WINONA, Minn. – When the Aldingers look back on 100 years, they are also excited to look to the next generation because their daughter has returned to the farm. “I missed the cows and
being around the family [while at college],” said Adriana Aldinger, who attended South Dakota State University for one semester before transferring to Northeast Iowa Community College to nish her degree closer to home. “I was always an outdoorsy person and enjoyed taking care of animals.” Adriana’s father, Roger, agreed. “I’m really pleased and its nice to have another family member come back,” he

Currently, Roger and Adriana milk cows that are all descendants from the original herd. “It’s really cool that nobody bought a cow over those years,” Teresa said. Roger grew up on the farm enjoying the work and eventually took over the farm. “I really like the outdoors, being my own boss and spending time with family,” Roger said. “I grew up working side by side with my dad and now am doing so with my wife and daughter. We’ve got along really well over the years.” One of the best changes the Aldingers have made on their farm has been

milking in a parlor they started using in 2001 and TMR feeding. “They were both major changes, but were positive things to do,” Roger said. “They gave us positive results.” The Aldingers felt honored when they were named a century farm this summer. “The farming industry has changed so much over the years and it’s a big deal to have the farm in the family today,” Roger said. The Aldingers are involved in the Dairy Herd Improvement Association board, volunteer at the malt stand, have hosted Winona County Family Night on the Farm, and have had agriculture classes visit the farm. They are huge supporters of FFA, as Roger is the president of the local alumni association and the girls were both FFA members. “We really support agriculture in our community,” Teresa said. This support showed through when the Aldingers hosted the Winona County Family night on the farm. They originally hosted the event in 1987 with 350 people in attendance, but when they hosted for the second time this past June, 2,000 people attended. “It’s a really good event to bring city and rural people together to see what farm life is like,” Roger said.
Teresa agreed. “They get to see the milking process and experience modern agriculture and get the full picture,” she said. On the farm, they had kids games, including a bounce house, petting zoo, train rides and a scavenger hunt. The evening also included many agriculture booths, cheese curds, ice cream, a Ford dealer, machinery, horse and wagon rides, tractor rides, the opportunity to milk a cow and live music, as well as signs with facts about agriculture. “It went really well, and we were pleased to be asked to host,” Roger said. The Aldingers are thankful for the memories of farming. “Some of the best memories spent on the farm are when things go wrong, and you pass the time by kidding around and joking about it,” Roger said. “These memories are how we get our nicknames and stories to tell.” Teresa also shared favorite memories. “There was the time Roger’s grandfather found a balloon with a certicate in the eld and was able to redeem it for money,” she said. “Or the time when the cows got out, and we had to chase them before they got onto I-90.” Dairy farming has not always been fun in the Aldingers’ rich history in agriculture. The family has been challenged the last few years with the low prices. “It’s a difcult decision and sad to see others go out of the business,” Roger said. “We hope to continue for a while and milk cows for a number of years.” The Aldingers are planning on transitioning the farm to Adriana and are looking forward to seeing what the future has in store for them while holding onto the rewards of farming. “In the spring, you plant and watch the crops grow,” Roger said. “Then in the fall, you harvest and see everything you’ve produced.” Adriana agreed. “I really like seeing the baby calves take their rst breath,” she said. “It’s really cool to be outside with family and be your own boss.” The Aldingers are thankful for the opportunity to be a century farm and are looking forward to another 100 years in the industry.

MORRISTOWN, Minn. – A small goat farm was never meant to become a business, but through a 4-H project, Brenda Manderfeld and Beth Ann Hanson have created a niche market with their goats. “While teaching at a middle school, another teacher found out we had dairy
goats. She told me if I made goat milk soap, she’d be our rst customer,” said Manderfeld, who started the business. “So, I asked my son, Brandon [Hanson], if he’d do it as a 4-H project with me.” Today, Manderfeld and her daughter, Beth Ann Hanson, operate Whispering Creek Farm Girls at their goat farm between Faribault and Morristown, Minn. The women maintain 25 meat and dairy goats in an insulated hog barn. Their strongest sale months are October through December. The soaps are made from all natural ingredients raised on their farm – from the goat milk to the herbs, lavender, rosemary and rose petals. “We have about four lavender plants, since it outsells the rosemary, and we take the petals from my grandmother’s rose bushes,” Manderfeld said. Manderfeld and Hanson are always looking to dream up something new and consider the current trends. In 2015, customers asked if they could make goat milk lotion and body cream. They worked with a local chemist and had the products on the market in 2016. “Body creams and lotions are good for moisturizing dry
“We created brochures that list every ingredient with its benets and purpose for it,” Manderfeld said. “We also included testimonials showing we value our customers’ statements of how this soap helps their eczema, psoriasis and sensitive skin.” Currently the women have 40 varieties of soaps available, as well as lotions and body creams. They recently added scrubs and shaved or milled soap. “Customers help give us ideas,” Manderfeld said. “Like shaved or milled soap for sachet bags. We will be able to do so on the spot at shows and the customers will be able to give a more personalized gift. Soaps make great pamper gifts.” In the future, they hope to sell their products online. “We’ve been asked by several customers to do so,” Manderfeld said. “We are go-

Beth Ann was named a state nalist and runner up at nationals for FFA ag processing prociency competition in 2018 and state nalist for the FFA ag sales procien-

not have enough milk to feed triplet or quadruplet kids. “Milk replacer was a really expensive option,” Manderfeld said. To solve their feed dilemma, they bought a couple dairy goats. As the children got older, they both competed in 4-H and FFA events. “The children and I were really involved in the 4-H goat project development committee,” Manderfeld said. When Manderfeld’s son started showing in Steele County, the fair had 20 goats in attendance, leading him to work on educating other 4-Hers and the public about goats. Now, the fair has increased to about 150 goats shown. “Goat projects are very popular now,” Manderfeld said. The goats have been a great family venture. “I really enjoyed the lasting experiences with my children and being able to learn and grow with them,” Manderfeld said. “I feel that it teaches them a sense of responsibility and teamwork.” Hanson and Manderfeld are thankful for where this project has taken them and are excited for what the future has in store. “It was a project between my children and I,” Manderfeld said. “I’m really excited to share our story with the public and continue helping people with a variety of skin conditions.”
