Strawberry Hill Farm focuses on dairy goats, tours By Sherry Newell Contributing Writer

STRAWBERRY POINT, Iowa – It was nine years ago when Dairy Star rst visited the Kauffmans at their goat dairy near Strawberry Point, Iowa. They were milking 220 and planning to be at 300 by the end of the year, the result of 18-year-old Alan Kauffman’s realization of his dream to farm. A lot has happened since then. Now married to his wife, Marie, and a father of two, Kauffman increased the herd to 450 milking, then suffered a big setback, recovered, and with his mother, Christine, expects to be back to milking 400 by the end of this month. They’ve added two hoop barns to address expanded numbers. Plus, the farm has new purpose – providing tours to supplement income while helping people learn about farming. Christine along with Alan’s father, Gene Kauffman, bought a small portion of the farm where Gene was raised and allowed Alan to manage 75 goats there when Alan was 15. Gene works off the farm as a crane operator. The 11-acre

property had a small grove they cleaned up in 2011 and then realized it made a great park-like area for Alan’s children, Ivan and Karly. “By that September we decided to invite kids out and call the farm Strawberry Hill,” Christine said. Christine has connected with Iowa’s Silos and Smokestacks, a federal heritage area afliated with the National Park Service. It has sites, programs and events to help interpret farm life, rural communities and agribusiness. “They really showed me how to engage with people who visit,” Christine said. And engage they did. When they began giving tours, they simply let people wander around the farm. Later, they set up two kinds of tours by appointment. A quadruple surprise Cow at Beltz family’s dairy gives birth to four calves By Krista Kuzma

LAKE CITY, Minn. – Four calves in one day for Mike Beltz’s 80-cow herd is a rare occurrence. But, four calves in one day all from the same cow is an event Beltz never thought would happen. “I don’t get twins that much, and I’ve never had triplets,” Beltz said. “I didn’t even think about quadruplets.” On May 8, a second-lactation Holstein gave birth to quadruplets on Beltz’s dairy near Lake City, Minn. The three bulls and a heifer were welcomed by his family – wife, Cassandra, and their children, Scarlett, 5, Mitchell, 3, and Esmée, 3 months. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime thing,” Beltz said. “It’s a little bit of good news we need right now.” The morning of May 8, Beltz’s employee mentioned cow 1289 had calved. After nishing calf chores, Beltz went to check on the cow and take a look at the newborn. By the time he arrived, another calf had arrived. To Beltz, it appeared to be twin bulls, each weighing about 70 pounds. “I never thought to sleeve her,” Beltz said, referencing checking her for more calves. The dairyman brought the cow in to milk her and get colostrum for

the calves; however, the cow did not let down much of her milk. Although Beltz took notice, he was not alarmed and continued with his chores by letting the fresh mother back outside. Nearly ve hours later during evening chores, Beltz saw the cow lying in the bedded pack straining. When he approached her, Beltz realized the cow was still in labor. A foot was presenting. “I thought I was going to have a dead calf because it had been so long,” he said.

Beltz brought the cow into the barn to check her and assist with the birth. “I stuck my hand in, and I felt three feet. They pulled back so I knew they were alive,” Beltz said. But, then Beltz realized all three were back feet. “I said, ‘This can’t be happening,’” Beltz said about his realization that the cow was giving birth to quadruplets. With Beltz’s assistance, the cow gave birth to two more calves – a bull followed by a heifer. “I got them out, and they were breathing,” he said. “I thought it would be hard to get them going, but they haven’t had too much trouble.” The heifer took awhile longer to stand than the others. Her hooves buckled at rst. Beltz thinks it is because there was not much room to move in the womb. “They’re big and long, but not very big boned,” Beltz said about the calves. As for the cow, Beltz thought she was a little bigger than the others, but never suspected she was pregnant with four calves. “She’s a big long-bodied cow,” he said. Beltz does not ultrasound pregnant cows so he never knows before hand if one will give birth to multiples; however, the cow gave him a few clues. She dried off when she was six months pregnant. “She just turned it off like a switch,” he said. “I thought she was sick or had hardware, but she ate and acted like nothing was wrong.” After calving, the cow showed no signs of distress. Beltz only needed to give her calcium pills outside of his normal fresh cow routine. Beltz bought the cow last June at William Smith’s herd dispersal in Wisconsin. “She was open when I got her. She needed to get pregnant since she was already 100 days [in milk],” Beltz said. When the rst breeding to a Holstein failed, Beltz decided to try a different route. He bred her with a straw of Normande – the rst time Beltz had ever incorporated the breed into his herd. But now he has four HolsteinNormande crossbred calves. Although Beltz plans to raise them like normal, he is not putting high hopes on the heifer to be reproductively sound. “We’ll see what happens,” he said.

Alan Kauﬀman takes pride in a clean, dry nursery at his family’s goat dairy near Strawberry Point, Iowa. $8 and lasts twice as long. They bring in chickens, ducks, geese and rabbits during the summer as an additional attraction. There are also special rates for classes and larger groups. People learn about the tours on the farm’s Facebook page, Strawberry Hill Farm and Garden, or by word of mouth. Unfortunately, Christine’s two knee replacements in the past year have sidelined this spring’s tour offerings. Past tours have left her with warm feelings. “On one tour with mentally challenged kids, a person gathered the courage to touch a goat. It was a life event for him,” Christine said. “It was a big moment. It fullled my purpose.” Another time, a father brought his

children, including a 5-year-old who started the tour as a stubborn child. “Pretty soon, she never left my side,” Christine said. “She even put milkers on. At the end, the father got the kids in the car and said, ‘I brought her here as a princess, but I’m taking her home as a farmer.’” Alan and Marie’s children are becoming farmers, too. Seven-year-old

Ivan has the job of sweeping up, a responsibility made easier because the two Kauffman families share the farm home. When Alan and Marie married, they converted the home to a duplex that connects through a door inside but allows each family their own space. That also makes it easier for Alan and Christine to work together managing the mixed herd of goats, which produce an average of 8 pounds of milk each day. The farm’s parlor is equipped with 14 stations on one side and 12 on the other. It takes about an hour to milk 100 goats, which is done twice daily. Like many dairy farmers, Alan said nding good hay is one of his current challenges. “I like a consistent RFV of 210,” he said. “And because I want big squares, it has to come from out West. There’s just not that kind of hay available in Iowa.” A bigger challenge was overcoming the loss of half their herd from mastitis caused by stray voltage. It happened after installing a new milking system after their rst herd expansion. They nearly hung it all up. But according to Christine, Alan’s rst words after talking through the options was, “I’m not giving up.” He still hasn’t. He envisions a day when he can milk 600 goats in a rotary pit parlor. As for his mother, she never realized she missed the farm life of her childhood while she ran a shop in town. “But now that I’m back on the farm, I’m not leaving,” she said.

What dairy or ag-related extracurricular activities are you involved in? I am president of the Holdingford FFA Chapter, and I am a Stearns County Dairy Ambassador.

What is something you have learned from being involved in these activities/ organizations? If you work hard, you will get to where you want to be. Hard work can be rewarding.

Why are you involved in these activities/organizations and what is your favorite? My favorite activity is FFA. I am involved in FFA because it has helped me develop my leadership skills and has helped me get over my fear of public speaking. I have become more condent when speaking to others. I have competed with the small animal team and have enjoyed it. This helped me decide what my future plans will be. I am a Stearns County Dairy Ambassador. I am looking forward to promoting the dairy industry because dairy is important to my family.

Who do you look up to? I look up to my parents. They have taught me skills that will be important in life. They also push me to do better, so I can become a better person. My dad has shown me what hard work is and that when times get tough, you need to keep pushing through. My mom has taught me how important time management is and to stay organized so you do not lose important papers.

Tell us your best experience during your time in these activities/organizations. This year, our small animal team placed rst at regions. I became a region star nalist in production placement. Going to state convention to be recognized on stage for this award was one of my best experiences during FFA. As a dairy ambassador, I am looking forward to the activities and experiences that have yet to come. What is your favorite social media? My favorite social media is Snapchat. It is a good way to stay in touch with friends. What are your career aspirations? I plan on attending Ridgewater College in Willmar, Minn., for veterinary technology.

Tell us something about yourself that many people do not know. I help coach the Albany Special Olympics bowling team. I got involved in it so I could help coach my little sister. I enjoy working with all the kids and being involved in it overall. Tell us some of your duties on the farm. After school, I feed the cows, scrape the alley, help milk and give hay to the cows. On the weekends, I get up at 4 a.m. and help feed the cows, calves and help milk. I also help clean out the pens. If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be and how would you change it? I would like to educate the people that live in the cities and are unfamiliar with what farm families do to supply America with food. Many do not realize what it takes or how much work farm families do. Since I am a dairy ambassador, I will be given the chance to go to events to educate people. This will be a small step, but hopefully I can make a difference to someone.
