Five generations, 160 years later
Turcks’ dairy recognized as sesquicentennial farm By Jennifer Coyne jenn@dairystar.com
LITCHFIELD, Minn. – When Jim Turck considers his career as a dairy farmer, he is reminded of the present and future with his wife and three daughters, but also the past and the many ancestors before him. This year, Jim and his family – wife, Lisa; and children, Jennifer and her husband, Alex Bipes; Amanda and her husband, Dave Barka; and Rachel – will celebrate their dairy farm’s sesquicentennial anniversary. “I used to ask my uncle, ‘What do you think Grandpa Turck would say today?’” Jim said. “Things have changed even more since I posed that question.” As a fourth-generation dairy farmer, Jim milks 50 cows alongside his youngest daughter, Rachel, 19, in Meeker County near Litcheld, Minn. While Rachel attends college in Willmar, Minn., she also tends to the youngstock and helps her father with milking the herd in their 46-stall tiestall barn. “I’ve been able to use my internships to be here with planting and harvest,” Rachel said. “It’s been nice to help.” Jim agreed. “I just try and make it look easy for Rachel,” he said. “I’m here to help her out and teach her how to do things by herself. In a way, Jim is following in his parents’ footsteps as they taught him about dairy farming. The Turcks established the farmstead in 1858, purchasing the original 160-acre property from the United States government only years before the 1860s Indian Uprising. “It was my grandma’s dad who purchased the farm,” Jim said. “At that point, they started milking cows to provide a food source for the family.”

Several decades passed before Jim’s parents, Lloyd and Phyllis, bought the farmstead in 1949. “My dad came home from World War II and purchased the farm from his mom and dad and siblings,” said Jim, who was a fth-grade student when his parents received recognition for the farm’s centennial anniversary. As the Turcks realized the potential their family could have in the dairy industry, Lloyd and Phyllis purchased a neighboring farm site, which has become
the main location for today’s dairy, and began expanding their 16-cow dairy herd. “In the original barn, I used a fork, shovel and wheelbarrow to clean the barn. This barn had a barn cleaner,” said Jim about the 1983 purchase of a building site and 23 acres. When Jim took over the family farm from his parents in the late 1980s, he continually looked for ways to improve the farm operation yet remain truthful to how his family created a lifestyle out of milking cows. “We put in one of the rst bulk tanks,” Jim said. Throughout the years, Jim and Lisa acquired more land and animals, bringing the farm to its present-day milking herd and 420 acres of cropland and pastures. The Turcks’ most recent purchase, in 2013, has allowed the opportunity for Rachel to become more involved in the family farm. “I want Rachel to experience dairying,” Jim said. “We can’t shy away from new ways of doing things, but we have to remember the basics. Our ancestors were smart. They knew it wasn’t all about producing, but the cost of production.” Rachel lives on a second farm site that houses the family’s heifers and steers. The location offers a tiestall barn where Rachel trains the heifers – from breeding age to freshening – to stand in a stall barn. “It’s easier to take care of the heifers when they’re

ConƟnued from TURCKS | Page 3 at my place,” Rachel said. “And, it’s easier to get them to come into the [milking] barn back here once they are familiar with the facilities.” Freshened heifers remain at Rachel’s farm site long enough to provide enough milk for the newborn calves, then they are relocated to the other farm. At the home site, the herd of Holstein-Normandes is housed in the barn during the winter months and for a short period following morning milking. Otherwise, the cattle are rotationally grazed on 50 acres. “We’ve always had some pasture, but then we put in a manure pit with the [Natural Resources Conservation Service’s Conservation Stewardship Program], and that has been a good opportunity to improve our pastures,” Jim said. Managing the milking herd on pasture has been one way the Turcks have used current-day programs and resources to improve their dairy, while keeping in mind the practices of their ancestors.

and then as a parent, himself, are ever present on the Turcks’ sesquicentennial farm – from running through the pastures and stream to watching his dad paint the milkhouse pink for the milk inspector to approve. As the Turcks continue farming with the promise of a fth generation not far away, there will always be a piece of the past that molds the future. “My [ancestors] put this farm together for me, and now I’m doing it for my daughters,” Jim said. “[Dairy farming] really comes down to working with your kids, because in the end, that’s your nal mark in this world.”

MAYNARD, Iowa – When Gary and Scott Wedemeier of Maynard, Iowa pulled their rotary hoe out of the machine shed, its wheels would not work. The tillage tool had not seen the light of day for more than two decades. The father-son farming partners had not needed the hoe for years. They’d relied on spraying for weed control on their Fayette County farm. But the move to organic dairying and organic crop production made the rotary hoe useful again. Scott and Gary trace their switch to organic farming to a few years ago. Their dairy was part of a study comparing the economics of conventional dairy farms to those of hybrid dairies. The Wedemeier farm is a hybrid because it uses a combination of traditional cow housing and feeding plus rotational grazing. “I could continue with what I was doing,” Scott said of the results of the study. “But I could never buy the farm. So, we decided to change to

It has been certied organic since October of 2017. Its rst load of organic milk was picked up one month later.
Theirs is a herd of 172 milking cows made up of Holsteins, Brown Swiss and crosses of the two. Gary and Scott said they do not push their cows for high production. Instead, they are satised with a per-cow average of 55-63 pounds of
milk per day, a 4.15 butterfat test and a 3.2 protein test, along with a somatic cell count at 145,000-200,000. Their move to organic dairying has generated more income, as intended. Scott estimated the base price they are being paid by their milk

The Wedemeiers’ organic milk price has dropped since they signed their contract last fall. “We’re still doing all right,” Scott said. A concern about the possible effects from applying products to their crops and land also entered into the decision to go organic. Gary underwent surgery for cancer in 2014. He said he cannot be sure of a connection between the cancer and the way he once farmed. “It made the decision easier for me when Scott approached me with the idea,” Gary said of the decision to farm organic following his cancer diagnosis. One thing Scott and Gary worried about and battled during the springs of 2016 and 2017 was armyworms. Scott said the destructive insects were not even noticed before the farm began its organic certication. But, armyworm problems began when the Wedemeiers

That type of corn has been genetically modied to kill the caterpillars of certain insect when they eat the corn. Since it’s genetically altered, it’s not allowed in organic farming. Two years ago, armyworms invaded and devoured some 50 acres of small corn plants. Last year, the worms hit the farm’s corn again. Where once rows of green spears were visible, the ground lay bare. “I could swear my corn was disappearing,” Scott said. Being organic, Scott and Gary could not launch a counteroffensive using a conventional insecticide. They found a product that was expensive,

but OK to use. As of late May this year, armyworms had not shown up on Grassway Dairy. Scott said the move to organic farming was also a bit challenging because the Wedemeiers had to nd people who could answer their new questions. “As a producer you create this group of people you know and trust,” he said. “Then you switch over to organic and it’s like you’re a kid in a whole different school and you don’t know anybody. There’s such a steep learning curve. … But I think we’ve overcome most of those issues.” Gary and Scott ceased their minimum tillage and no-till practices and went back to the way many farmers did things decades ago. “We had to relearn how to use tillage tools that we hadn’t used in 25 years or more,” Scott said. The rotary hoe now sees action three times each spring in the cornelds. The third pass might occur when the corn stands a mere three inches tall, so weeds are knocked back before they can gain much of a foothold. Along with the rotary hoe, the Wedemeiers rely on a heavy disk, rowcrop cultivator, harrow and soil nisher.
“We’re renewing a system of farming that we kind of had forgotten,” Gary said. “I’m amazed when I remember the things my dad would do and I relate them to what we’re doing today.” Managing the cows organically has not been as much of a challenge. Scott said they had already backed off on heat synchronization. “Our difcult breeders were already gone,” Scott said. “And our cows with higher energy needs were already gone.” One rough spot involved a disease during the rst year of dairying organically. “The calves brought something home from the fair, and it wasn’t a trophy,” Scott said. Rotational grazing became a mainstay on Grassway Dairy in 2005 when Scott graduated from college. The Wedemeiers wanted to expand the herd at little additional expense. In their part of northeastern Iowa, the grazing season starts in April or May and the cows continue to graze into early December. Scott said the cows come into the freestall barns for a couple of hours each day, but head out to the paddocks again for the night. Grazing ts well with organic production. According to the USDA’s National Organic Program Pasture Rule, cows must get 30 percent of their dry matter from pasture during the grazing months, Scott said. Along with pasture, the Wedemeiers’ cows eat a total mixed ration that includes haylage and baleage, corn silage, high-moisture corn, dry corn, eld peas, wheat and oats. Grassway Dairy milks in a swing-15 parlor that was retrotted into the two-story barn. The parlor replaced a double-4, step-up parlor that took the Wedemeiers out of the 36-stall stanchion barn. One person, said Scott, can milk 85 cows an hour in the swing-15 parlor. Two employees handle the milking. Gary and Scott do not foresee any changes coming to the farm in the near term. Gary said his role with the management and labor will likely shrink, while Scott’s will grow. Overall the Wedemeiers are happy with their combination of organic farming and grazing. “I wish I was his age and starting into this,” Gary said.

I live on my family’s registered Holstein farm Rock-N-Hill-II Holsteins in Juda, Wis. My mom also works at the Juda School where she teaches third grade. During the summer months, along with working on the farm, my family and I show our Holsteins across the state at a variety of shows, such as District 6 Holstein Show, Wisconsin Championship Show, World Dairy Expo and many more.

Business student of the year and high honors all quarters. Describe your class schedule this past year and other activities you were involved in. I took English, Spanish 4, social problems, ag classes, such as horticulture and ag marketing, personal nance, third grade classroom aide, and senior seminar. I am also involved with the Green County Junior Holsteins, Juda FFA and the Juda National Honors Society. What are your responsibilities on the farm you live on? Some of my responsibilities that I have on the farm are assisting with milking, managing the reproductive protocols, and I am also in charge of keeping all of the farm records up to date, such as registering and transferring calves, DHIA reports and show entries. How do you manage your time to complete your schoolwork and farm work? Describe a typical day during the school year. I try to get as much done as I can at school in my study halls so that when I get home from school I can go to work outside. A typical day for me would be going out to do chores at 6 and doing them until 7:20, then going to school, coming home to work around the farm and then do chores. After chores is when I would do any studying or homework that I need to get done. In what ways has farming helped you be successful in school? Working on a farm has helped me become more responsible, to have a good work ethic, to pay attention to detail, to be dedicated to my work, and to have good time management skills. What are your future plans? This fall I plan to attend UW-Madison Farm and Industry Short Course to study dairy farm management. I then plan to return to the home farm to continue to expand my knowledge in running and managing a dairy farm, while being able to continue to grow my own herd of registered Holsteins so that someday I am able to run

I received many honors ranging from scholarships to other awards presented at the senior awards night at my high school. I obtained a GPA of 4.27 and am ranked rst out of 151 students in my class. I also received my Eagle Scout last winter, and this spring my tennis team made it to the state tournament. Describe your class schedule this past year and other activities you were involved in. I took several AP classes and college level classes. I played soccer, alpine ski raced and tennis. I am involved in FFA, NHS, 4-H, Minnesota Junior Holstein Association, Boy Scouts, Badminton club and the Spanish club. What are your responsibilities on the farm you live on? I occasionally will help milk, but I help a lot more with the feeding. I am the groundskeeper on the farm and keep up with the yardwork. During planting and harvest, I help with whatever my dad needs me to do. In the summer, I help make hay and bale straw. How do you manage your time to complete your schoolwork and farmwork? Managing my time is the hardest part of my day. A typical day includes going to school and then coming home to do chores, or going to practice and then coming home to do chores.

It can be stressful, especially since I am taking AP and college level classes that assign multiple hours of homework each night. Some nights I don’t get enough sleep, but I can handle the load most days. In what ways has farming helped you be successful in school? Farming has shaped me in every aspect of my life. My dad expected my best work from me in whatever I was doing, and this is the same in school. I have a 4.27 GPA because I work hard and that is because of the farm. Farming has taught me not to quit, to have patience and to try my best with everything. What are your future plans? Attending the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities in the fall to pursue a major in animal science. Tell us about your farm and family. My family’s dairy farm has been around since 1895. I will be the fth generation. We milk 65 cows in a tiestall barn and have 135 head on the farm site. We also farm 620 acres of corn, soybeans, wheat, oats and alfalfa. I live on the farm with my mom and dad. I also have one brother who is attending college in South Dakota to become a civil engineer.

I also train new employees, deliver newborn calves and follow the fresh cow protocol. I mix the TMR when my dad is gone and milk as needed for my mom. I also help with eldwork. How do you manage your time to complete your schoolwork and farmwork? I wake up at 5 a.m. to help start chores until other employees take over, get ready for school and attend any pre-school practice for SPOTS or FFA. I attend school from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. During fall and spring sports, I have practice until 5:30 p.m. or meets until later in the afternoon. After the activities, I either help with chores until 8 p.m., or do homework and activities. Then, I head to bed at midnight. I am good at time management and try to keep to my schedule. In what ways has farming helped you be successful in school? The farm has showed me what hard work is and to get the most out of my time and be efcient. I’ve learned the value of a quality employee and the importance of paying attention to details. What are your future plans? I will be attending the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities for a double major in animal science, with an emphasis in dairy production, and computer science programming. I’d like a job with an ag company that works with dairy to create new software, or a tech company in general. When my parents want to retire, I plan to take over the family farm. Tell us about your farm and family. My parents, Brian and Jill Nelson, own Olmar Farms. I have a younger brother, Josh. I am the sixth generation to live on our farm and the fourth generation with registered Holsteins. We farm 650 acres.

When I get home from sports, I sometimes help for a while on the farm. When there are no sports going on, I help more often on the farm when I get home from school. After sports and working on our farm, I do my homework and work on fullling my responsibilities for my positions in 4-H, FFA and the Minnesota Junior Holstein Association. In what ways has farming helped you be successful in school? Farming has developed my personal character, which has helped me be successful in school. Farming has taught me to work hard no matter what. It’s also taught me how to deal with pressure. Sometimes it can be hard to get everything done on the farm that needs to be done. I was the secretary of student council class, am a county dairy princess attendant and am Miss Plainview 2017. What are your responsibilities on the farm you live on? I love to care for the calves. I enjoy taking care of them alongside my mom. I take care of my show cattle. I work with my cattle almost every day during the summer and am responsible for feeding them as they are in a different pasture than the rest of the calves and heifers. How do you manage your time to complete your schoolwork and farm work? I try to prioritize school over everything, but I keep organized with a planner. I am more motivated when I know I am busy and need to keep on top of things. I also set goals often and try to stick to them. The reward of completing a goal is something I ďƒžnd motivating. Describe a typical day during the school year. I get up and work at Cabin Coffee in the morning and then go to school. After school, I go to Cabin Coffee and close the store down. After work, I come home and eat dinner with my family and head out to do chores on the farm. After chores, I come in and do school work. During the winter sports season, I worked more in the morning and less after school as I had dance practice every day after school. In what ways has farming helped you be successful in school? Farming is difďƒžcult and takes hard work. I have been raised to know that nothing comes easy and you have to work for what you want. I use that mindset in school with my studies and extracurricular activities. Education is important to me, and I challenge myself with my school work just as farming can throw challenges at us every day. What are your future plans? Pursuing a post-secondary degree in elementary education at Iowa State University. I will be earning an endorsement in mathematics. I plan to use my degree to teach and inspire the youth within my community. Tell us about your farm and family. I live on my family’s sixth-generation dairy farm. I live with my step dad, Bruce, my mom, Natalie, my older sister, Kallie, and younger brother, Braiden. Our dairy herd consists of Holsteins with Brown Swiss, Ayrshires, Milking Shorthorn and crossbreds. We are milking 140 cows. We raise our heifer calves until 6 months of age and then they are raised by a custom heifer raiser until they are 16 months. From there, they come to our farm.

Study shows yogurt reduces inďƒ&#x;ammation in women A new study funded by National Dairy Council (NDC) shows that healthy, pre-menopausal women who consumed low-fat yogurt before meals reduced their risk for inďƒ&#x;ammation following the meal. Inďƒ&#x;ammation is the body’s natural response to injury or infection, but if the inďƒ&#x;ammatory response persists for too long, it can lead to chronic inďƒ&#x;ammation where the body essentially attacks itself and damages organs. Chronic inďƒ&#x;ammation is a factor in inďƒ&#x;ammatory bowel disease, arthritis and asthma. It also is associated with obesity, metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease and other chronic diseases. The research was conducted by the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The study explored the hypothesis that eating yogurt before a high-fat, high-calorie meal may help reduce inďƒ&#x;ammation by improving the integrity of the intestinal
lining, thus preventing endotoxins (proinďƒ&#x;ammatory molecules produced by gut microbes) from crossing into the bloodstream. These ďƒžndings on yogurt combined with a study published in November on yogurt’s role in reducing chronic inďƒ&#x;ammation add to the body of evidence of the important role of eating yogurt for health, said Dr. Chris Cifelli, Vice President of Nutrition Research for NDC. “Eating yogurt before meals is an easy – and tasty – way to help reduce inďƒ&#x;ammation, which is linked to several chronic diseases including heart disease,â€? Cifelli said. “The next time someone asks, ‘What anti-inďƒ&#x;ammatory foods should I eat?’ be sure to share the emerging research on low-fat yogurt!â€? Heavy hay bales pose safety hazard IOWA CITY, Iowa – Big bales of hay have become commonplace on dairy and other livestock farms, but there can be dangers associated with the large packages of forage. Stephanie Leonard, an industrial hygienist at the University of Iowa, said big bales are indispensable in the livestock industry. They are also a safety hazard because if their size. How massive are they? Large hay bales vary in weight, according to Keith Martin, Kansas State University. He said they can tip the scales at 450 to 1,700 pounds or more. Not only do wider and taller bales weigh more, but so do densely packed bales. For example, a 4- by 4-foot bale and a density of 9 pounds per cubic foot weighs roughly 450 pounds. But boost the same bale’s density to 12 pounds per cubic foot and it weighs in the range of 600 pounds. A 5- by 6-foot bale can weigh nearly 1,300 pounds when its density is 9 pounds per cubic foot, Martin said. The same size bale with a density of 12 pounds per cubic foot weighs approximately 1,700 pounds. Most mishaps take place when the hay is being loaded for hauling, during transport or when it is being unloaded. Leonard collected recent examples of large bale incidents. For instance, an Iowa farmer was killed when a bale he had stacked fell on him. In South Dakota, as a man unloaded large bales from his semitrailer, one fell and crushed him. And, a 10-year-old Iowa boy died after a round bale fell on him. The bale, Leonard said, was being moved with a skid loader, but it fell off and rolled over the boy. “In two different incidents in Iowa, truck drivers died when they were struck by large bales that fell off their trailers,” Leonard said. “Both victims were standing on the ground on the opposite side of the trailer from where bales were being unloaded. Unloading from one side caused bales to shift and topple off the other side, unknown to the unloading operators.” A truck driver in Illinois was hurt when another truck, also hauling large bales, rear-ended his. That, Leonard said, made a bale fall off one truck and hit the other one. Sometimes farm tractors are involved in incidents with large bales of hay. It can be a matter of a bale being
raised and rolling backward off the tractor’s loader and onto the operator. Do not try to stop a large round bale that is rolling down a hill. Leonard said an Iowa farmer’s tractor drove onto a rolling bale and overturned, pinning him, when he attempted to halt a rolling bale. The simple act of cutting a bale’s wrapping can be dangerous, Leonard said. She cites the case of an Iowa farmer being struck by a raised bale that fell apart as he cut its wrapper. Leonard advises being especially careful in situations when gravity or some unexpected action can make a bale move. These situations include when bales are raised at an elevation above you or others or when bales are stacked precariously. When trailers are loaded and unloaded and when any co-workers, bystanders or children are in a work area during bale handling are both dangerous situations. Be careful when you are moving bales with a tractor or equipment that is not equipped with FOPS (falling object protective structure) or full-cabin ROPS (rollover protective structures). Watch especially when the equipment you are using is balancing or cradling the bale, instead of securely grabbing and holding it and when bales are hauled unsecured on beds and trailers. Leonard recommends moving bales with equipment attachments designed to grab and securely hold them. These include bale spears, squeezers, grabbers, grapple hooks and bale hugger arms. When using such an attachment, follow this rule: Keep it low and keep it slow. In other words, carry the bale as low as possible and drive slowly. Remember to stand clear of any raised bale, Leonard said. And, do not try to stop a rolling bale. You will not be able to. Keep the area on both sides of a truck or trailer clear of people when it is being loaded and unloaded, Leonard said. Maintain a line of sight with truck drivers and other people who are helping. To people driving behind a load of large bales, Leonard said, “Maintain a generous following distance. You’ll have better visibility of the road, and the reaction time and distance needed to avoid a falling load.”

What dairy or ag-related extracurricular activities are you involved in? I am involved in FFA, 4H, dairy shows, dairy judging and horse shows. I am also a Goodhue County dairy princess. Why are you involved in these activities/organizations and what is your favorite? I grew up on my family’s dairy farm with cows and horses. One of my favorite activities to participate in is 4-H because it has lots of opportunities. Tell us your best experience during your time in these activities/organizations. My best experience through the 4-H program was going to dairy camp at the University of Minnesota and going to the National Dairy Conference in Wisconsin and meeting new people who have the same interests as me. What’s your favorite social media? Facebook, because it has many agriculture and dairy-related pages and posts. What are your career aspirations? I will be attending the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities to major in animal science and hope to participate in the prevet program to become a veterinarian. I would also like to work at our dairy farm. What is something you’ve learned from being involved in these activities/organizations? Learn, always have fun and meet new people.

Tell us something about yourself that many people don’t know. I enjoy cooking and singing. I love all things chocolate except if it is with fruit. My favorite dairy foods are milk and cheese. I have shown pigs through 4-H for about ve years.
Tell us some of your duties on the farm. I milk cows with my sister, give the calves milk, and feed the heifers and dry cows.
If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be and how would you change it? World hunger because 1/8 of the population doesn’t eat enough to be healthy. I would participate in Feed My Starving Children more often and work towards getting our dairy foods to those who are in need.

ConƟnued from CALENDAR | Page 18 The NMC Regional Meeting, hosted jointly with the Ontario Association of Bovine Practitioners and Dairy Farmers of Ontario, features “Solutions to Emerging Milk Quality Issues.” Presenters will address implementation of selective dry cow therapy programs, bedding options and their impact on udder health, and maintaining the highest milk quality when transitioning to robotic milking systems. The NMC Regional Meeting kicks off with nine short courses on June 20. These short courses provide a small group setting, which allows participants to interact directly with instructors and other short course participants. Two short courses feature the “teaching parlor,” a one-of-a-kind portable training device designed to simulate a real milking parlor. The teaching parlor was among the most popular teaching tools used at NMC’s annual meeting held in Arizona this past winter. During the evening of June 20, enjoy some camaraderie with milk quality enthusiasts during the evening banquet, which features Andrew Samis who will address “Saturated Fat: A New Perspective.” Samis, a human physician afliated with Queens University, developed a research interest in diet and cardiovascular disease after completing his doctorate in gastrointestinal physiology. He has published in this area and has served on several national expert panels associated with the development of guidelines related to diet and cardiovascular disease. He will review the history of saturated fat dietary guidelines and debunk the myth that saturated fats, including butter, impair human health. On June 21, the general session addresses several topics related to emerging milk quality challenges. Key topics include animal welfare, automatic milking systems, bedding management, free fatty acids and product quality, antibiotic use and selective dry cow therapy. The NMC Regional Meeting concludes with dairy farm tours on June 22. Tour stops include Dual Lane, Kelderview and Larenwood dairies. Owners of these dairies will show visitors how they achieve outstanding quantity and quality milk production, along with sharing insights on providing cow comfort, building collaborative relationships and adhering to standard operating procedures. The early registration deadline is May 31. However, short courses have limited enrollment and are lled on a rst-come-rst-served basis. Junior owned cow honored as 2017 Star of the Breed The esteemed Star of the Breed award was introduced in 2007 to acknowledge an elite Registered HolsteinÂŽ cow that embodies outstanding production combined with exceptional type. This year, Holstein Association USA presents the Star of the Breed distinction to Smith-Crest-TW SH Virgie-ET. At the time of recognition, Virgie was owned by 21-year-old Paul Grulke of Mayville, Wis. Her balance, depth of body and front-end strength are attributes Paul says he admires about Virgie. He began working with her as a Junior Holstein project alongside Matt and Travis Smith of Smith-Crest Holsteins. During her last lactation, calving in at six years and four months of age, on two-time a day milking, Virgie produced 44,710 pounds of milk, with 1,784 pounds of fat and 1,296 pounds of protein. Classiďƒžed Excellent-95 2E, Virgie is a cow to be admired by any Registered Holstein breeder. Currently a junior at University of WisconsinPlatteville, Paul is majoring in dairy science with a minor in agriculture business. He enjoys ďƒžnding the best mating for each cow, while learning how genetics evolve over time. After graduation, he plans to pursue a career in genetics. His aspirations include being a herdsman or owning his own dairy farm where he could focus on breeding high-type animals. Year two of Undeniably Dairy kicks off with celebration of those devoted to dairy This June, in honor of National Dairy Month, the Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy is partnering with nearly 40,000 family farms, processors and dairy brands to spotlight the many people who are devoted to dairy. The month-long celebration will kick off year two of the Undeniably Dairy campaign and will rally communities from coast to coast to salute people’s passion for dairy. Since launching one year ago, the multi-year Undeniably Dairy campaign has sought to reignite consumers’ love for dairy while helping to bring them closer to the farm and to the people behind their favorite dairy foods. This year’s National Dairy Month celebration will be unprecedented in scope and scale. The effort will leverage large-format murals, podcasts, events and special activations to spotlight dairy devotees from every part of the farm-to-community chain. The simple message – the dairy community loves making dairy just as much as people love to enjoy it. “We know that people are disconnected from our farms and that they have questions about how their food is produced,” said Beth Engelmann, chief marketing communications ofcer at Dairy Management Inc., which supports the Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy. “Year two of Undeniably Dairy will serve as a kickoff to celebrate the devotion of farmers, chefs and everyone in-between who bring the nutrient-rich and responsibly produced dairy foods that people know and love, to their table.” The celebration begins on June 1 in honor of World Milk Day. This annual event acknowledges the worldwide contributions of the dairy community to sustainability, economic development and nutrition. Wisconsin FFA Foundation awards 2018 chapter grants The Wisconsin FFA Foundation has announced the winners of the 2018 chapter grants, which encourage Wisconsin FFA chapters to develop individual and cooperative activities that will enhance their communities. Two new grants were awarded this year. A $4,000 grant from the Burton H. Morris
estate was bestowed upon the Adams-Friendship FFA Chapter. Morris, a longtime FFA and agricultural education supporter in Adams County, passed in 2016 and has left funds in his will for chapters who have students within the county limits. Another new chapter grant was awarded to three chapters, each receiving $266.67: Prairie du Chien, Kiel and River Valley. The Wisconsin FFA Convention Chapter Grant was established by the WAXX/Wisconsin Farm Report Network with Pam Jahnke to help members attend the upcoming Wisconsin FFA Convention in Madison. “We’re so grateful for our sponsors who support FFA through the chapter grants program,” says John Hromyak, Wisconsin FFA Foundation executive director. “Their support in key areas of need goes right to the local level, beneting individual members and the communities they serve.” The Wisconsin FFA Foundation also awarded chapter grants to several FFA chapters throughout the state, due to continuing program support from longtime benefactors. Granton FFA is the recipient of the $500 Community Service grant, available because of generous donations to the Bethany L. Rieth Memorial Fund. This fund was established in the Past State FFA Ofcer’s honor after her sudden passing in February 2016. Two chapters, Brodhead and Sparta FFA, are this year’s recipients of $400 Food for America grants, once again funded by the Wisconsin FFA Foundation’s long-time Two-Star Mission Partner, Organic Valley/CROPP Cooperative, Inc. The Wisconsin FFA Foundation and Syngenta also have partnered to provide resources for produce gardens to eight Wisconsin FFA Chapters through the Grow More Communities program. This is two additional chapters than in 2017, due to Syngenta’s commitment to grow the garden grants awarded in Wisconsin. The Columbus, Ellsworth, Holmen and Oshkosh North FFA Chapters each were awarded $500 to begin a chapter garden and will receive another $500 at the end of the season. Antigo, Randolph Cambria-Friesland, Shullsburg and Waupun FFA chapters are the recipients of the $500 grants for existing Grow More Communities garden projects. FarmFirst Dairy Cooperative helps farmers during April snowstorm Upper Midwest dairy farmers expect lots of snow in January and February. But, April? That’s what happened, on April 14 and 15, when dairy farmers from South Dakota to Wisconsin got dumped on with double-digit inches of the heavy wet snow making the roads impassable for some dairy farmers to get their milk to their processing plant. Nineteen FarmFirst Dairy Cooperative members, ve in South Dakota and 14 in Wisconsin were affected by impassable roads during the snowstorm, however, because of their membership with FarmFirst Dairy Cooperative they received a disaster payment for their lost milk. A total of $29,381 was paid to farmers. Specically, the Disaster Benet Program available through FarmFirst pays farmers for the loss of milk income caused by the death of a cow by either lightning or electrocution, the loss of electric power or due to impassable roads due to snow or ooding. The Disaster Benet Program is a unique benet for FarmFirst Dairy Cooperative members. “As most are aware our dairy farmers are having a difcult time with prolonged low prices,” said Jeff Lyon, General Manager for FarmFirst Dairy Cooperative, “Then, when the farmers are getting ready to hit the elds, we get a big snowstorm. We’re grateful for our disaster benet program in times like these so we can help and support our dairy farmers in their time of need.” “The benets are many when you belong to FarmFirst Dairy Cooperative,” Lyon continued. “We have been a strong advocate for market-based dairy policies that give all our members an opportunity to be successful. We believe that dairy farmers need a variety of risk management tools through the public and private sector at their disposal. Our members understand the importance of trade and the need to enhance current trade agreements and expanded export opportunities to grow the U.S. dairy industry.”
