Bushmans take organic path to farm ownership Milk surplus, quota worry young dairyman By Ron Johnson

WAUKON, Iowa – Like many dairymen, Zack Bushman is concerned about the milk price and too much milk. The 21-year-old dairyman and his wife, Rachael, purchased their northeast Iowa organic farm 10 months ago. But, just as in the world of conventional milk, an overabundance is dragging down farmers’ prices. Zack said his milk buyer, the farmer-owned cooperative Organic Valley, is paying a base price of $27 per hundredweight. But, it’s not paying that on all the milk member farms produce. Instead, Zack said, under Organic Valley’s selfimposed quota system, milk above and beyond a farm’s base fetches just $7 per hundredweight. That situation has the young farmer nervous. “Organic Valley is kind of making me feel uneasy,” said Zack. “They’ve signed up a lot of farmers, and now there’s way too much milk out there on the organic side.” Make no mistake about it: Zack and Rachael appreciate the higher base price. In fact, without it they might not have been able to buy their 11 acres and buildings. Rachael said they would not have gotten their Farm Service Agency (FSA) loan if not for the farm and herd being certied as organic, and therefore able to garner a higher milk price. They purchased their place, along with 50 cows and 50 heifers, from John Palmer, an organic dairyman whom Zack worked for. Zack said the farm has been organic since 2005. Zack is no stranger to organic dairying. His father, Chuck Bushman, and Zack’s brother, Fritz, milk 120

They purchased their organic 50-cow farm 10 months ago. cows on an organic farm near Castalia, Iowa. With a farm to pay for, Zack and Rachael decided to go to three-time-a-day milking last November. They received the results they wanted: more than 10 extra pounds of milk per cow, per day. Zack said the cows started out averaging 58 pounds a day and peaked at 74 pounds a day. Besides higher milk production, the Bushmans
saw an improvement in their cows’ reproduction. Zack said they had as high as 90 percent of the cows pregnant, primarily because of increased heat detection. The Bushmans stopped milking three times a day in April, due to eldwork. Turn to BUSHMANS | Page 3

Zack Bushman feeds dry cows on his dairy near Waukon, Iowa. “I’m hoping to [return to threetime-a-day milking],” said Zack. “But with Organic Valley’s quota system, our base isn’t currently high enough to sell that much milk.” For the Bushmans, the quota went into effect this past March. “That rst month,” Zack said, “They deducted $5,500 from our paycheck for oversupply.” Rachael said, “The quota makes sense. Otherwise, people would keep producing too much. It’s hard for us … but it makes sense.” Zack said he wishes he could sell his overquota milk to a buyer and get the conventional price. But the farm’s contract with Organic Valley does not allow that. Overall, things are going well

for the Bushmans. They welcomed daughter Sophia, their rst child, a little more than a month ago. The 59 Holsteins and one Brown Swiss cow have a rolling herd average close to 20,000 pounds per cow. The fat and protein tests are 3.9 and 3.2 percent, respectively. After Palmer moved his operation to a different farm, Zack worked the present place alone for six months. He’d put in 14 hours, drive the 23 miles to his parents’ farm for supper, work a couple of hours, then get home around 11 p.m. Then it was out of bed at 4:30 a.m., for milking, chores and eldwork. Zack bought a tractor, skid loader and feed mixer when he bought his cows. He swaps labor with Brodie, a brother, and their father, and shares equipment. While Zack has a deep farm background, Rachael is a self-described city girl from Minnesota.
Rachael and Zack met at the church where her father is the pastor. Rachael became Mrs. Bushman a little more than a year ago and has adapted well to farm life. “It’s busy,” Rachael said. “But it’s good. It’s nice that he’s around and we can do things together.” Zack said, “Until she had the baby, she milked almost every milking with me.” Rachael still milks most afternoons in the double-10 parabone swing parlor, with Sophia safely snugged into a car seat. Zack said milking the 60 cows, plus cleaning up, takes about an hour. The Bushmans employ two people – Brian Stevens and Caleb Opfer – who take turns helping with morning milking. Part of the National Organic Program (NOP) mandates that dairy cows get at least 30 percent of their dry matter from pasture. Zack uses 70 of his rented 240 acres for pasture. Zack uses block grazing. Using polywire for temporary fencing, he makes a narrow paddock big enough to accommodate all the cows. They have access to about an acre a day, before they go to a new area. When the pasture in the rst paddock has grown back, about 15 to 20 days later, the cows go to that spot again. The farm is a hybrid, because grazing and connement with a freestall barn are combined. There are 134 stalls in three locations, meaning the herd has room to grow. Like all young farmers, Zack and Rachael have hopes and plans. Zack would like to build a registered herd, construct bunker silos and convert a hog building to heifer housing. They would like to buy land, too. For the next year, they plan to hold the farm on a steady course. By next June, they should be milking close to 90, Zack said, because 25 heifers are due to calve this fall, with 11 more due in the spring. A recent milestone was the calving of the rst cow they bred on their own. As he watched Rachael, holding their sleeping baby girl, Zack said, “This has turned out pretty good.”

Pulling for a hobby
Banse nds new past-time with tractor By Krista Kuzma

CALEDONIA, Minn. – Although Lester Banse has loved his career of milking cows, he felt like he needed a hobby to go along with his lifestyle. “I wanted something else to think about besides cows and farming,” Lester said. He decided on tractor
pulling. This year, Lester completed his rst full season as a member of the Tri State Truck and Tractor Pullers club and earned the total points champion title in his class in his rookie season. Lester and his wife, Donna, milk 200 cows on their dairy near Caledonia, Minn. Lester has always liked the sport. “Whenever we would go to watch tractor pulls in the area it was always really exciting,” he said. So about three years ago, he decided to give the hobby a try. Donna was onboard with the new venture, but they also

brought in a former employee and friend, Elliot Breeser, to join them. To start, the Banses searched online and found a pulling tractor in New York. “We got all the way to Cleveland, Ohio, and got a call that said the tractor had broke,” Lester said. Although Breeser had gotten the tractor working, they only took it to a few events. “I learned from that tractor that we should have started from scratch,” Lester said. Only one month later, the Banses decided to invest in having someone make them a new one. It took two years for a local motor sport company to make it. “The inside is totally different [than a regular tractor],” Donna said. Although the tractor’s hood is from a John Deere 7630, that is the only similarity. They built the tractor to participate in the hot farm class, which allows tractors with a 3- by 3-inch turbo and 466 cubic-inch engine. The tires must not be bigger than 20.8 by 38 inches and the tractor cannot weigh over 9,500 pounds. After it was completed, the Banses decided

ConƟnued from BANSE | Page 4 to name the tractor, Papa’s Itch. “Tractor pulling is an itch that needed to be scratched for Lester,” Donna said, referencing the name. By the fall of 2016, the Banses and Breeser were ready to take their tractor out as a part of the Tri State Truck and Tractor Pullers club. But they only were able to get in two pulling events before the season ended. In June, the Banses and Breeser were ready for this year’s season, which included 15 scheduled pulls; however, they were only able to participate in 13 since two were canceled because of rain. “It’s challenging,” Lester said about tractor pulling. “And it’s a little expensive. You need an understanding wife to do this.” Each time they participated at a club-qualifying event, Lester and Breeser could have two tries, which are called hooks in the tractor-pulling world. Lester would drive the rst hook while Breeser drove the second. This year, Lester became the club’s total points champion for hook one in the Hot Farm Class and Breeser earned the same title for hook two. The total points
champion is determined by placings during the club’s scheduled events. The higher the placing at a tractor pulling event, the more points awarded. At most events this season, Lester and Breeser placed within the top three. “It’s been a dream season. I never expected it to be like this,” Lester said. Donna agreed. “Going into it, he just hoped to be middle of the pack because it was his rst season,” she said. Lester said he was happy to have Donna cheering on the sidelines and Breeser with him for each event. “He’s my right hand man,” Lester said. “Without him along, especially in my rookie season, I would have been lost.” Most people who participate in the same events have been involved with the sport for at least 30 years, Lester said. Lester even competed again 16-year-olds. “I’m still learning,” the 64-year-old said. The biggest learning curve is trying to drive a tractor with 1,300 horsepower. Turn to BANSE | Page 6

While the outside of the tractor has a John Deere 7630 hood, the inside is much different. It has a 3- by 3-inch turbo and a 466-cubic inch engine. “It’s hard to keep the clutch down before it’s ready to go. There’s a lot of power to it. There are weights in the clutch so the faster you rev it up, the harder it is to hold it in,” Lester said. Lester thinks Breeser is a better driver. “He’s not scared. He drives it like he stole it. I always think I’m going to hit the grandstand or something,” he said. “The most fun part for me is the last 100 feet, because I think I’ve made it.” Along with the nerves comes the thrill. “It’s exciting when you sit up there, rev up and then let the clutch out,” Lester said. The Banses have also enjoyed the camaraderie that has come with the club. “We’ve met a lot of new people,” Lester said. “Plus, with Elliot along it’s a lot of fun. We spend a lot of time together. There are some pulls where we don’t get home until 2 a.m.” Although their new hobby has taken time away from their dairy, the Banses have a dependable full-time employee, Zach Kasten, who they trust with the
farm while they are away. Most of the pulling events are on Friday and Saturday nights. “But his weekend off is his weekend off. I don’t expect him to work so I can go to a tractor pull. Those weekends are hectic, and Donna and I have to get feeding done before we go,” Lester

said. They also have two high school students who work part-time shifts milking the cows. Now that the season is over, the Banses and Breeser will make sure their tractor is ready to go for next season. Lester is excited to be making up for 40 years with no hobby. “It’s nonsense, but it’s a lot of fun,” he said.

UNDERWOOD, Minn. – A deep-pedigreed Holstein and Red and White herd will be sold at auction Saturday, October 14. Partners Chuck Will and Yasushi Tachibana will sell 85 animals on their farm, Willolea Holsteins, at 19210 Co. Hwy. 39, Underwood, Minn. The decision to sell was not easy, but Will felt it was necessary. “Yasushi has family in Japan that have health issues. Though he would like to keep dairying, he has family that needs attention. I told him that family is more important than cows,” Will said. The men’s partnership began 18 years ago when Tachibana returned to Underwood after having been a trainee on Will’s farm. “Yasushi was here for six months at rst, but I got that extended so he could stay four-and-a-half years,” Will said. “He went back to Japan and dairied with his father. When I travelled to Japan, he said he wanted to come back to be a dairyman. The second time I was there, he said he wanted to be my partner.” Together, Will and Tachibana developed Minnesota’s highest Breed Age Average herd the last

As more farmers turn to piles and bunkers for storing fermented feeds, one of the rst things they may discover is that those methods of feed storage play by a different set of rules compared to upright silos and bags. “The need to harvest more acres in a limited timeframe has been a driving force behind creating feed storage systems which will allow for rapid harvest and storage,” said Kory Duerst, a dairy consultant specializing in bunkers and inoculants. Duerst said bunkers and piles help provide more consistent feed quality compared to other methods of storage, as well. “This type of storage system will also allow a more consistent silage because it will be all blended together as it is being lled and as it is being faced out of the bunker instead of a load to load, as would be the case in bags and upright silos,” Duerst said. “Lastly, as feeding animals and labor efciency become increasingly important on farms, it is signicantly faster

to feed out of bunkers to large numbers of animals in freestall barns.” However, while it is faster to unload forages into a bunker or pile, packing and covering are critical due to oxygen being an inhibiting factor in the fermentation process. “One of the most important critical control points to forage quality and preservation is silage density or packing. The reason for this is simple: oxygen is the enemy,” Duerst said. “The more oxygen present means it takes longer to initially ferment the feed, which can cause mold and yeast growth when the bunker is opened back up for feeding due to high porosity and oxygen penetration into the bunker face.” Oxygen penetration encourages mold and yeast growth, which will cause feed degradation, lower palatability and re-
duced nutritional quality overall. The rule of thumb for packing is to have 800 pounds of packing weight for every ton of feed delivered to the bunker per hour, Duerst said. “A practical example of this is 175 tons of feed delivered to the bunker in an hour needs 140,000 pounds of tractor packing weight spreading thin layers of feed. Time isn’t necessarily of importance [as long as] it’s in order: proper moisture, layer thickness and packing weight. A good goal is to have a dry matter density of over 18 pounds, as fed density over 50 pounds, and porosity under 0.25 percent,” Duerst said. After the silage is packed, it must be covered and weighed down to prevent additional oxygen inltration into the feed. “Covering the pile is the single most important thing you can do to maintain forage quality, and nothing will pay a higher return on investment. The best way to maintain a quality top layer of feed is to spray a preservative like propionic or benzoic acid, use a quality oxygen barrier and a quality black/white plastic. Cover the pile immediately,” Duerst said. One of the easiest ways to minimize oxygen exposure is also to create a smooth face at the front of the pile. “Simply put, smooth faces minimize the amount of feed exposed to oxygen and radically lowers oxygen penetration. Again, oxygen is the enemy,” Duerst said. Of course, rules can be followed when packing and covering feed, but none will matter if the forage was taken at the incorrect moisture level, particularly if it is too wet for haylage. “If the crop is too wet, you need to stop. In haylage, you will create opportunity for butyric acid if harvested over 65 percent moisture. Butyric acid is foul, unpalatable and very bad for cows,” Duerst said. Another concern with taking forage off too wet is the possibility of leachate, all of which can be avoided by taking crops off at the proper moisture levels. All in all, timing is everything when harvesting and storing feed, no matter the method. “In corn silage, you will have excess leachate. Putting it up at the correct moisture is the only way to do it. Proper moistures for haylage is 58-62 percent and 6468 percent for corn silage,” Duerst said. “If [the forages are] too dry, you will need to shorten length of cut to increase ability to properly pack. If the corn silage is too dry, most likely you will have poorer ber digestibility and lower feed value causing an increase of purchased feed costs.”

Automatic feeders cut calf-raising time, labor By Ron Johnson

DECORAH, Iowa – Looking to cut the time and labor needed to raise calves, more dairy producers are turning to automatic calf feeders. According to Iowa State University extension educator Jennifer Bentley, automatic feeders emphasize using labor to monitor calves and manage their health and performance. And, the feeders give farmers exible schedules. Other benets can be associated with automatic feeders. “Increasing the feeding rate and the number of portions fed per day may improve weight gain, increase starter intake, improve feed efciency and increase the survival (rates) of calves through their rst lactations,” Bentley said. “Feeding calves in groups also allows calves to express some natural behaviors that can’t be expressed when they’re housed individually.” An automatic calf feeder is a self-contained unit that heats water, dispenses a programmed amount of milk replacer and mixes the replacer in water in a container. Calves can suck the mixture at feeding stations that have one or more rubber nipples. “One mixing station will handle up to three or four nipple feeders,” Bentley said. “Each nipple feeder will feed approximately 20 to 30 calves, depending on the age of the group. suggest that less than 20 calves per nipple feeder is ideal.” Automatic calf feeders do more than merely feed calves. Their computer software can keep track of the amount of milk replacer each calf drinks. It can also record the number of times each calf visits a nipple feeder, along with the times a calf is not allowed to drink and calves’ consumption rates. Those numbers can be valuable to the farm’s calf manager, according to
Bentley. “Any changes in individual calf feeding behavior are alerted to the manager to diagnose illness or failure to adapt to the system,” Bentley said. Automatic calf feeders are not without labor. Bentley said, “Cleaning the equipment and its components is one of the most important keys to making an automatic feeder work.” She recommends monitoring and cleaning the powder and additive
outlets, calibrating the powder and additive delivery, and making sure the water supply is adequate. Also, remember to inspect the delivery hose and nipples. cleaning recommendations include a combination of three times a day for the mixer and heat exchanger before major feeding times,” Bentley said. “And a circuit cleaning needs to be done every day after major feeding times. Circuit cleaning involves hand cleaning the nipple and machine cleaning the lines and internal workings of the feeder. The mixer and heat exchanger cleaning is automated and involves cleaning the element used for heating milk along with the mixer.” Keeping an eye on calf health is still important when an automatic feeder is used. When calves are kept in groups, contagious diseases can affect more animals. Bentley said it’s a good idea to monitor calves and do follow-up checks on them every day. “When checking on calves, see how fast they are drinking. Slower drinking might indicate that a calf is ill or is becoming ill,” Bentley said. Pay attention to the number of times each calf is going to the nipple feeder, too. “Not enough visits might indicate that a calf is ill or is becoming ill. Too many visits might mean that the milk allocation needs to be changed,” Bentley said.

When it’s time to wean calves off the automatic feeder, be sure to reduce the number of things that could induce stress. Don’t dehorn or vaccinate calves near weaning time, Bentley said. And, don’t make changes to groups of calves. Looking at facilities for calves that use automatic feeders, Bentley suggested allowing each calf at least 40 to 45 square feet. “Inadequate space per calf is associated with more health issues,” Bentley said. Make sure the air in group calf pens is of good quality. That might mean installing adjustable curtains on one or more walls and using fans or positive-pressure tubes. “Group housing allows for early socialization; important as a calf matures into a cow,” Bentley said. “However, some negative behavior can occur such as cross-suckling, competition around the feeder and dominance behavior.” Automatic feeders do not eliminate the need to feed by hand. Calves still need to stay in individual pens for three to 10 days and be bottle fed. “Calves will need to be trained to use the feeders,” Bentley said. “This includes gently leading them to the nipple when they are moved into group housing. This usually takes a few feedings.” Finally, make sure calves are grouped by age and size. Don’t, Bentley said, put calves that have more than a two-week age difference together.

Reber’s dairy internship takes her to Florida By Krista Kuzma

MANTORVILLE, Minn. – Growing up on a dairy, along with working on a neighboring one, gave 23-year-old Taylor Reber a good sense of farming in the Upper Midwest. So when the second-year Northeast Iowa Community College student majoring in dairy science technology had an opportunity to do an internship, she decided to travel to another region to experience the dairy lifestyle. This past summer, Reber worked as an intern at Dakin Dairy, a 2,200-cow dairy near Myakka City, Fla. Being at a dairy in west central Florida was a big change from home – a 400-cow dairy owned and operated by her family near Mantorville, Minn. “It was such a good experience,” said Reber, the daughter of Jason and Cami Reber. “I like to travel, so I thought I would nd something out of state, get away from everything here for awhile.” Both her former employer and her college advisor suggested an internship on Dakin Dairy, which has an on-farm milk processing and cheese packaging plant. “I was so in awe over the whole thing,” Reber said. During her 2.5-month experience at the dairy, Reber was able to work in all areas – from the calves to the cows and on the processing side. “The owner asked me what I wanted to learn. I said, ‘Everything I can,’” Reber said. During a typical day, Reber worked the 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. shift, starting the day with bringing in fresh and treated cows. She and another intern would check the cows, sort them if needed and move the fresh cows to another pen if it was time. “I worked on my IVing skills for sick cows,” Reber said.
One time each week, Reber went to the pasture to sort cows that would be calving soon. Each cow had an RFID tag. “We took this magnetic wand and scanned each cow as she came in. All her info would come up on our iPad. We could see how many days it was until she calved, and then we could easily sort her as she walked by,” she said. Reber was also able to see the management of a double-35 parallel parlor. “It was huge,” she said. On the calf side, Reber spent time taking care of the maternity pens and the calves born each day. Although a grower in northern Florida raises the calves, Dakin Dairy still needs to care for the newborns until they are picked up, which happens twice a week. During one of her shifts, Reber said 14 calves were born. “And that was during the slow months for calving because it was summer,” Reber said. During peak calving season, Dakin Dairy usually has about 30 calves per day, Reber said. For two days of her internship, Reber experienced making cheese into cheese curds or blocks. “I had never made cheese before so that was cool. I also got to taste test. That was a plus,” she said. “Everyone on the dairy has to work together because they’re all working to make an end product.” Although she did not get to go into the milk processing plant because of regulations, Reber was able to learn about the process of bottling milk. The ration the cows ate was different than what Reber knew in the Midwest. “They green chop fresh grass everyday. There is one guy out there 12 hours a day just chopping grass. That’s what the cows eat every single day – fresh grass,” Reber said. Although the dairy has 200 acres of corn for silage, it is only used in situations where it has rained too much, Reber said. “The milk there tastes so good. I denitely think the fresh feed has something to do with the taste of the milk,” she said. Turn to REBER | Page 14

ConƟnued from REBER | Page 13 Another difference from Minnesota was the weather. “It was denitely hot. It was well into the 100s every day,” Reber said. “It didn’t bother me. I love the heat and enjoy hot weather.” Because of the warm climate, the housing for the animals is not enclosed – even the parlor. “The sides are just open – no curtains, no windows, just completely open,” Reber said. Using her previous knowledge and what she learned while being on the Florida dairy, Reber gave farm tours, which happen on the dairy from May through October. “I got to talk to hundreds of people and tell them what’s going on, what the employees were doing and why they were doing it. It was amazing. I didn’t know so many people didn’t know about farming and the whole process of milking a cow. It was older people asking questions,” Reber said. Although she spent a large amount of time working on the dairy, Reber was able to nd time to explore the area and portions of Florida, including driving down to Key West before leaving. “What made my whole internship worth it were the people,” Reber said.

What dairy or ag-related extracurricular activities are you involved in? I am involved in FFA and 4-H.
aunt suggested genetic counseling to me, and I thought it was cool. I liked studying genetics in biology class.
Why are you involved in these activities/organizations, and what is your favorite? I am on the FFA nursery and landscape judging team. In our last contest we received a gold ranking. In 4-H, I am in the dairy project along with several non-livestock projects. Baskets is my favorite project. Of the two organizations, FFA is my favorite.
What is something you’ve learned from being involved in these activities/organizations? FFA has made me a better leader and has allowed me to venture out of my comfort zone. Plus, there are workshops to learn information. It has also taught me to get along with people and gives agriculture a positive image.
Tell us your best experience during your time in these activities/organizations. Last year, I attended the state FFA convention. It was fun to hang out with friends from school who aren’t in the same grade. It gave us a chance to hang out and spend time together.
Who do you look up to? My agriculture teacher, Stephanie Porter. She has difďƒžcult students, but always stays positive. She also seeks out people who might be interested in joining FFA.
What’s your favorite social media? Instagram. Along with my personal account, I created a dedicated account for dairy called @mndairy. It has 4,500 followers. People send me pictures of their cows from all over the country, and I post them on the account. I have gotten international pictures, too. I never thought the account would do this well. I have been in charge of it for almost three years. It has been my pride and joy. What are your career aspirations? I am thinking about genetic counseling for people. People would come to me for advice to ask about genetic disorder risks for potential children or pregnancies. I am also thinking about business. I have not made my decision yet. My

Tell us something about yourself that many people don’t know. I have relatives who dairy farm in Switzerland. My grandpa immigrated here. This summer, my brother and I went on a trip to Switzerland. We stayed with my mom’s cousin and saw a lot of relatives. Dairy farming is so different there. All my cows have middle names. Tell us some of your duties on the farm. I feed calves and milk cows. I do chores some mornings and in the evenings every day after school. I also do chores on the weekends. If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be and how would you change it? I would change how people perceive our differences. If that would happen, people would be more understanding.

Small herd, big genetics
Grabers continue tradition of breeding top-notch Jerseys, dabble in collecting antique farm equipment By Jerry Nelson

PARKER, S.D. – Tradition is important to many farmers. This is apparent at Graber Jerseys Inc., a registered Jersey dairy farm operated by brothers, Calvin and Jay Graber. Their dairy that started 86 years ago is still going strong for the Grabers, whose 30-cow herd is focused on type and longevity on their dairy near Parker, S.D. Another way they hold on to tradition is Jay’s collection of antique tractors and farm equipment and Calvin’s involvement in leadership opportunities.
The farm started when the brothers’ grandfather, Peter H. Graber, purchased the home farm in 1927. In 1931, he built a new barn, completed two weeks before their dad, Jerry, was born. They still use this barn today. “We have done only a few modications to the barn,” Jay said. “We took out the horse stalls and calf pens, and made it so that there are now 15 stanchions on each side.” A Jersey herd from the start The Graber operation has been 100 percent Jerseys since the very beginning.

“In 1933, Grandpa Peter bought some foundation registered Jersey females from the Tuthill family in Sioux Falls,” Calvin said. “At the time, the Tuthills were supplying milk to the city of Sioux Falls.” Jerry Graber and his wife, Rachel, took over the dairy from Peter in 1955. Jerry continued his family’s tradition of constantly improving their herd’s Jersey genetics. “During the ‘40s and ‘50s, Dad and a neighbor purchased six bulls from HighLawn Farm in Massachusetts, which is widely known for their superior Jersey
genetics,” Calvin said. “Dad also began to use articial insemination in the 1950s. Our herd has been on ofcial DHIA test since shortly after World War II.” Calvin joined the family operation after attending South Dakota State University where he majored in dairy production. Jay joined the operation immediately after graduating from high school. Even though their herd is small, the Grabers continually strive to make the genetic output of their Jerseys mighty. “Over the years, we have sent about 25 bulls into the stud lines,” Calvin said. “During the past 40 years, we have sold Turn to GRABER | Page 19

This technology addresses this unmet need for increased milk production.

Jay began collecƟng 40 years ago and now owns more than 100 tractors. 300 to 400 bulls to dairy farmers. We have sold breeding stock to 25 states and the countries of Australia, New Zealand and Ecuador.” Longevity and superior type are keys to why the Grabers’ feel they have had genetic success. “We currently have six cows in our herd that are over 9 years old and are all scored Excellent 91 to Excellent 94,” Calvin said. The Grabers use the latest technology in their continuing quest to improve their herd’s genetics. “We do genomic testing on our entire herd,” Calvin said. “We use only high JPI bulls and select for the A2/A2 beta casein and BB beta casein traits. We have also been incorporating more and more polled genetics. About 20 percent of our herd is now polled.” One cow that stands out for the Grabers is Graber Magic Ila. “In 1988, Ila built our Harvestore grain unit when two of her sons entered the A.I. stud service and two of her ET daughters sold in the National Heifer Sale and the All-American Sale,” Calvin said. The Graber operation has steadily expanded its land base over the years. “Dad started out with 160 acres in 1955,” Calvin said. “We have made a habit of purchasing land at a reasonable price whenever possible. Even though we now farm 2,600 acres of prime Turner County land, our Jerseys continue to be the cornerstone of our operation.” Due to health issues, Jerry recently moved into an assisted living facility. Rachel continues to live on the original Graber homestead with Jay. Calvin and his wife, Linda, have been married 37 years and had four children: Tracy, Kayla, Katelyn and Ryan. All the children were active on the farm and in the dairy project in 4-H. On Feb. 12, 2009, at age 23, Ryan tragically died in a farm accident. He was an Ag Business/Ag Econ double major at South Dakota State University and had recently joined the family farming operation. Pursuing other passions Over the past several decades, Jay has become an avid collector of International Harvester tractors and farm equipment. “When I was a kid, our mom’s dad, John Thiesxen, had a museum in Henderson, Neb.,” Jay said. “Grandpa John’s museum made a big impression on me. And our great-uncle Eldon Graber had an International Harvester dealership in Freeman, S.D., so I was naturally drawn to the red tractors. Grandpa Peter had his farm sale in 1973. I wanted to buy his Farmall Super C, but couldn’t afford it. I cried when I watched it go down the road for just $400.”
A few years later, Jay purchased his rst vintage tractor from a neighbor, a 1929 McCormick-Deering 10-20. Jay had been bitten by the collection bug. “Some might call it hoarding, but I call it accumulitis,” Jay said. Jay began to buy Farmall Regulars, F-12s and F-20s. It was not long before he began to purchase other Farmall tractors such as Ms and Hs and their successors. “What I like is early production models that have low serial numbers,” Jay said. “I don’t restore my tractors, although I will buy tractors that have been restored by their previous owner. If I purchase a tractor that has incorrect features – for instance, the wrong tires or wrong hydraulic pump – I will nd the correct equipment and install it on the tractor.” Some years ago, Jay began to add muscle tractors to his collection, including such iconic models as the Farmall 1206 and the Farmall 1468. “Things changed in 1985 when IH was absorbed by Case,” Jay said. “Suddenly everything made by International Harvester became collectable.” Jay began to acquire more esoteric tractors, including a reversed Hi-Clear Farmall 400 that has been mated to a single-row cotton picker. He also obtained more recent hand-built prototypes, some of which are exceedingly rare. “My rarest tractor is an IH 7788 prototype. It’s one of only three made,” said Jay, who has more than 100 tractors in his collection and an encyclopedic knowledge regarding everything IH. Calvin has lled available time with leadership roles. He has been an ofce holder with AMPI since 1978 and a member of the AMPI corporate board since 1998. He sat on the board of directors of the American Jersey Cattle Association from 1995 through 2002. In 2005, Calvin was asked to serve on the board of National All-Jersey Inc. “Serving on the boards has enabled my family and me to meet some of the world’s nest people,” Calvin said. “Attending annual conventions has given us the opportunity to see the country and visit some great herds. And serving on the AMPI corporate board has helped hone my business skills. AMPI deals with some very big numbers.” When it comes to success on their dairy, the Grabers said there is no secret formula. “Our cows are all homebred,” Calvin said. “And we feed them with our homegrown forages.” Even as the barn that Peter Graber constructed continues to serve his descendants, the Grabers are passing on their tradition of breeding top-notch Registered Jerseys – a tradition that has been nurtured for six generations of the Graber family.
To initiate a biomarker test(s), a blood sample is collected by the milk producer and mailed to Biogenetics for analysis. The address for the dairy is 27729 Emery Ave Randolph, Minn. 6 quick tips to reduce forage shrink By Emily Wilmes, University of Minnesota Extension A good forage supply is critical to many livestock operations. No doubt farmers look for any means possible to maximize their forage inventory. Here’s a simple question: How much of your forage are you losing to shrink? Now, minimizing shrink is an issue that should be on top of the priority list as it impacts several aspects of a successful farming operation. Priorities may be constantly changing on your farm, but it’s time to think about what we can be doing to ensure we’re losing as little forage as possible to shrink. It’s important to keep in mind that shrink occurs in multiple ways. Stored forage can be subject to dry matter and forage quality losses. Losses of dry hay stored inside a barn are usually not a concern, however, even for barn stored hay; losses tend to increase when hay moisture is above 20%. Each mechanism in forage- preservation process will probably cause loss of a forage dry matter. Some losses are either mechanical or biological. For hay-making, most of the losses come from mechanical or weather damage, whereas, for silage- making, most losses will occur at storage and feed out stages. In general, round bales are usually subject to greater losses than small rectangular bales, because they tend to remain outside with no protection between baling and feeding. As a part of good silage management, we should take in consideration the following steps to help reduce shrink: 1. Harvest at correct maturity and moisture concentration. 2. Fill the bunker as rapidly as possible. 3. Pack well and seal the bunker to reduce oxygen inltration for at least 14 days to allow the fermentation process. 4. Feed appropriate rate to reduce face exposure to oxygen. 5. Unload an average of 2-6 inches/day to keep the surface smooth. This will limit aerobic deterioration and will help to reduce any possible spoilage. 6. Discard deteriorated silage, which will help prevent livestock health problems. Reducing shrink is a crucial management project on any farm at any time, so make sure that it is a priority on your farm today and every day. This dairyspecic nancial program was developed to provide and assure access to best-in-class education for dairy farmers and other food system professionals, to make sound short- and long-term business decisions in today’s economic environment. In a continually changing business environment, and with attendees having varying levels of nancial understanding, base-knowledge and experiences, it is critical to the success of the professional to be placed into one of three levels of curriculum – foundational, intermediate and advanced. “PDPW’s Financial Literacy for Dairy is excellent because it will meet us where we’re at,” said Marty Hallock, dairy farmer and owner of Mar-Bec Dairy, in Mondovi, Wis. “Being placed in a class with like-minded peers will allow us to put our newly learned nancial skills straight to work and give us the condence and knowledge to make tough business decisions.” To showcase level one and two of the PDPW Financial Literacy for Dairy curriculum, the inaugural class is set for Oct. 23-24 and Dec. 19-20, 2017, and continues Jan. 23-24 and concludes Apr. 9-10, 2018. The training will run 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. on day one and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on day-two of each session, held at the Sheraton Hotel in Madison, Wis.

However, these tragic accidents can be prevented with strict adherence to good silage management and silage safety resources. “It is unfortunate that many people are not aware there is a danger but, in reality, there is,â€? says Dr. Charley. “Given the right resources and awareness of the issues, potential risks and fatalities can be understood and avoided.â€? One area of silage safety issues that is often overlooked is face management. Improper face management is one of the biggest contributors to silage avalanches or cave-offs. Proper management of the face on a daily basis is crucial to safety. Plus, these practices beneďƒžt the quality and consistency of the feed, so there is no reason not to adopt them. With the right tools and resources, injury and death can be prevented by: • Practicing caution around silage. This includes keeping a safe distance from the face and inspecting surroundings cautiously. • Executing proper feedout. Never dig the bucket into the bottom of the pile: this can create an overhang that could lead to a potential silage avalanche. Additionally, never drive the unloader parallel to, and in close proximity of, the feedout face in an over-ďƒžlled bunker or pile. • Use caution when removing plastic, tires, tire sidewalls or gravel bags. When working in, around or on a pile, always wear a harness connected to a safety line and bring a buddy to watch out for you. “At Lallemand Animal Nutrition, safety is a priority, especially when working around silage,â€? Dr. Charley says. “People are the greatest resource in any operation, and ensuring the safety of farm employees and visitors is the highest priority. Note: This is a very nice herd of young, well uddered Holstein and Red & White Holstein cattle. The current herd average according to records of milk sold is 19,500 pounds milk, 3.8% 741 fat and 3.2% 624 protein. SCC averages 250,000. The Lentners use no TMR or BST. Cows are milked in a tie-stall facility and let out to pasture lots every day. Several cows are switched daily, making this herd an easy transition to any type facility.
