Gerrits said one major factor in using the MRF stall plow over the auger version he previously used has been time and labor. “We went from cleaning 2,500 stalls in 12 days down to four days and we are using less people during the sand removal process,” Gerrits said. “Using the stall plow allows us to remove more sand quicker and reduces hand shoveling by double.” Another plus of the MRF stall plow is how basic the attachment is; there are no moving parts just a plow moving sand away from the stalls. “It’s a low maintenance, easy to use tool. The stall plow allows us to make one pass instead of two,” Gerrits said. “Basically, it boils down to simplicity. No motors, no moving parts.” In a year with low milk prices, the price is a bargain compared to other bedding extractors. “The plow came in less than half of our previous tool,” Gerrits said. If you are looking for or considering purchasing a new extractor, the MRF stall plow is the way to go. “If you already remove sand from stalls, this may be an easy way to cut time and costs,” Gerrits said. “It also improves employee morale.”

Carncross named Holstein USA National Distinguished Young Breeder Lodi dairyman works diligently to reach new goals By Danielle Nauman Staff Writer
LODI, Wis. – For producers contemplating embarking on the rollercoaster of dairy farming, Craig Carncross has advice. “You have to be resilient and able to bounce back. The worst case scenario is if you do fail, and you just have to gure out how to pick yourself back up,” he said. Carncross was named this year’s Holstein USA Distinguished Young Breeder. In addition to achieving the recognition at the national level, he also won that same award at the state level in 2011. The Distinguished Young Breeder award is given annually to a Holstein USA member under the age of 40 actively involved in dairying with registered Holsteins. Selection is based on successes the applicant has achieved with their herd and the goals they have set for the future and the plans they have to make those goals reality. Carncross has a 420-cow
herd of registered Holsteins, milked in a parlor and housed in a freestall barn. He farms a total of 750 acres with his family. Of that acreage, 500 is owned and an additional 250 acres are farmed in a partnership with a neighbor. Their new facility was built in 2007, capping off a somewhat awkward and laborintensive expansion. Carncross farms with his parents, Gordon and Emily. His wife, Jen, works off the farm as a nurse. They have two sons, Gavin, 8, and Nolan,6. “In 2007, when we built this facility, there weren’t a lot of 400-cow breeder herds in Wisconsin,” Carncross said.

ConĆ&#x;nued from CARNCROSS | Page 3 breeding in his herd are fairly simple. “We have always had a strong focus on good udders, udder traits are weighted pretty heavily, and we don’t skip too many generations of production,â€? he said. Primary sire selection criteria also includes looking for bulls high in pounds of protein, as the farm’s milk is shipped to a cheese plant. Carncross said his use of sires has evolved over the years. “We use more bulls, but less of them. We have fewer daughters of each bull, and there aren’t very many bulls we’ll go back and use again. Bulls like Mogul and Montross worked well in my herd. My Moguls are as good uddered of a group from top to bottom as I’ve had. I’m pleased with his consistency, and have gone back and used more of him,â€? he said. He also has opinions on using genomics. “Genomics is kind of like a puzzle with not quite enough pieces to get to the solution,â€? said Carncross. “It allows us to make faster genetic progress, and in the dairy industry in general, I think we’ve always been further ahead genetically than we are with management.â€? Another trait Carncross looks at is productive life. “But it’s more of a secondary trait for me. I’m not trying to breed bigger cows, but I also don’t select for negative stature,â€? he said.
Especially in the summer, Carncross sees the most trouble in the post-fresh pens with the older, larger cows. Longevity and high lifetime production totals are important to Carncross, as well. “I take a lot of pride in the number of cows we’ve had that have gone over 200,000 and 300,000 pounds lifetime [production],â€? Carncross said. They have had 13 cows surpass the 300,000-pound mark, three of which remain in the herd today. “I’m conscious about trying to breed for what I consider to be the ideal cow, one who will score from 87 to 91 points, with excellent udders and feet and legs, cows that will stay in my herd ďƒžve to seven lactations. If the cows do that, they’ll be at the 200,000-pound mark when they leave,â€? Carncross said. Currently, cows stay in the herd an average of four to six lactations. For Carncross there are many advantages of having cows stay in the herd for a long time, including increasing the number of 2-year-olds he has available to merchandise. In 2016, 108 head were sold off the farm for dairy. Their merchandising includes selling young cows and springers to other herds, as well as consigning calves and heifers to various consignments. Carncross has the herd enrolled in Holstein USA’s Complete Program and participates in one whole-herd

Carncross said. “It’s a good way to see what needs correcting throughout the herd. He said his herd Breed Age Average (BAA) is higher today than it has ever been, including when they were milking 50 cows in the tiestall barn. “We are at 52 excellent cows in the herd after the last classiďƒžcation. A goal of mine would be to get to 70 excellents in the herd within the next ďƒžve years,â€? Carncross said. Carncross does not put too much emphasis on breeding for extremes in either type or production, or for newer trends in dairy cattle breeding, such as A2A2 and polled genetics. Instead, he continues to place his focus on building cow families that produce offspring that will ďƒžll his barn and bulk tank with high lifetime production. Service to Wisconsin Holstein Board Carncross has been a member of the Wisconsin Holstein Association Board of Directors since 2015 and is currently
serving as the vice president. In this role, he is a chairman for both the ďƒžnance and the breed improvement committees. Carncross is proud of where the association is currently, and believes it will enjoy a healthy future. He points to the generosity of the membership when it comes to providing for things such as the scholarship fund and junior activities. “Our junior program is one of the bright lights of Wisconsin. It’s well utilized by juniors and well-funded. It continues to grow and be strong,â€? Carncross said. “It adds excitement to the organization and our future, both for the association and the industry.â€? Carncross strongly urges members to become involved in the associations that serve them, and to take advantage of opportunities afforded to them, such as awards like the Distinguished Young Breeder award. “It was very eye-opening for me to work on this,â€? Carncross said of the application process. “It was kind of gratifying to realize that many of the goals I had set for myself ďƒžve years ago have been realized in some manner. It gave me a good base to set more goals to move forward with for the next ďƒžve years.â€?

Peterson leads Wisconsin State Fair milking parlor team First-year superintendent enjoys both kids, cows By Danielle Nauman Sta Writer
WEST ALLIS, Wis. – It’s a pretty evident truth to anyone who knows Randy Peterson: he loves kids, he loves cows, and he has scored a gig that gives him the opportunity to spend some time with both. After two years of working on the milk house crew at the Wisconsin State Fair, Peterson is enjoying his ďƒžrst year as the superintendent of the milking parlor at the fair, which is home to one of the largest junior shows in the nation. The Wilson, Wis., native has taken over for Jerry Wendt, who retired from the Randy Peterson Wisconsin State Fair position after two years of leading the crew. “When I started working in here, one guy came in and said, ‘You just can’t stay away, can you?’â€? said Peterson with a grin. “No, I really can’t. I’ve been showing all my life, and I really miss the cows and showing at the fairs.â€? Love of state fair goes back 46 years Peterson’s love for the Wisconsin State Fair began in 1971, the ďƒžrst year he made the 300-plus mile trip to exhibit in West Allis, Wis. “I was 12 or 13 years old, I brought a Guernsey named Happy Hallow C Nancy, a January calf. I was ďƒžrst in showmanship and she was ďƒžrst in her
class. I still have the plaques in my cow room at home,� said Peterson, referring to his own version of a 10- by 20-foot man-cave room in his house he has furnished with awards won by his Misty Meadows Guernsey herd over the years. Tough times call for tough decisions The Petersons dispersed their herd on Aug. 26, 2014, due to health issues Peterson experienced. At the time, Peterson was milking around 30 cows, three times daily. “I had a stroke that May, and that’s when we made the decision to sell the cows,� he said. “I was lucky, I didn’t ignore the signs and went in right away, otherwise I’d be paralyzed or dead.� The Peterson family enjoyed exhibiting their herd for many years. The pinnacle of their career came in 2012 when Misty Meadows Adacka Pixie hit an out-of-the-park grand slam, being named Grand Champion at the Wisconsin State Guernsey State Show, Wisconsin Junior State Fair, Minnesota State Fair and capped off the year being named the Grand Champion of both the open and junior Guernsey shows at World Dairy Expo. Peterson’s love of kids is apparent in the fact that he still had one of his Guernseys, a daughter of Pixie, on exhibit at this year’s junior State Fair, being shown by a neighbor girl who shares his love of cows and fairs. “We have lots of kids who aren’t our kids,� Peterson said about the kids they’ve met and helped out along the way. His giving attitude and spirit is not limited solely to dairy cattle, either. treasurer of the St. Croix County 4-H dairy project, and serve on the fair board, as well as being on our village council and my church council,” he said. Another way to give back When Peterson was approached in December by Brian Bolan, the Wisconsin State Fair Senior Agricultural Director, about running the milking parlor, it seemed like a natural t to add to his list of activities. In the position, Peterson has four or ve workers helping him. “It’s a busy place at milking time, especially the rst few milkings, getting all the permits wrote up for the kids,” Peterson said. Cattle are allowed to move in the Tuesday before the fair opens, and must be in place by Wednesday afternoon. This year, Peterson estimates there are around 110 cows being milked in the parlor during the junior dairy session of the state fair. That’s up from around 80 cows last year. New to the fair is the rule that exhibitors can bring three head now, instead of only two, if one of those animals is a milking female. Last year, ownership requirements for milking females were changed, allowing managerial cows to be shown, as well. “Having been an exhibitor, I try to be really cognizant of what the exhibitors need. I know they

like to keep their routines as close to home as they can to keep the cows on track,” Peterson said. He said he has tried to change the milking schedule to make it more exhibitor-friendly. One of his duties as the milk house superintendent was to attend the dairy chaperone’s meeting, where he explained the changes he was implementing, as well as general milking parlor procedures, including encouraging people to have a helper carry a tub behind each cow to help keep things clean and tidy. “It’s been good so far,” he said, “I’ve been getting good feedback from the exhibitors and parents who come to the parlor.” In addition to the cows on the fairgrounds for the junior dairy and the open dairy sessions, there are six cows featured for public education in the House of Moo exhibit. These cows have their own milking schedule, including ve public performances used to educate people on the dairy industry and milk production. Peterson arrived at the State Fair Park Sunday night to clean the milk house and make the necessary preparations. The milk inspector came on Thursday and passed the facility with ying colors. Peterson has taken up residence in a dorm room at the Tommy G. Thompson Youth Center until he nishes cleaning and closing up the parlor the Monday or Tuesday after the fair is over. For his efforts, he receives room and board in the Youth Center, with meals, as well as a stipend for his efforts. “This stuff is in my blood,” Peterson said. “After we sold the cows, I missed the contact with the cows and all the friends we had made showing. Doing this is a way for me to spend some time with both.”

Schmitts clean up after storm Straight line winds on July 19 damaged freestall barn, other buildings By Krista Kuzma

FORT ATKINSON, Iowa – A storm that rolled through Schmitt Dairy on the evening of July 19 caused damage at the 530-cow farm near Fort Atkinson, Iowa. “Milking was just getting started. The wind picked up just like any storm. It just got stronger and stronger, and we couldn’t see anything because of the dust,” said Glen Schmitt, who dairies together with his brother, Greg, along with others in the family. “It got pretty wicked.” After the storm passed, the Schmitts realized one-fourth or about 120 feet of their freestall was gone. They also had mulGlen Schmitt tiple holes in the roof from deDairy farmer bris, the wall of their shop was blown out along with the door, and one wall of their sawdust bay also blew out. A large branch shattered the front window on one of their tractors and downed trees landed on their electrical wire, causing electrical damage in their house on the farm. “We were told it was straight line winds, but the way some things were wrapped and how the windows blew out instead of in, it had to have been some sort of rotation. It didn’t touch down much, but there was still a lot of damage,” Schmitt said. A few cows suffered minor scrapes, but other than that, no cows were injured. The bigger impact is felt because of the overcrowding due to onefourth of the barn not being available at all times. “When the sun is out the cows don’t even come out of the building. They hunker in the shade. The nighttime is beautiful. They go out there when the sun sets and get comfortable. But when it rains they don’t want to be out there,” Schmitt said.

The stress of overcrowding has caused some mastitis in the herd, but the Schmitts hope to remedy that by having a roof back on the barn by the end of August. They don’t expect the repairs to be fully complete by that time, but at least they will have a roof, Schmitt said. The family is thankful for the people who came to help when they needed it. “It was surprising how as soon as the storm was over, there were so many people who showed up. There were people I didn’t even know here – getting cows in the right spot, raking branches,” Schmitt said. “It’s the small community – so many neighbors and friends who are so helpful. It’s so nice to have so many people willing to help out.”

When do you help with chores? I usually help with morning chores, such as scraping the holding pen after milking and mixing feed for heifers, dry cows, and milking cows. I help with whatever tasks we have lined up for the day, eat lunch around noon, and come back to help with afternoon and night chores like scraping the freestall barn and pushing up feed. I also help switch our three groups of cows, as well as help with all the calvings and making sure the cow and calf are perfectly healthy. What are your favorite and leastfavorite chores? My favorite chore is mixing feed. I really enjoy measuring out the feed and mixing it all up and feeding it off. My least favorite chore is cutting the plastic for the bunker silos.

What is your favorite animal on the farm? My soon-to-be-7-year-old cow, Justine. She is a red and white Holstein – one of the rst red and whites I have owned. She is a show cow and I’ve had her since she was a calf. I retired her from showing last year, and now she roams freely in the freestall barn as she pleases. I now own 10 to 15 registered Red and White Holsteins.

U of MN Organic Dairy Day will be Aug.15 at the West Central Research and Outreach Center (WCROC), Morris. With nearly 125 head of organic dairy cattle, the WCROC looks at everything from y control and herd health to pasture and forages for today’s organic dairy farmers. Organic Dairy Day offers producers the opportunity to network with others, and gure out what might work best for their individual farms. Admission is free; pre-registration requested. Seminars include: • Organic Dairy Research Update with Brad Heins, Associate Professor of Dairy Science, U of MN WCROC. Showcasing the latest advancements in organic dairy research at the WCROC. • Economics of Organic Dairying with Larry Tranel, Extension Dairy Specialist with Iowa State University. A high-tech cattle feed bunk that measures individual feed intake will be demonstrated by Garland Dahlke, Iowa State assistant scientist. The Armstrong Research Farm is located at 53020 Hitchcock Ave. near Lewis, which is 13 miles southwest of Atlantic on Highway 6, one-half mile south on 525th Street and three-quarters of a mile east on Hitchcock Avenue. The Pat and Marcia Parker family are excited to welcome holstein enthusiasts to their family’s farm PMJ’s Dairy for the 2017 Vernon County Holstein Twilight Meeting on Aug. 17. The twilight meeting is a time for people to gather for food and fellowship while celebrating the dairy industry and showcasing a Vernon County dairy operation. This year’s outstanding family hosting the event is the Pat and Marcia Parker family. Located in Avalanche, PMJ’s Dairy has been home to the Parker family since they purchased the family farm in 1990. They are proud to call this century farm home as they were honored at the 2015 Wisconsin State Fair for owning and operating a family farm that has been running for a full century. Since owning the farm, Parkers have made improvements including installing a Double 6 milking parlor in 2006. Today, they have 159 holstein milking and dry cows, 43 bred heifers, and 92 young heifers, providing milk to Westby Cooperative Creamery. They own and rent 450 acres of cropland where they grow corn silage, haylage, and snaplage with dry hay being purchased. They also have an additional 100 acres of pasture for their cattle. Pat and Marcia have enjoyed raising their four children on the family farm. All four are Westby Area High School alumni who exhibited dairy cattle at the Vernon County Fair under Westby FFA. Together, the Parker family will welcome the public to their beautiful farm located off of County S near Avalanche. An evening meal will be provided along with the opportunity to try your skill at dairy cattle judging beginning at 7 p.m. A program, hosted by the Vernon County Holstein Association will follow at 8 p.m. with National Holstein Association, Wisconsin Holstein Association, and Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board reports. The Barron County Holstein Breeder’s would like to invite all dairymen and Holstein enthusiasts to the Barron County Twilight meeting, hosted by the Jeff and Debbie Wille Family. The event will be held on Friday, Aug. 18, at 7:30 p.m. at their farm, Image-Point Dairy, located at 2291 16th Street, Rice Lake. A meal will be served and will also include ice cream sundaes and root beer oats. Visitors can view the farm and participate in a dairy judging contest. There will also be a collection of antique toy farm machinery and dairy memorabilia on display. Visitors will have the opportunity to support the Barron County Junior Holstein Association by bidding at a worker auction. There will also be door prizes donated by area agricultural businesses. Young Cooperators Bryanna and Dylan Handel are set to host the second FarmFirst summer picnic on their farm in Barneveld, Wis. on Aug. 22. As a family-friendly event, this picnic is intended to bring dairy farmer members together, for a chance to socialize and network. The event will focus on bringing young dairy farmers together, ensuring that they are connected with other farmers and industry resources to ensure they have the right tools moving into the future. Attendees to B. Kurt Dairy will have a chance to learn more about how Bryanna’s attention to detail keeps her cows cool and comfortable and what she does to keep her focus on components for her Jersey herd. They also pasture-graze their herd seven months out of the year. Guests will have a chance to tour the farm, and there will also be outdoor games for kids. The picnic will also include a brief presentation by Brenda Murphy, Director of Producer Communications and Programs at the Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board (WMMB), as she will share the latest on industry data and campaigns for what WMMB has done in dairy promotion. Another intention of the picnic is to gather more interest and awareness about the Young Cooperator Program available at the FarmFirst Dairy Cooperative. FarmFirst Young Cooperators are deďƒžned as producers between the ages of 18 and 50, interested in getting more involved in the cooperative and industry through educational, social and leadership events. Lunch is provided by the cooperative; RSVP is encouraged to ensure an accurate meal count. Iowa State University’s Organic Agriculture Program will sponsor a ďƒželd day devoted to organic research and production practices Aug. 22 at the Neely-Kinyon Research and Demonstration Farm near Greenďƒželd. The ďƒželd day will start at 4 p.m. with a light supper at 5:30 p.m. The farm is located at 2557 Norfolk Avenue, Greenďƒželd, which is two miles south of Greenďƒželd on Highway 25, one mile east and one half mile north. The ďƒželd day will begin with a farm tour of the Long-Term Agroecological Research experiment, a comparison of organic and conventional crops, and the Organic Vegetable Research (OVR) experiment, which compares performance of organic production with cover crops versus tilled and mulched systems. The OVR partnered with Bill Tracy of the University of WisconsinMadison, in a trial of organic sweet corn varieties, which are bred for insect and disease tolerance, along with excellent taste. Cynthia Cambardella, a USDA Agricultural Research Service scientist and Iowa State associate professor, will present soil and water quality data. She has documented a 50 percent reduction in nitrate loading from organic vs. conventional systems at her Ames research site. Mike Witt, ISU Extension, will discuss issues facing producers this summer, including insects and disease, herbicide drift and weather problems, which affected planting and potential yields from drought stress. Denise O’Brien, of Rolling Acres Farm in Atlantic, will speak after dinner highlighting organic practices on her certiďƒžed organic integrated vegetable/livestock farm. Since 1976, O’Brien and Larry Harris have been committed to organic production and cultivating local food. She will share tips for successful organic production and discuss this year’s growing and marketing opportunities and challenges.
