities and other entertainment schedules on the web site.

All completed passports must be submitted to Local Lucy's at 310 East Main St. by Dec. 22 where kids will receive a free gift just for participating (while supplies last) and one passport will be drawn on Dec. 23 to win $100 in Main Street dollars. he story of Jim and Ada Austin’s famed name began on a family farm in Harmony, Mn. "When it was time for Ada to take a step back from her many jobs off the farm in the early '90s, they created this whole little cottage industry that just boomed for them," their daughter, Konya Bloomquist, said, referring to their extremely successful business - Austin’s Angora Goats and Mohair Gift shop. It quickly became a must-see Minnesota travel destination not only because of the beautiful Angora Mohair fiber items in the shop, but because of the couple's warm hearts, engaging personalities and a great regard for the color purple. Bloomquist said that one time in London's Heathrow Airport she noticed a woman wearing a purple T-shirt from the farm. The woman looked at her and said, "Can I help you?" quite suspiciously, because she was being stared at, and smiled at, by a strange American lady! Bloomquist said to her, "Have you been to the Goat farm and met the Old Goat lady?" The woman exclaimed "Yes! I LOVE HER!" and Bloomquist replied, "I DO TOO! That's my mom!" The family hears those kinds of stories often and realizes it's a wonderful tribute to Jim and Ada's love for their Angora goats, Babydoll sheep, Silky and Fainting goats. They treated the animals with compassion and offered wears and goods that came from them. The shop was always stocked with hides, soaps and home décor, but

the most popular item was the mohair socks! Ada, in fact, became known as the “Old Sock Lady.” Sadly, in 2012, Ada passed away and the decision was made to close the shop, but that didn’t stop the calls from coming in… people still wanted the socks! So, after careful thought and consideration it was decided that Konya (Austin) Bloomquist and her husband, Joe, would continue the family business and Austin’s Mohair Socks was born. As a small child, Kenzie was diagnosed with a degenerative bone disease called Leggs-Calves Perthes. During her treatment time in both SSM Cardinal Glennon and St. Louis Childrenâ€™s hospitals, she noticed many children and families missing the opportunity to share in the joy of the holidays. Thus she founded the non-for-profit Fire Truck O'Toys. It has since been her mission to make sure every hospitalized child and family receives that joy in the form of the simplest of gifts at Christmas â€“ a toy!

Eye Doctor Helps Legally Blind To See

High Technology For Low Vision Patients Helps Many To Drive Again

or many patients with macular degeneration and other vision-related conditions, the loss of central visual detail also signals the end to one of the last bastion of independence: driving. A Mascoutah optometrist, Dr. Marianne McDaniel, is using miniaturized telescopes that are mounted in glasses to help people who have lost vision from macular degeneration and other eye conditions.

Nine out of 10 people who have macular degeneration have the dry form. New research suggests vitamins can help. The British medical journal BMC Ophthalmology recently reported that 50 percent of patients treated with a high-dose combination of vitamins experienced improved vision after six months. While age is the most significant risk factor for developing the disesase, heredity, smoking, cardiovascular disease, and high blood pressure have also been identified as risk factors.

Some patients consider Dr. Marianee McDaniel the last stop for people who have vision loss, one of only a few doctors in the world who specialize in fitting bioptic telescopes to help those who have lost vision due to macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and other debilitating eye diseases.

Macular degeneration accounts for 90 percent of new legal blindness in the U.S. While there is currently no cure, promising research is being done on many fronts. "My job is to figure out everything and anything possible to keep a person functioningm especially driving," said Dr. McDaniel.

Imagine a pair of glasses that can improve vision enough to actually change one's life. Low vision patients have probably not only imagined them, but have been searching for them. Bioptic telescopes may be the breakthrough in optical technology that will return the independence to whom once had it. Patients with vision in the 20/200 range can many times be improved to 20/50 or better. Macular degeneration is the leading causae of blindness and vision loss in people over 50. Despite this, most adults are not familiar with the condition. As many as 25 percent of those over the age of 50 have some degree of macular degeneration. The macula is only one small part of the retina; however, it is the most sensitive and gives us sharp central vision. When it degenerates, macular degeneration leaves a blind spot right in the center of vision, making it difficult or impossible to recognize faces, read a book, or pass the driver's vision test.

"Bioptic telescopes can cost over $2,000," she said, "especially if we build them with an automatic sunglass. The major benefit of the bioptic telescope is that the lens automatically focuses on whatever you're looking at. It's like a self-focusing camera, but more more precise." The Glory of Christmas Is Set For 7 p.m. On December 8 and 9

or 29 years, Metro East audiences have been treated to a spectacular Christmas concert presented by the St. Matthew Sanctuary Choir, Orchestra and Drama Ministry. The Glory of Christmas is the story of Christ’s birth, what he meant to the world then and what he continues to mean for us today. “There are at least 200 people who participate including entire families some of whom have grown up in the church and now have children of their own who are involved in the program,” said Hank Oplinger, Minister of Music at St. Matthew United Methodist Church in Belleville. “From costume and set design to caring for the live animals on set, to singing in the choir or playing in the orchestra, everyone has their part to play.” The program has something for everyone including a secular side featuring fun holiday

songs, the “Parade of the Wooden Soldiers,” and so much more. One of the highlights of the evening is a performance of “The Little Drummer Boy” by the Belleville West Drum Line. This year, national recording artist Brian Arner will be performing as well. “The Glory of Christmas will start at 7 p.m., but Brian will begin at 6:30 p.m.,” Oplinger said. “Honestly, we encourage people to get to the church at least by 6 p.m. to ensure a good seat.” Indeed, there is no charge for this very special event and the sanctuary will fill up quickly.
