Taking Holstein genetics to next level
Danhof recieves distinguished breeder honor By Sherry Newell Contributing Writer
WAUKON, Iowa – Sheri Danhof, of Waukon, Iowa, is receiving the Holstein Association USA Inc. Distinguished Young Holstein Breeder Award at the 2019 National Holstein Convention June 2328 in Appleton, Wis. The award will be presented during the evening banquet June 27. Sheri will serve as a delegate representing Iowa Holstein Association during the National Holstein Convention. She serves on the Holstein Association international marketing and type committees. Sheri is quick to say she did not earn the distinction on her own. “There are many young Holstein breeders that are very deserving of this award and I feel very honored and fortunate to have been this year’s recipient. I got lucky,” Sheri said.

Sheri returned to the family farm – a 1,000cow dairy named Regancrest Holsteins LLC – in 1998. She and her husband, Jason, have also built a genetics business, Danhof Holsteins. Regancrest Holsteins was started by Sheri’s grandfather and passed on to four brothers: her father, Frank Regan, along with Bill, Charles and Ron Regan. In 2012, Sheri and her relatives – Brian, Sean and Mitch – became the third generation a part of the business. The dairy has 17 full-time employees. The crop operation is a separate family-owned entity which sells feedstuffs to the dairy. Sheri was invited back to the business by Frank to manage the business ofce after she completed business courses following high school. Her interest in genetics ourished from there. “I made myself Dad’s protégé,” Sheri said. “I

She registered calves and prepared merchandising materials for Frank’s travels selling genetics. Along the way, she became focused on further development of the Regancrest genetics that produced bulls like Regancrest Elton Durham, who has sired the most Excellent cows in the United States according to the United States Department of Agriculture. “I used to read and study pedigrees, see where the faults were, decide what sires to use,” Sheri said. Her work was both with live cows and on

But, Sheri also observed how the genetics business was changing. “As it changed, I was young enough and ambitious enough to know that if we were to continue our legacy, we had to adapt,” Sheri said. “We used to select a few young bulls to progeny test and cold call breeders to use semen. We did more ads and promotion and used our reputation to sell cattle.” Sheri said it is highly unusual to sell a cow from the herd these days. Instead, her work is focused

on genomics that lead to bull and embryo merchandising. “The registered Holstein business has changed quite a bit since genomic data became available,” Jason said. “As we progress, the landscape continues to change from daughter-proven bulls to those that meet a certain parameter, and that’s where Sheri got more involved.” The Danhofs are proud of having
co-bred the highest genomic total performance index bull in the world: 3049 at the time of evaluation. Regan-Danhof Gamechanger semen was released in April. “If we just bred cows, that gets kind of mundane,” Sheri said. “Our niche is genetics, and it’s made us substantial money over the years.” The individual roles each of the Danhofs play include duties less glamorous, too. Sheri runs payroll, works with the herdsman, enters computer data on fresh cows, and takes part in the herd checks, while Jason does reproduction tasks for 500 heifers and manages ushing work. And, the couple still has tremendous respect for Frank’s knack for picking out cows. After all, it is the Regancrest legacy that has given Sheri a chance to accomplish what has led to the Holstein award. “Some people work a lifetime and don’t have this opportunity,” she said. Steve Berland, of GenElite LLC and one of those who wrote a nomination for Sheri, said he has watched her make the most of that opportunity. “Sheri is committed to excellence in everything that she does,” Berland said. “She is in tune with the latest trends in breeding; she utilizes all of the tools and technology available to breed and merchandise breeding stock of the highest quality.”

ARLINGTON, Minn. – When Scott Krueger realized Sunshine Dairy’s cow Ginger was calving, he expected to greet twins in the calving pen. Instead, Scott received a surprise, nding not two but three calves waiting for him. The triplets, all heifers born from sexed semen, were born June 11. Scott and his wife, Stephanie, milk Holsteins on their dairy farm near Arlington, Minn. Ginger belongs to the Krueger’s daughter, Montana, 15. She named

the calves Snap, Crackle and Pop. Tanya Olson, veterinarian of the Lester Prairie Veterinary Clinic, had conrmed twins due to Ginger via ultrasound. When Olson visited the Krueger farm the day after the birth, she told Scott she usually does not look further after she sees twins.
“She might now,” Scott said. Olson checked the calves and found them all doing well. One is larger and the other two are smaller and look similar. The larger calf, Snap, proved to be a calf pen escape artist by the second day. Scott estimates Snap weighed about 65 pounds with the other two weighing about 50 pounds each. Although the calves were born nine days early, Ginger had plenty of milk for the three which was fed to the calves over several days. Scott said Ginger produced about 32,000 pounds of milk in her last lactation. Scott said Ginger was bred on a natural heat with no shots and settled on the rst service to View-Home Monterey-ET. This was the fourth calving for 6-year-old Ginger, a daughter of Emmark Mammoth. It is not the rst time Ginger has been in the spotlight. She was born during Breakfast on the Farm at Sunshine Dairy June 14, 2013. Ginger, however, is not the most cooperative cow. “One of our girls tried taking her to the fair as a heifer, and she dug her feet in the dirt and refused to move,” Stephanie said. “They worked tirelessly with her for a couple of weeks and never did get her to move. … When she was almost 2, she had her rst calf and has been a rockstar milker ever since.”

Sharing their love of the land
Gilles family welcomes campers, hikers to wooded acres By Krista Kuzma

RIDGEWAY, Minn. – The Gilles family has such a love for the land that they could not keep their 230 acres to themselves. “We have the most beautiful woods, and I love to share it,” Mike Gilles said. Mike and Joan Gilles have two campsites for rent and over 7 miles of hiking trails on the wooded acres of their 110-cow dairy in Winona County near Ridgeway, Minn. The couple listed their rst campsite two years ago and added a second site last fall. “We have a deep valley here,” Mike said. “We own land on both sides so it’s secluded.” With no electricity and no running
water, the Gilles family’s campsites are listed under the primitive category. “It’s nothing fancy,” Mike said. The sites each have a structure for sleeping with plenty of space for extra tents. There are also large picnic tables, outdoor replaces, outhouses, rewood and barrels of water the Gilleses provide for their guests. They are in the process of making one of the campsites ADA accessible. The rst site, which they call The Wooden Tent, is a small A-frame structure that is large enough for a mattress. “We built it because we camp down there,” Mike said about the wooden tent they built 10 years ago. “As we got older, we thought a mattress would be nice along with not having to set up a tent. So we built a small wooden tent.” This site is the most popular and includes a natural jungle gym the Gilleses created out of fallen trees. Since the wooden tent is not insulated, the Gilles family does not offer it for camping during the winter; however, many people inquired about cold season camping on the dairy. Mike and Joan Gilles stand in front of The Wooden Tent, one of two campsites they rent on their 110-cow dairy near Ridgeway, Minn. ed with two sleeping areas and a stove. “The snowshoeing was great this year,” Mike said. “We had lots of snow.” No matter the season, the main reason people book their camping trip at the Gilles family’s dairy is to use the trails, Mike said. Over half of the farm’s 230 acres is wooded. Within those woods, the Gilles family has created and maintained over 7 miles of trails, complete with trail names and signs to mark the way. Campers are not the only ones allowed to enjoy the hiking on the Gilles property. The trails are open to the public, and the family hosts a hiking club in September and October for elementary students from the nearby charter school. “Kids don’t get out in the woods much now,” Mike said. “That’s what I want. I want them to get out and enjoy the woods. If they do it when they’re kids, they’ll go out as adults, too.” They also have a cross-country ski
club that uses the trails in the winter. The rst generation farmers bought their farm in 1996 after working for or renting dairy farms for 15 years prior. With Mike’s previous work as a forester, it was important to the couple to have wooded acres. The trails were rst created out of necessity. “I do salvage logging,” Mike said. “I wanted to be able to reach all my trees. It goes back to me wanting to manage my woods.” But, it soon turned into a way for the whole family to enjoy the land. Campers since their childhoods, Mike and Joan shared their love for the outdoors with their 10 children. “It doesn’t take much effort to get me to drop what I’m doing if I can go to the woods,” Mike said. The campsite was rst created as a place for their family to enjoy during the summers.

A sign welcomes the public to the Gilles family’s trails. “It was a way to get away from the farm because most dairy farmers don’t get to take a vacation,” Joan said. “It was a vacation at home – a staycation.” Now, their children are adults and have moved off the farm, although their daughter, Nancy, still works as an employee on the dairy. “We haven’t been down there as much anymore,” Mike said. “We thought we should share it because it’s sitting there.” The campsites are listed on hipcamp.com, a website similar to airbnb.com that promotes camping areas. Hip Camp charges a commission, but takes care of all booking details and provides insurance for the guests along with protection against damage; however, Mike and Joan said all their guests have been respectful. While the venture started out as donation-only, the Gilleses now charge as a way to try to bring in extra income on their farm. “We thought we would just see what happens and put in a rate,” Mike said. “There is denite investment and maintenance cost. We have not made any money yet, but feel we can as it grows.” This year, they hope to double their income from the sites. Since the Gilleses do not plan to expand their dairy, they needed other ways to add value to their farm. “We’re most efcient at a certain number of cows,” Mike said. “To get bigger would make us less efcient and take away what I call our edge – the grazing. It’s the only way we can compete with 500cow dairies – to keep our cost low with grazing.” All non-wooded land on the dairy is used to rotationally graze their herd of cows. “It’s ideal grazing country,” Mike said. “It’s the best use and where we want our cows to be.” Before other farmers offer campsites on their dairies, Mike and Joan offer advice. “You have to have the same passion for people and woods or land as you do for milking cows,” Mike said. “Passion is more important than making money. That has to come rst because we aren’t making money yet.” While the Gilleses admit having the campsites and maintaining the wooded acres on their farm takes extra work, they like that other people can see the natural beauty of southeast Minnesota. “We want to share it,” Mike said. “We encourage as much use as we can get.”
