What are three things that you are looking forward to most with the 2012 Central Plains Dairy Expo? The trade show with all the exhibitors. I enjoy the chance to meet and talk with fellow dairymen. The welcome reception and concert are always a great time.

Describe how you spend a typical day at the Central Plains Dairy Expo. Typically, I try to visit all the booths and, on occasion, I will attend some of the seminars. What seminars or booths are you especially interested in seeing this year? I am going to visit each booth and check out different ways to improve our operation. I am also looking forward to attending the seminar, “Successful Dairies Today – It’s the Little Things that Count!” What have you learned from a previous CPDE that you’ve taken back and incorporated into your farm? Going to a show like this gives you the opportunity to look at different ways to improve your operation. Tell us about your farm. We own and operate my parents’ farm. My wife, Sharon, and I, along with our sons, Tim and David, farm 1,300 acres, milk around 60 cows, feed out some cattle and have a beef cow/ calf operation.

Hypocalcemia (low blood calcium) is an important determinant of fresh cow health and milk production. The start of each new lactation challenges a dairy cow’s ability to maintain normal blood calcium concentrations. Milk (including colostrum) is very rich in calcium, and cows must quickly shift their priorities to adjust for this sudden calcium outflow. A cow does not necessarily have to become recumbent (down) to be negatively affected by hypocalcemia. A low clinical milk fever rate will often mask an underlying subclinical hypocalcemia problem on a dairy. With or without obvious clinical signs, hypocalcemia has been linked to a variety of secondary problems in post-fresh cows. This presentation will discuss underlying mechanisms, therapy and prevention of hypocalcemia.

What are three things that you are looking forward to most with the 2012 Central Plains Dairy Expo? We enjoy looking at the exhibits for new ideas on nutrition, equipment and cow comfort. We enjoy attending some of the seminars. We focus on business management and outlook and nutrition. We also like talking to exhibitors and seminar presenters. Describe how you spend a typical day at the Central Plains Dairy Expo. On a typical day, we spend about half the time visiting exhibits and the other half attending seminars. What seminars or booths are you especially interested in seeing this year? There are three seminars that look interesting: 1) Michael Boehlje on building an ag business, 2) growing replacement heifers and 3) feed efciency or diet cost. There may be some other seminars we may check out.
