We have attended every year since the rst expo was held at the Ramkota Inn exhibit hall and had about 30 vendors set up. What are you looking forward to most at this year’s Central Plains Dairy Expo? I am looking forward to attending a breakout session and Kim is looking forward to the crowning of the 60th South Dakota Dairy princess, as we always seem to be familiar with at least one of the contestants. What is the best product or piece of information that you have taken home from a previous Central Plains Dairy Expo that you’ve incorporated into your farm? We have incorporated several products that we rst learned about at CPDE. Our BigAss fans and Select Detect system top our list of favorites. What makes the CPDE different than other expos? The biggest difference for us is the fact that the CPDE is held during the time of year when dairy farmers/ producers are not in the elds chopping silage, making hay, etc.

What are three things you must do while at CPDE? We always try to make contact with the vendors we have done business with, attend the welcome reception to take in the entertainment, and take advantage of free dairy products provided by the many sponsors.

Tell us about your farm. Harringa Dairy is a rst generation farm established on Jan. 8, 1990. We have two daughters, Kayla and Krista. Our herd is made of 100 registered Holsteins. We raise all of our replacement heifers and sell the overrun and nish our bull calves to market weight. Cows are milked in a double-8 parallel parlor and housed in a loose housing barn. We raise corn, soybeans, and wheat on 1,000 acres.

Heat stress critical to a dairy’s bottom line

Baumgard to highlight the importance of keeping cows cool BY KRISTIN OLSON Staff writer

The combination of heat and humidity can greatly impact a cow’s body temperature, leading to a reduction in feed intake and milk yield. Dairy farms, however, are losing much more than just milk production in times of heat stress. Lance Baumgard, Ph.D., professor of Nutritional Physiology at Iowa State University, will provide insight to this important issue during a breakout session – presented by Techmix – at the Central Plains Dairy Expo on Wednesday, March 25, and again on Thursday, March 26. First and foremost, Baumgard will give dairy producers a good reminder about Lance Baumgard the big influence heat stress has Iowa State University on a dairy’s bottom line. “I don’t think, oftentimes, people have a good appreciation for the financial aspects of heat stress,” he said. “[Or] how modern, high-producing dairy cows are more susceptible. The more milk a cow makes, the more likely she is to be heat stressed at a lower temperature.” The financial burden of heat stress extends far beyond the visible decrease in milk production. Baumgard said that while producers may recognize the decrease in milk yield right away, other long-term financial consequences exist, including conception rates, embryo survivability and the negative results of rumen acidosis. These are costs that – if a dairy producer is not paying attention – may fly off of the radar screen. “It’s hard to quantify what that’s costing producers,” he said, alluding to pregnancy checking as an example. “[You] don’t realize until a month later, if you’re not paying attention, you may not recognize it was a heat stress event.” Baumgard believes the most important step in avoiding heat stress is to make sure farmers are aware that it’s a problem. Especially in the Midwest, not all producers acknowledge heat stress as a big issue. After showing dairy producers the financial effects heat stress can have on their business, Baumgard said the next step is to convince them the biggest thing they can do is physically modify the environment cows live in. He said, in a perfect world, the most efficient modification would be air-conditioned barns, but seeing that isn’t a financially feasible option, producers can still go to less efficient but much cheaper strategies. “The main thing that producers have to realize is that if they have to prioritize one strategy over the other, it has to be heat stress abatement strategy,” he said. “Primarily shade, cooling fans, physically modifying the environment is paramount. Once the producer has done everything they can to modify the environment, then we can start talking about dietary strategies and things to maintain rumen health, avoid rumen acidosis and avoid dehydration.” Baumgard will highlight that each farm is different, and each producer may have different circumstances. “In general, [I] like to put soakers up on the feed line so the cows can get wet while eating, and when they go back to the freestalls, that’s when they’re hit with the fans,” he said. “Water evaporates off of their back, and you avoid the sloppiness in the freestalls.” More on Baumgard A native of southwest Minnesota, Dr. Baumgard was raised on a row crop and pig farm. He got his BS and MS degrees from the University of Minnesota and his PhD from Cornell in 2001. Currently a professor of nutrition physiology at Iowa State University, Baumgard has spent many years researching the metabolic and endocrine consequences of heat stress in both ruminant and monogastric farm animals.

We can handle 260 baby calves and can raise them up to 600 pounds. How many years have you attended the Central Plains Dairy Expo? About 10 years. What are you looking forward to most at this year’s Central Plains Dairy Expo? Seeing friends, seeing new things in the calf world and attending breakout sessions to nd out what’s working as far as calf health. What is the best product or piece of information that you have taken home from a previous Central Plains Dairy Expo that you’ve incorporated into your farm? The best product I would say is a chain and loop to hold gates shut. It works great. I also like breakout sessions comparing different company’s products. What makes the CPDE different than other Expos? We like the fact that not only do you get the information like a conference but also to see all the equipment at the trade show.

What are three things you must do while at CPDE? Attend the welcome reception for food and fellowship, go to the prayer breakfast because it’s a great way to kick off the day and the show, and eat ice cream because it’s free.

Tell us about your farm. We’ve been raising calves from babies for 16 years. We started out using 250 hutches and old buildings in 2005. We decided to build two 130-head nurseries, a transition barn and a grower barn to keep us and calves out of the elements. It’s worked out really well.

What are you looking forward to most at this year’s Central Plains Dairy Expo? The concert by Thompson Square sounds like a lot of fun – just like past years, the concert has been a blast. It’s always nice to walk up and down the exhibitor aisles to see what’s new and available to producers. I also look forward to meeting our supply people to talk with them and see what’s new. What is the best product or piece of information that you have taken home from a previous Central Plains Dairy Expo that you’ve incorporated into your farm? Probably just the ideas I take home. Most of the stuff there is way too big for our operation. What makes the CPDE different than other expos? My brother and I don’t go to other shows, so we wouldn’t know.

What are three things you must do while at CPDE? 1. Check in with our milk purchasers – Agropur in Hull, Iowa. 2. Take in one or two breakout sessions. 3. Sample the treats and other food.

Tell us about your farm. I have been milking cows all my life – since about 1965. In 1975, I graduated from a farm operations course in Jackson, Minn. I partnered with my Dad and brother, expanded in 1982 and have had cows ever since. We pasture our cows so we are limited by the number of pasture acres.

David is looking forward to all the vendors especially to see who the new ones are and Shirley would like to take in more of the speakers. What is the best product or piece of information that you have taken home from a previous Central Plains Dairy Expo that you’ve incorporated into your farm? Several speakers remind us to review and update our vaccination protocol. Calf hut door covers have helped keep calves warm in the severe winter weather. What makes the CPDE different than other Expos? Good price, and the free concert is nice. We enjoy the variety of speakers there.

What are three things you must do while at CPDE? Go to the concert for enjoyment, take in the prayer breakfast for inspiration, visit the vendors to seek out and compare products.

Tell us about your farm. With the help of our four children, Greg, Tiffany, Nathan and Alex, we milk 60 cows on our farm which includes 332 acres. We raise hay, corn, oats and replacement heifers. Our children were active in 4-H, FFA, and church when they were younger. Our oldest son, Greg, is working on taking over the farm from us so we have the time to go to these conferences.

Beginning at 11 a.m., Central Plains Dairy Expo attendees will have the opportunity to attend the virtual farm tour of Lely robot farm: Nussbaum’s Cottonwood Ridge Farm. During this time, Lely robotic milking experts will share their insight to the keys of a successful robotic milking operation. At the end of the morning presentation, guests will be bussed to Nussbaum’s Cottonwood Ridge Farm for the following program: Lunch, courtesy of Gorter’s Clay and Dairy Equipment Q&A session with a robotic milking producer panel At 3 p.m., participants will return to the Sioux Falls Convention Center to prepare for the enjoyment of the Central Plains Dairy Expo kick-off party. Rusty Hartke, owner of Lely Center Gorter’s Clay and Dairy Equipment, said he is excited for the opportunity this event will bring producers considering robotic milking. “It is definitely an eye-opening experience to get a feel for the efficiency of automation in a dairy operation when looking at it through the eyes of producers who are living it every day. Producers will be able to learn a lot through hearing the Nussbaum family’s story firsthand, as they celebrate their one-year anniversary of robotic milking,” Hartke said. Participation in the presentation and farm tour are free, but are only open to registered guests. We’ve always taken ideas from the expo and incorporated them onto our farm. Usually, they are smaller things, such as treating for mastitis or the way we manage vaccination protocols. What makes the CPDE different than other expos? This expo, to us, seems larger than others we have attended in the area. It’s also a much more positive atmosphere between the vendors and attendees. What are three things you must do while at CPDE? Every time we go, we must visit with dairy farmers we don’t know, look at all the booths and ask questions, as well as eat plenty of free ice cream. Tell us about your farm. We milk about 90 cows and raise all of our heifers. Also, we farm about 350 acres of hay and corn.

This year there is a session about rapid on farm culture for mastitis. We would like to do more of this at our farm. We went to a mastitis break out session and they talked about the value of treating an animal or culling an animal. We incorporated some of those practices on our farm. What makes the CPDE different than other Expos? There is a very good selection of different booths and break out sessions that you can attend. If you need information on a certain topic you can get names and numbers from different people to help you out with a problem or product. What are three things you must do while at CPDE? 1. Look through trade show to see what is new and improving in the industry. 2. Attend as many breakout sessions as possible to gain knowledge. 3. Eat! There is always good snacks and meals available. Tell us about your farm. This is a second generation (moving to 3rd) dairy farm. We milk around 370 cows using seven Lely A3 robots. We raise all of our replacement heifers and raise our own feed, which includes 750 acres of corn, 350 acres of alfalfa/hay and 100 acres wheat.

I remember attending when it was held at the Ramkota. What are you looking forward to most at this year’s Central Plains Dairy Expo? Visiting with friends, meeting with people that I haven't seen for awhile, seeing new products and the updates on older products. What is the best product or piece of information that you have taken home from a previous Central Plains Dairy Expo that you’ve incorporated into your farm? The best product which we've seen and used the past two years is the shredlage attachment to the silage cutter. What makes the CPDE different than other Expos? It's close to home, I can see it in one day – allowing other employees to check out the Expo. What are three things you must do while at CPDE? Attend the prayer breakfast, enjoy the concert, go to the breakout sessions. Tell us about your farm. My son Darren and I milk 700, three-way crossbred cows. We raise all our replacement heifers and sell the bull calves.
