A) I attend the Mower and Olmsted County fairs.

B) I keep very busy with my 4-H leader obligations, and I enjoy watching the tractor pull and the rodeo.

B) I enjoy going into the barns to see the cattle and visit with local people.

A) We attend the Clayton County Fair and the Delaware County Fair.

B) We always make it a point to look through the junior and livestock exhibits at all of the fairs. It’s fun to see the hard work pay off for the junior exhibitors, and the pride they have in their projects. C) The county fairs give the public a chance to get back to the basics and remember where their food comes from. I believe it is a very educational experience for many people today. It gives many children the chance to get close to the animals and learn how these animals are taken care of and what their purpose is. D) Gail is in charge of the little britches dairy show at the Vernon County Fair. This event is specically for children less than 4-H age, and lets them bring a calf less than four months old to the fair. The kid and calf arrive at the fair just before the noon lunch break in the junior dairy show, walk through the show ring, stop to talk to the master of ceremonies, and get a prize for their participation. This year’s fair will mark the 22nd year. Gail has been involved either showing the rst years or helping with the show through her 4-H years and is now running the program. E) We enjoy taking our family to the different fairs and seeing what each county does differently. We also enjoy seeing other families that we have gotten to know, and their projects displayed at the fair. And, of course, we always have to check out some good fair food! F) We milk 55 registered Holsteins and Jerseys just south of Viroqua, Wis. Gail grew up on a registered Holstein dairy near Westby and Rob grew up in Cashton. In April of 2002 we began farming together and purchased our rst Jerseys. When we started, we rented a facility, and in October of 2006, we purchased our farm. We enjoy showing cattle at the Wisconsin Jersey Spring Show, the Parish Four Jersey Show, the state Jersey show, and the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, Ky., as well as the district two Holstein show, the Vernon County Fair, and the Viola Dairy Show. We have three children: Reagan (6), Garrison (4) and Rubi (4 months).

C) It’s very valuable. One example is the implement dealers bringing their equipment to the fairgrounds. The farmers get to check it out, but it also allows the town people to realize how farm equipment is evolving and the amount of technology that is going into it. D) I am a leader for the Peppy Pals Mendon Hustlers 4-H Club. I work the 4-H foodstand most of each day of the fair, usually about eight hours. The food stand is open Wednesday to Sunday for the fair, and then on Monday for the livestock auctions. I watch as much of the judging of the livestock and non-livestock exhibits of our members as I can. A lot of kids take photography, but our members also have projects in gardening, woodworking, clothing, life science and welding categories. We also end up spending a lot of time decorating the barns and the exhibit hall. The day after the fair we go and help with clean up. I enjoy it. E) I like watching the kids showing their projects and getting judged. Although I don’t get to see as much of it as I would like. I really like watching the livestock exhibitors with their projects because they put so much into it; it can be a year-long project, or sometimes even longer. F) We own 240 acres, of which 90 is tillable, and we rent another 35. We grow corn, alfalfa and oats. We milk in a tiestall barn with pipeline and have a barn cleaner system that goes into a manure pit. I work on the farm with my son, Andrew. My wife, Sherry, works in town and helps out when she can.

C) I think it's good for people to see what goes on: how the farmers takes care of their livestock and where some of their food comes from. D) I have helped some years at the steer show. E) I enjoy the food, visiting with people and taking in the different livestock shows. F) I farm with my two brothers, Chris and Tim, along with my dad and mom, Roger and Dianna. We built a parlor in 1999 and raise our own replacement heifers and beef cattle. Our crops consist of corn, beans and hay.

B) I always watch the dairy shows – both dairy goat and dairy cattle, and I always walk through the barn to see all the animals. C) I think the kids learning about their animals and the friendships they make are very important. D) I am a volunteer 4-H leader for the Lodomillo Leaders 4-H Club. I work at the 4-H foodstand, work the 4-H exhibit hall, help the club out with barn duty, and I also volunteer at the Dairy Bar serving ice cream and malts. I do it because I enjoy spending time with my children, and I love seeing all the kids succeed with their projects – their faces lighting up when they receive a trophy or when they place in the top ve. E) I really enjoy watching the shows and watching all the farm kids who are involved with their animals. F) We milk Holsteins, Brown Swiss, Jerseys and some crossbreds in a 45-stall tiestall barn. We are a “mom and pop” operation. It’s just me and my husband, Monte, and our children: Samantha (21), Ben (19), Courtney (17) and Nick (15). We have 220 acres, where we grow corn, alfalfa, oats and some other forages such as milo. We also rotationally graze.

Goodhue County 95 cows A) We have been to the Cannon Valley Fair and now we are at the Goodhue County Fair with our animals. It was too hot this year so we haven’t been to the other fairs we normally go to. We usually try to get to Olmsted, Steele, Rice, Fillmore, Dodge and McLeod. We also go to the state fair. B) We always go to the dairy barn. We like looking at all the cattle. Emily likes to stop by to see the horses. We also like looking at the 4-H projects. Michelle likes the photography and quilting projects while Roger enjoys seeing the shop projects. C) It’s a good way to get away from the farm and have social interaction with others. At the Goodhue County Fair, we get to see people who don’t live that far away from us, but we don’t talk to much other than at the county fair. Fairs are also a good public relations opportunity for the farming community. Non-farm people get to see animals. County fairs are also a good way to get the next generation interested in farming. D) At our fair, Michelle is in charge of the stalling for the dairy animals, is one of the organizers for the adult supreme showmanship and clerked the non livestock exhibit entry day. Emily is an emcee for the 4-H awards ceremony. Both Michelle and Roger have judged herdsmanship. We do it because it’s a good way to help out in any way we can. Somebody’s got to do it and if we don’t step up and do our share, who else will? E) We like seeing what people bring to the fair and enjoy the fair food, especially cheese curds. It’s also a good social outing for visiting with others. F) We are an organic dairy that grazes crossbred cattle. We own 260 acres of mostly pasture and hay. We calve seasonally – onethird of our herd calves in the fall while the rest of the herd calves in the spring. Our family likes to be involved in 4-H and we show animals at the Goodhue County Fair every year.
