Heat abatement is achievable with all barn designs

MADISON, Wis. – The rising temperatures and humidity are welcomed in the elds, but their effects in the dairy barn can be detrimental. Dr. Nigel Cook and Dr. Jennifer Van Os, professors at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, provided guidelines for dairy farmers to consider when addressing heat abatement on their farms during a Professional Dairy Producers of Wisconsin The Dairy Signal episode July 9. “Heat abatement is not about enhancing welfare,” Van Os said. “It’s a baseline expectation. We will also suffer economically and see the downstream effects in lameness.” Lactating animals visibly show the effects of heat stress when the temperature humidity index reaches 68 with a noticeable drop in milk production. Research is showing calves are impacted at a THI of 65, said Van Os. “When we see a drop in production, there’s already a lag,” she said. “We want to intervene before those problems arise.” At a THI of 68 and a relative humidity of 20%, the temperature is 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Likewise, that same THI with 90% humidity gives a temperature of 69 degrees Fahrenheit. “Humans are comfortable at 70 degrees,” Cook said. “We’re not worried about heat stress as we’re wandering around the farm at that temperature, but the cows are already seeing the effects. Really, we’re seeing behavioral effects way below 70 degrees, and that’s why we need to automate these systems and have them ever more sophisticated.” It is important to note that while the outdoor THI can be readily known, it is the THI inside the barn that creates a direct impact on the cows.
To begin addressing heat stress, both Van Os and Cook said it is simple. Start with shade availability and airow to the cows while they are lying down. “Heat abatement is not one-sizets-all, but we need to emphasize that shade is not optional,” Van Os said. “It’s the baseline starting point.” For cattle in barns, Cook encourages farmers to spend time in the microenvironment the cows are in. “I’m going to ask everyone to go back to their barns and climb in a stall below a fan,” he said. “Do you feel fast moving air against your face as you hold your head Dr. Nigel Cook 2 to 3 feet above UW-Madison the stall, where the cows would be? If you don’t feel air, you’re failing to provide adequate airow.” Another easy indicator of heat stress is when cows are panting, their tongues are out and possibly drooling. Yet, by the time these signs are noticed, the cows are already under severe heat stress. An early gauge is an elevated respiration rate. “Look at a sample of cows and see if they are breathing at a faster rate,” Van Os said. Setting the clock on production Daily, seasonal patterns inuence volume, components By Stacey Smart

Two factors often overlooked when assessing milk yield, butterfat and protein are season and time of day. Both clock and calendar are linked to production, as daylight and darkness can have profound impacts on activity level and performance. “By considering seasonal and daily patterns, a dairy producer can provide additional avenues to optimize milk production and protability,” said Kevin Harvatine, Ph.D., professor of nutritional physiology at Penn State University. “It’s important to have these factors in mind when setting production goals. We should have different expectations for milk fat on July 1 than we do on Jan. 1.” In Harvatine’s presentation, “How Daily and Seasonal Rhythms Impact Cows,” during the 2020 Four-State Dairy Nutrition and Management Virtual Conference June 10, he explored the effects of time of day and time of year on milk production while taking into account feeding, milking and lighting schedules. The patterns he discussed are not related to temperature and do not correlate to the effects of heat stress. Rather, there is a seasonal pattern of milk composition and yield driven by changes across the year, which are mostly dictated by the lengthening and shortening of days. In addition, there is a daily pattern of milk synthesis and a daily intake pattern that
impacts the rumen. Circadian rhythms follow a 24-hour cycle, whereas seasonal rhythms abide by a 12-month cycle. A cow’s circadian rhythm is the driver of her daily schedule. This built-in clock tells her when it is time to eat, rest, ruminate, make milk and when it is time to be milked. Disruptions to this repeating cycle can affect a cow’s ability to reach her full production potential, impacting milk yield, fat and protein. “The master clock in the brain that keeps track of time and day is highly controlled by environmental cues such as light and dark,” Harvatine said. “Feeding times are another cue that controls the peripheral clock. Also, milking time is an important physiological activity in the daily life of a cow, and I would argue it’s a strong signal for setting peripheral clocks in the mammary gland.” Research conducted from the late 1970s through the early 2000s comparing constant 16 to 18 hours of light versus 8 to 10 hours of light showed a 5%-10% increase in milk yield but no change in milk composition under longer lighting conditions. “Managing the photoperiod is probably our best chance for improving production,” Harvatine said. “Constant long days can provide good results, but we have to be really careful about ensuring a dark period to get the desired response. Cows need both light and dark periods.” Short days in the dry period can stimulate mammary development and provide additional milk yield in the next lactation. This benet is eliminated by constant light, however, which causes disruption of normal rhythms. “Cows need a dark cycle,” Harvatine said. “This is probably the biggest chal-

For example, if a cow can anticipate new feed is coming in an hour, she can change her metabolism and get digestive enzymes ready, giving her body an advantage when that feed arrives. “When you bring fresh feed, cows come up and eat,” Harvatine said. “Pushing up feed helps if food is out of reach, but it’s not the stimulus that fresh feed is. Feed delivery is the biggest thing we have. It’s a strong signal for eating, which can be used to increase intake during low intake periods of the day.” Harvatine said to make sure feed is available when cows return from the parlor. However, feed delivery two to three hours before or after milking may help spread out intake across the day. “I like to see feeding take place before cows go to the parlor and again at noon because that is when we see a dropoff in intake,” he said. “Also, don’t be afraid to feed multiple diets per day. You could feed the same ration to the entire herd rst thing in the morning to help get feed out to pens fast and then return later with a top-off diet for high groups. You don’t have to feed the same diet across
the day because cows are not eating at the same rate throughout the day.” Harvatine warned of slug eating at night and the dangers of feeding late in the evening. “Night feeding scares me,” he said. “If you want more intake, it’s better to feed in the early morning hours.” Harvatine cited a real-life example from a large farm in which one pen of cows was consistently lower in milk fat than a peer pen fed the same diet in another barn. Cows in the lower-producing pen were being fed around 11:30 a.m. When the farm switched the milking and feeding order so feed was delivered earlier prior to milking, milk fat increased equal to the peer pen. Farmers have options for improving production that fall outside of nutrition. “We need to manage the daily pattern of intake, and our best tools for this are through feeding and milking schedules,” Harvatine said. “When milk prices are low, it’s hard to add things to the diet. But addressing daily and seasonal patterns are not things you have to buy. Instead, we can change how we’re managing our feeding and daily activities on the farm to achieve better results.”

Minnesota’s state show set for July 20-24 in South Dakota

BROOKINGS, S.D. – By living in northern Minnesota, Ryan Grifn and his family rely on dairy cattle shows to market their herd’s genetics throughout the dairy industry. “Unlike places like Rochester or St. Cloud, (Minnesota), our dairy market is so remote,” Grifn said. “We don’t have neighbors who can just swing in to look through the barn, so the only way people see our cattle is through social media and shows.” Grifn and his family run Kara-Kesh Holsteins, a dairy farm in Marshall County near Thief River Falls, Minnesota. The Grifns plan to attend the Minnesota Holstein Association State Show slated for July 20-24 at the Swiftel Center in Brookings. “We haven’t always attended the state show in the past because it typically coincides with planting and calving,” Grifn said. “But with everything that’s happened (in the industry) up to this point this year, it’s crucial we make a point to
attend.” The state show was originally scheduled for the end of June in Arlington, Minnesota, but was postponed due to regulations set in place because of the new coronavirus pandemic. Once the Minnesota State Fair was canceled, the association’s state show committee worked to develop a plan that would allow exhibitors and breeders to safely participate in a dairy cattle show. The group rst reconsidered the Minnesota location at a later date, but decided it would not be feasible with current and potential future guidelines put forth by the government. “We were really afraid that the show could be shut down if we hosted it in Minnesota,” Tracy Schaefer said. “About ve years ago, the association merged with South Dakota’s association, and we thought now would be a good time to branch out across the border.” Schaefer, of Fairfax, Minnesota, is the association’s president and a committee member for the state show. He has been a part of the annual show – attending, exhibiting and planning – for nearly 30

years. In a mere 40 days after postponing the state show, it was rescheduled with new dates and location. The dairy show will follow two beef shows hosted at the event center in South Dakota. “It really all fell into place,” Schaefer said. “The show came up fast because those are the dates that worked. We wanted to stay away from dates that coincided with
neighboring fairs or other events.” This year, the state show will also encompass four dairy cattle shows, including the state Red and White show, Midwest Jersey Jamboree, junior Holstein show and state Holstein show. For some exhibitors, multiple breed shows will be benecial. “Having these breed shows in the same location and in the same week is huge,”

not limiting participation to Minnesota and South Dakota. The committee has received interest from exhibitors in Wisconsin and Iowa, and is planning for participation from up to ďƒžve states. “Because of the situation and us being able to have a show, we wanted to be inclusive and welcome anybody,â€? Schaefer said. Grifďƒžn plans to bring about eight head to the show – four heifers and at least two cows.

In a normal year, his family would attend a handful of shows throughout the year, including the regional youth show, county fair, district show, state fair and World Dairy Expo. “We don’t show because it’s all fun. We love doing it, but we do it because it is a part of our business model,â€? Grifďƒžn said. “We’re making breeding decisions today for success in the next two to six years. Being able to show that is essential.â€? The show will also provide the dairy community with much needed company. “We’re really looking forward to seeing our cattle friends, safely, of
course,â€? Grifďƒžn said. “It will be really nice to see people, more so than usual.â€? Meister agreed. “It will be so nice to see friends across the state who we don’t see ever without these events,â€? she said. “Our daughter and two kids we lease to are also coming with, and they’re really excited. They work so hard to get their animals ready and now they can have a sense of pride in what they’ve done.â€? To keep people’s health and safety top of mind, the show will require everyone to sign a COVID-19 liability form, social distancing will be encouraged and spectators limited. The facilities should also provide ample space so attendees will not be forced into close contact, said Schaefer. A collection of choices for dairy show enthusiasts, especially youth, exists in Iowa for 2020 despite cancellations due to the new coronavirus. As in other states, many county fairs are canceled, and the Iowa State Fair will not take place. However, there are still opportunities to show cattle. When the Iowa State Fair board decided to postpone the fair until 2021, it gave its staff direction to implement a 4-H and FFA livestock competition. Consequently, 4-H and FFA dairy cattle and dairy goats are part of three weekends of youth livestock shows beginning Aug. 6 in Des Moines. Dairy cattle will show Aug. 7-8 at the Iowa State Fair Special Edition 4-H and FFA Livestock Show. Dairy goats will show Aug. 21. “It won’t be your typical fair environment,” said Jen Cannon, Iowa State Fair competition events director. “But we’re excited to do it. We’re hoping to provide an opportunity to the youth who have worked so hard.”

Cannon said a limited number of food and show supply vendors will be in place and camping will be allowed, but exhibitors will not be allowed to stay overnight in barns nor will the Youth Inn be open. A system for 24hour access to livestock will be in place instead. Special ribbons and rosettes will be offered as well as premiums similar to past years. But Cannon said no showmanship competition will take place, primarily because of the limited time each species has for its shows. In order to limit the crowd, Cannon said each exhibitor will receive three wristbands to enter the event the weekend of their show. Up to 4,000 supporters will be allowed to attend through the purchase of a pair of wristbands for $100, good for all three livestock weekends. Scott and Delaware Counties are offering shows adjacent to their traditional fair dates. In Manchester, the Iowa Holstein Association District 8 normally holds its show in conjunction with the Delaware County Fair. In its place this year is the newly created Delco Classic. “When the fair was canceled, that kind of left the district show in a pickle,” said Jeannie Domeyer, manager of the Delaware County Fair. ConƟnued from SHOWS | Page 8 decided to go forward with its event, Iowa’s Brown Swiss breeders decided to schedule their state show in concert with the Holstein show. “Once we knew that, we proactively reached out to other breeds who typically have a state show at the state fair,” Domeyer said. As a result, Delaware County will host this year’s Milking Shorthorn, Guernsey, Ayrshire and Jersey shows during the two-day Delco Classic event. A Jeannie Domeyer youth show for all Delaware Co. Fair breeds and grade cattle will take place July 25 with the open shows July 26. “These folks need a place to get their cattle out,” Domeyer said. “They need a resume builder for their cattle. And allowing the juniors to show grade cattle will give kids who aren’t on the big show circuit a chance to exhibit.” Tara Goedken, an 18-year-old Delaware County dairy exhibitor, said she supports the county fair cancellation but will miss time spent with friends at the fair. She plans to show her cattle at the Delco Classic event. “I believe the fair board and Extension ofce staff worked very hard and did a very good job to allow the 4-H and FFA members to still show,” Goedken said. “They realized that the fair isn’t all about the entertainment and did the best to make things as normal as possible. I will be forever thankful for the opportunity.” While Delco Classic entries were due July 10, Domeyer said anyone missing the entry deadline can contact her at the fair ofce.

The Mississippi Valley Fair in Davenport, which is Scott County’s fair, is happening; however, an open and youth dairy show, not sponsored by 4-H or FFA, are scheduled before it opens. The open show for all breeds is Aug. 2; the youth heifer show is Aug. 3. “We’re happy fair leadership was able to work with Scott County health ofcials to facilitate a show despite the pandemic,” said Amy Maxwell, an organizer of a youth heifer show that usually takes place with a 4-H and FFA competition at the Mississippi Valley Fair. “Our dairy show staff has goals of making it a fun and competitive show that exhibitors look forward to returning to each year.”
As various county dairy shows across Iowa proceed during July, Katie Wolf, chairperson of the Iowa Youth Dairy Classic, will watch how they play out. The event normally draws 350 head of cattle shown by youth from multiple states, ages 9-21. This year’s event is planned for Sept. 12-13 in Manchester, but Wolf said a nal decision on whether to hold it will be made by Aug. 1. “This will give us lead time for contacting sponsors,” Wolf said. “If we go ahead, we’ll need time to process entries as well. If we have it, it’s going to be our biggest one yet, because so many shows have canceled. We think that youth work hard every day, and we’d love to give them a chance to show.”

Setting goals, chasing dreams Kearns joins parents in dairy operation By Danielle Nauman danielle.n@dairystar.com
In July 2010, Dairy Star talked to the Kearns children for the Kids Corner feature. At the time, Jason was 15 years old. We spoke with him for this issue about what he is up to on the farm 10 years later. GAYS MILLS, Wis. – Ten years ago, 15-year-old Jason Kearns was enjoying growing up on his parents’ rst-generation dairy farm in Crawford County in rural western Wisconsin. Like many other teenagers growing up on a dairy farm, he wanted to someday be a dairy farmer himself. Today Jason is married to his wife, Bailee, and together they have a son, Ryker, 1, and are expecting their second child later this month. And as he desired to do 10 years ago, Jason and Bailee are farming with Jason’s parents, Tom and Beth Kearns, on the family’s Tombeth Farms, where they milk 135 registered Holsteins and Jerseys near Gays Mills. After spending nearly three years working at Duckett Holsteins in Rudolph, Jason returned to his family’s farm in 2018. Prior to his time at the Duckett family’s farm, Jason attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison Farm and Industry Short Course for a year. “My parents really encouraged me

Jason returned to his family farm in 2018. to leave and work elsewhere for at least two years,” Jason said. “It was really important to them, and to me, to leave for a while, go somewhere else, learn and do new things.” Jason had planned to spend his time away from Tombeth Farms traveling as a professional dairy cattle tter after taking in two years of short course, but fate had different ideas for him. “At the end of my rst year in short course, I got the job offer from the Ducketts and decided to go ahead and take it,” Jason said. As his third anniversary at Duckett Holsteins neared, Jason was looking at taking a step in a new direction. “Bailee and I were planning to get married, so I wanted to think about settling down,” Jason said. “I had learned a lot from Mike and Julie (Duckett), and my sister was leaving home to go to college. It just seemed like it was the right time to come home to join my dad.”

Breeding what Jason calls nextlevel cows is something the entire Kearns family strives for, as they all enjoy the competition of the showring. One of Jason’s goals is having a breeder’s string of Holsteins to exhibit at World Dairy Expo. “We focus on type,” Jason said. “We want to breed the next show-winner. We try and stay away from negative DPR (daughter pregnancy rate) bulls. No one likes hard-breeding cows. I’m also placing more focus on improving the feet and legs. I feel like they are starting to get a little too straight overall. I’m also really watching rump slope. I’m not a fan of heifers with high pins; I like to see some slope to the rump.” Jason continues to use information from aAa, a dairy cattle breeding guide and something he learned from his dad. Bulls that are nding use in the Tombeth breeding program include Morningview Radio, Milksource Cheers, Mr D Apple Diamondback, Avant-Garde Unix Select, Leaninghouse Helix, Croteau Lesperron Unix and Ms Atlees Sht Aftershock. “We really want to breed a bal-
anced cow,” Jason said. “We want cows that can become great brood cows and transmit from generation to generation.” They have been creating an in vitro fertilization program with ve cows: Tombeth Linjet Eloise EX-95, the 2019 Wisconsin Championship Show Grand Champion; her EX-94 sister Tombeth Shottle Enhance; Whitehead Doorman Liquor EX-93, the 2019 Wisconsin Championship Show Reserve Intermediate Champion; her EX-91 point grandmother Whitehead Superstud Lodi; and Jas-K Diamond-B TwinkleRed VG-88, a granddaughter of Jason’s Vande Shot Tiffany-Red VG-88, a rare red Shottle daughter who Jason named as his favorite animal on the farm 10 years ago. Jason said Eloise and Liquor have the top spot in his heart as his favorites, largely because of their showring successes last year and also because of the sentimental stories they represent. “They are both fun cows to work with,” Jason said. “Eloise is our rst homebred 95-point cow, our rst 95-point cow period; and Liquor was our wedding gift from Bailee’s dad.” The Kearnses do not have plans for herd expansion but do intend to build a new parlor. In the meantime, Jason is focused on improving other efciencies of the herd. “One of the things I really want to work on is improving our reproduction statistics,” Jason said, explaining that the majority of the herd is bred on a double ovsynch with a re-synch program after vet check. “I would like to be able to rely more on natural heats and less on an ovsynch program for breeding. Right now, we are at about a 25% (pregnancy) rate, and I would really like to get to the 35% to 40% range.” To aid in achieving that goal, the Kearnses purchased a Cow Scout collar system, which will give them information on rumination and activity as well as assisting with heat detection. “It’s really exciting to be seeing all this data,” Jason said. “We’ve only had it for about a month and are still learning and guring it all out, but I’m excited to see where it can take us.” Jason said he never truly has had any reservations about returning to the family’s farm to pursue a career in dairy farming, but he does have concerns about the milk price and markets. “We need to gure out how we can get people to like our product and realize how good it is for you again,” Jason said. “I do feel fortunate to live here in Wisconsin, where we have many different potential markets.”

National Jersey leadership named Ofcers and directors of the USJersey organizations were elected during the Annual Meetings of the American Jersey Cattle Association (AJCA) and National All-Jersey Inc. (NAJ) held virtually on June 26 and 27, 2020 in Columbus, Ohio. Jonathan Merriam, Hickman, California, was re-elected to a third one-year term as President of the American Jersey Cattle Association on June 27. The third generation of his family to breed and own Registered Jerseys, Merriam is the genetics specialist at Ahlem Farms Partnership, Hilmar, California, having previously worked in A.I. sire procurement, extension and education. He has served on the boards of the California Jersey Cattle Association and Jerseyland Sires and was co-chair of the 2016 National Heifer Sale. He was General Chair of The All American Jersey Shows & Sales in 2019, and served as chair of The All American Sale Committee in 2017. Rebecca Ferry, Johnstown, N.Y., was elected to her rst three-year term as AJCA Director from the Second District. She owns and operates Dreamroad Jerseys LLC, an 80-cow Registered Jersey herd, with her sister Sandra Scott. The herd is enrolled in AJCA’s REAP program. Becky was the 2002 National Jersey Youth Achievement winner and received the AJCA Young Jersey Breeder Award with Sandra in 2013. She was co-chair of the 2019 AJCA-NAJ Annual Meetings in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. In addition, she has served as co-secretary and vice president of the New York Jersey Cattle Club. Karen Bohnert, East Moline, Ill., was re-elected to a second term as Director from the Sixth District. Bohnert and her husband, Scott, and children, Tyler, Cassie and Jacob, own and operate Bohnerts Jerseys with her in-laws and brother-in-law. The 500-cow Registered Jersey herd is enrolled on REAP. Bohnert is currently a member of the Development and Finance Committees on the AJCA board. Bohnert works from home as a dairy freelance communication consultant, known for her monthly column in the Hoard’s Dairyman, “Around the Kitchen Table.” John Maxwell, Donahue, Iowa, was elected for his rst term as AJCA Director from the Eighth District. He and his family own and operate Cinnamon Ridge Dairy, a 185-cow Registered Jersey herd. The herd is enrolled on REAP. The farm has diversied through the years, adding a large agri-tourism business that hosts an average of 7,000 visitors a year. The tours aim to educate visitors on practices of a modern dairy and row crop operation. John received the AJCA Young Jersey

These farmers all have connec�ons to the college, through serving on advisory boards, working with interns, offering their �me on campus or in a variety of other ways. Each bucket contained items from the college, as well as from local business partners, including Rural Route 1 Popcorn, Community First Bank, Organic Valley, Blain’s Farm & Fleet, JC Acres Goats and Tractor Supply Co. Breeder Award in 1997. He is currently serving as dairy superintendent of the Mississippi Valley Fair, a supervisor for Scott County and re commissioner for the Donahue Volunteer Fire Department. He is a past president of DHIA and the Outstanding Young Farmers Organization. As well he sat on boards for Dairyland Jersey Sires Inc., Iowa State University Extension Council and River Valley Cooperative. Cornell Kasbergen, Tulare, Calif., was elected to AJCA Director from the Eleventh District. Kasbergen and his wife, Teri, and son and daughter-in-law, Case and Allison, own and operate Rancho Teresita Dairy. The dairy consists of 1,800 acres of farmland; 3,600 Registered Jerseys and 1,400 Holsteins. The herd is enrolled on REAP and has many animals that rank among the elite of the breed for Genomic Jersey Performance Index. Cornell chairs the Milk Producers Council and recently completed 22 years of service on the Land O’Lakes board of directors. He chaired the audit committee for Land O’Lakes and represented the organization on the National Milk Producers Federation board. Kasbergen is a member of the dairy committee for the Agriculture Council of California and the milk producer review board for the California Department of Food and Agriculture. As well he served on the California Dairy Environmental Justice Fund.
