Ramirez’s herd is housed in an open freestall barn, where they have free choice feed that is pushed up to the bunks several times throughout the day. “Our infrastructure is different than other farms in the area and also size,” Ramirez said. The average herd ranges from 80 to 120 cows. Being the herd manager at Rancho La Leonera, Ramirez oversees all daily duties of the 270-some-cow dairy, rst beginning with morning milking, which takes 3.5 hours. Cows are milked in a double-10 herringbone parlor in the morning and evening. “After morning milking is completed, I walk through the pens and monitor all the cows, clean and bed pens, and feed the daily ration,” Ramirez said. “Usually when I’m done, I can spend about four hours with my family.” Another employee monitors the calves that are housed in individual, gated pens throughout an open barn. Being milked twice a day, the herd of Holsteins and Jerseys produces roughly 18,000 pounds of milk per day. Shipped directly to the processing plant, Prolea, located in Acatic, Ramirez’s milk is pasteurized and further processed. In Mexico, there are 20 processing plants that handle 90 percent of all the uid milk supply. The plant that Ramirez is a part of prides themselves in products derived from dairy, such as cheese, yogurt, cream and even caramel. “The price I receive for my milk depends on how my milk is further

processed,” the Mexican dairyman said. Currently, dairy farmers are receiving an estimated $16.72 per hundredweight. Consumers will pay anywhere from $2.90 to $6.55 for their dairy products at the convenience stores. “What makes where I dairy unique, is that we are better off organized as a cooperative than individuals selling to different processors,” Ramirez said. “Although, as we look
ahead, I am concerned about the increasing supply of alternatives for dairy products and the dumping of milk because of prices.” With Ramirez’s concerns, he also holds a job off the farm, as do many of the 150,000-some dairy producers in Mexico because of the dairy market.
