Enhancing the experience Bentley shares what’s new at World Dairy Expo 2015 BY MISSY MUSSMAN Staff writer
MADISON, Wis. – General Manager, Scott Bentley said last year’s additions of the New Holland Pavilions were a big hit among the World Dairy Expo exhibitors and attendees. “We had overwhelmingly positive feedback last year,” Bentley said. “The pavilions improved the exhibitors’ ability to market their cattle, genetics and prexes by allowing them plenty of room to have displays and be able to engage perspective buyers. We found the sweet spot.” Once again, exhibitors and attendees will be able to enjoy the world-class cattle, facilities and trade show during World Dairy Expo 2015: Dairy in Our DNA, from Sept. 29 through Oct. 3 at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison, Wis. Although it is one of the world’s best dairy cattle shows and includes a trade show that is ranked in the top 25 largest within the United States, the staff continues to make improvements. “We want to enhance the experience for everyone,” Bentley said. One of the ways the Expo plans to enhance the experience for the attendees is by offering a free daily shuttle service from ve select hotels – The Edgewater, The Madison Concourse Hotel and Governors Club, Best Western Plus Inn on the Park, Sheraton Madison Hotel and Graduate Madison – to the World Dairy Expo grounds’ Rusk Gate. “The two shuttles will be looping all day for continuous service,” Bentley said. “If attendees are coming for a day or all week and staying at or near one of these downtown hotels, they won’t have to drive their cars to the show.” Attendees will also be able to view Expo TV in the New Holland Trade Center this year.

Attendees visit with exhibitors during the 2014 World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wis. New this year, there will be survey kiosks available to attendees who are not cattle or commercial exhibitors. “We haven’t broadcasted in the NHTC, only in the Exhibition Hall and Arena buildings,” Bentley said. “Now we will be expanding our services ongrounds reach. That will be a plus for our attendees who want to keep up with the progression of the shows.” Another modication to World Dairy Expo this year will be the new milk pickup handling process. This year exhibitors milking their cows in the bedding pack will have an Turn to ENHANCING | Page 3

Twenty 300-gallon milk receiving stations will be conveniently stationed around the Pavilions and Tent for exhibitors to empty their 5-gallon buckets. Exhibitors will then be responsible for rinsing and returning the buckets to their string. Students from the Badger Dairy Club will continue to empty the receiving stations Scott Bentley throughout each General manager day using a tractor and trailer. But this year, they will be using a suction hose to remove the milk from the stations and then rinse the station area with water. “We are very pleased with this change and upgrade,” Bentley said. “The improvement will maximize exhibitor ease-of-use and cleanliness while enhancing the attendee experience.” Accompanying a new milk handling process this year is the newly created Pavilion Manager position. “This volunteer will work with all show stakeholders and is the liaison for the exhibitors. He will be responsible for manure management, milk handling, lighting and sound for the PA

for our attendees who are not cattle or commercial exhibitors, sponsors or contest participants,” Bentley said. “We wanted to capture the feedback from the attendees and nd out what their favorite experiences were – or what their priorities are – at World Dairy Expo. That way, we can make it a better experience for the next year’s attendees.” With the World Dairy Expo’s 50th celebration coming up next year, Bentley said they will also be unveiling and selling a commemorative book celebrating World Dairy Expo’s golden anniversary. “This book is bringing the last 50 years together. It’ll bring World Dairy Expo to life,” Bentley said. “There are fascinating stories for people to enjoy.” The book is entitled We Need A Show and will be available for purchase at World Dairy Expo in the Purple Cow Gift Shop – located in the Exhibition Hall – and at a special book table in the west lobby of the Coliseum. The books will sell for $25. “50th book will be a fun aspect at World Dairy Expo this year,” Bentley said. There may be several new features at the Expo this year, but Bentley said they all serve a purpose. “They will maximize the experience for everyone,” he said. “That’s our priority.”

“It’s a chance to meet up with other people involved in the dairy industry.”
Mervin Martin Riceville, Iowa Howard County 110 cows
How many years have you attended World Dairy Expo? I started going 12 years ago. I’ve missed a couple years since then. Describe what the expo means to you. It’s a chance to meet other dairy farmers, see really nice cattle and meet up with other people involved in the dairy industry. What technologies are you especially interested in learning about at this year’s expo? I’m interested in robotic milking. I also want to look at what’s new in alfalfa and corn seeds. I’d like to see what’s new for forages. What are three must-do’s for you when you attend the expo? I like to look at the cows, look at new machinery and equipment and go through the forage building. What is your favorite memory from expo? Nothing specic, it’s just nice seeing people that I only get to see at expo. Tell us about your farm and your plans for your dairy this fall. We have a family-run dairy where we milk 110 cows and run 340 acres of corn, alfalfa and soybeans. We have an insulated, tunnel-ventilated, three-row freestall barn. We milk in a double-10 rapid exit parlor. After a re last fall, we built a new dry cow facility this spring.

“We enjoy it because you can glean a wealth of information there.” What are three must-do’s for you when you attend the WDE? We always attend the Semex tent outside the coliseum. We enjoy seeing the lineup of good cattle. We usually see a number of cows from sires we have used in our milking herd. We usually watch the cattle shows for a while until the children get tired of sitting. We also attend the Investors Community Bank booth because that’s who we have our farm loan with and our banker is always there. What is your favorite memory from WDE? We always meet Valerie’s parents there and spend the day together. The children love to have Grandma and Grandpa along for a day off the farm and Grandpa
sometimes takes us out for supper at a small family restaurant in Madison.
Tell us about your farm and your plans for your dairy this fall. Our farm consists of 55 to 60 registered Holsteins. We raise all our heifers and a few bulls to sell for breeding. Our rolling herd average is a little over 30,000 pounds. We spend a lot of time on cow comfort and good quality feed. We grow around 180 acres of corn and alfalfa each year, which keeps us especially busy in the spring and the fall. This fall we plan to build a dry cow facility to better house the dry cows. It will have sand bedded freestalls, as does the milking herd, and more room for them to exercise.
HUBBARD’S NEXT GENERATION CALF FEEDING PROGRAM Kurtis and Valerie Oberholtzer Hillsboro, Wis. Vernon County 49 cows How many years have you attended WDE? We’ve attended six out of the last eight years. But, we both attended with our families before we were married. Describe what the WDE means to you. We enjoy it because you can glean a wealth of information there. The trade show, the good genetics, and we like looking at the good cows there. What technologies are you especially interested in learning about at this year’s WDE? We are going to be checking out some outside water fountains, because we are building a dry cow facility this fall. We will also be looking at some lights that we would put in that, as well. We also look forward to attending the A.I. booths to see the new A.I. bulls.

“... the best of everything is at World Dairy Expo.” Ken Rohe Hawick, Minn. Kandiyohi County 145 cows How many years have you attended WDE? I have gone to expo for the past 15 years. I missed last year because we were building a barn. But I plan to get back there this year. Describe what the WDE means to you. It’s the only place in the world where you can go to see the most beautiful “ladies” on four legs. I enjoy watching the cattle shows. People work really hard to get their cattle looking great. There is a lot of technology too – the best of everything is at expo. The virtual farm tours are terric too. I try to take one in every time I go.

What technologies are you especially interested in learning about at this year’s WDE? When we were planning our facility, we looked at a lot of parlors and robots. We had 2-3 years to prepare for our new barn so it was helpful looking at products at expo. Now, I’m interested in technology pertaining to improving milk production and reproduction. What are three must-do’s for you when you attend the WDE? Every year we go the exact same days so we like to take in the Red and White Holstein Show, we visit the Semex barn for the hospitality hours. You get to look at pretty “gals”, drink free beer and eat pretzels. And, we take in the Holstein sale on Friday night. It’s great seeing awesome cows go through the sales ring.
What is your favorite memory from WDE? One year, I bought an animal at a sale. I had no plans of buying anything but I put in a bid and there I was with an animal and no way to get her home. It worked out OK though. I found someone to haul her home. Tell us about your farm and your plans for your dairy this fall. My two sons and I milk 145 cows, raise our heifers and crop 437 acres of crops. We also purchase crops for feed from a neighbor. We built a six-row, cross-ventilated barn with a parlor last year. Our focus now is to improve genetics. We do a lot of genomic bulls and IVF work. With the help of a third son, I also run a trucking company where we run 11 trucks.
SQUAWKING BELONGS IN THE HENHOUSE. NOT YOUR PARLOR.
THE LOW-SLIP MILKING LINER FOR FEWER FALL-OFFS, KICK-OFFS AND SQUAWKS. The new Evolution® XLO liner is loaded with features you’ll appreciate, such as:
• A round-bore liner with reinforced barrel sections and a controlled collapse point. This results in a progressive, two-stage collapse for greater vacuum stability with virtually no slips or squawks.
• A large-diameter short milk tube with compression ribs and hinge
points for greater flexibility and unit alignment on a wide range of cows.
• Large inside-diameter milk tube to promote higher milk flow with more vacuum stability.
• A longer skirt with scalloped extension combined with an inner hackle
and locking wedges to reduce twisting in 06 style shells and provide a better seal to reduce contamination inside the shell.
