Pfaff transforms barn
Remodeled building ideal for rustic weddings, events By Cassie Olson

ALMA CENTER, Wis. – Kristin Pfaff feels her life mirrors how many other farmers live – she loves her family, her cows and her farm. Every day, she is an active part of the hustle and bustle that makes up the daily life on her family’s
150-cow dairy farm in Alma Center, Wis. However, over the last few months, Pfaff’s plate has been even fuller as she has remodeled an old barn into the rustic event venue, Garden Valley Gatherings. Pfaff’s green thumb cannot be missed. As an active gardener, she has cared for her home’s yard

and owers for years. Three years ago, while mowing the lawn of the weathered barn across the road, Pfaff said she had a vision. “We raised all of our bulls in the basement of the barn at the time and it denitely needed xing,” Pfaff said. “One day, an Amish man stopped and said he wanted bull calves for steers. I told him no, we didn’t have any for sale, but asked him if he knew anyone who might do repairs to the barn.” The neighbor returned the following Saturday with Menno Bontrager, who said he could do the job. Bontrager looked over the barn, determining the barn needed a new roof, oor and lean-to. “I remember approaching my husband and saying, ‘We need to have events here,’” Pfaff said. For the next three years, Pfaff researched event venues and similar barns within the area. The more she researched, the more her vision came to life. This last spring, the barn

began making progress as Pfaff began renovating the barn. The roof was replaced and new wooden, sliding doors were added around the barn. A deck was constructed and patio installed to add outdoor space. The oors were redone inside the barn, and before long, Pfaff’s event barn had become a reality. Something that makes Garden Valley Gatherings unique is its rustic charm. A self-proclaimed thrifter, Pfaff handpicked every piece within the event barn. Many of these items came from unconventional places. “I really like garage sales, buy and sell sites, and Craigslist,” Pfaff said. “For example, someone was selling junky cars on a buy and sell site, so I went out and bought a couple cars. My family thought I had

MORRIS, Minn. – Telephones, televisions and computers used to be technologies people were hesitant to incorporate into their daily lives. With time, however, they became commonplace in the American household. Renewable energy is the new telephone, T.V. and computer. “Tractors and equipment are advancing at a rapid pace – from GMOs to robots to drones,” Mike Reese said. “Our energy systems are heading in that
same direction.” Reese is the renewable energy director at West Central Research and Outreach Center (WCROC) at the University of Minnesota in Morris, Minn. In partnership with the Minnesota Ag/Energy Roundtable, the University hosted the 2016 Farm Energy Forum Sept. 8 to discuss renewable energy options for dairy farms of all sizes. Minnesota is home to 460,000-some dairy cows that consume $46.8 million of electricity each year, according to Reese; 7.8 million pigs make up $23.4 million of electricity use each year for the state. “That value [for cows] far exceeds a population of a Minnesota city,” Reese said. With that, the push for renewable energy sources is ever more important. Of the different sources available for dairy
producers to implement on their farms, solar power was discussed in detail at the energy forum. In 2013, Governor Mark Dayton signed a solar law that by 2020, 1.5 percent of all electricity generated by large utility companies must be solar. “Actually, Minnesota has a good solar resource,” said Lissa Pawlisch, University of Minnesota Extension Clean Energy Research Teams (CERTs). “It starts with efciency. How much would it cost? Who could use it? What equipment is needed? What are your ultimate goals?” Across the state, Pawlisch and CERTs are constructing site assessments on farms to incorporate more renewable energy for Greater Minnesota. Expansions enable the Schultz brothers to carry on farming tradition By Jerry Nelson

FREEMAN, S.D. – Many dairy farmers dream to grow their business to the point where it has room for additional family members. This dream has come true for the Schultz family. Mike and Vicki Schultz and their two sons, John and Jeff, operate Schultz Brothers Dairy, where they milk 1,400 cows near Freeman, S.D. John and his wife, Becca, have two
children, Penelope, 4, and Harrison, 2. Jeff and his wife, Yolanda, have three children, Axle, 7, Olivia, 5, and Ava, 3. Numerous expansions over the years have enabled the Schultzes to continue the family dairy farming legacy. With John and Jeff back on the farm, Schultz Brothers Dairy now has seen three generations in the family take over. Each of the Schultzes has his or her own specialty. The 2016 Eau Claire County 4-H Discovery Day is happening on Sunday, Oct. 9, from 1-3 p.m. at the Eau Claire Sports Warehouse, 2983 11th St., Eau Claire. This event is targeted at youth in Kindergarten through 8th grade. Sessions will explore various interests, including arts/crafts, robotics, STEM, various animal projects, and so much more! Depending on market conditions and other factors, the Schultzes may feed out some of their steers, but most are sold as feeders. “We raise our baby calves on pasteurized milk,” John said. “Our experience is that calves that are given whole milk are healthier and have heavier weaning weights.” All told, the Schultzes own 3,700 head of female dairy cattle. Most of the feed for their herd is provided by the 3,500 acres that the Schultz family farms. The new facilities over the years at Schultz Brothers Dairy have done more than just boost cow numbers. They have also led to more employee satisfaction and increased employee retention. “Every day, I ask our employees if there’s anything they need to do their jobs,” John said. “They take pride in their work and it’s important that I give them all the tools they need. Sometimes it’s the little things that can help make our employees happier. For example, we use a machine to trim the switches off our cows’ tails. This makes things a bit nicer for the milking crew.”
But the farm didn’t always have a big labor force. Mike grew up on a dairy farm that was operated by his parents, Amos and Geraldine. After high school, Mike and his father built a new dairy facility on his parents’ farm. Mike’s plan to dairy with his parents changed once he met Vicki. “When we got married, Vicki said that she wanted to live closer to her parents, so we bought a farm just across the section from them,” Mike said. Vicki’s parents, Sam and Betty Stahl, milked cows on their farm all their lives and didn’t retire from the dairy business until the early 1990s. They also helped the newlyweds Mike and Vicki get a toehold in dairy farming. Along with the animals, Vicki and Mike also raised their three children on the farm – sons, John and Jeff and daughter, Jenny Nelson, who works and lives off the farm with her family. In 1983, Mike and Vicki built a double-6 milking parlor and freestall facility. That’s why we decided to upgrade our facilities.” The year 2001 was a busy one at the Schultz farm. While they were building their new dairy barn, Jeff and John were wrapping up their college educations. Both of the Schultz brothers attended South Dakota State University, where John majored in ag economics and Jeff earned a degree in ag business. John was a member of the SDSU Dairy Club and Jeff was a linebacker on the Jackrabbits football team. “I always wanted to own my own business,” John said. “Being able to work with my family is a bonus.”

Jeff had similar dreams. “Ever since I was a little kid, I knew that dairy farming was what I was going to do,” Jeff said. The Schultz family’s new facility included enough freestalls for their 600 head and a double-12 parallel milking parlor. The stalls have mattresses that are bedded with manure solids. “We designed our facilities so that they could be easily expanded,” John said. And expand they did. In 2006,
the Schultz family added another barn that could hold an additional 600 head. They also increased the size of their parlor to a double-24. Their expansions didn’t end there. In 2008, they built a 300-head barn that houses their dry cows and late lactation animals. In 2014, they built a 220-head special needs facility that features bedding pack calving pens and a milking parlor that can accommodate up to eight cows. The Schultzes agree that working with family on a daily basis can have its challenges. But they all also said there are some tremendous rewards. “If one of us wants to go somewhere for a few days, we know that there is someone who can step in and do our jobs,” Jeff said. “We can get away from the farm for a few days and not worry about whether or not things will be done the right way while we’re gone.” John said everyone has changed over the years. “There were times when we had some disagreements, but we have learned how to work around such things. It’s good to know that there is always someone you can depend on and who cares as much as you do about the operation,” he said. It’s this dedication that makes farming with family so great to the Schultzes. “If one of us fell down a hole, another of us would be there to catch him before he got to the bottom,” Mike said. “It’s especially fun for me now that there are grandkids. There’s nothing better than riding around in the feed truck with one of our grandchildren. Working with family is the best part.”

Five percent was awarded to Lauren, Hendel for exhibiting the reserve champion, and ve percent was put into a youth education fund. The remaining 80 percent was divided equally among all the rest of the 38 blue ribbon exhibitors. This year each youth received $352.74 and a $20 Kwik Trip gift card.

through Oct. 31, 2016. Organic certication is a third-party verication system. It assures consumers the organic products they buy are produced in accordance with federal organic regulations. Organic operations must follow National Organic Standards and are monitored through review of their records and on-site inspections at least once per year. “The yearly cost of certication can range from a few hundred to several thousand dollars,” said program administrator Cassie Dahl. “This program provides some relief and goes a long way to make organic certication more affordable.” Funds for the cost share program come from a cooperative agreement with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). Operations that received certication (or had ongoing certication) between Oct. 1, 2015 and September 30, 2016 are eligible for reimbursement of up to 75 percent of certication-related expenses, with a maximum of $750 per category (crop, livestock, processing/handling, wild harvest). Agricultural safety group to offer student scholarships The International Society for Agricultural Safety and Health (ISASH) is supporting the next generation of safety and health professionals by offering 10 scholarships in the amount of $500 each to attend its June 2017 conference in Logan, Utah. ISASH membership includes students, farmers, engineers, educators, insurers, physicians, nurses, veterinarians, statisticians, communicators, anthropologists and business leaders. “No matter what their eld of study, these students could nd a career in ag safety,” said ISASH President Aaron Yoder, who is with the Central States Center
for Agricultural Safety and Health at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. “ISASH is excited to be able to offer these scholarship opportunities.” U.S. and international college student applicants will need to submit an abstract and have that abstract approved by the ISASH Research and Development Committee to be considered for the scholarships. Consumer Protection, says, “If the heavy rains we’ve had across most of the state all summer continue into the fall, farmers might have trouble nding that window when they can safely spread manure. But it’s important that they keep an eye on conditions. Manure spills and runoff can damage waterways, and cost farmers both in nancial penalties and the loss of nutrients.” The Runoff Risk Advisory Forecast is part of the online Wisconsin Manure Management System (www.manureadvisorysystem.wi.gov). It provides maps that are updated three times a day to show short-term manure runoff risk, taking into consideration soil moisture, weather forecast, crop cover, and slope. Farmers can check it to see how risky it will be to spread manure in their watershed basin. Along with checking the forecast, farmers who have nutrient management plans should be spreading manure based on the plan. Almost a third of Wisconsin’s 9 million acres of cropland is covered by a nutrient management plan. “Your nutrient management plan includes all site-specic risk areas on your farm, so it’s really a great tool to be sure you’re putting the right amount of nutrients in the right place, and the advisory forecast tells you the right time,” Walling says. She advises farmers who don’t have a plan to talk to their crop consultant or county conservationist to develop one, and to help with alternatives to spreading in risky conditions such as stacking manure in a safe spot or identifying elds where the runoff risk is lowest. For information about nutrient management planning, visit DATCP’s website: https://datcp.wi.gov/Pages/Programs_Services/NutrientManagement.aspx USDA to study corn and potato production practices The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) will soon begin conducting the Agricultural Resource Management Survey (ARMS) in order to gather data from corn and potato producers on their production practices. “ARMS serves as the primary source of information on the use of crop protection chemicals, ensuring that the Environmental Protection Agency and other regulators use real-world data when making decisions about the future availability of these products,” said Dan Lofthus, state statistician of the Minnesota NASS Field Ofce. “The survey results help agricultural leaders and decision-makers better understand how producers cope with risk, adapt to policy changes, and make decisions about chemical use, new technologies and many other aspects of farming.” In Minnesota, data will be collected from 300 corn producers and 100 potato producers in October and November. NASS representatives will be conducting inperson interviews with producers to gather data on their chemical use, pest management, and other practices used for corn and potato production. The data collected for ARMS aids farmers in many ways. “Your participation in ARMS ensures that decisions affecting you, your family, your business, and your community are based on the facts, straight from the source”, added Lofthus. Early next year, we will also follow up with some of the participants to obtain additional economic data. As with all NASS surveys, information provided by respondents is condential by federal law. NASS safeguards the privacy of all responses and publishes only aggregate data, ensuring that no individual operation or producer can be identied. The results of the ARMS will be released on NASS’s website at www.nass.usda. gov on May 12, 2017.
