Central Plains Dairy Expo slated for March 24-25 Extensive COVID-19 safety precautions will be in place By Jerry Nelson

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Last March, the 2020 Central Plains Dairy Expo was canceled due to the initial outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic. The Central Plains Dairy Expo gives producers an opportunity to connect with others in the industry, and to see the latest and greatest technology. This year, however, the Central Plains Dairy Expo will be held March 24-25 at the Denny Sanford Premier Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Extensive precautions will be taken to make the expo experience as safe as possible for all who attend. “The health and the safety of expo attendees and exhibitors is our top priority,” said Renee Brod, associate executive director of the Central Plains Dairy Association. “Because of this, we made the tough decision to forgo holding a welcome concert this year.” The Central Plains Dairy Expo will kick off with the Ag Prayer Breakfast, which will be held at 7 a.m. Wednesday, March 24. The doors of the Denny Sanford Premier Center will open at 6:30 a.m. “The rst 300 attendees at the Ag Prayer Breakfast will receive a free hot bag breakfast,” Brod said. “Socially distanced tables will be placed on the oor of the Premier Center. The bleachers will also be opened up for seating during the breakfast.” Jordan Merritt will be performing at the Ag Prayer Breakfast. Merritt is a worship leader and

songwriter currently serving as Creative & Worship Director at Ransom Church in Sioux Falls. In addition to leading worship, Merritt is a songwriter. He cowrote the Newsboys single, “You Hold It All,” and has written songs for multiple projects with artists including Newsboys, Selah, Travis Ryan, and others. On Wednesday, the tradeshow will open its doors to the public at 8:30 a.m. and close at 5:30 p.m. On Thursday, the tradeshow will open at 8 a.m. and will close at 3 p.m. Some of the enhanced health safety measures include up to 4,000 masks that will be made available by Zoetis. Hand sanitizer stations will be located throughout the venue. The side curtains of the exhibitors’ booths have been increased from 3 feet tall to 8 feet tall. The city of Sioux Falls currently has a mask mandate. This mandate is set to expire March 13. “If the mask mandate is extended, we will require that all attendees wear masks,” Brod said. “If the mandate is not extended, masking will be encouraged but won’t be required. We will continue to ask that all exhibitors wear masks, if possible.” Brod encourages attendees to go online to preregister for the expo. “Preregistering will greatly streamline the checkin for attendees,” Brod said. “There will be iPads placed at entry points that will be used for a fast and contactless check-in. Preregistration will make checkin a 30-second experience and will greatly reduce congestion.” All attendees should register online prior to the expo. The app can be found at www.centralplainsdairy.com/ mobile-app. “The mobile app will send out push notications

that will provide expo attendees with information about the industry-sponsored educational breakout sessions and other announcements,” Brod said. Capacity limits will be set for the breakout session rooms. The breakout session venues are also being expanded to make room for proper social distancing. The Wine and Cheese Social is slated to take place on the evening of Wednesday, March 24. The food and beverages will be prepackaged and will be served by Sanford Premier Center staff. All Sanford Premier Center staff members will undergo daily health screenings, including temperature checks. The staff will follow all COVID-19 safety protocols and will wear personal protective equipment. Sanford Premier Center staff will be constantly cleaning surfaces during the expo. A free pancake breakfast, which will be sponsored by Agropur, will be held the morning of Thursday, March 25. Touch-free coffee dispensers will be located throughout the venue. Contactless, card-only transaction concessions will also be available. “The safety of our expo attendees and exhibitors is paramount,” said Kristopher Bousquet, Central Plains Dairy Association president. “We are taking precautions and adhering to Denny Sanford Premier Center, ASM Global VenueShield Program and Centers for Disease Control (and Prevention) recommendations and checklists. We will do everything in our power to help you model the good behavior that we’re being told will keep you safe and feeling comfortable. This year’s expo will provide attendees with a safe way to interact, in person, with dairy industry representatives and others in the industry.”

Central Plains Dairy Expo eclipses 20th year of bringing industry together By Andrea Borgerding andrea.b@dairystar.com

In 2000, the South Dakota dairy industry was gradually shrinking. Exiting farms and dwindling dairy cow numbers were putting the industry in danger of disappearing altogether. That is until something completely unheard of happened in the state of South Dakota. Producers, processors, eld representatives and state regulatory ofcials came together to help salvage the South Dakota dairy industry by planning an event to unite producers. As a result, the Central Plains Dairy Expo was born and ultimately became a driving force in revitalizing the dying industry. “We were all pulling for the same thing,” Greg Moes said. “That’s what got it off the ground, the whole industry working together and making it go. Everybody had stake in it.” Moes is co-owner of Mo-Dak Dairy near Goodwin. He is one of the original dairy farmers who worked to develop the rst Central Plains Dairy Expo in 2001. Moes served on the Central Plains Dairy Expo board for the rst seven years before the Central Plains Dairy Association was formed years later. He remembers late nights scouring ag publications with fellow dairymen for possible vendors to exhibit at the rst expo. “Nobody said we could do it, but we did,” Moes said of planning the rst expo. But the dairy farmers could not do it alone. To organize the expo, they looked to South Dakota State University Extension state dairy specialist the late Kim Cassell and extension dairy eld specialist Tracey Erickson. Erickson and Cassell agreed to organize the expo by reaching out to vendors, lining up speakers, signing up sponsors and promoting the event. Held in the spring of 2001, the rst expo had between 80-90 vendors at the Ramkota Inn in Sioux Falls. “Everybody could network and talk and take steps to move the industry

Enable people to have those conversations.” Erickson has served as a board member for Central Plains Dairy Expo and currently serves on the board for Central Plains Dairy Foundation. The rst expo happened through the cooperation of the South Dakota Dairy Association, South Dakota Field Representative Association, South Dakota Dairy Producers Association, South Dakota Department of Agriculture and SDSU Dairy and Food Science-SDSU Extension. These groups served as the advisory board and provided direction for the budding event. The collaboration of these ve groups began the push for the state of South Dakota to recognize how important growth in the dairy industry was to agriculture in the state. At the time, South Dakota’s state ag development department was working with dairy processors to take the initiative of growing the industry. Erickson said the entire state worked together to push growth in the dairy sector.

“The expo played a great role in this – everybody was together in the room and everybody recognized the mission,” Erickson said. “When you put dairy producers and allied industry professionals in the room together, they like to talk to each and experience new things.” Moes agreed on the dynamic that occurred in the early years of the Central Plains Dairy Expo. “What we looked at with the Central Plains Dairy Expo and when we started to put this all together, we wanted some place to go where we could kick the tires,” Moes said. “We just wanted to visit with vendors and other producers.” After the rst successful expo, Lon and Kathy Tonneson were hired to be the event’s main organizers. The Tonnesons were key in not only the development of the expo but also the organization of the Central Plains Dairy Association. One factor discussed will be a cow’s immune status through the dry period and into early lactation, and how that affects reproductive performance. “We know there are direct effects of stress on animals’ reproductive performance, but a lot of work I’ve done is focused on the dry period, heat stress and how that potentially affects what those animals are going to do in that next lactation,” Dahl said. “A lot of it comes down to the idea that healthier cows coming through the dry period and transition into lactation can both produce a lot of milk and also have good reproductive performance.” Dahl said many in the dairy community have the idea that high milk production hinders reproductive performance. “But just because an animal is at a lower level of productivity doesn’t mean that she’s going to suddenly become reproductively competent,” Dahl said. “There are other reasons feeding into that lower productivity from the health perspective that may then negatively inuence her reproductive performance as well.” A lot of Dahl’s work has been about bovine lactation. “We think of reproduction as getting cows bred and pregnant, and then parturition,” Dahl said. “Lactation is really the nal phase of the reproductive cycle. I work mostly in the later phases.” Dahl’s interest in dairy rst came about from growing up on his family’s dairy in Massachusetts. The CPDA also formed the Central Plains Dairy Foundation which specializes in investing in the people of dairy by fundraising to establish an endowment as a non-prot organization which enables them to award scholarships, dairy innovation grants and dairy industry enhancement grants. By the third year of expo, a growing vendor waiting list pushed the event to a larger venue location in Sioux Falls. The Convention Center in Sioux Falls became the new home for Central Plains Dairy Expo in 2003, which is now known as the Denny Sanford Premier Center and Suites. “The reason why we looked to Sioux Falls was because of its proximity to the four states and the I-29 Dairy Corridor,” Erickson said. “We could draw a lot of people in that area.” The expo quickly became known as an industry gathering place for learning something new at seminars, observing new technology at the tradeshow, visiting with fellow dairy producers and partaking in fellowship and entertainment at the welcome reception and ag prayer breakfast. Moes attributes the success of the expo to the farmers on the board placing emphasis on keeping the event from becoming stagnant. “We wanted to change it up every year,” Moes said. “The welcome reception started out as a formal meal with a speaker, then to just entertainment and now to the concert. That’s what draws people to it, the social aspect of it probably as much as anything.”

Erickson said the foresight of the board to agree on transitioning in new members to keep ideas fresh has been key in keeping the expo successful. “The board continues to have strategic planning sessions to help decide what is important and what direction is needed to move forward,” Erickson said. “Having fresh ideas and vested people directly involved in the industry is what keeps the passion going.” Today, the expo is organized by Renee Brod, associate executive director of CPDA, after the Tonnesons’ retirement in July 2019. In 2019, the Central Plains Dairy Expo had 3,500 attendees, 320 vendors and 41 breakout education sessions. That year, all three buildings of the Denny Sanford Premier Center and Suites, including the convention center, arena and even the parking lot, were used to accommodate the expo’s functions – the concert, welcome reception, breakfast, exhibitor space and concessions. With the absence of Central Plains Dairy Expo in 2020 after the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, Erickson is hopeful for a great turnout this year. “People plan their vacations and their get-togethers at the expo,” Erickson said. “It’s like a big family get-together.” Erickson looks forward to seeing where the expo will go in years to come. “It’s so exciting to see the momentum of the foundation and the association to continue the growth in dairy and tell the story of the industry,” Erickson said.

Generational farm and ranch transitions can be difcult. Allen Schlenker wants to help ll a void in the dairy industry. “There’s a whole other segment of the business operation that isn’t being addressed,” Schlenker said. “This is an opportunity for me to help educate the producers about something that’s very important to their operation – insurance. It’s not the sexiest conversation or product you’ll ever talk about, but if it’s done wrong, it can be your worst nightmare.” Schlenker will present, “Overlooked Risk Exposures that may be Detrimental to your Dairy” during the Central Plains Dairy Expo March 24-25 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The rsttime expo presenter and Central Plains Dairy Expo board member is a risk management consultant for business insurance at Marsh & McLennan Agency. “In talking to literally hundreds of producers over the years, I’ve discovered in many cases insurance coverage for the modern dairy farm has not kept pace with the changing

exposures in the industry,” he said. From his presentation, Schlenker hopes he can help dairy producers get up-to-speed with changing insurance coverages and emerging exposures. In his experience, Schlenker has seen many farms continue with the same coverage year after year without taking a hard look at the coverage they have versus Schlenker the potential Allen Marsh & exposures that McLennan Agency exist. “The local family farm insurance agent may not stop to take a look at some of the emerging exposures that are impacting or can impact the modern dairy producer. ConƟnued from SCHLENKER | Page 16 and changing exposures to help producers know what they should be looking for and encourage them to start conversations with their insurance agent. “The time to nd out you’re not covered for something is not at the time of the loss,” Schlenker said. “You want to be aware of these coverage gaps before you have a loss and understand the potential ramications of your coverage decisions.” Examples of these emerging exposures are in employment practices liability, cyber coverage, and business income and extra expense coverages. Schlenker said only 4% of all businesses across any industry carry employment practices liability insurance. This provides defense for claims made regarding sexual harassment, offensive work environment, discrimination, termination and other employment related practices. “There has been a dramatic increase in the number of claims made due to the #METoo movement,” Schlenker said. “Even though the claim may be without merit, you still have to defend the claim. A farm is a business. It has many of the same exposures as any manufacturing operation out there, and producers need to be aware of what they are.” Cyber insurance is one coverage Schlenker said

not many people were discussing in the insurance world 10 years ago. “Now, cyber threats have the potential to impact every single business, whether it’s a small boutique shop in Brookings, S.D., a large industrial company, a large retail corporation like Target, an ag co-op or a dairy farm,” he said. “If someone came in and tied up your dairy farm’s computer and held it for ransom for a week or 10 days, how would that impact your business?” Business income coverage came up a lot last winter after several dairies experienced devastation from barn and parlor roof collapses. “If a dairy farmer is unable to milk his cows for an extended period due to a catastrophic loss like a roof collapse, re or tornado, who and how will the continuing expenses be paid?” Schlenker said. “The dairy farmer still has mortgages, loans, taxes and payroll. In some cases, these dairies have never contemplated how to deal with ongoing or additional expenses.” This seminar will also provide time for Schlenker to talk about how dairy farmers should develop a risk management plan. “Have people thought about what are the risks

associated with the dairies, what is the likelihood they would happen, and what controls do they have in place to prevent them from happening?” he said. Schlenker encourages in-depth conversations about what would happen to a farm’s facility in an event of a major loss. “What are they going to do with their structures? Would they rebuild as is? Rebuild with changes? Or just tear it down?” Schlenker said. “That all can impact how your insurance is written for your property and the premium that is paid.” Overall, Schlenker wants to help dairy producers have more conversations that allow them to understand the risks that could happen on their farm and the insurance options to help during these events. “Insurance can be very complicated,” Schlenker said. “Sometimes producers don’t want to deal with the insurance because they don’t fully understand it. They cross their ngers and hope they’re taken care of. What I want to do is help the producers be a better insurance consumer. I want to help them understand their coverages and help them make better buying decisions when it comes to their insurance.”

After a year of such turmoil surrounding the coronavirus pandemic and the agriculture market fallouts that resulted, Chip Whalen is hoping to provide dairy farmers with tools to protect their protability. “In many ways, producers have felt helpless over the last year, being at the mercy of the markets and powers to be,” Whalen said. “I want them to understand there are things they can do. It’s great to have an idea where the markets are heading, but it’s more important to design a strategy that takes into Chip Whalen Commodity and consideration one’s risk.” Whalen is the vice president Ingredient Hedging of education and research at Commodity and Ingredient Hedging based in Chicago. He will present, “Dairy Margin Outlook and Strategies to Consider,” March 25 at the Central Plains Dairy Expo in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The session will review the fundamentals that drive the dairy and feed markets, show where current markets stand and opportunities for prot margin exposure. Whalen knows dairy producers grasp the macro and micro factors that inuence market prices – such as ination to a degree, and also supply and demand – and the push and pull of those. For example, in the feed market, the balance between supply and demand is growing signicantly tighter from what was expected a year ago, thus creating high risk on the market. Whether using a local cash market, the exchange, an insurance program or the like, there are many tools available for farmers to manage market risk. “There are a bunch of different tools at our disposal, and our role is to teach farmers about all these tools and how they work together,” Whalen said. “How they can best use that toolbox to make the most out of managing forward protability.” In attending the seminar at Central Plains Dairy Expo, farmers should leave with a better understanding of what they can do to immediately address risk in their feed and milk markets. “This is all about striking a balance,” Whalen said. “It’s not an all-or-nothing proposition. You can allow for a better scenario to unfold while still addressing the big risk that is out there on the table.” The presentation will also be the platform for Whalen to unveil a proprietary tool his company developed to relay marketing concepts to farmers and help them strategize effectively by understanding the nuances of cost and prices. “With those tools, farmers should feel empowered and in control of what they are doing,” Whalen said. “It helps them understand how strategies will perform over time with different price outlooks and moves, so they will be prepared. This helps them better plan ahead for contingencies and adds value to their business.” Whalen has worked with farmers in helping them better understand market risks for over 25 years and has focused exclusively on education when the company further focused their efforts in this area 12 years ago. He has also been with CIH since its inception in 1999. In a given year, Whalen conducts up to 50 classes for farmers across all agriculture industries, both in CIH’s Chicago headquarters as well as around the country. I’ve missed that and hearing (farmers’) concerns, what they’re dealing with and how in some way this information is helpful.” In alignment with the show’s efforts to provide education and communication, Whalen is hopeful his presentation will meet all the expectations. Namely, better understanding strategies for market risk

and using those strategies to further the dairy business in the most appropriate way. I-29 Moo University’s Dairy Beef Short Course goes virtual

The I-29 Moo University Collaboration’s seventh annual Dairy Beef Short Course will held on March 23. Due to COVID-19 it will be offered as a webinar. The Central Plains Dairy Expo continues to deliver on its initiative to offer quality educational sessions and networking opportunities as well as robust trade show exhibits. The programming offered at CPDE will once again go one step further in presenting an array of Spanish speaking seminars at this year’s event. “Once again, we are offering seminars, in the employee’s native language, that will assist in their reallife dairy settings,” Maristela Rovai said. “We chose attractive and useful topics with hands-on experience that will enlighten and engage the workers. It is amazing to see them interact with instructors and peers. In the past, the employees were able to grasp concepts quickly because there was no language barrier. We are also empowering them in every task they handle at the farm.” Rovai, a dairy Extension specialist with South Dakota State University, will present the Spanish speaking seminar, “Dry cow therapy: Aim,

applicability and advice,” alongside Raul Mendoza, a veterinarian and herdsman, at CPDE in Sioux Falls March 24-25. They join Andrew Beckel, with Golden Calf Company, as he presents, “Is this how a calf should be tube fed?” Jorge Delgado, with Alltech, presenting, “R.E.S.E.T.-ing the dairy industry to attract and retain employees,” Fernando Diaz, with Dellait LLC, presenting, “Optimizing feed costs and dairy cow performance with feeding management,” and Jorge Luna, with Zoetis, as he presents “Milk quality and mastitis: Am I responsible?” For the sixth year, Spanish speaking seminars will be offered during the two-day dairy show. “One of the things Central Plains Dairy Expo has been doing all these years is to use these platforms to invite those workers behind the cows, behind the calves, behind the tractors, behind the crops so they can come and feel that they are a part of the industry,” Delgado said. “They are a

Attendees can learn from others’ successes and failures, and can take the information they glean from the expo back to their farms. “They go back to the dairies; Maristela Rovai they rst put into SDSU Extension practice what dairy specialist they learned, but they also feel motivated, engaged,” Delgado said. “And, they feel like they are a big part of the solution for the industry. So, they are going to be part of the dairy now, not just an employee, but they become partners.” D e l g a d o facilitated a Spanish speaking seminar when the sessions began in 2015. At that Jorge Delgado time, two sessions Alltech were offered in Spanish. Rovai rst presented in Spanish at CPDE in 2016. The feedback from the seminars has been positive. “The growth of the Spanish seminars offered is a result of the feedback from owners, managers and the employees, themselves, on asking for more information, more places they can learn, more selection,

more options,” Delgado said. “The feedback is always great. They can also communicate with people in the booths. They have access to more technologies, more questions. … It’s a good place to bond with other people in the industry.” Attendees from every aspect of the farm – milkers to maternity managers to calf managers to herdsmen – often travel to attend the expo. Rovai said she has spoken to attendees from South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska and Wisconsin. “Employees feel valued when the producers let them attend or give them the day off to attend,” Rovai said. “Many producers that I know ask the employees what they learned, and they are happy to share their experiences from both the seminars and trade show.” Rovai said CPDE will follow all recommended guidelines and regulations to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 from the coronavirus pandemic. The seminars will have an attendee limit, and seating will be spread out to allow for social distancing. “We need to have the word out there that this will be a safe event, so producers are not afraid of sending their employees,” Rovai said. In a time where chances for networking have been at a standstill due to the ongoing pandemic, CPDE perhaps offers a space for farm owners and employees to connect which is more inuential than years prior. “The Spanish talks will attract, engage and empower the employees when they get back to work,” Rovai said. “And, most importantly, it will increase their morale.”

Colostrum feeding is essential for optimal calf health. But if your administering methods are not done properly, you may be doing more harm than good. Andy Beckel founded Golden Calf Company in 2010, which focuses on supplying dairy producers with innovative calf care products, and colostrum management is one of the company’s main focuses. Beckel will present, “Wait…What! This is How You Should Tube Feed a Calf?” March 24 at 9:30 a.m. in meeting rooms 11-14 of the Denny Sanford Premier Center Complex at the Central Plains Dairy Expo in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The March 25 presentation at 11 a.m. will be in Spanish: “¿Así es como se debe alimentar por sonda a un ternero?” “I plan to share simple and straightforward tips and tricks to improve skills and condence,” Beckel said. “It will help those working in the maternity area to understand not only how to properly tube feed colostrum but also the risks that come with tube feeding.” Understanding when and why to use a tube feeder are points Beckel stresses in his teachings, but learning about a calf’s esophagus and gastrointestinal tract is helpful information needed to grasp the entire process. Attendees of Beckel’s breakout session can expect hands-on demonstrations of types of tube feeders, learning the pros and cons of each one, and tips and tricks for properly using each type. “Most importantly, the audience will gain a better understanding of calf physiology and the consequences of an improper tube feeding,” Beckel said. Beckel grew up on a dairy farm in southern Minnesota. When he became a partner on that farm, he started taking a closer look at the nancials and realized a signicant amount of money was being spent on veterinarian visits and

pharmaceutical supplies for the calves. To improve that part of the bottom line, he began focusing his energy on improving the farm’s colostrum management practices and, in doing so, realized the need for a company focused on neonatal calf care. Thus, Golden Calf Company was born. Now, as a calf consultant for Golden Calf Company, part of Beckel’s role involves farm Andy Beckel visits where he Golden Calf helps owners and Company employees evaluate their equipment and practices. Those visits often result in suggested changes to improve the overall health of their calves, and tube feeding can be one of those changes. “All too often I arrive at maternity wards to watch in dismay how employees are improperly tube feeding colostrum to newborn calves,” Beckel said. Employees often tell Beckel they learned tube feeding methods and protocols from a previous employee, who often times is no longer around. That same information is then shared with the next employee. “Basically, it is like playing telephone, and the message is incorrect,” Beckel said. “So we want to show everyone how to properly tube feed a calf and why it is done this way. Period.” Beckel encourages people with any kind of calf care experience to attend the session. From those who have been doing it for years to those with little to no experience, Beckel believes there is always something to learn. With new types of equipment to improved feeding methods, the world of calf care always has something exciting on the horizon. “I strongly believe that the greatest improvements in neonatal calf care can be achieved by education and improvements in technology, which is why our team is always developing better tools for our amazing customers,” Beckel said.

One of the most important things to any business owner is how to turn an investment into a prot. According to Mitch Hockett, that puzzle can be guided with proper genetics. Hockett works with STgenetics consulting dairy farms on optimizing reproductive and genetic programs to maximize farm prots. He has a background in reproductive physiology and more than 20 years of experience in the eld. Hockett will present “Economic value of sexed semen purity and conception” March 24 at 3:30 p.m. in meeting rooms 1-2 of the Denny Sanford Premier Center Complex at the Central Plains Dairy Expo in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Hockett will cover conception management and value of semen. “Every pregnancy on the farm has value,” Hockett said. “As managers, there is an opportunity to treat semen purchases as investments and work to maximize the return of those investments through the value generated in each pregnancy through replacements or beef creation.” Heifer raising has reached a cost never before seen in the dairy industry, so the economic value of creating the correct number of quality replacements while maintaining a productive herd can be a tough match to strike. “Careful planning of matings to create the correct number of heifers opens up the possibility to optimize genetic progress while also adding on revenue from beef creation,” Hockett said. Effective reproduction and genetic improvement are vital to the sustainability of the dairy industry and especially for a successful future, Hockett said. “In my opinion, sustainability of reproduction and genetics will determine

what dairies thrive into the future versus those that struggle to survive,” Hockett said. Diving deeper into reproduction models, Hockett hopes to evaluate what is good and bad about the current practices. “For some dairies, semen is treated as a cost of getting a cow pregnant,” Hockett said. “Pregnancies are then considered a cost to get the cow back in milk production.” While this model is effective for a dairy’s goals, Hockett urges Mitch Hockett producers to look at ST Genetics the opportunity cost left behind. “While many of these dairies are incredibly efcient at achieving pregnant cows consistently, they are likely missing out on the long-term value that those pregnancies can have on the farm,” Hockett said. Bringing new genetics into a herd can be daunting, but it is also a risk worth taking, Hockett said. The current common reproduction model of concentrated pregnancies has bred a culture of efciency and one that stresses quantity over quality. “Intensity of management and specialized labor has enabled dairies to achieve extremely high production while improving reproductive efciency in very large herd settings,” Hockett said. He also mentioned technologies like embryo transfer, sexed semen and beef genetics. “Those that have taken the next step (in reproduction management) are investing in genetics and technologies that allow them to expand beef revenue that adds to the bottom line of farm prots,” Hockett said. Overall, what is best for the future of the dairy industry may cost more now. Hockett hopes to present cost-effective and economic solutions for the dairy industry of the future, while increasing prots on farms today.

Why is attending the Central Plains Dairy Expo important to you and your dairy? It’s a fun way to get away from the farm. Describe how you spend a typical day at the Central Plains Dairy Expo. Usually, we have all the kids with us who are looking for all the candy, ice cream and grilled cheese sandwiches or sitting in the new tractors. Now, our youngest guides us through the trade show. Granted all he is looking for is tractors to play on and snacks to nd. If we are lucky, we get to talk business with some of the booths. What seminars or booths are you especially interested in seeing this year? I don’t have anything special I want to see. I just like to be able to go. Last year, I was disappointed we didn’t have one. If I have time, I wouldn’t mind going to the ag policy breakout session. What have you learned from a previous CPDE that you have taken back and incorporated into your farm? My wife bought the rst calf jackets and have incorporated more crossbreeding into the herd instead of straight Holsteins. She went with Fleckvieh, which have had great returns on the steers.

What would you say to encourage other farmers to attend the Central Plains Dairy Expo? It’s a date night (at least for the concert). It’s free. Tell us about your farm. Our farm is a diversied family farm that has been around for over 100 years. We run stock cows, dairy cows and grain crops. We grain farm with my dad, brother and uncle. The family has always had some type of cows to milk. When my dad was younger, he would say if she can walk into the barn we can milk her. My wife and I have since taken over the dairy from my dad. He wanted to retire, and my wife loves milk cows. She is slowly updating the cows with newer genetics and has gotten the Fleckviehs. The kids help feed calves while we do the milking in an older 10 stanchion at parlor (ve in and ve out).

Tell us about your farm. We have a 200-cow robotic dairy in northwestern Minnesota that our daughter and her family have joined in at 30%. Yuan’s presentation, “On farm Nutritional Management Practices to Drive Dairy Protability” is part of the Central Plains Dairy Expo during the two-day event March 24-25. He will speak at 11:30 a.m. March 25 in meeting rooms 8-10 of the Denny Sanford Premier Center Complex. He hopes to highlight key management practices dairy producers and nutritionists can implement to help reduce costs, improve milk performance and Kai Yuan increase overall protability. Dairy senior These practices include scientist feeding management, bunk management and shrink management. Yuan travels to farms to evaluate rations and works with nutritionists to make the most effective plan for each specic farm. “My presentation will be mostly photos and real cases I’ve worked on farms to show the audience how I do my job,” Yuan said. Management often times can be more important or at least as important as proper nutrition. “I try to make it all work,” Yuan said. “Because if the right ration is out but cows can’t or won’t eat it, it’s not doing anyone good.” Yuan has studied farms’ protability with QLF for six years through the lens of feed mixing consistency, frequency of push-up on both ve and 10 times a day models and how milk components change over a day. “On large farms, I take samples from the bunk to evaluate delivery time and mixing consistency,” Yuan said. Another topic Yuan has looked into is shrink management. “Typically, 8% shrink is present, so 3 to 4 pounds of milk will potentially be lost,” Yuan said.

If your farm is doing 1% better than the next farm in one thing and you continue to do that day after day, the habits and difference will be huge.” Another portion of his talk will be on economics and facts from the farms he has worked with. “Hopefully, it’s an incentive to farmers that I will have real-farm numbers and costs to share how proper nutrition management can save them money,” Yuan said.
