It is important that people understand that dairy products are healthy for everyone. Why is the dairy industry important to you, and why should it be important to everybody? I think consumers don’t think dairy farmers care about the health of the animals. I would address questions containing this belief by informing them that as a dairy farmer I spend most of my days making sure the animals are all happy and healthy. If there is one that isn’t doing well, we nd out what is wrong and get it cured as soon as possible. I also look at the animals as part of the family so I always want them to trust me with their life as I would risk my life for them. If you could pick one dairy message, what would it be and how would you deliver it? Dairy farmers look at the cattle as part of the family and we make sure that the cattle are happy and healthy. If they aren’t then we are not either. By doing this, we also help the cows relax by milking them with a machine that attaches to the cows teats and massages them as it takes the milk out. From there it travels through a pipeline to a bulk tank where it is stirred with an agitator and kept cool until the milk truck comes to take it to a plant to be processed. Through this process, the milk is never touched by human hands. This keeps it safe and nutritious for everyone. What qualities do you have that make you a good dairy princess? It is important to me to be a dairy princess so I can share my knowledge and love of farming with both kids and adults. There is so much people do not know about dairy farming and I like telling them facts of how it all works. I feel that kids who have never experienced the farming life for just a day are truly missing out because so many life lessons are learned on the farm. I would like to be able to share my enjoyment with everyone else. I am proud to say I am a farmer and being a dairy princess allows me to embrace it. It is an honor to be able to represent all the dairy farmers not only in Becker County but all over. Why is the dairy industry important to you, and why should it be important to everybody? Many people do not understand the importance of the dairy industry. If it were not for dairy farmers, there would be a big

On many food packages milk is listed in the ingredients, and do not forget about all the foods that we eat that have cheese and butter in them. I also want them to know that dairy farmers are some of the hardest working people there are. Taking care of the cows is like taking care of a bunch of kids. They need to be fed when they are hungry and taken care of when they are sick. It is not a v- daysa-week job with paid vacation, but it is a lifestyle that entitles you to work in some cases 24/7 and is an all-year job. It is important to appreciate all the work dairy farmers do. If you could pick one dairy message, what would it be and how would you deliver it? Dairy farmers are committed to caring for their animals because the animals are their way of living. If they do not treat the animals with respect, the animals will not be able to provide the farmers with the milk that they are trying to produce. Farmers are attentive to working the elds in a way that is best for the farmers and the environment. They do not want to cause any environmental issues that could potentially cause damage to the land which would cause damage to the environment. Farmers pay close attention to medications they are using to treat the animals to ensure that the medicines are not going into the milk. It is very important to farmers and plant workers to produce products that are safe and healthy to consume. It is their job to feed us all food that is safe to eat and healthy for our bodies.

I am a junior at South Dakota State University and I am studying music education. I grew up on my family’s dairy farm where we milk about 35 cows that are a mixture of Holstein, red Holstein and Jersey. What qualities do you have that make you a good dairy princess? Being a part of the dairy industry means so much to me and I want my story to be heard. One way I do that is through social media. On Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest I have bloggers that I follow, stories to share and other consumers to connect with. Proactive behavior, spreading dairy knowledge and sharing my story to eager consumers are a few qualities that I have to offer for the dairy industry. Why is the dairy industry important to you, and why should it be important to everybody? To me, the dairy industry is an inspiration. Farmers work 24 hours a day, seven days a week to provide for the world. Not only do I want others so see that inspiration, but I want to be that inspiration. Dairy products are important, and the people behind the product mean just as much. Dairy farmers work hard to provide the consumers with safe, top-quality products. No other food source can say that. If we continue to have dairy advocates, such as county dairy princesses, to go out and speak to the general public about nutritious dairy products, everybody will become more aware of the importance of the dairy industry. If you could pick one dairy message, what would it be and how would you deliver it? I love all dairy products, but the one that truly stands out, is a tall glass of low fat chocolate milk. I enjoy promoting chocolate milk to others and sharing the importance of the nine essential nutrients in this glass of milk. I would promote chocolate milk to athletes, sharing with them factual information that chocolate milk is the ultimate post workout drink. Also, I would share stories of other athletes who rely on chocolate milk, such as the athletes on Team Refuel. These people are dedicated athletes who know what you put into your

This past summer, I was fortunate enough to have a conversation with a young couple from Brazil who were visiting family who had never seen a cow in person. This experience was eye-opening because I saw how people are becoming farther away from agriculture. Why is the dairy industry important to you, and why should it be important to everybody? The importance of the dairy industry became clearer to me when my father was diagnosed with stage four cancer at the beginning of my freshman year. I saw the passion he had for the industry in his eyes and it sparked that same interest in me. This industry should be important to everyone because it provides families and individuals with nine essential nutrients at a more affordable cost then other similar items. If you could pick one dairy message, what would it be and how would you deliver it? It would be to mothers who have a family to feed on a budget. I would like to give live demonstrations to them about the variety of meals and snacks that they can cook for their families without breaking their budgets while still providing essential nutrients to their children. I would have my mother help me in this demonstration to show that agriculture is a family affair and that we love to bring wholesome, nutritious products to our families just like theirs. What qualities do you have that make you a good dairy princess? I have always had an interest in promoting the dairy industry. When I started school this fall, this interest turned into a passion. I quickly learned that consumers have many questions and many misconceptions about what we do on the farm. I realized that we must tell our story. It is this knowledge that has made me passionate about promoting the dairy industry and this passion that makes me a successful dairy princess. Why is the dairy industry important to you, and why should it be important to everybody? The dairy industry is important to me and should be to everyone because of the quality products produced that are incorporated into a healthy diet. A single glass of milk contains nine essential vitamins and minerals and only costs 25 cents. An 8-ounce serving of lowfat yogurt contains about the same amount of potassium as a banana, and one ounce of hard cheese has more protein than an egg. If you could pick one dairy message, what would it be and how would you deliver it? The care of the environment is of importance to both farmers and consumers. As farmers, we are continuously nding new ways to reduce, reuse and recycle our own resources. A way to demonstrate this in a school setting would be to create a compost bucket with the students and explain how farmers use compost and recycle every day.
Growing up on a dairy farm, I take great pride in the industry my family is a part of. The hard work, commitment and responsibility we put forth in order to produce healthy products for others to enjoy is something to be recognized. While many people may not understand the importance of the dairy industry, the many nutritional benets for consumers should not be overlooked. Dairy products are an essential part of everyone’s daily diet to maintain health and wellness and should be important to everyone. If you could pick one dairy message, what would it be and how would you deliver it? The message I would focus on would have to do with sugar content and milk. Although many people are concerned with the amount of sugar in milk, it contains much less sugar than many popular drinks and also provides the body with nine essential nutrients. My target audience for this message would be teenagers as well as adults. To give my audience a visual, I would measure out the amount of sugar in milk, pop, an energy drink and a sports drink. This would help people realize how much more sugar is in these drinks compared to milk.

Why is the dairy industry important to you, and why should it be important to everybody? The dairy industry is important to me because of its role in supporting the world. I know that the work my family does provides food for the world in a way that is safe and ethical. The dairy industry also provides jobs for millions of people while serving as a vehicle which educates consumers about the workings of modern dairy farms, along with their sustainability techniques and ethical treatment of our animals. If you could pick one dairy message, what would it be and how would you deliver it? If I had to promote one message about the dairy industry, I would choose to promote the Fuel Up to Play 60 program. Although the Midwest Dairy Association has already partnered with the National Football League, I would seek to add athletes from Major League Baseball, the NBA, WNBA, and the National Hockey League to appeal to a variety of young people and teens with the goal of inspiring them to live healthy and active lives.

Growing up on the dairy farm with my parents and two brothers taught me a lot about hard work, team work, and what it means to be a family. At St. Catherine University, and in the career choice I have selected, I get a wonderful opportunity to discuss dairy and farming with several people who have never been on a farm or have never seen a cow besides in pictures. I have a passion for talking about the dairy industry and educating people on the health benets that dairy products provide for you. Why is the dairy industry important to you, and why should it be important to everybody? The dairy industry is important to me because it is the environment I grew up with. Secondly, having grown up on the dairy farm, I understand the hard work the dairy farmer does daily in order to provide quality milk. It is important for the consumer to become educated about the product we make so they are informed, but even better, so they can help us share our passion for our product. Consumers need to know as dairy farmers we strive to make the best quality product we can by keeping our farms clean and animals healthy. I think the best way to do this is by bringing the consumer to the farm. Dairy products contain essential nutrients that we all need in a very simple and easy to obtain form. Not only in all the common products like milk, cheese and yogurt, but there are so many dairy by-products people consume and they don’t even realize that what they’re eating or drinking comes from dairy! My friends and I all workout at our local gym and they were astonished to nd out that all the whey protein they spend hundreds of dollars on each year is a by-products from cheese. There’s a lack of awareness that I’m happy to help close with everyone I get a chance to talk with. If you could pick one dairy message, what would it be and how would you deliver it? My message would be that dairy is good for you. In my life I attribute what I consume to be the reason I’m healthy and in shape. Conveying the truths about dairy products and all the misconceptions by explaining the nutritional benets would be my rock to stand on. I would do this by speaking to nutritionists and getting them on board to support me. I would put everything on paper by creating informational brochures to hand out to people at different events. They would explain what all the different dairy products are and what each one can provide the human body on a daily basis. My ideal set up would be to have booths at the county fairs, health expos and community events that would be in my traveling range to attend. As a marketing major, I have all the programs to design my own brochures, posters or any other type of handout I could come up with, which would be really fun to use for the dairy industry.

I would pick Three Everyday, which means that everybody needs to get three servings of dairy products a day. This is an important message because it relates to everybody. I would have them participate in the discussion rather than having me just stand there and talk, because they would get more out of the message that way.

I gained a true respect for agriculture my freshman year when I joined FFA. I learned that there are many misconceptions about not only the dairy industry, but agriculture as a whole. I took on leadership roles and served as my FFA chapters reporter, vice president and president. With my new knowledge, it became a passion to better educate the public. Why is the dairy industry important to you, and why should it be important to everybody? The dairy industry is important because a world without it would be economic chaos. The dairy industry does not only provide us with products rich in essential nutrients but the income of thousands of families. To get the calcium from one 8-ounce glass of milk, people would have to eat eight cups of spinach. Getting all that calcium from the cows creates many jobs and every dollar earned multiplies throughout the economy. If you could pick one dairy message, what would it be and how would you deliver it? The nutritional value of avored milk in schools is important. With an increase in child obesity rates many schools are dropping chocolate milk as a lunch time option. When avored milks are not offered at schools, kids are less likely to choose milk over fruit juice or soda. Removing avored milk doesn’t lower the added sugar intake but taking it out would remove critical nutrients for development and growth.

If you could pick one dairy message, what would it be and how would you deliver it? Dairy products are the main contributor of calcium in a person’s diet. Calcium is one of the minerals we need so our bodies are working efciently. Calcium is used for many things in the body like muscle contraction, keeping the heart at a steady pace, forming healthy bones and teeth, and sending nerve pulses. Eliminating dairy from a diet means nding another source of calcium and that’s hard to do.
My family and I live on a farm in south central Minnesota. We average about 75 Holstein calves on our farm. We raise the bull calves up to 400-500 pounds. We raise the heifer calves to about 600 pounds and then transfer them to a custom calf raiser. When they reach breeding age, they go to a breeding facility and then to Sahrside Dairy. I have also worked at Sahrside Dairy, which my dad manages, where they milk 1,200 cows. What qualities do you have that make you a good dairy princess? It is a real honor for me to be able to represent the hard-working dairy farmers of Faribault County. It is very important to me to promote the dairy industry because of its impact on my family. I believe dairy farmers deserve recognition for their long hours and determination. Why is the dairy industry important to you, and why should it be important to everybody? The dairy industry is a 24-hours a day, seven days a week job. Cows don’t stop milking just because it’s the weekend or a holiday. Therefore, dairy farmers require an extraordinary level of commitment to their animals and their farm. If you could pick one dairy message, what would it be and how would you deliver it? A healthy and happy cow will produce larger quantities of better quality milk; therefore, it is very important to dairy farmers to keep their cows comfortable.

The one dairy message I would choose is telling young mothers the importance of dairy in their children’s diets. During an elementary school visit I would give them a sample of milk, yogurt and cheese and have them brainstorm a creative recipe for a snack or breakfast. It’s important that everybody recognizes the relationship between good health and dairy products. As a dairy princess, I hope to be that bridge connecting farmers to consumers. If you could pick one dairy message, what would it be and how would you deliver it? I would bring up the issue of lactose intolerance and how it’s not only manageable, but preventable, too. I’d hope to get the message across through blogging or public speaking events that raise awareness that milk products are essential to the diet. I would help them discover that incorporating dairy at a young age or continuing to consume it can eliminate the intolerance all together. I think sharing that knowledge can help to deliver a positive message so that everybody can be a dairy lover.

I have a positive attitude. I also believe it is important for the public to know where their food comes from. The dairy industry is important to me because my family has been a part of it for many generations, and it is how my family makes their living. It’s not only our family business, it’s our way of life. It should be important to everyone because the dairy industry helps feed a growing population around the world with nutritious and delicious dairy products. If you could pick one dairy message, what would it be and how would you deliver it? My message to the public would be to show how dairy farmers truly care for their animals. Sending this message to the public can be difcult with many people being misinformed. I would bring those directly involved with dairy farm life, producers, princesses, etc., face to face with the public. I would do this by either bringing people to the farm or bringing the farm to them, showing them live dairy animals.

If I did not live on a dairy farm, I would not be the hardworking, determined person I am today. Farming has taught me to work for what I want and to treat animals and the environment with care. I would plan on going to the elementary schools and telling the kids about the benets of dairy foods. Dairy farmers are committed to providing a high-quality product. It begins with taking care of the cows rst and that is what farmers do. They take pride in their work and provide their animals with a nutritious diet, good care and a comfortable environment. Dairy products go through a strict quality control before it reaches consumers. All milk is wholesome, safe, nutritious and important for the body. The dairy industry touches everyone’s life in one way or another. The dairy industry is more than the farmer; it includes everyone involved in getting the product to the consumer. If you could pick one dairy message, what would it be and how would you deliver it? As an athlete, I realize the importance of dairy in the diet along with exercise. This is the message I would like to deliver to the public. Dairy products give you strong bones and teeth and are one of the healthiest products for you. I would discuss the importance of getting three dairy servings of dairy products a day in a diet and not eliminating a product that been proven to be healthy. My current involvement in the dairy industry includes helping custom raise 250 dairy heifers. Sometimes unexpected events happen on the farm, and it seems as if everyone drops what they are doing to come help, even neighbors, no matter the time of day. Giving to others has and continually will be rewarding. The most powerful way to succeed in life is getting lost in others feelings, thoughts and aspirations. dairy message I want to share is how proud my family and I are of what we do. In my family, we all work as a team to help the farm continue to operate and grow. Living on a dairy farm, we take pride in the animals we raise, how they are cared for and the importance of the dairy industry to our state. When a group of people become passionate about what they do, you can see it. A way to get this message out is to start by showing people in the community what your farm means to you. This is done by farm tours and sharing about the industry at county fairs, community events and celebrations. The dairy industry is like a chain reaction which needs to be spread from farm to farm, county to county and across the states. I am a sophomore at South Dakota State University majoring in dairy science and minoring in food safety. I grew up on a dairy farm outside of Russell, Minn. Growing up on a farm has taught me hard work, dedication and has inuenced me to pursue a career in the dairy industry. I believe it is important to provide and promote good quality dairy products and healthy choices for all ages. This is important for everyone as dairy products are proven to provide essential nutrients to a person’s well-being. As a child, I had always loved visiting my family’s dairy farm to see all of the cow and newborn calves. The dairy industry is important to me because it has always been a part of my life. Even though I don’t live on a dairy farm, I spend most of my free time at the Tuman Farm. Being a part of the dairy industry has enabled me to work within the dairy industry to promote and be an advocate for all the dairy farmers and dairy cattle not only in Minnesota but in the entire United States. If I were to give a message to the public about the dairy industry, I would stress how much dairy farmers care about their cows. I would give consumers a tour of the dairy farm where I work. During the tour, I would show how during each stage of a dairy cow’s life the animals are given the most care so they are able to live a long and healthy life. I would also be sure to explain just how much time and effort dairy farmers put into a day to ensure their cows are happy.

I have many qualities that qualify me as a good dairy princess. One, I am an extroverted person. I love interacting and talking with my community and other communities, especially when it involves spreading the goodness of the dairy industry. I also have the quality of always having a smile on my face. Being a dairy princess entails that you will be in the spotlight during parades or promotional events. Why is the dairy industry important to you, and why should it be important to everybody? The dairy industry is extremely important to me because it is my life. Growing up on a farm is the life I know. Without the inuence and life lessons I learned while working on the farm, I would not be the individual I am today. Besides that, the dairy industry should be important for everyone. Milk contains vital nutrients such as calcium, vitamin D and vitamin A, which are all needed for human functioning. Plus, without milk, what else would you dip chocolate cookies in? If you could pick one dairy message, what would it be and how would you deliver it? One important dairy message I would choose is the concept: “Cows come rst.” Care and love towards cows are important. Without proper care, the cows will not produce milk. Without high milk production, a farmer’s income would not be a success and dairy products would be low. To help deliver my message, I would use my farm and wellknown farmers around the area for examples as to how and what farmers do to help improve cow care and why it is important for not only the farmer, but also for the consumers. The dairy industry is important to me because it has been a part of my life for 13 years. The dairy industry has given much of my family jobs and provides foods for millions of people. It should be important to everyone, because many don’t know how milk goes from the cow to market and yet they consume dairy products daily. If you could pick one dairy message, what would it be and how would you deliver it? If I had to pick one dairy message it would be that animals are taken care of in the best possible way. I would tell how farmers take care of their cattle by making sure barns are clean, bedding is changed, water is always available, and their health is as best as possible by having regular vet checks. I would give the example of how at the farm we work for, there is a back scratcher for the cows and a sprinkler system to help keep them cool during the summer.

I grew up in the dairy industry. Being born and raised on a dairy farm, working on the farm and at the Davis Dairy Plant and striving for a career in the industry helped me realize the dairy industry is my life. This industry is my livelihood now, and will continue to be for the rest of my life. The United States has only one percent of the world’s cows, but we are the leaders in pounds of milk produced. I think that is pretty amazing. It is facts like this that make me proud to be involved in the dairy industry. I want the public to know just how amazing the cows are that make such a wholesome, nutritious and good-tasting product, and how the dairy industry impacts everyone from ages 1 to 100-years-old. If you could pick one dairy message, what would it be and how would you deliver it? Dairy Foods are wholesome, nutritious, and good tasting is a message I am passionate about sharing. I would bring in samples of various dairy products and display boards with facts and statistics to justify my claims. I would ask a certied dietician to make an appearance and say a bit on behalf of dairy. I would then follow up with a short speech and handout to take home.

Dairy products are very nutritious. They have nine essential nutrients that your body needs to get from your diet. This is why the Dietary Guidelines recommend three servings a day of dairy. If you could pick one dairy message, what would it be and how would you deliver it? How food gets from the farm to you. It would probably be hosted on a dairy. First people could tour the farm and see the cows and clean barns. We can discuss the work and jobs needed to keep the cows healthy. In the parlor they can see the milk being harvested. I can show how a milk truck comes to pick up the milk and brings it to a processing plant. I would explain pasteurization and products such as cheese and yogurt. I believe putting a face on the dairy industry is exactly what consumers need to feel a little bit closer to the farm. Even if it’s answering that no, brown cows don’t give chocolate milk, it’s the little things that count. Dairy farms feed millions everyday with their wholesome, nutritious, and good tasting products. Farmers promote milk as nature’s most perfect food, and we deliver. No matter what product a consumer chooses, they can be assured that it will taste delicious and be nutritious.

Everyone should include these well-rounded products in their diet because they are wholesome and have multiple nutrients in one serving that many other foods combined would have to be eaten to replace them. If you could pick one dairy message, what would it be and how would you deliver it? The fact that milk and many dairy products contain nine essential nutrients is a very important message that many probably forget. Going into a school or classroom to do a presentation on calcium, riboavin, protein, phosphorus, potassium, vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin B12 and niacin would be ideal. Similar to the demonstration of putting only the amount of sugar back into an empty drink bottle for a visual aid of how much sugar was originally in the drink, one probably could add different particles, symbolizing the different components of milk into an empty cup, for example water, protein, etc.

Growing up, one of my favorite projects has been showing my Red and White cattle at the county and state fairs. What qualities do you have that make you a good dairy princess? It is very difcult to describe in words how a dairy princess like myself feels representing an industry where we have deep connection and roots. Living on a dairy farm has taught me more than I can mention. It has shaped me into the person I am today with a different outlook on life than if I had not grown up milking cows. I have a hard work ethic and a desire to share my passions. Responsibility, determination and a strong deep heart help me achieve my goals. My down-to-earth and friendly personality give me the ability to make new friends and make others feel welcome and comfortable. No doubt, I strive to always act on these qualities and fulll my role as a proud dairy princess. Why is the dairy industry important to you, and why should it be important to everybody? I cannot express my gratitude to all dairy producers as well as the dairy industry as a whole. My appreciation is far beyond words and I cannot imagine my life any other way. Living on a dairy farm has been a true blessing and I pray that everyone else in this world can see the importance. It is easy to say that because I come from a dairy farm. The dairy industry is exceptionally important in our everyday lives. As consumers, I would hope the nutritional values and economic well-being is acknowledged as our farmers work hard to provide these essentials as well as the industry granting employment. Dairy products are extremely important in living healthy lifestyles. Understanding these components should be important to everyone so that we keep our farmers in business providing the elements we receive from our well-taken-care-of cows along with agriculture affecting the entire economy. I have a strong belief in living a healthy lifestyle and adequately nourishing our bodies with its needed nutrients. I would love to share this with a big audience, preferably with younger kids as they are starting to understand more of what is good for them. In addition, I would ask my dairy farming friends to help with this presentation as I would make this a hands-on experience for my audience. Using a majority of the dairy products and making some would be a must, along with breaking down the product and analyzing the nutritional value. Researching and making fun posters with different activities to do would help make this message become a success. My message would be about the sustainability of the dairy industry now and in the future, and how technology has improved the production and the efciency of producing milk. With this technology we can still produce a product that is nutritious, healthy and is produced under a high standard known as green milk. There are many who cannot eat dairy products because they were born or developed intolerance. The dairy industry has developed many lactose free products so they can now enjoy dairy products without any negative digestive problems. I believe these nutritious products should be available as an alternative where dairy products are served. Who would want to go through life without being able to enjoy delicious dairy products?

I don’t think people realize what farmers really do and how many hours they are working to produce the products we need. I would have dairy products set out from the co-op that we bring our milk to. I would give out cheese, milk, ice cream and yogurt. I would also hand out “Got Milk” and “3-Every-Day” magnets. Allowing them to see a cow being milking would really make them see what farmers do. Some people have never been to a farm, so it would be a great experience for them. Farmers give so much to their animals and crops. I would describe these products to people by using examples. There is such a wide variety of dairy products. They range from avored milk, ice cream, cheese or yogurt. Almost everyone can nd at least a few products they love. I would demonstrate nutrition by showing a chicken bone soaked in vinegar versus a chicken bone soaked in milk. The strength of the bone in milk versus the brittle bone in vinegar would show the effects of calcium and eight other essential nutrients to our bodies.

I would start with a story about the process of making the product and tell people the different steps that we take to ensure that the product is healthy and nutritious. Then I would end by giving each of them a dairy product, like cheese or yogurt. The dairy industry plays a vital role in our economy which is why it’s not only important for me but should be important to everyone. I would pick the dairy message; “Dairy Products are wholesome, nutritious and good tasting.” I would deliver this to students who are in physical activities and inform them that drinking just a simple glass of milk will benet them greatly. Milk contains nine essential nutrients that the body needs for its everyday functions. Consuming milk will allow their bodies to excel in the physical activity they are partaking in.

I would love to talk about the nutritional benets of dairy products. I would want do this to at fairs, schools or grocery stores and provide healthy treats people can make. I want them to be more familiar with the nutrients in milk, cheese and yogurt. I would tie in child obesity by having avored milk as a replacement for pop and making smoothies from milk, yogurt and fruit as a sweet treat. Also while I was informing people of how healthy dairy can be if they are creative, I would give them handouts on healthy alternatives.

I am a sophomore at North Dakota State University majoring in crop and weed science and minoring in agribusiness. I have two on-campus jobs which are research projects in the NDSU greenhouse and the Trisha Molitor, 20 NDSU beef and dairy catDairy Star Sponsor: tle research farm. I live on Modern Farm a small family dairy farm, Equipment which was my job through Sauk Centre, MN high school and still is to 320-352-6543 this day. The Molitor family farm milks 80 Holsteins twice a day. This is a large responsibility, and I am fortunate my parents pay me for my work. I also relieve my father from milking, so he can accomplish other jobs on the farm. The Molitor farm grows 150 acres for corn and alfalfa; all the crops grown are fed to the cattle. I have raked alfalfa rows together and brought round bales home. Other jobs I help with are running the cows in and out of the barn, treating cows with medication, and sorting cattle in our youngstock building. What qualities do you have that make you a good dairy princess? The strengths I possess that would help me in a dairy princess role would be knowledge, condence and my outgoing personality. I am a people person and I love the agricultural background because it has blessed me with so many memories and an experience people need to understand. I am a good public speaker, which I feel I can use to communicate well with others. I have a good fashion sense, which can always make me look presentable and serious about what I want to get across to people. I’m the fth generation of my family’s dairy farm and have always had a passion for working with animals. On our dairy farm, we milk about 40 cows. Having grown up on a dairy farm and working with cows my entire life, my passion for agriculture has driven me to want to work in the industry. While growing up, I’ve been involved in many aspects of the agricultural industry that promote dairy to the general public. Through these experiences, I’ve become acutely aware of the lack of knowledge the average non-agricultural person has about where their food comes from and how the dairy industry works; it’s important to understand the process of how your food goes from the farm to your dinner table. This realization has only fueled my desire to personally learn more to better communicate and educate the specics of the agricultural industry to others. If I could pick one message it would be: “Go out and discover dairy.” Many people understand that their milk comes from a farm, but a lot of them have never seen a cow, let alone visited a dairy barn. With this message, people could actually go out and see where their dairy products come from. I would want the farmers to help, so the public could meet the people who provide them with dairy products. I would have farm tours, including tours during milking hours, and more events where people could experience hands-on dairy projects. Through my message, people could see for themselves and have a better understanding of how hard farmers work to keep their cows comfortable and how much hard work pays off.

As a farm kid one learns life-skills in a hands-on environment. These skills have made me more mature in how I approach everyday life. This knowledge and experience is something many people never learn. I am able to share my values with others. The next reason is more important because it directly affects the dairy industry. This involves the idea that as a dairy princess I can be an advocate for dairy farms, dairy families and consumers of dairy products. I will research issues within our industry and speak to those who can benet and inform all of us about aspects within the industry. I strongly believe in the future of the dairy industry in Minnesota and what I can contribute. Why is the dairy industry important to you, and why should it be important to everybody? I believe the general public and consumers today have a very negative picture of big dairies. They do not understand the knowledge and education of those working on those large dairy farms, nor do they understand the benets they can bring to small, rural areas, such as Murdock, Minn. I also believe they have a very poor understanding of the care, medicines and hormones used on a typical dairy farm and what that means for consumers and farmers. Within my FFA chapter I have done extensive research on the proper bedding for dairy cows. They have it better than I when compared to my own bed! I do not think the general public understands the care involved for the animals and within the barn, nor do they understand or see the benets of higher education to a dairy farm or the dairy industry. If you could pick one dairy message, what would it be and how would you deliver it? Everyone learns differently. In our world of advancing technology I would say, “Let’s show everyone how it’s done in Minnesota!” There are so many aspects of this industry people do not see, nor do they understand. We are recycling our manure to use as bedding in our barns. We are calling doctors of animal nutrition to feed our cows. We must have the oor of our milkroom in our barn very clean. These things all directly contribute to the products we produce. I believe we can show people better and faster than we can tell them.

I would explain the steps and processes taken to improve cow comfort. On my farm cow comfort is a number one priority. We make sure that the cows have dry sawdust to lie on, and that the stalls are well kept and clean. It’s important that the cows have low stress levels and can focus their energy on being healthy.

Growing up on a dairy farm and being involved in the dairy industry has always been an important part of my life. It has instilled in me a strong work ethic, time management and responsibility. These skills have allowed me to be the successful young woman I am today. The dairy industry is signicant to communities as it provides one of nature’s safest and most nutritional foods for all ages, and employs thousands of people across the state of Minnesota. If you could pick one dairy message, what would it be and how would you deliver it? An important message to communicate to the public is the healthy effect the dairy industry has on our planet. A main concern consumers have always had is where their food comes from and how it is being produced. They want to know the dairy farmers producing their food, what farms are like and how cows are being treated. When delivering this information, I would use examples from our farm and the steps we take to protect the land around us, from rotating crops, recycling and replenishing nutrients in the ground through fertilization. Secondly, I would explain how the animals are cared for, starting with the comfortable environment they are surrounded with and the nutritional care they receive. Having another dairy producer present to answer questions and bringing feed samples as props helps the audience visualize and gain more understanding of a dairy farm.

I love to inform people of all ages about the importance of wholesome, nutritious, and good tasting dairy products. Why is the dairy industry important to you, and why should it be important to everybody? The dairy industry is important to me because it is not only my family’s way of life but it is also my way of life. I have worked on our family farm since I was old enough to walk and it is a good way to spend time with family. I think it should be important to everybody because farmers feed the world. Dairy farming also nancially benets the community by supporting all the local stores, elevators, milk plants, truck drivers, fuel companies, and seed distributors. It gives the local community employment. If you could pick one dairy message, what would it be and how would you deliver it? If I could pick one dairy message I would pick: “My family and I are proud of what we do.” My dairy farm is a vegeneration farm consisting of my parents and their six children. I am the oldest with four brothers and one sister. We all work together as a team to help to get our chores done in a timely manner. We are proud of the cattle we raise and the milk that we produce for consumers.

I think a blog would be a great way to educate consumers about the dairy industry and promote the healthy benets of dairy products. Many of today’s consumers live in cities and are far removed from farming and rural life. We need to use social media tools to educate them about the dairy industry how dairy farmers care about the land where they live and work and provide the best care for their cows, which are the essence of their business.

The dairy industry is important to me because the people in it are dedicated to producing healthy and delicious dairy products that benet consumers across their state and country. This should be important to all people because without farmers willing to do their job, we would have very few dairy products to purchase at grocery stores. With this, consumers wouldn’t be able to include a nutritional necessity in their everyday diets. If you could pick one dairy message, what would it be and how would you deliver it? I would inform athletes about the benets of refueling with chocolate milk after exercise. Many athletes are unaware of the package of nutrients chocolate milk has to offer. It is a great choice for a post-exercise beverage. I would do a presentation to athletes about examples of typical post-exercise beverages (protein shakes etc.) and compare it to chocolate milk to emphasize the benets of the milk. I would give out chocolate milk samples and have big name athletes be present to support drinking chocolate milk.

The dairy industry should be important to everyone, dairy farmers work hard everyday in hopes that they can continue to feed America. If you could pick one dairy message, what would it be and how would you deliver it? The dairy message I would spread is the importance of having three dairy products everyday. I would deliver it by showing people how easy it is to consume three servings each day and how hard it is to receive them elsewhere. I would inform them about the health benets, like the nine essential nutrients and what dairy products can do for them, like building strong bones and muscles and preventing osteoporosis. I would deliver this message on my own, but with the help of milk and other informational props.

The community of dairy farms ensures product freshness since milk goes from cow to grocery store in three days. Few items are so fresh, and so truly home grown. Currently milk is an all natural, nutrient-packed drink like no other beverage. To get this message out, I envision myself in a chemistry lab surrounded by the essential minerals that are in one glass of milk compared to sport drinks, soda, and juice. I would show that milk is the clear choice with its abundant minerals, nutritional value, and natural great taste.

not only boosts our state’s economy, but impacts everyone’s lives through its role as an important and necessary nutrient. On a personal level, it allows my family and many others to farm with love and passion. It also provides employment as it makes its way to the tables of our citizens, where it is a source of calcium and eight other important nutrients that fuels and motivates our communities. If you could pick one dairy message, what would it be and how would you deliver it? A dairy message I am passionate about is the care dairy farmers show for their cattle. To share this, I would work with farmers to organize a hands-on eld trip to farms and teach attendees about a day in the life of a dairy cow. Not only would it increase knowledge, but it would also encourage appreciation for hard work both farmers and cattle do in order to produce a necessary product in our lives.

The dairy industry became important to me growing up on my grandparent’s dairy farm when they gave me my rst Jersey heifer calf. My grandparents showed me that dairy farmers work hard everyday to produce a wholesome and nutritious dairy product. Now the Bakebergs have furthered this lesson by showing me how to provide good care of the animals on the farm. Also, dairy products should be important to everyone because it contains nine essential vitamins that help build strong bones to live an active life. If you could pick one dairy message, what would it be and how would you deliver it? The dairy message I would love to deliver is that dairy farmers take good care of their cows every day of the year. This message is important because we are now three generations removed from the farm and the public sometimes has misconceptions of how we care for our cattle. I would want to deliver this message by making a video showing how we care for the animals everyday at Goldview Farms. I would ask for help to deliver this message from our veterinarians, nutritionist, breeder, hoof trimmer, milk truck driver and the Bakebergs to show how many people work together to care for the dairy cattle on the farm.

My one dairy message would be that most U.S. farms are family owned and hold high standards of care for their animals. The best way to demonstrate this in my mind is to have a two-day event of a parade of farms. Just as they have in the cities a parade of homes, a parade of farms would allow communities to see working farms in action. I would need many volunteers, and farmers to help pull it all together. At the event there would be milking contests, bottle feeding calves, cow train for kids, speakers, as well as businesses to show what happens on a day at the farm. Milk and ice cream would be served. There would be one large farm that held most of the activities. The others would be part of the scavenger hunt. Each farm would have something different to learn about and after the tour and learning opportunity, the farm would be checked off on a sheet. After all the farms were visited the consumer would get a prize and a chance to show a dairy cow, win a truck, or be a dairy princess for a day. Other prizes would include stuffed cows for kids and goodie bags. This would allow the community to not only experience a bit of farm life but to also help on the farm with cattle care. Allowing someone to experience things on their own is the best way to convey a message.

Path to 60th Princess Kay title underway Princess Kay Finalists to be named May 19 in St. Joseph
ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – This year the Princess Kay of the Milky Way title marks its 60th anniversary and on May 19, the 12 women vying for that title will be named. Dozens of dairy princesses from across Minnesota will gather at the College of St. Benedict in St. Joseph May 17-19 to participate in workshops and judging. At the weekend’s conclusion, the Princess Kay of the Milky Way nalists will be announced. Princess Kay is crowned the night before the Minnesota State Fair opens and serves as the dairy industry’s goodwill ambassador for a year, helping people understand the dedication of dairy farmers to wholesome and nutritious food, and the way milk is produced. Dairy farmers sponsor the dairy princess program through Midwest Dairy Association. The nalists will be named May 19 during a luncheon beginning at noon at the Gorecki Center at the College of St. Benedict. The public is invited to view the event free of charge, but tickets for the meal may also be ordered for $20 through Seena Glessing at seena.glessing@gmail.com or 320-282-6337. PAUL, Minn. – Josh Miller, a student from Basswood Elementary School in Maple Grove (District 279), experienced a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet renowned business leader Warren Buffett at Berkshire Hathaway’s annual meeting in Omaha, Neb. today as part of GENYOUth Foundation’s AdVenture Capital grant program. Miller was one of ve students serving as a Student Ambassador for Fuel Up to Play 60, the nation’s largest in-school wellness program created by National Dairy Council and the National Football League, in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Students were selected for submitting an entrepreneurial idea to give their classmates greater access to healthier food and physical activity.Basswood Elementary will receive $4,000 from GENYOUth Foundation to implement Miller’s “Motivational Mondays,” a 30-minute weekly exercise program. “I’m excited that we’ll be able to get a structured physical activity program going at our school,” Miller says. “We’re trying to solve the problem of kids just standing around at recess, and the benets that we will receive from the program are endless. Getting fresh air and exercise helps you in school, and we can also build a sense of community, because a program like this with stations, music, and incentives for participating will
include everybody. That is what I love about Fuel up to Play 60: It can help anyone.” During his meeting with Buffett, Miller shared his winning idea to improve school wellness and received feedback and advice from the business magnate.
