We have 135 +/- milking cows plus we raise our own replacement stock. We farm about 550 acres of corn, alfalfa and grass. Fall harvest is complete but there is still a lot to be done before winter sets in.

Food security has far reaching ramifications for individuals, communities and society as a whole. Come explore the invaluable role animal source foods play in not only feeding, but also nourishing 925 million people facing food insecurity around the world. While milk production globally has doubled in recent years, it’s not keeping up with demand from population growth and the growing middle class. In fact, today we have 14% less milk available per person than we did 50 years ago – that’s the equivalent of going from having a glass of milk every day, to having to skip a glass one day a week. The benefits of consuming sufficient amounts of milk, meat and eggs help improve health and productivity – ultimately enriching people’s lives. More than just hunger, the lack of proper nutrition has a significant economic cost on every level of society. It’s estimated that two to three percent of a country’s national income can be lost to malnutrition. Globally, the annual direct cost of child malnutrition is estimated to be between $20 billion to $30 billion. Ultimately, the often-overlooked impact sufficient amounts of animal source foods provides the high-quality protein and key micronutrients essential for physical and cognitive growth and well-being. Meat, milk and eggs not only help alleviate hunger, but meet nutrition needs so people can thrive and develop, and so societies can thrive and develop too.

Dr. Fricke will overview two areas of reproductive research that have investigated new tools for reproduction. The first new tool will be the use of accelerometer systems combined with various levels of synchronization for submitting cows for first AI service. The second tool will be new methods for nonpregnancy diagnosis coupled with strategies for resynchronization of ovulation.
B. Profit Using Beef Semen, Sexed Semen, Genomics and Culling - Dr. Albert DeVries, University of Florida (1ST FLOOR: BELL/ ALEXANDER ROOMS)
The availability of sexed semen and good reproduction allows for more heifer calves to be born than may be needed. A market for crossbreed calves is also emerging. So what are good breeding decisions? Should we increases cow culling? How does genomic testing fit in these decisions? Given all these options, this presentation will show some of the most profitable strategies.
C. Keys to Raising Healthy Calves - Dr. Sandra Godden, University of Minnesota (2ND FLOOR: WILSON SUITE)
We will focus on aspects of management from birth to weaning including care of the newborn, colostrum management, nutritional management, housing and sanitation. The session will try to focus especially on some new technologies recently introduced to the dairy industry including improved methods for on-farm testing of colostrum quality, heat-treating colostrum and feeding colostrum replacers. As relates to housing, we will review pros, cons and best management practices for group housing / computerized feeding systems for calves.
D. Been There Done That - Jolene Brown, CSP (2ND FLOOR: STOCKINGER SUITE)
During this interactive session, Jolene will share take-home tools and tips for successful transition planning. Meet with members of the Maxwell family. They have seen growth, adaptation of new technology and diversification for over six generations. In the last year, the farm has expanded to 260 Jerseys, with a rolling herd average of 21,234 pounds of milk, making them the seventh highest producing Jersey herd in the U.S. This expansion was made possible by the addition of robotics. Their milk is processed on the farm into cheese, which is sold in the retail store and restaurant on site. In addition to the dairy, they are also home to a beef cow and embryo operation, a 10 thousand-head swine facility, poultry egg production, and an event center used for farm tours and public events.

After the rst year I attended with my sister Abby, we decided it was going to be a new tradition to go every year. It is a great way to get away from the farm for a day and visit with other dairy farmers, and not to mention the free ice cream. How has attending Expo benetted you and your dairy farm? Every year I pull away with something I can apply to my farm. However the most helpful year was the time I went before I started farming on my own. With all the businesses I needed in one place I was able to ask a lot of questions and get the answers I needed. Who has been the best speaker you have heard Midwest Dairy Expo? My favorite speaker I have heard so far would be Dr. Jay Lehr. The speaker I'm looking forward to the most this year would be Sandy Hansen, who owns the local feed store. Sadly, it is a early session so I won't get done with chores in time to make it. Tell us about your farm. I've been renting a farm for just about three years now where I milk 40 cows and raise the replacements.
