Sunrise Dairy expands its operation by adding robotic milkers
Growing with robots

CASTLEWOOD, S.D. – Sietse Andringa and his family have experienced innumerable changes since they moved to South Dakota from Canada in 2003. Sietse and his wife, Aafke, have six children: Ytsje, 16, Jan, 14, Aukje, 12, Hessel, 10, Gerrit, 3, and Melle, 1. Sietse and Aafke grew up in Holland but moved to Canada in 1999 to start dairy farming. They now milk 1,800 cows on two farms, one that is using recently installed robots, near Castlewood, S.D. “We came to South Dakota because the Canadian milk quota system was so restrictive,” Sietse said. The Andringas began dairying in America with the purchase of a newly-built 350-cow dairy. They named their new farm Sunrise Dairy. Sunrise Dairy has grown steadily over the years and is now home to 1,800 head. The operation also includes 1,500 rented acres of corn that are harvested as silage and 800 rented

The cows at Sunrise Dairy’s main facility rest in freestalls that are bedded with sand and are milked three times a day in a double-30 parallel parlor. But when the Andringa family recently decided to expand, they opted to go with robotic milkers. In 2014, they purchased a dairy farm 1.5 miles west of their home farm. The dairy had a 200-cow freestall barn and a double-10 parlor. “But the parlor was nearly
shot and wasn’t worth xing,” Sietse said. Labor was another problem that came with the new farm. “It was tough to keep it going the way it was due to our labor situation,” Sietse said. “We felt there wasn’t enough work there to justify hiring another full-time employee. Our family ended up doing much of the work ourselves.” The Andringas decided to tear out the old parlor. In its place, they constructed a new
milking facility that includes a room to house four Lely robotic milkers. They also added onto the existing pole barn, making it capable of housing 240 head of milk cows and 240 head of dry cows. Headlocks were installed throughout the facility and its freestalls were switched from sand bedding to water beds. The Andringas also installed tunnel ventilation in the barn. The completed facility has the footprint of a giant U. The
four robots are housed in one leg of the U, with freestalls occupying the transverse section and the opposite leg. This facility is the rst of its kind, with 240 cows and four robots located in a single pen. “I was told that this layout wouldn’t work, that the cows needed to be able to see the robots at all times,” Sietse said. “But I said, what about robot operations where the cows are let outside to graze? Those cows can’t see the robots all the time. I was pretty sure that this conguration would work.” On Aug. 3, 2016, the robots milked the rst cows at Sunrise Dairy West. “The rst three days, we had 12 people pushing cows through the robots 24 hours a day,” Sietse said. “Friends, neighbors and our family pitched in to help. All of the animals we moved over were in their rst lactation. Some were fresh, some were mid-lactation and some were near dry-off. In the main dairy, we put our cows into 240 head groups, so they were already socialized with each other. After three weeks or so, 99 percent of the cows were milking themselves in the robots.” With nearly a year of robot milking under their belts, Sunrise Dairy has a good sense of how things are going including an increase in production. The cows being milked in the robots are giving 10 pounds of milk per

The cows at the robot facility average between 85 and 90 pounds per day with a 3.7 percent butterfat test. Reproduction is also much better in the robot barn, Sietse said. “I think the success of the robot barn is due to a combination of factors. The saying ‘happy wife, happy life’ also applies to dairy cows,” Sietse said. The Andringas have observed that the cows in their robot facility are more docile. “The cows get to hang out and do whatever,” Sietse said. “We humans no longer come into their barn and herd them into a holding pen. And the water beds have been a big hit with the cows. We like the water beds because they need a lot less maintenance than sand bedding.” The addition of robotic milkers wasn’t the only change during the past year at Sunrise Dairy. Last summer, the Andringas installed two automatic calf feeders. “We raise all of our own replacement animals,” said Ytsje, who plans to join her family’s dairy operation after she completes her education. “With labor being such an issue, we decided to install a pair of automatic calf feeders in an existing hoop barn.” The automatic calf feeders have proven their worth at Sunrise Dairy. “The calf feeders have worked out very well for us,” Ytsje said. “They have cut down on our labor costs and the calves are growing great.” They are currently switching their main calf facility to automatic feeders,
having already installed two feeders with plans to put in 10 more. “Everybody in the robot world is still learning,” Sietse said. “You need to have a different mindset when you milk with robots, especially when it comes to formulating the ration that you give the cows.” Part of the reason for installing robotic milkers at Sunrise Dairy was to help make room for the next generation. “I think that robots are going to be the future,” Sietse said. “We are very satised with how well our robots have performed. We like that they do their jobs in a consistent manner.” The Andringas are so pleased with their milking robots that plans are already in the works to add onto their robot barn and install another four robotic milkers. Sietse stressed the importance of good service in a robotic dairy facility. “We are grateful for all the support and service that we have received … ,” he said. The Andringa family has seen a lot of changes over the years. There can be no doubt that changes will continue to be a big part of their future.

Six generations later Perkins dairy being recognized as sesquicentennial farm By Krista Kuzma

RED WING, Minn. – After 150 years and with the sixth generation recently entering the partnership, the Perkins family’s farm is still going strong. “I never felt pushed into it. That was the way of life and we
enjoyed it,” said Larry Perkins, the current patriarch of the family. Minnesota Farm Bureau is recognizing the Perkins’ 1,000cow dairy near Red Wing, Minn., as a sesquicentennial farm this year. The farm now includes Larry and Carol along with their two sons and their wives, Tom and Kim, and Brad and Pam.

Tom and Kim’s son, Tim, in addition to Brad and Pam’s son and daughter-in-law, Jake and Kelsey, are also involved. When it was rst homesteaded in 1867, the farm was diversied and stayed that way for nearly 100 years. “But dairy has always been a part of it,” said Larry, who has been farming since he was a kid. Carol joined the farm when she and Larry were married in 1958. They liked the independence of farming, Larry said.
“We never considered anything else. We liked farming,” Larry said. In their stanchion barn, they milked 22 cows and slowly grew their herd while raising their family. With the stanchion barn starting to show its wear over the years, the Perkins family built their rst parlor in 1974 to accommodate their herd of 60 cows. When Tom and Brad started getting more into the dairy,
the farm’s focus shifted from numerous livestock to a single species. By 1980, the brothers formed a partnership with their dad. “I was happy and proud they thought enough of the business to try to continue on,” Larry said. This year marks the sixth generation’s entry into the partnership with Tim and Jake joining the operation.

Larry said about why the farm has been successful in lasting for a century and a half. Brad said he had good role models. “We have to give lots of credit to our parents for getting us started,â€? he said. Larry agreed.
“It was the same with our parents, too,â€? he said. Over the years, the Perkins family has worked with the ebbs and ďƒ&#x;ows of the milk price, which is another reason why they’ve made it 150 years. “We’ve grown slowly over 50 years with a few bigger steps when we felt we could do it and did smaller things on years we didn’t want to stick our necks out,â€? Tom said. “We did things at the right time to make it ďƒžnancially possible.â€? Plus, learning a hard work

ethic has been passed down from one family member to the next. “We keep at it until everything gets done,â€? Brad said about a philosophy the family follows. In the future, the Perkins family hopes to continue to grow and develop with the industry. “It’s always changing,â€? Tom said. “We want to continue with progression and staying ahead of progression.â€? However, they don’t know what that will look like. “Forty years ago, Dad would have never thought we would be milking 1,000 cows. In another 40 years maybe it will be 2,000, 10,000 or no growth. I have no idea,â€? Tom said. But for the Perkins family, the farm isn’t about the size of their dairy. “It’s more than [cow] numbers ‌ that’s why we made it. We’ve been economically viable,â€? Brad said.

It’s also been about family and working together. Ultimately, that is what has kept the Perkins family members going. Sticking together brought them through one of the toughest challenges. In 2000, they built their current parlor and one of their freestall barns, and tripled the number of cows they had. In addition to a steep learning curve of going from family help to hired labor, the family also endured a dramatic drop in milk price for the following two years. “It was deďƒžnitely difďƒžcult,â€? Tom said. The Perkins family stuck together and were able to make it through the low. In years since, they have built two more freestall barns, two calf barns and a heifer barn. “So far it’s been a great improvement,â€? Tom said about the heifer barn completed last year. “It’s better management-wise and a better environment for the

heifers.� Despite the hard times, the Perkins family has tried to keep life and farming in perspective. “The positives outweighed the challenges,� Larry said. Tom agreed. “And the positives were taking on the challenges and winning,� he said. The current farm owners hope their ancestors would be proud of the way they forged on with the family’s farming roots. “I’m proud to be a part of it and keep it going,� Larry said. “And I’m thankful for the start [from our ancestors].� Because each one of them feels like it is their job to keep it moving forward as each new generation comes along. “I’ve only been here a short part of the 150 years,� Tom said. Together, each short ownership has combined to form into this year’s celebration as a sesquicentennial farm.

Job turned passion Two young women nd work on dairy, become royalty By Krista Kuzma

LAKE CITY, Minn. – Friends since rst grade, Heather Gerken and Rachel Fick have shared many experiences together. Perhaps one of the most life-shaping experiences has been working on the same dairy farm. Gerken and Fick work for Fred, Peggy and Brian Keller, who milk 110 cows on their farm near Lake City, Minn. Their job working with cows has turned into a passion for the dairy industry, so much so that the two 18-yearolds are Wabasha County dairy royalty. Gerken started at the farm at the age of 13. She wanted a job, but it needed to be close to where she lived since she didn’t have a license to drive. After meeting the Kellers at a community picnic, Gerken realized their dairy – only three miles away from where she lived – would be a perfect place to earn a little cash. She also knew she would like the work since she always enjoyed visiting her cousins’ dairy in southern Iowa twice a year. “I hate pigs and love cows,” said Gerken, who lives on a hog and beef farm. A few years later, Fick was also searching for employment. “I wanted to work with cows because I love cows. A dairy farm is a good t because beef farms are more seasonal. I needed a job with actual hours,” said Fick, who grew up on a beef and crop farm. Gerken had a solution – Fick could work at Kellers’ dairy and the two could work together. Now, the two are capable of doing almost all the chores on the farm. Although their main jobs are feeding calves and milking cows, they can also feed heifers and cows, move cattle and mix feed, among other jobs. “I like working with the calves. They’re fun,” Fick said. Gerken likes milking and interacting with each of the cows’ personalities. “I have way too many favorites,” Gerken said about the herd. Since joining the employee roster at the Kellers’ farm, Gerken and Fick have enjoyed their time. “I like my coworkers and bosses so it’s fun to work here,” Fick said. “Fred always has life lessons for us and barn chats while milking are always fun.” Plus, they’ve learned more about other ways of agriculture. The Kellers milk 110 cows near Lake City, Minn. “With beef farms, when times get tough you can alter feedings with pastures and you can do things a little differently, but with dairy, no matter if the price drops, the input is always the same,” Fick said. Fick has also learned how two different dairy farms work. In addition to doing chores for the Kellers, she works at another dairy near Lake City. “The way they operate things is way different than how things are operated here [at the Kellers’ dairy] – it’s a step up parlor versus a lever stanchion, and breeding and moving cows is all different. Even the way they milk is different,” Fick said. The thought of running for dairy princess entered Gerken’s mind early on in her dairy job. “Fred and Peggy would always bring me to the dairy princess banquet. I got to see the princesses, learn about their experiences, plus they get to wear pretty dresses,” Gerken said. It all intrigued her. One of Fick’s sister’s friends was a dairy princess and a Princess Kay of the Milky Way nalist. “After that I always wanted to have my head carved in butter,” she said. “I went to May event this year and realized it’s a hard
goal, but something I’m aiming for.” Fick is also looking forward to talking to more people about dairy. “If I’m a dairy princess, I can work with kids in the community while advocating for something I love. And I get to wear a pretty awesome crown,” she said. At this year’s Wabasha County dairy princess banquet, Fick and Gerken were crowned attendants while Melendy Miller was named the county’s princess. So far, the trio has handed out dairy samples at grocery stores, ridden in parades and given out free dairy products at customer appreciation days for local businesses. “We did a lot of things in June,” Gerken said. They’re looking forward to more princess opportunities throughout the rest of their year-long reign. “Not all dairies are the same, but their goal is the same – to produce good milk,” Gerken said about one message people need to know about the dairy industry. Fick encourages people to ask her questions to get to know more about cows and how products are made. “A lot of people jump to conclusions or jump on the wrong bandwagon even when they don’t know all the facts,” she said. “If people don’t know a dairy farmer to ask, they can go to midwestdairy.com. It’s a great reference.” This fall, Gerken will be nishing her military training in the National Guard and will attend Northeast Iowa Community College for dairy management the following fall. She would like to make a career working for the Kellers. Fick will be studying agriculture business, beef science and dairy science this fall at Northeast Iowa Community College with future hopes to become an animal nutritionist or a dairy herd manager. In the meantime, the two friends are looking forward to spending more time together as Wabasha County dairy royalty. “We get to advocate to the public, get to talk to them and get to know what they think about dairy,” Gerken said. USDA designates 10 counties in Wisconsin as Primary Natural Disaster Areas with assistance to producers in Minnesota In response to a request from Russ Raeder, Farm Service Agency’s (FSA) acting State Executive Director in Wisconsin, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has designated Brown, Calumet, Kewaunee, La Crosse, Manitowoc, Monroe, Outagamie, Ozaukee, Sheboygan and Washington counties in Wisconsin as primary natural disaster areas due to losses and damages caused by winterkill including freeze that occurred from Jan. 1, 2017, through May 26, 2017. Farmers and ranchers in the following counties in Wisconsin also qualify for natural disaster assistance because their counties are contiguous. Those counties are: Dodge, Milwaukee, Vernon, Door, Oconto, Waukesha, Fond du Lac, Shawano, Waupaca, Jackson, Trempealeau, Winnebago, Juneau Farmers and ranchers in Houston and Winona counties in Minnesota also qualify for natural disaster assistance because their counties are contiguous. All counties listed above were designated natural disaster areas on June 28, 2017, making all qualied farm operators in the designated areas eligible for FSA’s emergency (EM) loans, provided eligibility requirements are met. Farmers in eligible counties have eight months from the date of the declaration to apply for loans to help cover part of their actual losses. FSA will consider each loan application on its own merits, taking into account the extent of losses, security available and repayment ability. FSA has a variety of programs, in addition to the EM loan program, to help eligible farmers recover from adversity. Other FSA programs that can provide assistance, but do not require a disaster declaration, include Operating and Farm Ownership Loans; the Emergency Conservation Program; Livestock Forage Disaster Program; Livestock Indemnity Program; Emergency Assistance for Livestock, Honeybees and Farm-Raised Fish Program; and the Tree Assistance Program. Interested farmers may contact their local USDA service centers for further information on eligibility requirements and application procedures for these and other programs. Wisconsin FFA Foundation awards chapter grants The Wisconsin FFA Foundation has announced the winners of the 2017 chapter grants, which encourage Wisconsin FFA chapters to develop individual and cooperative activities that will enhance their communities. Granton FFA is the recipient of the $500 Community Service grant, new this year and available due to generous donations to the Bethany L. Rieth Memorial Fund. This fund was established in the Past State FFA Ofcer’s honor after her sudden passing in February 2016. The Granton FFA Chapter will use these funds to provide meals to cancer patients at Hope Lodge in Marsheld, expanding on a community service project it already has in place. “My hope for FFA members is to learn compassion,” says Advisor Katie Chapman in the grant application. “It is very inspiring to see a student offer to carry a sick person’s plate back to their table.” Two chapters, Ashland FFA and Waupun FFA, are this year’s recipients of the Food for America grant, once again funded by the Wisconsin FFA Foundation’s long-time Two-Star Mission Partner, Organic Valley/CROPP Cooperative, Inc. Ashland FFA will continue to teach area students and community members about the food production cycle through its small animal exhibit. The $500 in grant funds will be used to improve the project’s fencing, as it continues to grow in size and impact through community partnerships. LeŌ, Tanner Rohner, was named Senior Champion with his Holstein cow at the Crow Wing County Dairy Days, June 29, in Brainerd, Minn. Right, Ellen Harth was Junior Champion with her Jersey heifer. The Wisconsin FFA Foundation and Syngenta also have partnered for a second year to provide resources for produce gardens to six Wisconsin FFA Chapters. Three of these 2017 Grow More Communities grant winners, Antigo, Randolph Cambria-Friesland and Waupun FFA chapters, are returning gardens, while Milton FFA and Shullsburg FFA were newly selected to begin their garden project. Startup gardens are given $500 to begin the project and $500 at the end of the season. Existing gardens are awarded $500 also when the garden is completed Milton FFA Advisor Stacy Skemp says the chapter will use the garden to help spread the message of agriculture through the Milton Community Library programs, as well as provide fresh produce to the Milton Food Pantry. “The food pantry has a hard time fullling all of the families’ needs on a regular basis,” she adds, noting that other garden produce will be given to the local FFA Alumni for use with their Thanksgiving baskets and also used in the school cafeteria. “We’re so grateful to our chapter grant sponsors who support agriculture education in this way,” says John Hromyak, Wisconsin FFA Foundation executive director. “The practical and meaningful outcomes that these grants produce will benet many and help to improve our communities.” Results from Crow Wing County Dairy Days 2017 Dairy Days was June 29 at the Crow Wing County Fairgrounds in Brainerd, Minn. There were 34 exhibitors and 46 head of cattle. The judge was Neal Grotsun from Cold Spring. Ellen Harth, Hinckley, won Junior Champion with a Jersey summer yearling and Autum Petterson, Fergus Falls, won Reserve Champion with her Holstein fall yearling. Receiving Senior Champion was Tanner Rohner, Pennock, with a Holstein 4 Year Old Cow and Ryan Talberg, Freeport, won Reserve Champion with his Holstein 3 year old Cow. Junior Showmanship went to Kaitlyn Byker, Foreston, and Joseph Caughey, Brainerd got 2nd place. Jenna Caughey, Brainerd, won Intermediate Showmanship and Andrew Caughey, Brainerd, received 2nd place. Senior Showmanship went to Tanner Rohner, Pennock, and Ellen Harth, Hinckley, got 2nd. Keep up with dry cow care By Emily Wilmes, University of Minnesota Extension Summer is a busy time for farmers. Thereís a lot to be done, and some tasks tend to take priority over others, but itís critical for dairy farmers to keep up with dry cow care. Dry cows are an important part of the dairy production puzzle, and itís crucial that they are not overlooked. What happens to a cow during her dry period will inuence how she performs as a member of the lactating herd. Letís review a few key components of dry cow care that shouldnít go overlooked. First, and one of the most important, is nutrition. Dry cow rations may not demand the same quality and precision as those for lactating cows, but they are still an integral part of a transition cow management program. The nutrition a dry cow receives can also prevent problems like hypocalcemia, milk fever, ketosis, and acidosis. Here are some components of a good dry cow ration to keep in mind: • Inclusion of trace minerals such as cobalt, copper, iodine, iron, manganese, selenium, and zinc • Feeding anionic salts to maintain a negative dietary cation-anion difference (DCAD) • Feeding low levels of potassium to prevent hypocalcemia and milk fever • Feeding niacin to help reduce blood ketone levels • Access to plenty of clean, fresh water Along with nutrition, we also want to think about milk quality and mastitis in our dry cows. Why is this important? 50-60 percent of all new infections caused by environmental pathogens occur during the dry period, and over 50 percent of clinical coliform mastitis events in the rst 100 days in milk originated during the dry period. Some easy ways to prevent dry cows from calving in with mastitis are treating with a dry cow mastitis tube, maintaining a clean environment, and vaccinating to maximize immune defenses. Lastly, consider how you cool your dry cows on hot summer days. Research trials conducted on cooling cows during the dry period have all shown an improvement in milk production the subsequent calving, ranging from a couple of pounds per day up to 11 pounds per day. Cows that are cooled for the entire dry period performed better than those that were cooled for only a part of the dry period. Consider shade, fans, and even sprinklers where your dry cows are housed, as the prot from higher milk production can help offset costs. There are many things happening on your farm, but donít forget about your dry cows! Nutrition, mastitis management, and heat abatement are just some of the aspects of dry cow management to keep in mind.
