PLAINVIEW, Minn. – Management changes have been made at Plainview Milk Products this month. Starting Aug. 1, Randy Paulson took over as general manager of Plainview Milk Products in Plainview, Minn. Previously, the 400-member cooperative had been led by Troy Gascoigne, who had been with the processor since January 2013. “I’m very excited to be here. There’s a skilled management team here, so I’m excited to work with them,” Paulson said about his new position. The opportunity at Plainview Milk Products lined up with his values and beliefs, Paulson said. “I believe co-ops give back to the industry. It’s more than just money, it’s about the industry and it’s a passion for what we do. This was an opportunity for me to work with a board and help form the future of Plainview Milk Products,” he said. Part of that future is pushing the co-op to be its best, he said. “I want Plainview Milk Products to be an extremely respected milk coop in the industry. And we’re poised to do that. Right now that’s our goal – to have respect from our peers, our customers, our producers,” Paulson said. Other goals Paulson has include increasing the plants capacity from its current 60 percent to 100 percent capacity, and reinvesting in the current facilities and equipment. “I want to be the market of choice for producers in this area,” Paulson said. “My focus right now is scheduling meetings with customers, both current and potential customers, and evaluating what they’re looking for.

I need to determine what direction we need to move in that will generate the highest returns for our investment. I think with a cooperative of this size, we can provide to a lot of niche market places,” Paulson said. But he does see challenges in the future, especially with nding a qualied labor force to operate the plant. “I think it’s a concern of not only our industry but anyone in manufacturing at this point. It seems like
the employee pool is slim,” Paulson said. He also knows it’s a tough time in the dairy industry right now, but remains optimistic. “The fortunate thing about times like this is that it makes us better managers. We have to survive. By coming through these times and when things start improving and prots start to increase they know what they need to do to survive the next one,” he said. Paulson said he is up for any Randy Paulson challenges that General Manager, may come along. Plainview Milk “I’m very Products competitive. No matter what it is I want to be the best at what I do or wherever I am,” he said. Paulson grew up on a 50-cow dairy near Rice Lake, Wis. He then went to work starting on the plant oor for Wisconsin Dairies (now Foremost Farms), while simultaneously going to college. Over the 28 years he was there, he worked his way up to plant manager at ve locations. He then worked as the general manager of the Arthur Schuman Inc. plant in Turtle Lake, Wis. He helped manage a plant renovation during their transition to make traditional Italian style cheese during his four years with the cheese company. “It was quieting down and I like to challenge myself so the opportunity [to be plant manager] at Jim Falls, Wis., came up for AMPI,” he said. Paulson had been with AMPI for ve years before joining Plainview Milk Products. “This was the rst opportunity I had to be the GM of a co-op where I work reporting to the executive board,” he said. “This is new for me. I’ve never had to set milk prices. I understand it, but I’ve never had to do it, which is a very anxious time for me.” But Paulson is condent he’ll do well. “I like challenges. I’m well connected with the industry and I have numerous contacts I can call for resources, which I do,” he said. And he’ll use his everyday philosophy to help him and the cooperative reach its goals. “We always need to grow. My philosophy is you’re either growing or you’re dying. You can’t stay status quo. There’s no such thing. That’s not a choice, so if you get comfortable being status quo, you’re in fact dying and I’m not going to do that,” Paulson said. “I’m always going to challenge myself and the people around me to be better than where we are at.”

Taylor County conservation engineer Ben Stanďƒ&#x;ey helped the Pearsons design their cow lanes in 2015 with hoof health and water runoff in mind. “We dug dramatic ditches along the lanes with culverts to get water away and out from the lane,â€? Stanďƒ&#x;ey said. “We then ďƒžlled the ditches with grass to prevent erosion and crowned the lane with clay before applying a layer of sand over the top.â€? Any water that runs off from the lane, as well as manure and other waste, is diverted through the system of ditches and culverts toward the manure pit. Since beginning to divert water and efďƒ&#x;uent toward the pit, Pearson has noted that the manure pit is much easier to stir and agitate. Tilth, or soil health, was also a hot topic at the pasture walk. Knopp reiterated using proper timing when planting cover crops in the fall, particularly winter rye, which he described as crop

under in the spring. “When it comes to winter rye, timing is huge,â€? said Knopp. “You want at least two to three inches of growth before it snows, and early snow cover can be a good thing. Then, in the spring, it should be moldboarded into the soil when it’s about 6 to 10 inches tall so it doesn’t become too ligniďƒžed.â€?
Knopp and Brandt also discussed soil conservation in regard to grazing, particularly because overgrazed pastures tend to have poor root structure. In turn, poor root structure causes soil aggregates to break down into ďƒžnes, which are easily eroded by wind and water to create a perfect storm for topsoil loss. “To aid soil retention, no till and zone till methods are recommended to preserve moisture levels and reduce crusting,â€? Brandt said. The main lesson of a pasture walk is to teach that grazing is about more than just letting dairy cows eat grass. Grazing is about establishing a symbiotic relationship between cows, farmers, forages, water and soil to create the best possible outcome for all parties involved. “It’s helping me ďƒžnd a balance between a healthy cow and a healthy checkbook,â€? The top selling market beef the grand champion market steer exhibited by Jacob Wessel of Colesburg. His steer sold for $2.60 per pound totaling $3,580.20 to Walt Wessel Family of Greeley. Nate Shirbroun, Farmersburg exhibited the Champion Rate of Gain winner which was purchased by Luana Savings Bank for $1.80 per pound. The Grand Champion Dairy Steer was sold by Jack Wiskus of Edgewood for $1.55 per pound to Bloomington Livestock. The Champion Rate of Gain winner for Dairy Steers was exhibited by Tess Hilgerson, Elkader and was purchased by FreedomBank for $1.45 per pound.
World Dairy Expo® Dairy Cattle Show announces entry ID requirement change The deadline to enter cattle for the 50th World Dairy Expo® Dairy Cattle Show is fast approaching. To avoid late fees, cattle entries must be postmarked or submitted online by midnight (CDT) on Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2016. Entry information, a complete schedule of events, rules and other updates can be found in the Premium Book or online at worlddairyexpo.com. Due to a backlog in ofcial USDA AIN 840 tags, the requirement to submit ofcial AIN and CCIA ID at the time of animal entry has been relaxed for the 2016 show. If exhibitors do not currently have an AIN or CCIA number for their animals, they can submit entries by selecting “pending” on the paper or electronic entry form. Although the ofcial USDA AIN or Canadian CCIA RFID number is no longer required at the time of entry, it must be listed on the health papers with a corresponding tag placed in the animal’s ear at the time of arrival on grounds. Acceptable forms of ID include a USDA AIN 840 tag or a Canadian CCIA 124 RFID tag. Cattle who were previously tagged (and born before March 11, 2015) with a USDA 900, 982, or 985 RFID tag will be grandfathered in under ADT and are eligible to enter the WDE grounds. Rabobank expects rental prices to fall and land values to follow A new report from the Rabobank Food & Agribusiness Research and Advisory group nds that order for U.S. ag commodity production activity to remain economically viable, land rent must decline. The report, “The Land Value Wave Dips: Land Values Set to Decline Further, Despite Sticky Rental Prices,” explores the impact of low commodity prices on land values and rent prices.. The report goes on to note that from 2006 to 2013, signicant increases in commodity prices, due to surging demand, signaled the need for more land to be converted to row crop production. The subsequent steep increases in agricultural land values have pulled enough acres into row crop production to oversupply most commodities, both domestically and globally. “The result of this oversupply has been to drive agri commodity price levels below breakeven. After two years of economic losses at the farm level – which resulted largely from the signicant drop in commodity prices – the cost of renting land remains sticky and unsustainably high,” notes report author and Rabobank senior analyst Sterling Liddell. According to Rabobank, in 2017/18 and moving forward, rent values need to begin dropping in order to balance with lower commodity prices over the long term. “We believe this will lead to the valuation of land also adjusting lower,” notes Liddell. “If rental costs remain sticky at unsustainable levels through the 2017/18 growing period, individual land assets face the threat of much deeper devaluation, as nutrient and crop protection programs are cut and abandonment (usage changes) increases.” Pasture-based dairy and livestock farm business course available online Would-be farmers can now learn about pasture-based production and business management without leaving home. The Wisconsin School for Beginning Dairy and Livestock Farmers (WSBDF), the rst course of its kind, is now available online. “For several years now, we have been asked by folks across the country about the possibility of our course becoming accessible online, and today it is a reality. This is deeply meaningful for me,” said Richard Cates, director of the WSBDF. The WSBDF, which is going into its 22nd year, is a cooperative effort of the Center for Integrated Agricultural Systems and Farm and Industry Short Course at the UW-Madison College of Agricultural and Life Sciences. The online course offers the same curriculum as the WSBDF pasture-based dairy and livestock seminar offered on-campus, and at distance learning sites. Online learning lets students enroll at any time and take the course from any location, at their own pace. Participants have access to live recordings of WSBDF lectures addressing a wide range of topics including business planning, farm selection and setup, parlor design, livestock health, organic production and principles, marketing, soil nutrient management, and much more. The perfect prize: A show animal
Beukema wins St. Croix County dairy heritage calf contest By Brittany Olson

NEW RICHMOND, Wis. – When Haley Beukema began showing dairy cattle nearly ve years ago, she made her debut in the showring with a Guernsey. One could say that – at least until she won this year’s St. Croix County Dairy Heritage calf – the New Richmond, Wis., native has been a Guernsey girl all her life. “Even though I show Guernseys, I have always liked the Ayrshire breed,” Haley, 13, said. After all, her mom, Liz, grew up showing Ayrshires in her home state of Rhode Island. While the Beukema family does not milk cows themselves, they own a string of Guernsey cattle for showing. Younger animals and dry cows are housed on their small farm near New Richmond, while milking cows are housed at a dairy farm near Cumberland, Wis. After an already illustrious rst few years in the showring – including a fourth-place nish out of 125 entrants in the junior showmanship contest at World Dairy Expo last fall – Haley decided to chart another course with her show string. With a little encouragement from her parents, she decided to enter the Dairy Heritage Calf Contest.

“I entered the contest to add a little variety, as well as a new show animal,” Haley said. “Also, the Ayrshire State Show is held in conjunction with the Guernsey State Show.” The Dairy Heritage Calf Contest began in 2010 as part of a drive by the St. Croix County 4-H dairy committee to provide a dedicated dairy project youth with a calf from a top dairy herd in the area to give that member a foothold in the dairy industry. Applicants must write an essay of 100 words or less explaining why they feel they should win the calf, and they must have an interview with the 4-H dairy committee before being selected as the top contestant. When Haley entered the contest this year, she was one of several applicants to compete for the prize. Upon submitting her essay, she was selected to interview with the committee during one of the county dairy judging practices. “Most of the committee was there helping at the practice anyway,” Haley said. When she arrived at the county fairgrounds in Glenwood City for the May Fair on May 7, she was presented with the award as soon as she got to the grounds. Her dad, Paul, already knew that his daughter was the winner. “They told me before they told her that she had won the calf,” Paul said with a smile. “I was so excited and happy,” Haley said. “They introduced me to the audience and explained why they picked me to win the calf, and then asked me to say a few words. was [speechless].” Since Haley was still set on getting an Ayrshire calf, the search began. While the committee does not award a calf in the esh, they award a nancial package that helps the winner purchase a calf of their choosing. Haley and Randy Peterson, a member of the dairy committee, spent two days traveling from farm to farm to nd the right animal. “I started out wanting a pure white calf,” she said. “But I wanted to look at all ages of heifers rst.” Liz herself has always been partial to white cattle. When Haley and Randy arrived at Glen Nelson’s farm in Milltown, Wis., she ended up falling in love with a calf that was almost pure red, except for a small white streak on her forehead, and became the proud owner of Forest Park Berkely Sidse. Even though Sidse is as red as a rose, things have not always been rosy between calf and owner. “Sidse was used to mostly seeing Glen all her life, and she became attached to my dad right away. I think she only likes men,” Haley said, laughing. “It doesn’t help that I started halter breaking her right away, either.” Either way, Sidse had a busy summer ahead of her with Haley on the halter. Haley earned junior champion at the St. Croix County Fair, and took Sidse to the Wisconsin State Ayrshire Show and Wisconsin State Fair. She will also be showing her new calf at the National Cattle Congress in Waterloo, Iowa, this fall. In addition to attending some

In fact, she has been studying sire catalogs closely and has two bulls picked out for potential use down the road. “I want to breed for an animal with good feet and legs, and I’m looking at sires that have strong fertility traits, especially positive daughter pregnancy rates,” Haley said. “In Haley’s mind, Sidse has already calved and we’ve got an Ayrshire heifer calf running around,” said Paul with a chuckle. “You know that when your 13-year-old
daughter is sitting on the couch with sire catalogs all around her that she’s fairly interested in the breeding side of things.” In keeping with the Dairy Heritage Calf Contest’s mission to give a deserving youth an animal to get them started in the dairy industry, Haley plans to stay in the industry long after she’s done with high school. As of right now, she wants to attend Cornell University to study dairy science. “Before I started showing I wanted to go into culinary arts, but after my rst show I realized I loved dairy cattle more,” said Haley.

Phil Townsend, UW-Madison professor, will discuss new research using remote sensing. A use of remote sensing in the eld tour includes discussion of utilizing remote sensing to estimate soybean emergence and sudden death syndrome; hyperspectral imaging of soybean trials; using UAVs for remote sensing: how to and FAA regulations; and using sensors for N management in wheat. UW-Madison College of Agricultural and Life Sciences researchers and UW-Extension specialists will host ve tours scheduled throughout the day. Topic-specic tours will depart the Public Events Facility at 8:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Lunch will available on the site for a $5 donation to the Badger Crops Club. NOTE: This is an outstanding herd of young, home-raised, extremely well uddered, high producing dairy cattle. This herd originated from the Alcuin Sand herd established in the 1950’s. The herd contains Holstein, Red Holstein, Swedish Red, Brown Swiss Composite and Jersey Composites. This herd has been on owner testing for 25 years with current records at 2X 21,500 pounds milk, 750 fat and 640 protein. SCC averaging 150,000 to 200,000. Approximate 75 pound tank average. No BST. Several are recently fresh. All cows are milked in double 8 parlor and housed in free stall bedding pack facility. The herd is based upon years of artificial breeding with Holstein and Red & White herd sires from leading area herds used the past several years. The herd is on an excellent herd health program with all cattle receiving the Triangle 10 vaccine, as well as wormed and poured seasonally. Cows are given J-Vac, Scour Guard and are on an excellent dry cow treatment program. Hoofs are trimmed regularly. Open Role: An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated professional to join our team as a Genetic Mating Service Evaluator in our Midwest Territory. This is a dual role that will develop relationships to help grow business by providing genetic expertise to the sales force. You will also focus on communication and coordination with ABS Àeld staff to implement the GMS and assist in gathering data for genetic audits. High level summary of accountabilities include: • Work with Independent Representatives and sales people to systematically provide timely evaluation of cattle in customer herds on an ongoing basis. • Communicate directly with producers to design a breeding program meeting customer needs. • Work through the local District Business Manager and relevant sales staff to execute and deliver the plan • Master existing genetic tools and leverage them to aid the generation of sales in targeted herds The Candidate: The successful candidate will have: • Bachelor of Science degree in Dairy Science, Agribusiness or related Àeld. (Exceptional experience may be considered in lieu of educational requirement) • Previous sales experience preferred, preferably in the agriculture industry. • Valid driver’s license The ideal candidate will have effective listening, communication and presentation skills, proÀciency in time management and will be extremely organized. Solid sales and negotiation skills will give the right candidate a competitive advantage in this role. What Can We Offer You?
