MORRIS, Minn. – Could algae be the next ingredient used in dairy rations alongside corn and soybeans? Robert Gardner and his research team think so. As a room ďƒžlled with listening ears, Gardner presented his preliminary research ďƒžndings during the Midwest Farm Energy Conference at the University of Minnesota’s West Central Research and Outreach Center (WCROC) June 13 in Morris, Minn. “There are a lot of different options of products that algae can make – cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, bioplastics, biodiesels, and protein and carbohydrates for animal feed,â€? said Gardner, assistant professor of renewable energy. Although there are many different strains of the photosynthetic organism – microalgae, macroalgae, cyanobacteria and diatoms, among others – they all work similarly, capturing light and carbon dioxide to produce oxygen. “Algae is surrounded by a great big world with photosynthesis happening all around it,â€? Gardner said. “Nearly 50
percent of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is ďƒžxed by algae.â€? Knowing the strain of algae present in an environment and what they are capable of producing based on their structural characteristics allows scientists to use algae in place of synthetic materials, said Gardner who travels across the United States observing algae environments such as springs in Yellowstone National Park. In agriculture, algae blooms have been known to form from nutrient runoff in water reservoirs. This can result in excessive oxygen concentrates and the death of aquatic life. “Intensive farming also puts more carbon in the air, and if you don’t do a sustainable crop rotation, you can really wreak havoc on the soil,â€? Gardner said. At WCROC, Gardner’s work begins at the dairy lagoon, where wastewater is stored and laden with ample nitrogen and phosphorus.

Producers using alternative crops throughout year By Krista Kuzma

EYOTA, Minn. – A drive past Ron Pagel’s farm this spring would have resulted in being able to check out the crops. “We had something green growing on every acre on our home farm – alfalfa or winter rye,” said Pagel, who milks 75 cows with his family near Eyota, Minn. Those same elds would have looked a lot different just a few years ago; however, the Pagels have started using cover crops on the 450 acres of owned and rented land they run. Pagel said they started dabbling in the practice about four years ago when a cold, wet spring resulted in acres in southeast Minnesota needing to be in a prevent plant program. “There was a lot of bare ground and a lot of ground that never got planted so guys were putting cover crops on them,” Pagel said. are starting to use cover crops in their normal rotation. “There’s a soil health initiative going on right now in the entire U.S., and cover crops is a part of that,” White said. “It’s not just an organic technique any more. A lot of just straight corn and soybean producers are using cover crops as well.” This year, the Pagels cover crop ground will start with canning peas, which are harvested towards the end of July. Then it will be seeded to either alfalfa or a mixture of regular oats and winter rye, which will be planted Aug. 1. The oats will be harvested this fall for forage and the rye will be harvested next spring. That ground will then be planted with corn. “By the time we get it harvested in the spring, it will be a little later so that will be corn we use for silage. If we didn’t put corn on there, it would be perfect timing for a crop of soybeans,” Pagel said. For dairy farmers, having a cover crop to provide extra feed is benecial. “We don’t have any more land that’s coming into production so you have to utilize the land you have in additional ways. Cover crops can add additional forage on the same acres for those producers,” White said. “It can really add high quality forage on a system that would normally be left bare in the winter months.” Aside from producing additional feed, cover crops have other benets. The rst is erosion control. “Seeding a cover crop [canning crops, corn or something similar] helps keep the soil covered or armored, which is one of the key principles of soil health to help prevent erosion. Those roots are there in the ground to help keep the soil in place and also the biomass on top of the ground is there to help cover it as well,” White said. Pagel agreed. “It gives you something growing out there to keep [the soil] in place,” he said. “Our ground isn’t real rolling like a lot of farms in southeast Minnesota, but it’s not at by any means either.” Cover crops also help build more organic matter and a better growing environment. A normal cropping rotation consists of about three types – alfalfa, corn and soybeans, White said. “Our soil is a living organism. There’s lots of different bacteria, fungi, anthropods, worms, other things that live in the soil – they all work together to make nutrients more available to the crop and help create macropores so inltration is increased. With
our limited species we plant, it limits how many types of bacteria and fungi can live in the soil,” White said. “Adding cover crops to the system helps increase the diversity in our cropping system, which then increases the number of soil biota living in there and makes that soil function more efciently, which can translate into better transport of nutrients or availability of nutrients to our regular cropping systems.” However, there are also challenges to having cover crops. Pagel experienced one of the biggest ones – planting or harvesting in a timely manner. This spring, around the time they should have been harvesting it was wet in the elds and then there was a hustle to get corn planted. “It went from a high quality milk cow feed to a youngstock, dry cow and heifer feed before we got it harvested simply because that’s how fast the maturity can come on that stuff,” Pagel said. “If we would have left it another two weeks, it would have been gloried straw.”
But Pagel said it depends on a farmer’s needs. In their case, they wanted to try to get high quality feed for the milking cows instead of forage for nonlactating animals. “Looking back, we probably should have left the planter sitting before harvesting winter rye, but we’ll know better for next year,” Pagel said. Seeding can also be a challenge. “The later you get into fall, the shorter window of germination you have. If you’re going to take the cover as a forage in the spring it’s nice to at least get a couple inches up before we get frost or snow cover,” White said. Wanting to try to plant earlier, some farmers have started trying to interseed early in the corn stage or later with a helicopter. Pagel advised farmers to ease into the process, adding a little bit of cover crops at a time. White said winter rye is a good place for dairy farmers to start. “It’s a no brainer. It establishes easily, it’s winter hardy and it’s a good forage in the spring,” White said. White said she would not be sur-

Cody, Gerdts, Konichek named valedictorians By Krista Kuzma

Cody valedictorian at North Crawford High School Mary Jo Cody stood at the top of her class at North Crawford High School. She is the 18-year-old daughter of Bryan and Martha Cody, who milk 35 cows near Seneca, Wis. On the farm, Cody does chores in the morning and evening, milking cows, taking care of calves, working on vaccinations and keeping records. She was also crowned the 2015 Crawford County Dairy Princess. “I really enjoyed that role and valued it greatly,” Cody said. In school, she was involved in student government as the vice president of her class; National Honor Society; PALS, an organization where an older student mentors a younger student; forensics, in which she has advanced to state the last four years; and solo ensemble. She is also involved in her local church. This fall, Cody will be attending the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, majoring in dairy science with the goal of becoming a veterinarian. “I love working in agriculture, not just with the animals, but the people, too,” she said. Gerdts top of his St. Ansgar High School class Aaron Gerdts was named the valedictorian of his class at St. Ansgar High School this year. He is the 18-year-old son of Mike Gerdts and Denise Gerdts of St. Ansgar, Iowa. Although his dad sold his herd when Gerdts was 2 years old, they kept raising a few heifers to show at fairs. Growing up, Gerdts has shown those heifers at the Mitchell County Fair and has participated in 4-H. In high school, he started working for a neighboring dairy farmer and became involved in FFA, serving as president his senior year. Although Gerdts was involved in sports early in his high school career, he decided to focus on the farm and FFA. His favorite class was agriculture. This fall, Gerdts will attend Iowa State University and major in dairy science. After college, he would like to get a job in the dairy industry to gain experience and build equity before building his own dairy farm. Gerdts attributes his success in the classroom and working his job at the same time to working hard all the time. Konichek named valedictorian at Seneca High School Jena Konichek earned the title of valedictorian of the graduating class at Seneca High School. She is the 18-year-old daughter of Doug and Susie Konichek, who milk 38 cows near Steuben, Wis. Konichek works with her family to do chores on the dairy, feeding calves and milking cows. In school, she was involved in FFA, along with softball, basketball and volleyball. Konichek’s favorite subjects included anatomy and physiology Jena Konichek and other science classes, along with math; however, her favorite ones were her agricultural classes. “It was a busy four years,” Konichek said about her high school career. This fall, Konichek will attend Southwest Wisconsin Technical College where she will major in ag business. After two years she would like to transfer to the University of Wisconsin-Platteville to nish her degree. Although she doesn’t know what she wants to do after college, she knows it will include agriculture, with the possibility of taking over her parents’ dairy farm. “I really love the farm,” she said.

Hands, heart full of Jerseys Harth represents Minnesota as breed’s state queen By Jennifer Coyne jenn@dairystar.com
HINCKLEY, Minn. – Since the Minnesota All-Breeds Convention March 4, Ellen Harth has had her hands and heart full of Jerseys as she serves as the 2017 Minnesota Jersey Queen. Harth’s passion for the colored breed began many years ago when her grandfather, the late Gerald Harth, gifted her a heifer calf. “Both of my grandfathers encouraged me to keep with the Jersey breed. They came to all of my shows and supported me in any way they could,” Harth said. “A week after Grandpa [Petersen] passed away, I was crowned the Jersey Queen. Everything I do, I do for them.” Harth owns 36 registered Jerseys and 1 registered Holstein on her family’s 110-cow dairy near Hinckley, Minn. She is also employed at a neighboring farm, where they milk 42 registered Holsteins. Throughout Harth’s reign, the 18-year-old has spoken with consumers during classroom visits and grocery store appearances about the added benets of Jersey milk, including
Academy in Columbus, Ohio. During the ve-day trip, Harth will tour Jersey farms and dairy businesses, as well as attend educational sessions with 30 students from across the nation. “I want to go to school to be a dairy nutritionist, to learn about the different ration options to help calves grow,” Harth said, who will be a senior this fall at Hinckley Finlayson High School. Through the academy, Harth hopes she will gain greater knowledge about the Jersey breed. Additionally, this youth gathering will expand Harth’s relationships in the industry as she prepares for the national Jersey queen competition, which is held in conjunction with the All-American Jersey show this coming fall in Louisville, Ky. Brancel asks state’s farmers to help North Dakota neighbors Secretary Ben Brancel is asking Wisconsin farmers to help out North Dakota ranchers suffering under drought conditions, answering a call for assistance from his counterpart there. “Wisconsin farmers have always had big hearts, and this is one more way they can help out their neighbors, even neighbors who are two states away,” Brancel said. He heads the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection. Brancel noted that some Wisconsin farmers experienced heavy alfalfa losses to winterkill this year. “You might even nd someone right here who needs help,” he said. The University of Wisconsin-Extension operates a farmer-to-farmer website at http://farmertofarmer.uwex. edu to connect farmers with hay to buy or sell. North Dakota Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring reached out to Brancel Thursday, asking for help to spread the word about his state’s need. A hotline is available for callers to report what they are able to provide: 701-425-8454. Anyone with hay to sell, hay land to rent, or time and equipment to move hay is asked to call and leave their name, contact information and what they can provide. Goehring said many producers are also looking for farmers out of state who can dry lot or pasture their cattle. Low precipitation combined with high winds and temperatures have created drought conditions across North Dakota in varying degrees. As of early June, the USDA was reporting that topsoil moisture was short to very short in more than half the state, and pasture and range conditions were rated 70 percent fair to very poor. Even if rains were to come by late June, Goehring said, forage production could be dramatically reduced. He has asked the USDA Farm Service Agency to allow emergency haying and grazing on Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) lands. Dairy farmers discuss policy priorities during Capitol Hill visits Dairy farmers from across the country visited Capitol Hill today as part of the National Milk Producers Federation’s annual young farmer y-in to Washington, where in more than 200 meetings they asked lawmakers for action on a handful of issues important to the dairy sector. More than 70 farmers from 21 states visited their House and Senate members Tuesday as part of their role as national leaders in the 2017 NMPF Young Cooperator (YC) program. The dairy producers discussed the challenges they currently face, and highlighted four priority policy issues that need Congress’ attention: The need to make signicant improvements to the structure of USDA’s dairy Margin Protection Program, which currently is not providing an adequate economic safety net for farmers; The DAIRY PRIDE Act, which would require the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to enforce existing food standards specifying that dairy terms such as “milk,” “cheese,” “yogurt” and “ice cream” should only be used by foods made from real milk; The importance of a balanced approach to trade policy, especially as the 24-year-old NAFTA agreement is renegotiated by the United States, Canada and Mexico; The need to reform immigration laws in a manner that helps preserve the existing agricultural workforce and allows for the future ow of dairy farm workers. “We are excited to share the rst-person perspective of America’s dairy sector at a time when elected ofcials in Washington really need to hear our voice about the topics that matter most to farmers,” said Melissa Grifn, a dairy farmer from Buckland, Mass., and chairwoman of the 2017 YC Advisory Council. Grifn’s husband Adam, who co-chairs the council, added that “we were able to make our points about issues specic to dairy, such as the need for a viable farm safety net and the importance of integrity in federal food labeling laws. We also showed how high-prole national issues such as trade and immigration affect our family farm in New England.” Randy Mooney, chairman of NMPF and a dairy farmer from Rogersville, Mo., said that the YC Program “provides our community with a powerful grassroots presence. We need their engagement in Washington because there are so many issues competing for the attention of Congress. Thanks to our younger leaders stepping forward, we have a much better opportunity to reach our legislative goals.”

University of Minnesota Small Grain Plot Tour will be held in southern Minnesota during the last week of June. Locally, the eld day will be hosted at the U of M Extension Research Plot on the Dave Lochen farm north of Kimball on Tuesday, June 27, beginning at 1 p.m. The eld day event is located at 9625 Co Rd 8, Marty Minn. A lunch will be served at the Pearl Lake Lodge prior to the plot tour. Jochum Wiersma, U of MN Extension Small Grains specialist; and Jared Goplen, Regional Extension Educator for Crop Production, based at Morris. The program agenda for the day will include small grain production on the growth stage, agronomic practices, and pest identication and management. There will also be a review of the variety trials of spring and winter wheat, winter rye, barley, and/or oats. Growers are asked to bring “show-and-tell” samples from their own elds for analysis, diagnosis, and/or identication. There will be discussion of current growing season conditions and issues; and providing insight crop inputs and management strategies. The local research plots are funded through a grant from the Minnesota Association of Wheat Growers cooperating with University of Minnesota Extension. Other Southern MN Tour sites will be held at the Hoefs/Pomiji farm near LeCenter on Monday June 26 at 1 p.m.; and the Gieseke farm near New Ulm at 5 p.m. The fourth southern site will be Tuesday June 27 at the John Gorres Farm near DeGraff at 7 p.m. Northern eld days will be held later in July. To celebrate June Dairy Month, dairy farmers across western Iowa are inviting the public to a family-friendly event at Summit Dairy near Primghar, Iowa. The 10th annual event will include a dairy farm tour, free food and kids’ activities from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 28. Parking is available at the farm, located at 5564 390th St., Primghar (12 miles east of Hwy 60 on 390th St./B-40, or 3 miles west of Primghar on 390th St./B-40). The June Dairy Month Celebration is sponsored by Western Iowa Dairy Alliance and Midwest Dairy Association. Visitors will tour Summit Dairy, including opportunities to see where cows are milked, where they are housed and fed, and learn about the role of milk and dairy products in a healthy diet. Recent changes in the cost to dispose livestock mortalities has led to an increased interest in composting of mortalities as a management strategy. The Composting Livestock Mortalities program will provide information for best practices for successful composting of animal mortalities (cattle and swine), economic and legal considerations for mortality composting on-farm in Wisconsin. Area livestock farmers and ag professionals are welcome to attend Wednesday, June 28 from 1-3 p.m. at the farm site N9235 North Branch Road, Hixton, WI. The program location includes on-site composting facility and demonstration. Successful livestock mortality composting can save farmers money in rendering fees if done correctly. Steve Okonek, Trempealeau County UW-Extension agent will discuss best practices, including the composting process, materials and methods, common problems and solutions. In addition to basic legal considerations for CAFO and non-CAFO sized farms interested in composting mortalities, Gretchen Wheat of the Wisconsin DNR will discuss recommended options for composting facilities, the advantages of a hard work surface, push walls & roof, versus composting on bare ground with something such as hay bales stacked around the perimeter. There is a vent/peep hole on one end for proper ventilation so you can look in on the calf without opening the unit.
