GREENWALD, Minn. – When Jeff Meyer and Bob Welle plow their elds, plowing straight and covering every inch of stubble is not their main focus. But when they plow competitively, it is a priority. “It’s denitely not the way we plow at home,” Welle said. Welle and Meyer are putting their plowing skills to the test during this year’s Minnesota State Plowing Contest on Aug. 11, which will be held in conjunction with the National Plowing Matches on Aug. 12 and 13 at Bennie Niedfelt’s farm near Greenwald, Minn. Welle milks 65 cows and Meyer milks 37 cows near Spring Hill, Minn. Meyer has three moldboard plows for competition – a two-bottom, a three-bottom and a reversible. “Bob uses my three-bottom, and I use my two-bottom,” Meyer said. They are not just any plow. “They’re set up for competition,” Meyer said. “People can use their plows from home, but it’s hard to compete against these.” To make plows competition ready, jointers are mounted on the rolling coulters. “It covers the stubble more as the coulters slice through the ground ahead of the moldboard,” Meyer said.

Another pull type plow normally used at national and world contests is the Kverneland plow. “They’re really hard to compete against,” Meyer said. “It’s a special moldboard plow that twists and turns
the ground differently.” No matter which plow is used, Meyer said contestants use smaller tractors with narrow tires. “The plow is small,” he said. “If the tire is too wide, it will crush the previTurn to PLOWING | Page 6

The Normans eventually had to sell their cows and let go of their nine employees. “It was traumatic for our family,â€? Norman said. “We don’t know what the future holds.â€? That’s why he’s happy to see others starting to talk about the issue and have meetings about stray voltage. Master electricians Larry Neubauer and Bill Schmidt have been testing cows
on dairies in the Midwest since 2006. They said the most common ways for the current to enter the cow is through water at the muzzle and through the hooves on wet concrete. Their on-farm testing is set up to create a circuit for the electric current. It starts with a chute with a metal plate on the ground. Once a cow is standing in the chute, Neubauer and Schmidt hook a metal nose clip with a return wire to her nose. A power source sends out an electric current through an 1,000 Ohm resistor and out to the cow standing on the metal plates. The current travels through the cow, out her nose by the
metal clip and through the return wire back to the electric reader, from which they are able to determine the voltage. Using Ohm’s law, they are then able to calculate the resistance of each cow. “It’s about a half to one second of current (.19 milliamp) through the cow,� Schmidt said. “We’re not putting much through the cows.� They said during their time testing cows, they have never found a cow with a resistance of 500 Ohms, as suggested by Minnesota Stray Voltage Guide; however, they said these cows are still feeling the negative effects. Neubauer and Schmidt said they know farmers’ cows are being affected

by stray voltage. “These animals are suffering. It’s like they have the ďƒ&#x;u every day,â€? Schmidt said. “I have farmers come to me with tears in their eyes.â€? At the end of the workshop, people were able to ask questions of the speakers or Minnesota Milk Producers Association representatives Bob Lefebvre and Lucas Sjostrom. Many legislators stood up to say they want to hear from farmers and are willing to listen to how they can help. Lefebvre said MMPA wants to help lower the 500-Ohm resistance value stated in the Minnesota Stray Voltage Guide.

Forage potassium levels exceeding 3 percent can lead to milk fever and other anion imbalances – particularly for early-lactation cows. To prevent this, UW-Extension recommends several management techniques. First, annual soil tests are important to prevent excessive potassium application. Additionally, cutting alfalfa as low as possible helps dilute potassium levels, as potassium tends to concentrate in the upper stem of the plant. Finally, all forages contain similar amounts of potassium, so adding grasses and other forages will not have an effect on potassium content in alfalfa. Following Halopka, Jensen discussed cropscouting techniques before taking farmers into the eld to test their knowledge rsthand. Jensen noted that, while the leafhopper season has just begun, insect problems have been relatively low for this year’s growing season. “We’ve had a cooler, rainier year so far,” Jensen said. “Usually that would mean it’s a slug year, but so far, that hasn’t been the case either.” Jensen said the secret to controlling leafhoppers is simple: sweep nets. He said using a sweep net could help to make a more accurate, appropriate insecticide application. “Insect problems will vary from year to year. Using an insect sweep net can help better schedule an insecticide application than without it,” Jensen said. The rst step to taking a good sweep is knowing when it is the best time to sweep. A common mistake farmers make is sweeping immediately after a cutting. “For one to two days after cutting, it’s an insect desert out there,” Jensen said. “You don’t know for sure if it is coming back. It’s best to take a sweep on an established stand – when regrowth has reached 2

inches.” Sweep nets are all the same size: 15 inches in diameter. When sweeping a eld, farmers should give 20 gentle sweeps from the left to the right while walking in the eld. The same process should be repeated in ve different areas of the eld to get an accurate reading. Adult leafhoppers will fall to the back of the net, while young nymphs will rest on the rim. Once the sweeps are complete, it is important to know the threshold of leafhoppers for alfalfa at its given stage. At 3 inches tall, sweeps should average .2 leafhoppers per sweep; at six inches, the average should be .5 leafhoppers per sweep; for 12 inches, the average should be two leafhoppers per sweep. Anything above these thresholds is a call for control. “The key is to sweep early and to sweep often; when you notice new growth or regrowth beginning to emerge, sweep and continue to sweep throughout the growing period,” Jensen said. Making the decision to spray upon determining your leafhopper presence comes down to a number of factors. New seedings are most susceptible to damage by leafhoppers, and damage in the rst year can reduce yield for the duration of its life. Taller plants are more tolerable of leafhoppers, so spraying may be unnecessary. Finally, understand the leafhopper resistance level of your alfalfa variety; for varieties with greater than 50 percent resistance, leafhopper population is already inhibited. While keeping all of this information in mind, Jensen suggests farmers attempt to sweep elds once a week when able. While he understands it can be a tedious chore, it can result in high quality, high yielding alfalfa that is produced with the appropriate amounts of insecticide. “A simple sweep net can take a lot of the guesswork out of insecticide application,” Jensen said. “Once you get comfortable, it makes it easy to make decisions quickly.”

‘Call It Breakfast’ malts and sundaes join state fair new foods Call It Breakfast – made with Minnesota dairy farmers’ secret, State Fair-recipe vanilla ice cream or malt, topped with sprinkles, chocolate and latte-avored syrup, and chunks of bakery-fresh doughnuts – will join the traditional ice cream avors at the Dairy Goodness Bar at the Minnesota State Fair this year. The avor, picked through a public poll in May, outdistanced That’s My Jam!, made with oyster crackers and sweet pepper jam, and Scotch Hopper Crunch, featuring chocolate sauce, butterscotch chips and shoestring potatoes, to earn its spot on the menu. The new item appears among seven new frozen treats being introduced at the Fair and featured on its new foods list released to the public June 21. “We’re excited to shake things up a bit again this year,” said Jodi Jetson, Midwest Dairy’s Minnesota State Fair project manager. “In addition to continuing to serve favorites like chocolate, vanilla, applecaramel, rhubarb-strawberry and more, we love to introduce other avors that also get fairgoers excited about what dairy farmers have to offer.” During late May, the public chose from the three avors by visiting MidwestDairy.com. Like its predecessor, Salted Caramel Puff, Call It Breakfast will be served at the Dairy Goodness Bar for only one year. Fair-goers are encouraged to suggest new tastes for a poll to choose a different featured avor again in 2017. The Dairy Goodness Bar, located in the Dairy Building, is one of the State Fair’s most popular concessions and is owned by the state’s dairy farm families and operated by Midwest Dairy Association. Young co-op members tour cheese plant, AMPI member farms The Young Cooperator (YC) members of Associated Milk Producers Inc. (AMPI), a leading Midwest dairy cooperative, toured the cooperative’s consumer-packaged cheese plant, ABS Global Inc. and AMPI member farms in Wisconsin on June 20-21. This annual event providing cooperative education to members age 40 and under attracted 25 families from a multi-state region, totaling just under 100 attendees. Day one was highlighted by a tour of the co-op’s consumer-packaged cheese plant in Portage, Wis. The plant specializes in packaging natural shredded cheese and processed cheese slices and loaves to be enjoyed in restaurants and kitchens across the country. YCs enjoyed seeing the process of producing roughly 1.2 million pounds of nished product daily to meet the growing demand of foodservice customers. AMPI produces 10 percent of the nation’s sliced American cheese each year. A tour of ABS Global Inc. in DeForest, Wis., an articial insemination collection and processing facility, took place on day two. The guided tour included the company’s lab, and the bull collection and rearing facilities. Through presentations by ABS staff, YCs learned about genomics and improving dairy cattle economics through breeding. Tours featuring two Wisconsin AMPI member farms were also available to attendees. Rambling Contours Farm is owned and operated by Dan and Karen Anderson, Holmen, Wis. This 250cow dairy features a double-8 parallel parlor and freestall housing. The Andersons shared about day-to-day processes on the farm, along with how the farm has grown and evolved throughout the years. Pine Knoll Farms, located near Galesville, Wis., is owned and operated by Bob and Shelly Hart.
