Longevity carries on in Abril’s family 19-year-old Jersey is longest living cow at Golden Dreams Jerseys By Krista Kuzma

DECORAH, Iowa – Most people remember where they were the morning of Sept. 11, 2001. While the world grappled with the day’s events, dairy farmers continued to care for their animals, including the Cline family whose herd included a week-old heifer calf, Golden Dream Online Abril. Now 19 years later, Abril is still being cared for on the Clines’ 100-cow dairy, Golden Dreams Jerseys, near Decorah. “The oldest cow on the farm before her was 14.5 years old, so we thought we were doing pretty good when Abril reached that point,” Nathan Cline said. “Now that point came and went 4.5 years ago.” Cline is a second-generation farmer on the current farm site and a fourthgeneration Jersey breeder who joined the dairy at the end of 2002 when Abril was a yearling. He has now transitioned to being in charge of the farm’s dayto-day operations with occasional help from his parents, Dennis and Cheryl. To the Clines, it is no surprise Abril has outlived many cows on their dairy. “Her family has always been longlived and relatively problem-free,” Cline said. Dennis bought the original member of the family as a bred heifer in 1975 when he started dairying. Abril is about

Abril is scored EX-94, the highest score a cow has been given to a cow at Golden Dreams Jerseys. The 19-year-old also has a lifeƟme producƟon over 220,000 pounds of milk, 11,000 pounds of buƩerfat and 9,000 pounds of protein. great grandson who ranks as one of the better health trait polled bulls and was sold to a dairy genetics company to be marketed in their lineup. Other daughters and granddaughters have lived to be 9 and 10 years old. “The longevity is denitely transmitted in the family,” Cline said. Abril has been one of Cline’s favorites from the beginning. “I always thought she was a pretty nice cow,” he said. “My dad’s favorite was her sister, Arla, who was one year older and one of my younger brother’s 4-H projects. We showed that cow all over until she was 9 years old.” As a cow that usually calved in the fall, Abril was usually late in lactation or dry during many of the prime show events. Despite her absence from the show ring, Abril has proven she has excellent type. “She’s always been a well put together cow, but she wasn’t quite as show fancy as her sister,” Cline said. “As she matured, she wound up passing her sister in nal score.” Being scored EX-94, Abril is two points higher than her showing counterpart and is the highest scored cow the Clines have ever owned. Not only is she excellent in type, Abril has also proven herself in production. Cline said she is ranked in the top living lifetime cow list for the American Jersey Cattle Association, being as high as No. 8 in butterfat and No. 11 in protein. She has a lifetime production of over 220,000 pounds of milk with over 11,000 pounds of butterfat and 9,000 pounds of protein. She has been in her current lactation for two years. “She still goes through the parlor every day and gets milked,” Cline said. “She’s not milking a lot anymore, but she likes to go through the routine.” After 15 lactations, Cline said Abril is done having calves. “I tried to breed her not too long ago, but she didn’t take to it,” he said. “I doubt I will breed her again.” Until 1.5 years ago, Abril stayed in the sand-bedded free stalls with the rest of the herd; however, after an incident getting caught in the free stall dividers, Cline moved her to the bedded pack used for the maternity area. This suits her well as she likes to claim newborn calves. While the rest of the herd is on pasture to be rotationally grazed, Abril is allowed into pastures closer to the barn. “As she gets slower, she doesn’t

want to make the long walk back and forth down the lane,” Cline said. “Part of the reason she’s made it as long as she has – especially the last couple years, even though she’s arthritic in all her joints, is slower and has trouble getting up and down – she’s smart about it. She’s gured out where she cannot let herself go to keep herself out of trouble. She’s a smart cow. She seems to gure stuff out pretty well.” That adaptation has helped her through the herd’s housing transitions. As a young cow, Abril started in the Cline’s tiestall barn. She then adapted to a new facility when the Clines built a parlor with a compost-bedded pack

barn in 2006. A few years later, the Clines transitioned the barn to sandbedded free stalls. “She was a little more prone to mastitis in the tiestall barn because she would leak and then lay in it, and we would run into problems,” Cline said. “It seemed getting her out of the tie stalls with mattresses and onto the pack and sand free stalls really did a lot of benet to her.” Other than her early mastitis cases and an occasional case of milk fever, Abril has not had many issues. Abril’s attitude has also helped her live a long life. “She’s relatively friendly, but she’s still kind of a boss cow,” Cline said. “She’s got that temperament that she never (ticked) you off enough to get rid of her when she was young, but she was never timid that she got knocked around and got herself hurt or didn’t milk enough. She’s always done what she’s needed to do.” As Abril ages, Cline continues to accommodate her however it is needed. And Abril will live out her days as the oldest cow on the farm.

Funds available to update livestock operations Minnesota livestock farmers and ranchers seeking to improve their livestock operation are encouraged to apply for the Agricultural Growth, Research and Innovation (AGRI) Livestock Investment Grant program. The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) anticipates awarding up to $789,000 using a competitive review process. The AGRI Programâ€™s Livestock Improvement Grants encourage long-term industry development in Minnesotaâ€™s $7 billion livestock industry through investment in facilities, infrastructure, and equipment. The program encourages new farmers and generational transitions in order to sustain the livestock industry in the state. Funding for the grants comes through the AGRI Program to advance Minnesotaâ€™s agricultural and renewable energy industries. Applicants may apply for up to 10% of their projectâ€™s total cost. Grant awards can range in size from $400 to $25,000. Each livestock operation is eligible to receive a lifetime maximum of $50,000 from this grant program. To be eligible for reimbursement by this grant, you must be invoiced and pay for all project materials and services between Jan. 1, 2021 and Dec. 31, 2022. We must receive your proposal no later than 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2020 for it to be considered. We encourage you to use our online application.

Although the show could not be held at the Wisconsin State Fair this year, it was still a spectacular show, showcasing the industry and its farmers very well. Coming out on top was Budjon-Abbott Alexandra-ET, exhibited by Kaelyn, Kenadee, and Keegan Weigel of Platteville. They took home a $1,500 prize sponsored by Compeer Financial. Alexandra had received a complimentary entry into the Futurity three years ago by being named the 2017 Junior All-Wisconsin Winter Calf. Alexandra was also awarded the rst place junior sponsored by Angela Davis-Brown, Ma Brown Holsteins & Jerseys and a cash prize sponsored by the Wisconsin Junior Holstein Association. Second place, Best Bred & Owned, and Best Udder of Show went to Mar-Linda-K Sweet Sensation exhibited by Mar-Linda-K Holsteins LLC of Johnson Creek. They were awarded $750 sponsored by International Protein Sires. Best Bred & Owned was sponsored by Robert and Randy Nigh of Lirr Farm and Best Udder of Show was sponsored by CentralStar Cooperative. Third place was awarded to Hilrose Doorman Eleanor exhibited by Hilrose Dairy LLC, Sherwood. They received $500 sponsored by Agropur. Eleanor was also awarded the Top Milk Production and Top Fat & Protein Production awards sponsored by Brian Greenman, Rural Mutual Insurance Agent. While the show is focused on the cows, their exhibitors were also looking their nest to compete for Best Dressed Awards. Best Dressed Junior went to Kaelyn Weigel, sponsored by the Barron County Junior Holstein Association. Joseph Opsal of Blue Mounds won Best Dressed Adult Male sponsored by Robert & Karyn Schauf. Yvonne Preder of Scenic-Edge Holsteins sponsored the Best Dressed Adult Female award, which was given to Amber Knorn of Green Bay. The afternoon’s program was led by the Mistress of Ceremonies, Pam Selz-Pralle of Humbird. She introduced the dignitaries present, cows, and award sponsors. Funding available for sustainable agriculture projects Farmers and Minnesota nonprot and educational organizations focused on testing new ideas in sustainable agriculture are encouraged to apply for a Sustainable Agriculture Demonstration (SustAg) Grant by 4 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 10, 2020. SustAg grant projects explore farm protability, energy efciency, and environmental benets of sustainable agriculture practices or systems. Grantees must be willing to share what they learn with others. Projects last two to three years and may be funded at up to $50,000, with applicants providing a dollar-for-dollar match on amounts above $25,000. A total of $200,000 is available this year. Applications from Minnesota farmers receive priority, but the program also funds Minnesota nonprot and educational organizations if Minnesota farmers are meaningfully involved in the project. The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) SustAg Program is part of the Agricultural Growth, Research, and Innovation (AGRI) Program, which administers grants to farmers, agribusinesses, schools, and more throughout the state of Minnesota. The AGRI Program exists to advance Minnesota’s agricultural and renewable energy sectors. SustAg grants have funded a wide range of projects; such as exploring farm diversication, cover crops and crop rotation, conservation tillage, and input reduction strategies and alternative energies like wind, methane, and biomass. Dairy Strong conference going virtual Dairy Strong, an annual conference that brings together farmers and a wide variety of others connected to the dairy community, will move to an online-only format in January, the Dairy Business Association (DBA) announced today. The DBA event this past January drew 600 farmers, corporate professionals, government and university representatives, and other partners for learning, networking, celebrating and having deep-dive discussions about challenges and opportunities. DBA is nalizing programming for the virtual event — Jan. 19-21 — and will announce details later. Past conferences had been held in Madison. The new format comes amid uncertainty about the pandemic. “Although the format will be different, our goal remains as it has always been — to provide an experience where ideas are shared, connections are made and people are inspired,” the group’s executive director, Tim Trotter, said. “Dairy Strong’s programming has always been unique. The change in format will make the conference even more so.” Cost, registration and sponsorship information will be announced later.
