Ruther purchases family dairy farm By Jennifer Coyne & Mark Klaphake PERHAM, Minn. – When Aaron Ruther was a young boy growing up on his family’s farm, he never imagined he would return to the dairy. However, after eight years off the farm, owning a construction company, the cows became more appealing for Ruther. “You don’t really know what kind of lifestyle farming is until you go off the farm and realize the beneďƒžts of dairying rather than working a 9-5 shift,â€? Ruther said. Six years ago, Ruther returned to his family dairy near Perham, Minn., working for his dad, Mike. Today, Ruther and his wife, Tiffany, and their four children – Madison, Ellyana, Brock and Journey – milk 125 cows after buying out Ruther’s dad in June 2015. “My wife and I had talked about milking cows for a couple years before [we purchased my dad’s herd],â€? Ruther said. “We knew Dad had set a goal for himself for where he wanted to be and when he wanted to sell the cows, and Dad knew I wanted to farm.â€? Ruther’s days begin at 3:45 a.m., when he preps the double-7 parlor for milking. By 8, Ruther is done in the parlor and carries out feeding and other routine chores. “By 11 a.m., I’m done with the regular things and try and get home for a couple of hours to take care of miscellaneous stuff,â€? Ruther said, before he returns for evening milking at 3:30. While the herd continues to grow, Ruther’s help remains the same – himself. However, Ruther’s dad does ďƒželdwork and supplies feed, which allows the young dairyman to allocate more time tending to the livestock. “I’m doing it all by myself right now,â€? said Ruther about taking care of the herd. “I’m here 12 hours every day, just doing chores. We’re really trying to ďƒžgure out how to cut down on our
parlor time, because overall, it’s a long time in the barn.â€? When Ruther is not milking, he can often be found observing his youngstock and catching heats. The 150 heifers are located at another site that Ruther rents, where they are bred. Once conďƒžrmed pregnant, the heifers return to the dairy to calve. “One of my goals is to get everything on A.I.,â€? Ruther said. “Right now, all of the heifers are bred A.I. and most of the cows.â€? The cows, however, are on a strict ovsynch program, which Ruther established soon after he purchased the herd. “We’ve really stepped up our breeding program to get our animals to cycle earlier and increase our conception rate,â€? Ruther said. “The progression from where we were before to where we are now is fun to see ‌ we’re using more proven bulls.â€? To aid in this progress, Ruther has incorporated activity monitors, as well as improved the facilities. The Ruthers increased the size of their heifer pens and added a feed bunk, as well as added 17 stalls to the freestall barn and renovated an old calf pen to accommodate more milking cows. “It’s actually been quite challenging because we’ve increased our cow numbers and our facilities weren’t accommodating them,â€? Ruther said. “Month by month we did a little bit at a time.â€? When Ruther was working for his dad, they were milking fewer cows. However, as a one-man team, Ruther knew he had to grow his herd in order for the business to pencil out, ďƒžnancially. “The fact of the matter is we are trying to keep pace,â€? Ruther said. “We couldn’t cash ďƒ&#x;ow a smaller herd; it didn’t work for me and this facility. We found 125 was the number of cows we needed to maintain the quality of life we desired, and that number could offset the wage of hiring someone. Once some of the debt is reduced and they nd an employee, Ruther hopes his routine can change. “We’re really trying to tough it our a few more years until the heifers are paid off,” Ruther said. “That opens a window to better ourselves and make what we do more manageable.” The Ruthers purchased the milking herd with a loan from the Farm Service Agency, while the heifers were purchased on a contract for deed from Ruther’s dad. With about half of the heifers paid for, Ruther has increased his assets and is now
focusing on improving the quality of his herd. Ruther estimated his herd tank average is 76 pounds per cow, with the average cow 160 days in milk. Additionally, the Ruthers are maintaining a somatic cell count (SCC) of 100,000. “SCC is a really religious number around here,” Ruther said. “My dad has always taken pride in it and now I do, too.” Although dairy farming can be frustrating when trying to reach and uphold certain values on the farm, Ruther likes taking chances and seeing a positive reection in the herd. “I like to try new things for the cows. They’re how I

progress. If the cows do good, I can get the tractor I need, or whatever the goal is,” Ruther said. “What better time to improve the herd than when my dad is willing and able to do the eldwork?” An increase in milk prices may also help Ruther, who has not seen the markets above $16 per hundredweight. In the coming years, Ruther hopes to further update
his facilities by making the stalls larger to accommodate the larger-framed cows. While Ruther’s to-do list continues to grow in his second year of dairying, he knows he has made the right decision for he and his family, as he has transitioned from contractor to cowman. Some of Ruther’s favorite moments at the dairy are doing
chores with his children or watching them play with each other on the farm. “Farming isn’t what it used to be, but I wanted to come back to the farm so that I could be home more often and my family could grow up here,” Ruther said. “They’re too young to appreciate doing chores right now, but someday, I hope they see it was worth it.”

Bongards’ Creameries announces incoming Chief Executive Ofcer Brent Ziegler, chairman of Bongards Creameries, announced that Daryl Larson has been appointed president and chief executive ofcer for the company, effective Jan. 1, 2018. Larson, currently Bongards’ vice president of natural cheese operations, will assume the role on the retirement of Keith Grove, who has served as president and chief executive ofcer since 2005. “We’re condent that Daryl, with his tremendous depth of experience and knowledge, will successfully lead Bongards into the future, building and expanding upon the growth and industry leadership that Keith has achieved during his tenure,” says Ziegler. Larson’s extensive background in the dairy industry prior to Bongards includes general management roles with Land O’Lakes, Leprino Foods, Dairy Farmers of America and Agropur. Over the past ve years, Larson has been instrumental in the design and complete renovation of Bongards’ Perham plant and in dramatically increasing the company’s manufacturing capabilities. Funding available for sustainable agriculture projects The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) is now accepting applications for Agricultural Growth, Research and Innovation (AGRI) Sustainable Agriculture and Demonstration Grants. Approximately $250,000 is available to fund projects that explore new ways of conserving natural resources, enhancing farm protability, increasing energy efciency, and improving life in rural communities. “No one cares more about Minnesota’s rural landscape than farmers and their families,” said Lt. Governor Tina Smith. “The Minnesota Department of Agriculture’s Sustainable Agriculture and Demonstration Grant program is available to help farmers improve the sustainability and protability of their operations. I encourage all farmers interested in making changes to their operations to apply for a grant worth up to $25,000.” Farmer David Abazs hopes his grant funds will help demonstrate a cost-effective way to increase soil health on the Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center School’s organic farm. Abazs is testing a variety of materials, including lime, wood ash, and biochar for their ability to affect soil chemistry and increase pH levels of the acidic soils in Lake County. “These elds have never been farmed before and are providing a great template to help us and other farmers,” said Abazs. “We’re trying to nd soil amendments that will help simultaneously meet pH goals and enhance soil health.” Previous grant rounds have funded projects exploring farm diversication, cover crops and crop rotation, conservation tillage, input reduction strategies, and alternative energies like wind, methane, and biomass. AGRI Sustainable Agriculture and Demonstration grantees must share their ndings. These are published annually in the MDA’s Greenbook, which provides a summary of each project along with results, management tips, and other resources. Applications from farmers receive priority, but the program also funds Minnesota nonprot and educational organizations as long as Minnesota farmers are meaningfully involved in the project. Projects may last two to three years. AGRI Sustainable Agriculture and Demonstration Grant applications are due by 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2017. JUMP RIVER, Wis. – When Nick and Lynn Hicks moved to their farm near Jump River, Wis., about four years ago, they quickly discovered it presented a new set of challenges compared to their previous farm in Arcadia, Wis. “We transitioned to organic before moving up here,” said Nick, who milks about 60 cows with Lynn and their four children, Abbey, Travis, Sophia and Tristan. Nick and Lynn hosted a pasture walk in conjunction with the Taylor County land and conservation ofce on Aug. 24 focusing on boosting energy intakes within a
rotational grazing system. The couple said not only was the terrain different in the Northwoods as opposed to the Mississippi Valley, but so was the climate with wetter soils and harsher, colder winters. “Down there it’s fun when you’re trying to farm sidehills, and here you have mud,” Nick said. “You learn real fast that if cattle don’t have enough energy in their feed during the winter, you’ll start losing them.” To maintain adequate energy intake, the Hickses include grain in all their rations, with top producing cows getting about 11 pounds

of grain per day. “A problem with some grazing farms is not having enough energy in the ration,” said Bob Brandt with the land and conservation ofce, who is a certied organic grazier himself. Nutritionist Rick Knopp, who works with both organic and conventional herds, was also on hand to offer advice to
those in attendance. Calves on the Hicks family dairy get a mix of rolled oats, shelled corn and mineral, along with grass hay beginning at birth, opposed to many conventional herds who only begin feeding hay after weaning. “Organic herds seem to introduce dry hay much sooner,” Knopp said. “A calf is
not a true ruminant until she’s about 6 months old, but you see beef calves eating large amounts of grass and nursing off their mothers by the time they’re a month old.” Knopp also suggested feeding ker to calves. “It is great for gut health, and calves do great on it,” Knopp said. ConƟnued from HICKS | Page 10 gallon of whole milk twice per day from cows with high somatic cell counts, and are bedded with certied organic straw. “We leave calves on milk a little longer in the winter,” Lynn said. “Also, because we don’t use jackets, we bed them as deep as the calf is so they can burrow in it.” The cows, which consist of Jerseys and crossbreds, are rotated between paddocks every 12 hours in peak grazing season, and once per day when pastures are not as lush. The heifers follow the cows from paddock to paddock to clean up what has been left behind. “The farm is 110 acres with only about 70 that’s usable, so we had to rent acres because we’re limited with grazing heifers and organic certiers are very particular,” Nick said. “It pays to be a good neighbor.” Installing a new lane with the help of the land and conservation department has also helped with maintaining energy levels in the cows. According to Nick and Lynn, production jumped instantly when the cows were rst let loose on the new lane, which was constructed with a geotextile base before being topped off with sand and pea gravel. “We put the fence right up to the lane so the cows aren’t walking in the ditches,” Nick said. “It was amazing how much energy they wasted having to wade through the mud going to and from the barn, and the cows are so happy with the new lane.” Many of the native grasses, like tall fescue, have not thinned out. Tall fescue, while being winter hardy, is low in energy, and Knopp suggested interseeding improved varieties, such as soft fescues and meadow fescue, which are more palatable to the cow and contain more energy.
“That’s a catch-22 with high energy plants; they aren’t winter hardy, and winter hardy species typically aren’t high in energy,” Knopp said. Nourishing the soil is also key to pasture quality, and taking a soil sample using wet chemistry was suggested to assess soil needs. The Hickses lime their pastures to boost calcium levels. “The ideal calcium to magnesium ratio is 3.5 to 1, and calcium may be in the soil but not available to the plant. This area of Wisconsin is also phosphorous decient,” Knopp said. “Phosphorous is kind of a dirty word in agriculture because of runoff and algae blooms, but if soils aren’t biologically active, they aren’t releasing nutrients into the plant.” Cover crops, particularly cover crop legumes, are also gaining popularity in rotational grazing systems to not only nourish the soil and provide a source of forage for the cattle, but to also keep the ground cool in summer by leaving residue. However, timing is critical in that the plant needs time to establish its nutrient reserves before winter. “Cover crop legumes need to put up their crown before building root reserves,” Knopp said. “Otherwise, they are more susceptible to winterkill if this is not achieved.” While increasing energy intake in rotationally grazed and strictly grassfed herds may prove to be challenging, it is well worth the time and effort spent from both a farmer’s and organic certier’s standpoint. Brandt said the biggest challenge in organic farming can very well be the paperwork associated with certication. “That high fence, if you can clear it, protects their market, though,” Knopp said.

I also took a winter calf to the state fair and got a blue ribbon. What do you want to be when you grow up? I want to be a dog trainer. If you had a farm, describe what it would look like. It would have a big garden with one dog, three cows, lots of owers and a fairy garden. I would not have any tractors. What’s your favorite dairy treat? Vanilla yogurt. Are you involved in any activities? What’s your favorite? What do you enjoy about it? I am in 4-H, dance, oor hockey and soccer. Soccer is my favorite because it gives me energy, and I like running. What is your favorite game to play/thing to do at home/on the farm? I like to be in the garden. We grow both owers and vegetables. I also help with chores in the house. She is an 8-week-old Louisiana Catahoula Leopard crossed with a Black Mouthed Curr, and she is very cute. We have six dogs with two more that will be coming. Chief, Will and Roxie are our hunting dogs; Lacy is the house dog; and Hazel and Maggie are cow dogs. Bell and Hondo will be arriving soon. They are also cow dogs. What’s your favorite subject in school? I like social studies because I like learning about the past. What was the highlight of the summer? Going to the state fair for 4-H with my fall calf. She placed 13th in her class out of 29 animals and received reserve champion total net merit. I also went to a summer camp called Cast Away. It was a week-long camp for Young Life in Detroit Lakes, Minn. What do you want to be when you grow up? I want to be an interior designer. If you had a farm, describe what it would look like. I would have a horse farm with four horses, a few dairy and beef cows, and 10 dogs. I would also have a few red tractors. What’s your favorite dairy treat? I like vanilla ice cream with chocolate syrup. Are you involved in any activities? What’s your favorite? What do you enjoy about it? I am active in 4-H where I show dairy cows and am in dairy judging. I am also in orchestra, dance and I serve as a dairy ambassador for our county American dairy association. What do you want to be when you grow up? I either want to play for the Minnesota Twins or for the Minnesota Vikings. I play both baseball and football. The Wisconsin Holstein Association is excited to announce that the Erik and Brenda Gilbertson family from Gildale Holsteins will host the annual WHA State Picnic Sept. 17. The event kicks off with the Blue Ribbon MILK 5K / 1-mile walk around the Gildale Farm at 9 a.m. Other planned activities include a judging contest, cow train rides, keynote speaker, live music and program as well as a steak lunch cooked by the Iowa County Cattleman’s Association. Picnic goers will also get to hear from WHA’s own Crystal Siemers-Peterman, who is serving her year as Alice in Dairyland, and keynote speaker Scott Florence. The WHA State Picnic is an annual gathering of around 300 Wisconsin Holstein members from across the state. The 78th Minnesota Nutrition Conference at City Center Hotel, Mankato, Minn., kicks off on Wed., Sept. 20 at 1 p.m. with four internationally known speakers who will address “The Future of Animal Production”. At the International Silo Associations’ (ISA) annual meeting on Nov. 29, 2016 the industry reported on many of the misconceptions held by the general agricultural community. Among ISA’s concerns is the perception that tower silos are slow lling and unloading. This perception was noted in a quote printed in a past dairy modernization guide. It read, “Upright silos… have limited value on large dairies because of the time required to ll and unload them.” According to ISA this is simply not true. Modern silo unloaders with feeding rates exceeding 800 pounds per minute have been reported in major agricultural papers across the country. These speeds are due to advances in unloading using center discharge unloaders. Individual farmers using this technology consistently report feeding times faster than those achieved when using horizontal storage methods. With the advent of “Feed Automation”, the use of a fast unloading tower silo is critical to the process. In response to the slow lling rates, ISA says, the lling rates on tower silos exceed the rates possible using methods that require manual packing. ISA has reports of producers and custom harvesters across the country lling towers at speeds exceeding 100 tons per hour, and several who are lling at speeds over 120 tons per hour. These numbers have also been reported in major agricultural papers throughout the country. According to ISA, it is a common perception that large amounts of feed cannot be stored in a tower silo. However, towers have been built up to 30 feet in diameter and over 130 feet tall. A unit of this size will hold nearly 3000 tons of corn silage or 1050 tons of dry matter. That is enough forage to meet the forage needs of more than 200 milking cows for a year. Another perception that concerns ISA is the predominate school of thought in the area of dry matter losses in forage, also known as feed shrink. There has been a lot of talk about dry matter loss and the great costs associated with it. While most people understand that tower silos are very effective in reducing dry matter losses, the tower silo has not often been seen as a solution to this problem. With the backing of multiple university based studies, ISA reports that when comparing the average dry matter losses in a tower silo with that of a bunker or pile, there is an average dry matter savings of 9 percent. Multiple producers who have moved from horizontal storage to towers have reported to ISA that they have seen acreage savings as high as 23 percent after the rst year of use. ISA also refutes the idea that it is expensive to unload from the tower silos. Citing an implement costs study put out by the University of Minnesota, they claim that there are actually signicant savings in using an unloader to extract feed as opposed to a tractor, skid steer, or front-end loader. You can run a 7.5 horsepower motor on an unloader for one hour for much less than running a tractor for one hour not to mention the time and labor savings. While unloaders may be more expensive today, the price overall is comparable and many times cheaper than the devices used to unload forage in horizontal storage. The herd features hard-to-find home-raised Red & Whites, as well as traditional Black & White Holsteins. The herd average is approximately 18,000 pounds milk, 3.8% fat and 3.2% protein. Several recently fresh or due soon after sale time. SCC averages approximately 225,000. No BST, no TMR. Cows are fed a moderate ration along with pasture, allowing a great deal of potential for increased production. Includes mostly first through third lactation females. All cows in service to a good Red & White herd sire. Cows are on pasture during the summer months and let out daily the rest of the year. The herd is milked in a tie-stall facility with several switch cows making this herd easily adaptable to a free-stall and parlor facility.
