Hesse continues farming at 80 years old
Betty was born into farming, having grown up on a dairy farm in Waconia, Minn. On her family’s farm, Betty took care of all the calves and the chickens. However, when she met Roman, her late husband of 13 years, Betty’s life changed completely. “Roman was the one who broke me into milking,� Betty said. “I never milked before that.� Betty enjoyed farming with Roman. The couple was married for 48 years, living in the same house as Roman’s family 4 miles down the road from where Betty grew up. Roman’s father was legally blind and his mother could not drive so Betty spent time caring for them and learning to cook dinners. “Our only time spent alone together was out in the barn,� Betty said. “I also learned that at the Hesse farm there is no time wasted. You get the job done without stopping.� Together, Betty and Roman made many memories on the dairy. “One time, Roman and I

COLOGNE, Minn. – At 4 a.m., Betty Hesse’s feet hit the ďƒ&#x;oor. Before the sun comes up over the horizon, she goes to the calf barn to feed and check on the calves. Then, she proceeds to go in the barn and get the milking equipment ready as her sons, Donald and Mark, wake up. Betty lives and works on her family’s dairy farm, SouthView Dairy, with her sons near Cologne, Minn. Together, they milk 142 cows. “My mother is the human alarm clock,â€? Donald said. “When I was younger, I used to try and wake up before Mom did, but every single time I would wake up 10 minutes before milking, she would already be outside.â€? At 80 years of age, Betty helps with both morning and night milking. She also has a job off the farm where she cleans houses for the regions

When Hesse is not farming, she enjoys gardening. were baling hay and had this big party to go to, so we were in a hurry,” Betty said. “We drove on this big hill and something went wrong, so my husband yelled, ‘Ho,’ and just as he did that I jerked the tractor a little hard and lost the wagon. We had this big party to go to, so I got that wagon back on real quick.” There was also the time after the Hesses installed indoor plumbing. “Indoor plumbing was very nice, but we had something go wrong, so I was sent to the basement with specic instructions to turn the handle the correct way,” Betty said. “I found the handle and turned it off, but then I second guessed myself and turned it the other way. Next thing I knew, water was everywhere.” Betty’s favorite cow was Billy who had the number 331 on her ear tag. Billy was a gentle and phenomenal lead cow, said Betty. “My daughter still has her ear tag

In her free time, Betty enjoys cleaning homes for up to three hours after morning chores, gardening in her large ower garden, doing crossword puzzles, baking, cooking, going out with friends for lunch, playing sheep head with a card club, traveling with girlfriends, and spending time with her nine grandchildren and 14 greatgrandchildren. “She also enjoys shopping,” Donald said. “Betty is on a rst name basis at Mills Fleet Farm.” In Betty’s 60 years of milking cows, she has seen how dairy farming has improved. “We used to have milk cans which
would have to be strained in the barn and carried to the cooler,” Betty said. “They were very heavy.” The Hesses slowly progressed to using a bulk tank and step saver, and then pipeline. Now, the family uses a 10-cow swing parlor and automatic takeoffs. “My feet took a large beating in the tiestall barn,” Betty said. “Once down in the pit, I don’t get kicked as easily, so it’s safer.” Donald and Mark purchased the dairy in 1995 with plans to improve. In 2003, they doubled the cow numbers to 100 and started construction on the parlor. “I was always told that parlors were safe which is why we implemented them,” Donald said. “Now, I am the one telling all my friends about how great they are.” Today, the cows are housed in two freestall barns where they have the ability to eat, drink and lay comfortably in sand bedded stalls. Betty has seen the good and bad in her dairy farming career. There was a time when three families depended on the farm and dairy prices were not very good, said Betty. “We had to work longer hours and do extra work, such as custom combining or snow removal,” she said. “But, farming was fun too. We had our fun times.” Through her own experiences, Betty encourages young dairy farmers to remain positive and understand the hard work it takes being a farmer. “I want them to make sure it’s what they want. With the dairy market the way it is, it’s a necessity to have willing help from a parent or couple, because without that it’s hard to make it,” Betty said. “They also need to be ready 24/7, have a positive attitude and, most importantly, must want to be on the farm.” When Betty thinks of her time spent milking cows, she has enjoyed every single minute of it and hopes to continue being in the barn at 4 a.m. for many years to come. “There are still days when all three of us can be found in the barn at the same time,” Betty said. “You will know because there is usually lots of laughter.”

24th Northeast Wisconsin High Protein Show results The 24th annual Northeast Wisconsin High Protein Show was held in Seymour, Wis. on June 14-15. With cool wet weather the cattle came from near and far to compete for honors in this all protein breeds show. 177 animals were exhibited at the show. The show started on Friday night with Anne Zernicke and Hailey Kuester, Green Bay, Wis., serving as the ofcial judges for the youth showmanship contest. Four youth showed in the Pee-Wee class and 43 older youths competed in 4 other divisions. In the Advanced Division Mikayla Knorn was rst, in the Senior Division Tommy Diemel was rst, the Intermediate Division was won by Gracie Ziegler and in the Junior Division Katelyn Henschel received the top prize. The Supreme Champion show person receives the Joann Marquart Memorial Award which was won by Mikayla Knorn. On Saturday morning, the heifer and cow show continued with Tom Agnew, Oconomowoc, Wisconsin as the ofcial judge. Judge Agnew expertly placed the ve High Protein breeds of Ayrshire, Brown Swiss, Guernsey, Jersey and Milking Shorthorn entries. The Grand Champion Ayrshire was Forest-Park Midas Sashay exhibited by Steve & Sara Schneider of Pulaski. The Grand Champion Brown Swiss was R-Plain Richard Legand exhibited by Jon and Alexis Retzlaff of Shawano. Crow Wing County hosts Dairy Days Cattle Show Dairy Days was June 27 at the Crow Wing County Fairgrounds in Brainerd, Minn. There were 34 exhibitors and 50 head of cattle. The judge was Jenni Skiba from North Branch, Minn. Ellen Harth, Hinckley, Minn., won Junior Champion with a Jersey winter yearling and Ashton Engelke, New London, Minn., won Reserve Champion with her Holstein spring yearling. Receiving Senior Champion was Mataya Czech, Royalton, Minn., with her Holstein 3-year-old cow and Leah Mohs, Rice, Minn., won Reserve Champion with her Holstein 3-year-old cow. Junior Showmanship went to Kaitlyn Byker, Foreston, Minn., and Tripp Meyer, Rothsay, Minn, got second place. Elli Meyer, Rothsay, Minn., won Intermediate Showmanship and Lilly Hoeft, Milaca, Minn., received second place. Senior Showmanship went to Ellen Harth, Hinckley, and Leah Mohs, Rice, got second. Lloyd Metzger receives national teaching award Lloyd Metzger, South Dakota State University Alfred Chair and Professor of Dairy and Food Science received the International Dairy Food Association Award for Teaching in Dairy Manufacturing on June 24, 2019 at the national meeting of the American Dairy Science Association in Cincinnati, Ohio. This award recognizes excellence in teaching and draws nominations from around the world. “Metzger’s vibrant research coupled with his practical experience makes him a dynamic and effective instructor, providing students with a unique learning experience,” said Vikram Mistry, department head of Dairy and Food Science, “His teaching approaches prepare students for successful careers in the dairy processing industry.” Metzger received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in dairy manufacturing from South Dakota State University and a Ph.D. in food science from Cornell University. Following positions as a research scientist at General Mills and a faculty member at the University of Minnesota, he returned to SDSU as a faculty member in the Dairy and Food Science Department and holder of the Alfred Chair in Dairy Education in 2007. He received promotion to professor in 2012. Metzger teaches or co-teaches several undergraduate courses including Dairy Product Processing I, Dairy Products Judging, Advanced Dairy Products Judging, Dairy Product and Process Development, and Laboratory Techniques in Dairy Science. As coach of the SDSU Dairy Products Judging Team, he has guided his students to seven national championships since 2011. Metzger also has a prolic research program in dairy manufacturing through which he mentors graduate students. He is director of the Midwest Dairy Foods Research Center, which sponsors dairy research through check-off funds from dairy farmers at SDSU, The University of Minnesota and Iowa State University.

An everlasting love for dairy By Kate Rechtzigel Staff Intern
KENYON, Minn. – With Krista Quam’s love for taming cows and heifers long before showing in 4-H and her unbreakable connection with her show cow, Sakura, it came as no surprise when Krista took over her family’s dairy farm. Krista milks 60 cows with help from her sisters, Kayla and Kira, grandpa, Gary, and parents, Grant and Joan, on the family’s farm near Kenyon, Minn. Krista began milking cows at the farm site in September 2015. “My grandpa was a dairy farmer and my dad has hauled milk for many years, so as a little girl I got to see many different dairy set-ups and know which ones I liked,” Krista said. In the early 1980s, the Quam family renovated their dairy barn with hopes

that Grant and Joan would take over the hobby farm from Gary’s brother in 1989. But with the high feed costs, low milk prices, and off-farm jobs, they could not keep up with the workload of also operating a dairy. Instead, Krista now uses the facilities. They include the 38-cow tiestall, which had 14 stalls added in the addition, and 5 AIC expresso milking units. The 28-year-old always had an interest in dairy cattle, far before she was milking her own herd. “Growing up, we always had youngstock, so I was still able to participate in 4-H,” Krista said. In 2003, Krista started showing in 4-H where she was able to put her taming skills into practice. “I picked out all of my own cows,” Krista said. “Though, at the time I had just picked out the friendly ones to take to the fair. I didn’t really understand the whole judging concept.” Krista’s family sold their cows in 2008, but she still wanted to participate in 4-H. Soon after, Krista was sent to pick out a heifer calf at her grandpa’s farm site where they kept youngstock. “I picked out this friendly cow

ConƟnued from QUAM | Page 7 named Sakura,” Krista said. “We weren’t supposed to keep her after the fair, but I had won a state fair trip with her, and then in 2009 she freshened, so I was able to convince my parents to let me keep her.” Krista milked Sakura in the barn for a month both before and after school until she graduated high school in 2009. “Sakura was the black beauty of cows,” Kayla said. Joan agreed. “Except she was actually white,” she said. While attending college at Dakota County Technical College in Rosemount, Minn., Krista worked for a neighbor, milking 110 cows in their double-8 herringbone parlor. Then, in August 2013, Krista took on another
milking job 20 miles away. There, she milked 170 cows in a swing-10 parlor. Krista was keeping busy on the dairy farms when yet another opportunity arose. In 2014, an opening at Maple Island, a local food processing company, was available, so Krista retained her work at the neighboring farm and left her second milking job. Krista was then able to work four 10-hour shifts and two milkings each week. “I realized really quickly I didn’t want to work in a factory,” Krista said. “On top of that, I had six cows to milk that I had kept from our herd of youngstock at home both before and after the jobs, too.” One year later, Krista made a decision that launched her dairy farming ca-

reer. She left her jobs and applied for a beginning farmer loan from the United States Department of Agriculture Farm Service Agency. In June 2015, Krista purchased 46 cows. “On Sept. 5, 2015, I had all the cows in the barn along with three heifers that were 6 months old,” Krista said. “It was a struggle at rst, and I needed a lot of help, but everyone pitched in to do their part.” In time, family members fell into their roles on the farm. “My family just saw how big cows affected my heart, and they pitched in to help me out which is really special,” Krista said. Krista’s grandpa does all the tractor work and mixes feed. Her mom does all
the nances and goes to hay auctions, while her dad hauls hay, orders feed and decides what goes into the ration. Krista’s sisters are involved, too. Kira takes care of the calf chores, and Kayla helps when she can amidst her job off the farm. “Without my family, I wouldn’t be where I am today,” Krista said. With family, Krista has been able to continue her love for the dairy industry. She plans to keep milking cows with their help and hopefully expand to either a parlor and freestall barn, or robots one day. “It’s challenging at times, but it doesn’t feel like work,” Krista said. “It feels real, and it’s unlike any other job that I could have had.”
