Pioneers in robotic milking

Knigges celebrate 20 years with automated system By Stacey Smart

OMRO, Wis. – Pete Knigge was fascinated with robotic milking long before the technology appeared in the United States. His rst encounter with robots occurred during a trip to Europe with the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection for manure regulations. On a stop at a university farm, Pete was able to see robots in action, and his plans for a 500cow dairy soon took a detour. He and his son, Charlie, met with Lely representatives from the Netherlands in Madison during the 1999 World Dairy Expo. The company had yet to introduce its robotic technology to Expo goers. “Robots were not on anyone’s radar at the time,” Charlie said. “People in the U.S. had not even heard of them.” About nine months later, Knigge Farms, located near Omro, would become the rst farm in the United States to install robots. The rst milking took place July 14, 2000, beginning a long adventure of training cows how to use a system that nobody else in the country was using.

“We were very nervous about dealing with a foreign company that had no presence in the U.S.,” Charlie said. “But we soon realized (it) is a great company to work with.” When Charlie nished the University of Wisconsin-Madison Farm and Industry Short Course, he and his parents were planning to expand the herd from 50 cows to 500 and put in a parlor. “We wanted more cows, but we weren’t crazy about adding more people,” Charlie said. “We were nervous about the expansion and having hired help.” So, the family decided to tackle a new way of milking cows – an option that would lead to increasing herd size to 120 and require no additional labor. “It was a nightmare to get started,” Charlie said. “I don’t wish that on anyone. Getting cows attracted to the robots in those days was a challenge.” In the beginning, robotic milking was anything but handsoff for the Knigges. “We spent all day in the barn and half the night fetching cows,” Charlie said. “Sometimes we thought, ‘Why did we do this?’” The ordeal lasted several years as the Knigges struggled to

Perfecting the energy equation between bunk and robot was a dilemma. “Shortening the energy on bunk feed and then trying to make up for that loss in the robot was a trick,” Charlie said. “Energy pellets are the gold standard now. But when we rst started,

they were a treat, and that didn’t work. It was a sweet feed, and even different avors did not help. We pulled salt out of the TMR, but that didn’t solve the problem either. We worked with UW-Madison to gure out energy requirements and tried lots of things with our nutritionist. In the end, it took three years to get

robot trafc owing. It was painful.” Being on the front end of robotic technology meant the Knigges would face all kinds of challenges, including approval to ship milk from a robot. “Our local inspector was not

From valves to sensors, he wanted to see every part that was in contact with the milk.” Stainless steel parts were not polished to U.S. standards – an issue that had to be addressed before shipping milk. The inspector also did not trust the sensors responsible for dumping treated milk and cleaning the system afterwards. As a result, every load of milk coming from Knigge Farms was tested for nearly four years. Another challenge is barn design. The four-row barn was set up for forced trafc conditions and is split in two with a robot on each side – a design Charlie does not recommend. “The facility should be one entity so that cows have access to more than one robot,” he said. The Knigges milk 120 cows with two robots and farm 600 acres. Pete, and his wife, Theo, bought the farm in 1974 after moving to the Omro area from Kenosha and are still involved in the operation. Charlie’s son, Jacob, 17, also works on the farm. Cow numbers at the dairy have remained unchanged for 20 years. “We can stay small,” Charlie said. “That’s the beauty of robots. They allow us to milk less cows more efciently. We went to 120 cows for less money than we would’ve spent going to 500. With robots, a farm is prepaying for labor, and someday, the robots will be paid for. Hired help always has to be paid and that amount keeps increasing. You never catch up.” The Knigges began with the company’s A-2 robots which they used for 10 years before switching to the A-3 model in June 2010 – a model they use today. “We’re thinking about upgrading to the A-5 robot this summer,” Knigge said. “They won’t t in the same space so we’re working on the logistics. We’ll have to add a 13-foot wide addition for the new robots, and we’ll need to make the entrance area bigger too.”

The Knigges ship their milk to Agropur, and cows average 80-85 pounds of milk per cow per day. “We know we have room to improve, but we’re comfortable where we’re at,” Charlie said. Charlie sometimes helps Central Ag Supply, a dealership in Juneau, with installing robotic milking units to help train farmers and get them up to speed on the technology. The Knigges have also helped their farm’s robotic milking company with startups. “It’s really fun to see the setups and get farmers going,” Charlie said. “What took us years to gure out takes them months. It’s dramatic how fast farms get up and running now.” In 20 years’ time, the Knigges have seen a night-and-day transformation of robots. “It’s like going from a land line to a smart phone,” Charlie said. “That’s how much the technology has changed from then to now. The old software was not very user friendly, but the new software is.” Charlie enjoys the freedom robots provide and loves the fact chores can be done at any time. “The downside to robots is that you’re not touching the cows two or three times a day, so we spend quite a bit of time walking cows,” he said. “This is not a ip the switch and walk away type of system. You still have to manage your herd.” The individual monitoring of cows is a feature Charlie loves. “It’s a very useful tool,” he said. “The collars monitor cows better than we do and are great for agging sick animals. The info the robot spits out on each cow is amazing. There are upwards of 150 points of data.” The farm’s slogan is, “Knigge Farms: Where the cows milk themselves.” As the country’s rst adopter of robotic milking technology, the Knigges are thankful they chose robots and stuck with them through the trying years. “We wouldn’t milk our cows any other way,” Charlie said.

HARTINGTON, Neb. â€“ Over the last 10 years, on-farm milk bottling has made it possible for Dean and Lisa Burbach to sustain and expand their dairy operation. The Dairy Star ďƒžrst visited Burbach Countryside Dairy in January 2009. At that time, the Burbach family had been doing on-farm milk bottling for two years. â€œWe decided to start bottling our own milk after the cheese plant in Hartington closed,â€? Dean said. There have been numerous changes at the Burbachsâ€™ farm during the past decade. â€œAll of our kids are now out of the nest except for Sara who will be a senior in high school next year,â€? Dean said. â€œIt will be different for Lisa and I when Sara leaves for college.â€? Dean and Lisa have seven children: Felicia, Jeffery, Nick, Deacon, Luke, Anna and Sara. Deacon, 24, is working on the farm. He handles a variety of responsibilities that range from driving milk delivery trucks to helping with the milk bottling to doing ďƒželdwork.

â€œWe purchased our 70-acre farm in 1994, the year that Lisa and I got married,â€? said Dean, who grew up on a nearby dairy farm. â€œWe raised hogs for the ďƒžrst six months. One day, I asked the banker if I could build a dairy, and he said it was ďƒžne with him as long as I could make the payments. I began to buy dairy equipment, and we were able to build a dairy barn in 1999.â€? A decade ago, the Burbachs were milking 130 head and purchasing virtually all of their feed inputs. They are now milking 180 head and have acquired enough land to raise about half of their corn silage. Another big change took place two years ago when the Burbachs began to make and package yogurt on their farm. They produce raspberry, blueberry, strawberry and vanilla yogurt. â€œEvery two weeks, we turn 250 gallons of milk into yogurt,â€? Dean said. â€œThat translates into about 6,400 individual cups. Our yogurt is full fat, which we think is what makes it so popular. We donâ€™t use artiďƒžcial thickeners. We add a little nonfat dry milk to the vat and let the yogurt ferment longer than usual. ConƟnued from BURBACHS | Page 5 say that it’s the best they’ve ever had.” Several years ago, the Burbachs began to crossbreed some of their cattle. About 60% of their cows are Holsteins, while the remainder are either Jersey or Montbéliarde hybrids. This has helped keep the herd’s average butterfat content at 4% or better. The Burbach family has worked to expand the number of retail outlets and coffee shops that feature their milk. Burbach Countryside Dairy’s products are available at 84 retail outlets across the region. “Our milk has even reached the Black Hills (of South Dakota),” Dean said. “A store called The Bee’s Knees Natural Foods sells our milk. They are the only customer who requests that our milk not be homogenized. Their customers want to be able to see the cream line.” The Burbachs have always used glass bottles for their milk. “We feel that our milk tastes better because it’s in glass bottles,” Dean said. “Glass bottles are more expensive than plastic jugs, but our bottles don’t go to the landll. They are returned to us and reused.” Burbach Countryside Dairy continues to bottle milk in avors that include banana, blue raspberry, caramel latte, orange cream, cotton candy, chocolate, root beer and strawberry. They bottle eggnog a-

vored milk on a seasonal basis. Consumer preferences have shifted dramatically over the past decade. “When we started bottling milk, skim milk was by far our biggest seller,” Dean said. “We sold twice as much skim milk as we did whole milk, and we didn’t know what to do with the extra cream. That has changed completely. Today, we sell ve times more whole milk than we do skim milk, and we always sell all of our cream. People are starting to see the benets of full-fat dairy products.” A decade ago, the Burbachs were bottling about 2,200 gallons of milk each week. They are currently bottling 3,700 gallons per week, which represents about two-thirds of their herd’s production. The balance of their milk is sold to Associated Milk Producers Inc. The Burbachs have grown their workforce to nine fulltime employees, including family members. They continue to bottle their milk with a bottler that was made in 1949 and homogenize their milk with a machine that was manufactured in 1947. “We now own four milk delivery trucks,” Dean said. “It’s nice to have our own trucks, but they add another layer of headaches and expenses.” The COVID-19 pandemic has affected everyone. Burbach Countryside Dairy is no exception.

The Burbach family installed the automated yogurt machine two years ago. “When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, we saw a big drop in sales of whole milk and cream to our coffee shop and bakery customers,” Dean said. “Some of them are now starting to come back, but I’m afraid that a few may not survive. Throughout it all, our bottled milk sales have remained fairly strong. During times such as these, people want something that’s familiar and reliable. I think our glass bottles of milk give folks a sense of comfort.” Another effect of the pandemic has been an increase in

orders for yogurt from food banks. “We are glad to do our part to help provide food for those in need,” Dean said. Lisa is thankful to have been able to work alongside family members. “It’s been quite an experience,” she said as she looked back on the past 10 years. Looking ahead, Dean hopes to expand yogurt sales in addition to other avenues. “We have noticed the increasing demand for farmfresh meat, so we’re thinking

about adding a plant where we can process some of our animals,” he said. “That way, we can help ll the demand for meat and add value to our cattle.” The Burbachs have worked hard to grow their business but know that none of their success would be possible without their customers. “We have built up a very loyal customer base,” Dean said. “Knowing that people are choosing to buy our products is the best feeling in the world.”

She thought the pond was iced over, so she stepped on a bucket that was on the pond. We told her to come back, and then all of a sudden she was swimming in the pond. I was laughing so hard I could barely help Zale pull Mandy up. I laughed so hard I fell backwards into the pond.

Wisconsin cow named 2019 Star of the Breed Ocean-View Sterling Silver, bred and owned by Ocean View Genetics, Daryl and Pam Nunes in Deereld, Wis., has earned the honor of being named Holstein Association USA’s 2019 Star of the Breed. The Star of the Breed recognition is given annually to one Registered Holstein® cow that exemplies outstanding milk production combined with exceptional conformation. To be eligible for the Star of the Breed award, a cow must place in the top ve in her class at a National Show, be in a herd enrolled in the TriStarSM program and have an ofcial classication score. Once eligible cows are determined, a calculation is done using the cows’ combined mature equivalent fat and protein and age adjusted classication score to determine the top cow. Silver is classied Excellent-94 2E, and completed her most recent 365-day lactation, calving in at ve years and seven months of age with 58,330 pounds of milk, 2,419 pounds of fat and 1,640 pounds of protein. She was the fourth place 150,000 Pound Lifetime Production Cow at the 2019 Midwest Spring National Holstein Show. Sired by Regancrest S Braxton-ET, Silver traces back to one of the foundation cows of Ocean View, Ideograph Burkgov Steps. She completes 13 generations of Excellent and Very Good dams, with her nearest three dams being Ocean-View Zenith Sassy EX-90, Ocean-View Starlet Sassy EX-93 3E and Ocean-View Benet Sassy EX-91 2E. According to Daryl and Pam Nunes, Silver represents and pays tribute to the breeding philosophy that Daryl’s father, Marvin, started at Ocean View. Namely, silky, dairy cows that work hard and possess outstanding individuality with depth of pedigree. “We feel that today the art of breeding is getting lost in our industry and it’s easy to forget about the balanced cow,” they said. “We don’t look at proof numbers, we look at what a bull is making for daughters, what his cow family did and what a cow is doing in our herd. When you have worked with cow families over the generations, this one for over 50 years, you gain an insight as to how they breed. Their research includes testing for soil health and the impact of crop rotations on soil,” said Nacos-Burds. Nacos-Burds noted that the students’ environmental science work will include a eld day, site visit for C2A3 partners, students, College staff and faculty, and the community. A primary goal of the grant-funded research is to evaluate land and conservation practices for sustainability. The goal is not only to accelerate the adoption of conservation practices through the education of current, two-year agriculture students, but to also disseminate information to the broader community through eld days and other college events and partnerships. The C2A3 collaboration was born out of a mutual desire to provide more ongoing education, training and demonstration to future farm producers and agricultural service providers with the goal of improving the health, and therefore the long-term productivity, resilience and sustainability of the soil. “Iowa NRCS is proud and looking forward to working with Northeast Iowa Community College and its students to promote conservation and utilize the principles of soil health,” said Kurt Simon, state conservationist for USDA-NRCS in Iowa. “Much has changed over the past decade about the way soil science experts and agricultural producers value the soil. Our partnership with NICC will help advance the soil health movement.” Show children safe on farms in social media photos, videos Sharing on social media has increased during the coronavirus pandemic as we try to stay connected while spending more time at home. For farm families, photos and videos of children in the home environment can include hazardous work and play situations. “The images we share can, unintentionally, perpetuate unsafe farm practices,” said Scott Heiberger, communications manager with the National Children’s Center for Rural and Agricultural Health and Safety, Marsheld Clinic Research Institute. “Photos and videos are often used as attention-getters, but sometimes ‘cute’ is unsafe.” About every three days, a child dies in an agriculture-related incident, and each day, at least 33 children are injured. Images of children performing work that is unsafe for their age and ability level, often involving machinery and large animals, have been common this spring on social media. And it’s not just working children who are exposed to hazards. Of all children injured on farms, more than half are not engaged in work at the time of the injury; they are merely in the worksite. And of those non-working youth, most are younger than 10. “It’s probably no surprise, then, that many of the unsafe situations we’re seeing on social media involve very young children,” Heiberger said. “One photo showed two little boys climbing on the lift arm of a skid-steer. Another photo showed ve small children and the caption, ‘How many kids can you t on a combine tire? LOL.’ “If we show the agricultural worksite as a playground, we’re asking for trouble.” Following the old adage that “a picture is worth 1,000 words,” the Childhood Agricultural Safety Network (CASN) created Media Guidelines for Agricultural Safety, a list of do’s and don’ts aimed at keeping children safe and not perpetuating dangerous farm practices. The guidelines, also available in Spanish and French, were updated recently to include social media. Examples include: – Don’t show individuals riding on wagons, in the back of pickup trucks or as extra riders on tractors or ATVs. – Don’t show children riding on adults’ laps on ATVs, or lawn tractors/riding mowers. – Don’t show children in proximity to large animals unless appropriate barriers are evident. – Do show children doing age-appropriate chores under adult supervision and wearing protective equipment. – The guidelines were originally introduced in 2010 with feedback from media professionals as well as communicators from CASN member organizations. “Following these guidelines can help each of us be condent that we are doing our part for farm safety,” Heiberger said.
