Bob Traynor The Mas-D-Tec is Bob Traynor’s go-to item for monitoring 120 Holsteins milking at Honeycrest Farms, Spring Valley, Wis. “Our Mas-D-Tec monitoring and consistent use of Udder Comfort for fresh cows and prefresh heifers have played a big role in getting SCC under 200,000,” says Bob (left). “We check fresh cows a few days after calving to get a baseline. Cows with high readings get Udder Comfort after each of the next 3 to 4 milkings and we re-check. It pays.”

Tell us about your family: Wegnerlann Dairy, LLC is owned and operated by my in-laws, Jeff and Betty Wegner, along with me and my husband, Tom.
What’s the busiest time of day for you? Mornings tend to be busiest for me. My husband and I begin our day in the hospital barn, cleaning up refusals, bringing fresh feed, caring for newborns, and milking and examining fresh cows among other chores. Then, depending on the day, we will sort cows to be trimmed, work with our vet to perform a herd health check, move cows, or dry up cows. If nothing breaks, the afternoons are a bit slower; I can usually nd time to work on my farmer’s tan by mowing lawn around the barns. How much time do you spend doing farmwork compared to housework? I spend a majority of my time on the farm. However, I am responsible for most of the housework and yard work. My husband puts in extra hours at the farm by hauling manure, maintaining equipment and other jobs that I’m not as interested in. It only seems fair that I take care of a large portion of the cooking, cleaning and yard work. I would rather cook than try to x a milking unit any day. What do you do in your freetime and why? I like to spend my free time with family and friends. Whether it is canoeing down the river or sitting outside with a drink, I’m game for anything as long as I am in good company. What’s the best thing about farming? This is a tough question; there are so many great things about farming. For me, it is the ability to be outdoors and work closely with family. I think my husband is a pretty cool fella, so I feel lucky to be able to work with him every day. Farming isn’t just a career, it is a way of life. I am blessed to be able enjoy the outdoors with my family every day and call it work. When you look back on your life, what do you want to be remembered for? I hope I am remembered as someone who was hard working, caring and took pride in farming. As we look into the future, there will be a bigger disconnect between farm, food and consumer. My goal is to help bridge the gap and assure consumers that our practices and products are safe. I recently began blogging about every day farm life (www.moderndayfarmchick.com) as a way to reach consumers. In the future, I hope to work with the community by offering farm tours and knowledge. Do you have any ideas that could make farming easier for you and all farming women? As I stated before, the disconnect between farm and table is growing. A big struggle agriculture will face is assuring consumers that our methods and morals are safe. Women are great communicators and are able to easily empathize with consumers; the more farm women we can get to teach, blog, give tours, and share farm knowledge, the better off our industry will be. We need to start promoting our own practices and products. Tell us your most memorable experience while dairy farming. My favorite farm memories happened as a child. My sister and I got ourselves into a mess of shenanigans as kids. Whether it was racing through the barns on roller blades, getting stuck in the gravity box, pulling our stubborn show calves behind the gator, making dolls out of ears of corn, jumping hay bales or even throwing rocks at each other, we led a pretty wild life. I hope my future children have a similar childhood; you can’t put a price tag on that kind of stuff.

Tell us about your farm: My in-laws established the dairy farm in 1986. They started small in a tie stall barn and progressively grew to our current size of 500 milking cows. Today, we have a double-8 parallel milking parlor and a large freestall barn that houses most of our herd. We raise our heifer calves up to three months of age before sending them to a heifer raiser in a nearby town. Our heifer raiser will breed our heifers and bring them back to the dairy about a month and half prior to calving. We prefer to focus mostly on the cows, so we work with a custom harvester to grow and harvest alfalfa and corn for silage. My in-laws, my husband and I are all active on the dairy, but we also employ seven full-time employees and three part-time.
